"'I'd prefer you didn't go to the park today, Judith rang and she said the man's down there." Hahaha!
If Catweazle had been booked by Dusty Rhodes then he'd be best remembered for his short and uninspiring feud against Dogferret who was actually Brad Armstrong in a mask.
Dusty would of made him an actual wizard and put him in a year long feud with Hulk Hogan culminating in a ferret down the trousers match
@@pmc8451That sounds like a feud I’d like to see where instead of ending their feud in a steel cage or Heel In A Cell match you’d get a ferret down the trousers match (can tell your English as you didn’t call them pants). Catweezle would win as Hulk Hogan has a 10 inch penis which is more likely to get bitten and scratched, though if it was Terry Bollea instead of Hulk Hogan it would be more of a closer match as Terry Bollea doesn’t have a 10 inch penis as he explained in court that time
The Catweazle/Dogferret feud culminated in a spectacular abortion in the Sportatorium on a New Year's Eve event, in which Dogferret was supposed to rescue Jimmy Cornette from a steel box. Dogferret's mask prevented him from finding the hidden key taped to the side of the steel box, which caused Catweazle to have to visibly assist his archnemesis in locating the key. The referee, who was supposed to count out Dogferret, had no choice but to count both men out; a decision that was later reversed by the commissioner in a classic Dusty Finish. This event is often held up as the ultimate example of Dusty Rhode's ineptitude as a booker.
"The cat Weasle men of Britain have died out" just brilliant
If only we could have had Catweazle & The British Bulldog as a tag team.
I would have named their team Pedigree Chums.
I love how Catweazle is having a drink out an old school plastic pop bottle. I remember those bottles with the black bases on them from my childhood
Everyone drank their water between rounds from those bottles in the UK
Kendo would hold his up ceremoniously like he was a Viking warrior drinking mead from a horn.
Been 53 so so I.
Could I just say I find the both of your commentary on this channel to be genuinely quality and would go out on a limb to say you're easily the most underrated channel I've came across this year. Keep it up
Hard agree
Likewise - honestly between this and Jim Cornette is have no need or any other wrestling podcasts.
Don't you mean annoying?
Been waiting so long for a wrestling channel to acknowledge Gary Cooper (CatWeazle) Loved him when i was a kid and got to meet him twice. Even have the same signed photo. Needs more credit.
That tickle escape from the full nelson was superb.
I'm so happy I found this channel, it has been so entertaining! I found this video quite endearing and I'm glad you guys picked Catweazle as otherwise I would never have known about him! Great job!
While I could never definitively know, unless he grew out his hair and beard, I think Catweazle bears a passing resemblance to one of my favorite UK talents, Mark Gatiss. Plus, the Mick McManus pipe organ still gets me.
A late friend of mine, who had the ring moniker of 'Dave Shade' had a on and off ring feud with catweazle.
Love the show!
The 70s and 80s were wild. You could follow a strange old man into a cave and become either Captain Marvel (Shazam!) or a stew.
The Triple H gag... Always stay till the end. Thank you guys. You do a service the the British government should pay you for 🙌🏼🙌🏼
That ending almost made me do a Triple H impression myself xD
It made me miss Lemmy. 😂
Finally! We get a Catweazel video! Thanks very much!
Edit: Love the ending! And if I remember from Simon Garfield's book " The Wrestling", that when Catweazle was cremated, he had "Fire" from the Crazy World of Arthur Brown play while he went behind the curtain!
Ahh, the vid I never knew I needed haha
I heard Alex Shane, on the old talk wrestling show on talk sport, say it was "great balls of fire"
Simon quotes Pat Roach recalling Catweazle's funeral during a roll call of the departed at a wrestling reunion but says nothing about what got played.
100 lines, Dentention and an Essay about Lord Alfred Hayes for me then...
@@chairmanofthebored7391 I would say Garfield is the more reliable source.
Very proud to say that I am the recipient of a British Wrestlers Reunion award for furthering British Wrestling through my play, Living with Luke, which was solely based in a wrestling ring and featured first Paul Tyrell in one of the roles and then Phil Powers.
"When like Fleetwood Mac were, like, a folk band and they were terrible and everyone hated them"🤔Nope, they were never a folk band! They were an amazing blues band and extremely popular. In 1968-69 they had a number 1 single and two reaching number 2, outselling The Beatles and The rolling Stones combined!😜
"The Green Manalishi" is one of the best rock songs ever.
