Fabulously video 😊 it’s very difficult to work out landscape changes that could have just happened naturally over time. The steam may have came up to the path and the pathway down the side of the steam may have been apart of the steam. Back then many people would have washed in steams so I wouldn’t have thought the area would have been as secluded as it seems now. He could have committed the murder somewhere different and waited until dark to dump her remains. So sad 😢 I wonder if there were any more murders that took place ?
Hello from the U.S. Wow! Even in death she isn't remembered until people like you and Vickie try to find the real story. This whole story was just so sad. I usually agree with Vickie's theories. Can't wait for the next one.
Many thanks Emma. The story is truly horrific. And despite it being so old a tale, you still feel for Ann and what she much have gone through. It's frightening.
Another harrowing but oh so interesting story from the past. A poor innocent young girl hacked to bits is incomprehensible, I was glad to hear he got full retribution for this heinous crime. Keep the videos and stories coming they are excellent.

Thank you so much. Lovely to see Vicki taking a more active part. I love the way you present these vlogs, the images you use make them extra special. Dare I say enjoyable? Even though the content is so sad. Poor Ann may she rest in peace. Thanks again x
Great (if gruesome) story......i agree with Vickie, there is no way a person with such inclinations would wait until their 50s to act upon them! He has probably got away with allkinds until he was eventually held to account.Cheers again for such interesting and well told stories👏👏
Hi criss and vickie it does not matter how you tell these story’s you always get them right as for vickie input even better as for the story a pauper in those day she was nothing but she was a girl and vulnerable and for money would do anything you have to feel sorry for her as for him he got what we all want as for yous two another great history lesson thanks

A fantastic but gruesome story. Thank you once again for your time and dedication. I've now worked my way through all of these wonderful stories on the channel and loved them all, but this one is particularly creepy. Cooking her leg meat...good grief, thank goodness they kept it! I loved your analysis of how, what prrovoked him and where this crime could have taken place, not easy to do but it adds to the story. Thanks guys. One question, where do the wonderful illustrative drawings you use come from?
We use several AI resources online. Those that are animated (such as the shot of the girl walking in the woods) we do pay for. The 'still' images are free. There are a few resources online, but many are paid to use services once 'credits' run out. We just think they do help with the stories as we can overlay them when we feel there is too much of myself or vickie on-screen just talking into the camera. The images help to break that up a little.
Thank you for that beautiful walk, how sad that such a place was the scene of a ghoulish murder. I like that you tried to find poor , forgotten Anne's grave. Youse two work well together. Not once did Vickie have to say " EXCUSE me ! I hadn't finished speaking".
Trust me, off camera she is more like a movie director! Alway's prompting me and saying I should do this or that in the way I try to talk about a certain detail or moment that had occurred in the story 😊

If he had been a grave digger that would have given him the opportunity to hide her remains, which may indicate that he wanted to be caught?
Honestly, we come across many stories when we are looking into a completely different story! We may be researching, let's say, the cannibal of Congleton, and then we find other stories in the newspapers, which can be just as interesting, and then we get sidetracked 😆 but it's all good as it just gives us even more to look into.
I think the poor and vulnerable have been victims throughout time. Probably Samuel believed Ann would be overlooked if she went missing because of her social status. That shows him to be devious to begin with. You definitely have to be a psychopath to commit such an act as murder and dismemberment, and to say it was because he wanted to see what human meat tasted like be it like pork, shown him to be evil. If Samuel lured Ann to that spot with the promise of something for favours, that was calculating in itself. A sad but good story Chris and Vicky, well told and debated throughout.