Great stuff guys. Really enjoying learning about British Wrestling and your gags are hilarious. Keep it up!
I can see where Triple H got his look from at times in his career.
Genuinely didn’t see the Triple H reference coming 😂
Paddy Pimblett is bringing back the Cat Weazle gimmick.
The Catweazle look was a popular look back in the 70s - eg Nik Turner of Hawkwind.
old hippies basically
He does have a hawkwind look about him 😆
Edgar Winter for sure, but many, many others. Hawkwind had an undertone of fantasy themes, but that's true for a lot of the music, movies etc produced in the 70's.
Catweazle should have feuded with Shaun "Rasputin" Doyle. Good hippy versus bad hippy. Both the same look.
The slander for the good version of Fleetwood Mac was a disgrace, a real disgrace. Pete should be ashamed! :(
Yep that lyndsey Buckingham stuff was feckin shite …best thing about that was stevie nicks, she was a looker ,music was dire pop music ..
Catweazle was a wrestler?🤯The way I know the name is via the telly show that until recently I was convinced I'd made up in my head
You have gained a new subscriber. Love the channel!! Keep up the great work!
I get the sense that Catweazel (1969) was structurally quite close to Stig of the Dump (from the early '80s kids TV - My generation)
- I DO have some early memories of Wurzel Gummidge, I remember at the time being a bit creeped out by him
(the fact he was a scarecrow that would remove his head sometimes DEFINITELY did not help, when you're 5!)
Did a likkle dicky bird tell you that ??
Geoffrey Bayldon, who played Catweazle, also played The Crowman in Worzle Gummidge!😎
I thoroughly enjoyed both Catweazels as a kid.
I'm enjoying the insight on this channel particularly on the old scholl UK wrestling scene. Being a yank and having not grown up with WOS or Reslo
This is great…I met Catweazle when I was a kid..really enjoying ur work, it brings back some good memories…would you consider covering Alan Dennison? He appeared on telly every year from 1960-1984, and died following a bout at Floral Hall…if you do, thas kewl, but I’m sure whatever you’ve got lined up it’ll be worth a view or two. Tks.
Catweazle looks like he rides around town on his bike selling stickers.
Hm…The very idea of the Catweazle TV show would make a very amusing point-and-click adventure game. Reminds me a lot of Simon the Sorcerer.
STS was a fucking delight. To this day I'll still walk past piles of logs in the forest where I walk my dog and mutter "balsa...teak...mahogany" under my breath.
I'm from Armthorpe and its not a little village is massive in size and population nearly fifteen thousand people
Yes I'm from Doncaster too armo is huge definitely not a lil village
Catweazle is my Auntie's dad (She married my mum's little brother) and he was nothing like you made him out to be early in the video. He sadly died in 1993 from cancer.
Bollocks.
@@iconiclustWhy?
Obviously, theyre joking based on his look/mannerisms on camera, it has nothing to do with the man himself.
Did he do anything else besides wrestling?
RIP Catweazle he was so much fun but tbh agood wrestler too
This may be the greatest thing I've ever seen, and I think that Catweazle story(the tv show, not the wrestling) was ripped off by Rowling and turned into the Harry Potter series😂
Another great upload thanks brings back many great memories from when I was kid currently 53.
Catweazle looks like Edgar Winter, if Edgar wasn't an albino.
I have to assume I would have loved that Catweazle show as a kid.
Yeah, I get the sense it was quite close to Stig of the Dump (from the early '80s kids TV)
I used to watch wrestling live at the Cliffs Pavilion (Southend) with my dad in the 80's, used to see Big daddy, Giant Haystacks, Syd Cooper, Tom thumb and all the greats, as a kid I loved Catweazle and always assumed it was the same guy as the TV show (which I also loved) looking back it's pretty creepy 😜
One of us now lives in Southend - I'm yet to see the Big Daddy statue frankly! hehe
@@WrestleMe It gets my vote :)
Triple H got his water spray from catweazle
Catweazel and Mr Trebus never seen in the same room together
That ending was fantastic.
I'm glad I didn't drink every time they said Catweazle
I didn’t realise that Geoffrey Bayldon was the voice of Zippy!!,😮
BTW, I remembered the TV series when I first saw Catweazle wrestle.