I’m wondering was he ever responsible for other incidents but as a freelance butchers assistant travelled to other areas therefore never getting caught The day he encountered Ann something “Snapped” carrying out the frenzied attack Was the “tasting “ of human flesh an excuse or a genuine reason? Either way a grizzly tale & thank you again Chris & Vickie for making another excellent video One I’d never heard of before
She did suffer a terrible death god bless her. I think that was a fantasy he was carry for some time and as he aged it got worse, after seeing Ann that day something triggered in his brain and he thought it's now or never as he might not get such a chance again. What I have notice with the older crimes it didn't take long to catch the culprit yet with all our dna and such it usually takes a longer time these days. Another story well told worth waiting for. 👏👏👏
Many thanks Sarah. This is a story Vickie has wanted to cover for ages now and we are glad to finally have visited Congleton to do it. The place looks really nice on first glance, and to be honest, it is - but its the stories we heard from locals about local youths and the drugs issue they are encountering in those woods. Apparently a lot of youths congregate where that bridge is and also where we were filming at the waters edge.
Totally agree Sarah, back in them days no messing about, but with all technology we have takes forever at tax payers expense. Thanks for watching and commenting, glad you enjoyed the video 😊
@DaysofHorror I agree it looks beautiful chris but yet it has an eerie look of it, but not surprisingly in lou of what happened I always think an area ,house etc gives of vibes that nasty people etc congregate down though time. Once again brilliantly told by you and vicky.
For one thing current criminals have the advantage of mobility, aka speedy transportation. Back in the old days many folks never ventured more than a mile or two from where they were born. No truck driving serial killers, or state jumping child abusers.
Shame poor Anne Smith what a terrible end to her life, and she was only 22 years old 😢. But I agree that if he went after her in the woods how did he know that she would've been there, he must have lured her to go there with the intention of killing her, but giving her another story. Good thing that Justice was done by hanging him. Thanks Chris and Vicky for another interesting story that goes back many years.
Hi" have U looked into the 1970s murder in Congleton on the tattoo day in the park of a young girl whose body was found near the park .I myself attended that tattoo as a young girl would be a good one for U to uncover more details about enjoyed your videos 👍

Your luck can only change now, so keep that positive mind set ❤❤ Thank you for the kind comments, it does help we love doing what we do and more so that you, and all who watch enjoy our content and glad you find it relaxing during your darkest time. ❤❤❤
I wonder if he killed poor Ann to try human flesh and he saw Ann as a poor lady and worthless in his eyes. Anyone who could do this must have seen Ann as somehow subhuman. It surely is a monstrous act indeed.
When questioned, Samuel admitted he did it just to see if what he had been told was right - that human flesh tasted like pork. He had an urge to try it and unfortunately, Ann was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
My guess is that Ann Smith could've been an opportunistic murder. He was out walking, perhaps with murder in mind and carrying just the one knife rather than all of his butchering tools. He saw Ann and how small she was so thought she would be an easy target. It's such a shame that he felt the need to kill somebody in order to taste human flesh. Being a grave digger it's possible that he could've had access to a newly deceased corpse and taken some flesh from that person instead of murdering somebody. Absolutely tragic.
Being winter the brook would have been swollen, plus less greenery around, so he might have seen or heard her singing along the footpath, perhaps they knew each other. I would have thought he would carry his knife or knifes around with him, as he would have been a freelance butcher, working on farms as well.
It's awful, isn't it just what one human being can do to another. And let's be honest, we are committing even worse horrific crimes even today. I just don't understand it and I don't think I ever will.
Our aim is to get around a lot more now, especially as the channel is growing. We don't want it to be all Lancashire as we have a lot of subscribers now coming on board from everywhere 😀 it's not that easy, though, as we have to plan trips around money, time, if we need to stay overnight etc. And as we both work full time, we can now only do these trips at weekends.
Yes, for this story we travelled to Congleton. We have a full diary planned and trying to visit more places, but obviously time is against us when working full time as only have weekends available, but rest assured plenty still planned for the Lancashire area too,we just want to mix it up. 😊
Yes, we watch it, I do not know why, just fir the banter I think! I'm always shocked at how quick they can sort out the unsettling feeling in these premises overnight! Thanks Joanne for watching 😊
Great story & well presented, you both bring amazing content thank you for sharing looking forward to the next one, all i can say is please like & subscribe 😊
Yeah, nothing paranormal there. A young couple turned up about an hour after we filmed the segment next to the waters edge. They spent about 10 mins there.