He didnt..it was roy skelton who did zippy and george for over 25years👍
3:35 CATWEAZLE RULES...ok!
He's like a skid row Mick Fleetwood.
These strange old men characters of the 70s you mentioned would of been WW1 WW2 vetrains. SO maybe that's the reason parents viewed them with respect durring those times.
*Catweazle is a distant cousin of Worzel Gummage*
If you're not selling those "catweazle rules ok" t-shirts you're missing a trick lads😂😂😂
Scrawling it on a shirt with a sharpie as we speak matey! x
Reading a book about FC St Pauli and there is a story in there about Kevin Keegan, a Hamburg player, going to a wresting show at Millentor because one of the wrestlers was a friend of his. When the fans found out they booed the normally popular babyface whenever he returned to Hamberg. So wanted it to be Catweazel although it was actually Marty Jones. Which does explain why in a match on here the Hamburg crowed are cheering Rocco and booing Jones.
I must say, the mental image I have of British wrestling after watching a bunch of these videos is so bonkers that Catweazle only seems out of place for how ordinary he is. I mean, between Rollerball Rocco and Big Daddy vs some guy dressed as an actual nazi, Catweazle just seems like some audience member who somehow got into the ring and nobody wanted to admit they messed up so they just let him stay.
16:24 Bryan Danielson held Rollerball Rocco's old World Heavy Middleweight title in 2003. Not that you'll catch Fin Martin allowing it to be mentioned in his magazines.
As I kid I watched WoS wrestling for the comedians , Les kellet, Catweazle, Mick McMichael & Vic Faulkner.
Secretive friendships with forest-bound, elderly men? What could go wrong?
worked alright for young King Arthur didn't it?
"Ooooo-Eeheeheee-Bumtickle."
Hmmm...Is Catweasel gonna be my new character for WWE 2K23 MyRise? We shall see
Was that Bryan Danielson? Wow. Looks up Catwezle, he was called The Gentle Giant. What a nice nickname.
Another tired gimmick, you can't move in the indies for 11 centaury time travelling wizard characters.
My Nan actually dated Catweazel back in the day. My mum remembers him hanging around their kitchen. Imagine the fucking horror
I had no idea I live near where catweazle was from!!! They should have a blue plaque on his old house😂😂🐈⬛🦨
Was that brian danielson giving that speech to british wrestlers
Yes
Another great episode. Please do the Pat Paterson / DX skid marks incident on Rikishi & May Young being power bombed of the entrance stage by The Dudley’s
They make the videos from old episodes of the podcast. If they haven't covered it on the pod, it won't be in a video unfortunately
@@stevenrose86 ok thanks for the info 😊
Who was in the womens division Super Gran ?
Yes, and Grotbags was the Super stiff Vader style Heel!
the lady with the plane off of Come Outside
Ok guys I got some questions, this is really the first time I've seen British pro wrestling, and thank you for that.#1 Why is the ring so small, is it so the action will be quicker? If so kudos! #2 what the Hell did they use to make the ring wood? I mean did Haystack ever just break a ring in half? I definitely will say that in the 80s you guys had the action, best pro wrestling work in the world. Thanks guys love your channel!
British wrestling was quite unique. It was more like a fixed Greco-Roman wrestling match with jokes thrown in.
I was maybe 12 the first time I saw American wrestling, and I couldn't believe what I had seen!! I had never seen a chair shot, and when I saw Hercules wrap a chain around his fist and hit Billy Jack Hayes, causing him to bleed, I thought wrestling was a 100% shoot.
I think the rings were small because pro wrestling in the UK on the whole took place in small venues, town halls and the like. It rarely went into arenas. Big Daddy used Wembley Arena a couple of times but that was about it. The biggest venue regularly used was the Albert Hall. A venue more associated with the Promenade Concerts. But I think even there the capacity's only about 5000. At its peak though wrestling got big TV audiences in the UK. Even the Queen was said to be a fan.
@@vordman I must have been to maybe 10 events as a kid. All at the Demontfort Hall, in Leicester. I can remember being the only child there, and everyone drinking and woman trying to fight the wrestlers. There was more aggression in the audience than in the ring
The first WWF TV show I saw in Jan '87 I wondered why the ring was so LARGE
@@Kirkland-rv5jf Were you there when Spiros Arion fought Colin Joynson? The crowd went berserk and threatened to storm the ring. Arion got hit by someone's shoe!
"Bejams" there's one for the teenagers.
I think my grandma used to shop there.
@@ashtonalmond9024 Pete here - Bejams is one of those mystical places southerners talk about as being a big part of their childhood but I've never been to one. It's gutting. It really is..
I love learning wrestling history, and it's really neet learning about British wrestling history . Might I suggest a look into spudnik Monroe.
There must be a new one, an Ultimo Catweazle.
Definitely a great comedy wrestlers ever. I mean Eddie was great, Christian and Edge, Angle too but catweastle lol. Jim Breaks was also a great cowardly snidey heel
I remember his false teeth falling out during a match. His finest moment.
I saw him wrestle at Butljn's either in Clacton or Bognor Regis sometime around 1979-1981. Crowd loved him
YES! I love this channel!
I am a TV addicted and I remember Catweazel. It got a re-run in the early 80s after Worzel Gummidge came along. I do not remember things that happened. I just remember watching them. Worzel Gummidge was funnier.
Fellas, you are consistently hilarious. Had to subscribe.
someone needs to edit the Armthorpe wiki entry.
He looks like a guy who would call himself 'Wise Owl' and pretend to be a scout-leader..
Very excited about the forthcoming 3 part documentary "The Catweaselmen of Britain"
See, I'd never had a visual of 70's/80's British Wrestling. Shocked that it appears to be exactly what I'd pictured.
I'm looking forward to more CatWeazle videos ☺️
Catweazle was stopped by the police for speeding. He told them his name is Gary Cooper. The police thought he was joking. The police took Catweazle to the police station. Catweazle called his manager. His manager came to the police station and explained to them he is Gary Cooper.
I'm enraptured by this entire universe of UK wrestling of which I was completely unaware (other than Giant Haystacks and Big Daddy of course) until now. You guys should do a collab with OSW and review a UK PPV.
1950’s-1980’s British media makes me feel weird to look at
It is strangely discomfiting and I can't tell why
Great video! Now I've got to see more of Catweazle! I'm going to have to look up the tv show. It looks stupid as hell and I love me some stupid tv shows! It seems like old creepy dudes now have fuller beards. Catweazle resembles a young modern meth head. I really hope you don't have that problem in England. We're eat up with it here in America.
A Austrian American female wrestler named Abby Jane stolen he's gimmick, if you don't believe me search Abby Jane.
8:55 mark what’s with that kick and outfit worn by the referee? Love your videos
Looks like Brian Crabtree ( Big Daddy's brother) who used to do things like that to stop rope grabbers spoiling the fight, the refs were as much a part of it all as the wrestlers.
he looks a cross between Chris tarrant and worzel gummidge.
The difference between Les and Catweasle was Les was good.
I think wwe thought of Bryan Danielsson as a type of Catweazel type character for a while there.
When I was younger, my mum used to say i looked like catweazle. I never understood what she meant til many years later. Seeing this made me chuckle.
His nose is epic!
Excellent. Now I can send this link to anyone British and demand they explain their culture.
Making a gimmick last 20 + years after a short lived TV show.
That essentially makes catweasle the UK Jushin thunder liger
Loved him when I was a kid. Was my favourite at the time.
Lol there's no more catweasle men in Britain all the catweasle men got replaced
17:20 Kent was okay with comedians if they had wrestling skill and did things that were clever wrestling as well as amusing. Case in point Vic Faulkner.
CAtweazle just about made the grade with his pop up tricks while reversing an armbar.
Ok, that Game ending KILLED ME! HAHAHA
The editing of these is FLAWLESS!
Reminds me of Paddy Pimblett
Catweazle & HHH, that could have been an odd tag team. 😂
The big difference between UK wrestling and the US is in America it is described as sports
entertainment but portrayed as being real whereas in the UK it is described as theater as in
a staged event no different than a Broadway play or musical. In the US they drive their cars
from the left side while in the UK they drive their cars from the right side. Although the details
might be described differently regarding each individuals driving experiences it's still a car with
four wheels and a steering wheel that needs gas in order to travel down roads that look identical
on both sides of the pond so whats the real difference? ahahahaha
This is Awesome.
Judith rang 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
CatWeasel died in 1991 of feline AIDS.
@jamesblevin5088 That's weird theirs a relatives comment on here that states he passed away in 1993 of cancer.
Simply Brilliant!