What a ghastly tale, it reminds me of Jack The Ripper's last victim Mary Anne Kelly he just obliterated her. I don't quite understand why he felt he had to completely cut poor Anne up. At least they got the killer and delt with him occordingly he would of been hanging there for some years I would of thought.
21:05 interesting to note paup (meaning pauper as seen in others on the list) is crossed out and "by Sam Thorley" added in a different ink. This implies her pauper status was removed. With the pauper being crossed out it would imply someone paid for her burial.
We are glad someone else spotted that! When we came across the burial record, we noticed it too. Also, the curator at St. Peter's mentioned when he replied to our email about the location of Ann's grave.
Thanks!

The day he encountered Ann something “Snapped” carrying out the frenzied attack
Was the “tasting “ of human flesh an excuse or a genuine reason?
Either way a grizzly tale & thank you again Chris & Vickie for making another excellent video
One I’d never heard of before
Thanks Luna, glad you enjoyed 😊
Little late tonight but got here eventually ❤❤❤
Thanks Hazel for your support, from Vickie 👍
Just horrible. The World has always been violent !
Yes, totally agree Lorraine 😢

Good lord, im born and bred in Congleton. Ive never come across this story, many thanks for covering it... i shall now do some research
Please do, and if you find anything we have missed, please let us know 🙏 It's truly barbaric what Thorley did.
Thanks Rosemary for watching and commenting 😊
A Tragic Story Very Well told Guy.s
Thanks Jon 👍
Thank you Jon, glad you enjoyed 😊
Shame poor Anne Smith what a terrible end to her life, and she was only 22 years old 😢. But I agree that if he went after her in the woods how did he know that she would've been there, he must have lured her to go there with the intention of killing her, but giving her another story. Good thing that Justice was done by hanging him. Thanks Chris and Vicky for another interesting story that goes back many years.
Yes so young 😢
Thanks Shirley for watching, glad you enjoyed the video 😊
Hi" have U looked into the 1970s murder in Congleton on the tattoo day in the park of a young girl whose body was found near the park .I myself attended that tattoo as a young girl would be a good one for U to uncover more details about enjoyed your videos 👍
That's a story I don't think I've heard of before? I'll have to see what we can find on this. Thanks so much for the heads-up.
Another intresting story, not know to me Thanks guys
Thanks Wendy 😊
Anne must have been terrfied. It must have taken ages to dismember her body. Flipping brilliant guys. Love our Vickie she knows what shes on about.
Thank you so much Dawn. Now we have two wireless mics, Vickie can talk more now on or off camera, which does help my when we are out filming.
Back at ya Dawn! So kind ❤
@Daysofhorror-vickie rrr Vickie your just fabulous. Don't ask me why but you your husband & channel really relax me. Had a terrible year this year & it's getting no better apart from finding you guys. My partner lost his job I lost mine. My mum is very ill nearly lost her in February. But I lost my sister a few weeks ago& I'm struggling to cope with it & every thing else. Finding you guys all be it true crime has helped me relax & listen to something I'm so interested in. I adore you two. Vickie is the bomb. It's so refreshing to see a couple together doing this sort of thing. So thank you.
Omg Dawn you have been through the mill. Sending positive vibes to you and your husband on the job front ❤
Sorry to hear the loss of your sister, just remember all the good times and childhood times with her. I do believe in energy and she will be there with you in spirit. Again I'm sorry your mum has been poorly, hope she is on the mend. Your luck can only change now, so keep that positive mind set ❤❤
Thank you for the kind comments, it does help we love doing what we do and more so that you, and all who watch enjoy our content and glad you find it relaxing during your darkest time.
Awful Linda, just horrific 😢
My guess is that Ann Smith could've been an opportunistic murder. He was out walking, perhaps with murder in mind and carrying just the one knife rather than all of his butchering tools. He saw Ann and how small she was so thought she would be an easy target.
It's such a shame that he felt the need to kill somebody in order to taste human flesh. Being a grave digger it's possible that he could've had access to a newly deceased corpse and taken some flesh from that person instead of murdering somebody.
Absolutely tragic.
Horrific 😢
@@Daysofhorror-vickie yes..
Being winter the brook would have been swollen, plus less greenery around, so he might have seen or heard her singing along the footpath, perhaps they knew each other. I would have thought he would carry his knife or knifes around with him, as he would have been a freelance butcher, working on farms as well.
Plausible, shame we will never know. Thanks for watching 😊
A big fan of true crime..New subscriber from northern Ireland uk. 😊
Thanks for subbing, and hope you liked the video from Vickie & Chris
@@DaysofHorror Interesting content 😊
😊
If you've got a gut feeling trust it!
I always follow my gut these days, good feeling to have. Thanks Michelle from Vickie
Another true crime of horror, how do we get to in the mind of this evil monster to understand why he did what he did . 😮
It's awful, isn't it just what one human being can do to another. And let's be honest, we are committing even worse horrific crimes even today. I just don't understand it and I don't think I ever will.
I don't know if I want too 😮. Thanks Sue for watching 😊
Love to listen to the stories ..sad for the Victims ..May they Rest in Peace..
Many thanks Angela.
I sort of agree… something happened.. a possible psychological breakdown
Yes, i think so too. Thanks Kara for watching and commenting 😊
you have moved from Lancashire for this story i think Congleton is Derbyshire still good story and Video.
WOW what a bizarre and tragic story as if the woman didn’t have a hard enough life as it was. Very well documented once again guys.
Thanks Mike. It was a lovely yet earie area. Have a great week from Vickie & Chris 😀
You mean help my house is haunted i seen that one with Russell Watson
Yes, we watch it, I do not know why, just fir the banter I think! I'm always shocked at how quick they can sort out the unsettling feeling in these premises overnight! Thanks Joanne for watching 😊
A very sad outcome for Ann and a bizarre and disturbing crime. 😢
😢
Great story & well presented, you both bring amazing content thank you for sharing looking forward to the next one, all i can say is please like & subscribe 😊
More to come Lee! We have absolute loads of stories all pencilled in. Some more recent, but mostly they are from the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Thanks Lee 👍
If Samuel himself didn't victim-blame, neither should we. Poor Anne
I don't see anyone victim blaming?
Good story
Thanks for watching
Thank you 😊
anyone notice the black dog through those trees i did!
Yeah, nothing paranormal there. A young couple turned up about an hour after we filmed the segment next to the waters edge. They spent about 10 mins there.
Yes 😊
He was a gravedigger. Why didn't he Bury her?
I presume that was the last thing on his mind that day. He just wanted to see what human flesh tasted like.
I lived in Congleton
What a ghastly tale, it reminds me of Jack The Ripper's last victim Mary Anne Kelly he just obliterated her. I don't quite understand why he felt he had to completely cut poor Anne up. At least they got the killer and delt with him occordingly he would of been hanging there for some years I would of thought.
Yes alot of similarities Jack. Thanks for watching and commenting from Vickie & Chris 😀
Counting down folks 😂
Not long now..
Speak tonight in chat from Vickie
👍
21:05 interesting to note paup (meaning pauper as seen in others on the list) is crossed out and "by Sam Thorley" added in a different ink.
This implies her pauper status was removed. With the pauper being crossed out it would imply someone paid for her burial.
Interesting, thanks for pointing this out 😊
We are glad someone else spotted that! When we came across the burial record, we noticed it too. Also, the curator at St. Peter's mentioned when he replied to our email about the location of Ann's grave.
You mean help my house is haunted i seen that one with Russell Watson
That's the one. The show is awful, but fun at the same time. We can't take what the 'team' find and do with the ghosts seriously, though.
