  • It was Kerry TD John O’Donoghue’s debut as Ceann Comhairle and he gave a textbook example of “a turn-up for the books”.
    The problem wasn’t that the new Ceann Comhairle’s ability to keep easily excitable deputies under control. It was more deputies not being able to keep an easily excitable Ceann Comhairle excitable.
    The man who is known as “The Bull” had finally found his china shop. By the time the rampage had come to an end a debate that should have taken half an hour had dragged on for almost three, two TDs had been chucked out of the house and anyone who dared to wave the red flag to him was trampled over with a verbal onslaught.
    O’Donoghue has many extraordinary qualities but one of them isn’t a long fuse.
    Perhaps he came into the chamber yesterday with the intention of laying down the law but it was hard to figure what law we were witnessing. Sure, John O’Donoghue was wearing the Cathaoirleach’s robes but at times you were unsure if you were in the Dáil or in the Wild West and whether he was the sheriff or the chief outlaw.
    Within three minutes of the start, his hackles had been raised. The mild-mannered Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny had gone over his three minutes and O’Donoghue was in no mood to play extra time.
    After a couple of exchanges, Kenny made the mistake of saying: “Quiet now, you are new in the job”.

    A little context here, there was drip feed of news pertaining to John O'Donoghue disgraceful expenses. So bad he had to resign in 2009, lost his seat in 2011 and pretty much kicked out of the FF party afterwards. A sample of a fraction of the expenses he claimed: "In May 2006, O'Donoghue used the government jet for a six-day journey at the cost of €32,450. O'Donoghue, accompanied by his wife, attended the Cannes Film Festival. He returned from Cannes to Kerry to attend the opening of new offices for the Fexco company in Killorglin. He then travelled from Kerry to Cardiff for the Heineken Cup final, which Munster won, and travelled back to Cannes by government jet. He went from Cannes to London for a Ryder Cup promotional event, before returning to Dublin on 24 May 2006"

    God there was something more palatable about this government and opposition than the mess we have now in Dail Eireann.
    Varadkar, Harris, Martin, Ryan, Mary-Lou, the furthest thing from strong leaders.

    Jesus rose to a new life and ascended to Heaven. O Donohue rose to a new title and descended to Limbo, which was subsequently closed with him safely inside out of harm's way. Mirabile Dictu.

    just really goes to show and demonstrates as to how kenny along with other FG TD's undermined any FF ceann comhairle's authority over the years for stupid political rivalry reasons.

    If Enda Kenny had been Taoiseach in 2007 most closed railway lines including The Western Rail Corridor connecting the provinces of Connacht, Munster & Ulster by train, Athlone to Mullingar and many other closed railway lines would be more reopened by now.

      @@craw.54 Why before Leo Varakdar was heard off and Enda Kenny Taoiseach more money would have been spent in rural Ireland on trains and public transport.

    • @craw.54
      @craw.54 2 роки тому +1

      I wouldn't say so considering how the election was held less than a year before the recession kicked off meaning that they couldn't have afforded to invested in public transport for rural Ireland. He probably would've campaigned for it in his first months of office in 2007 had he become Taoiseach and probably even promised it in the budget for 2008, however when the recession came in then he would've dropped his promise and essentially lied. It's perfectly obvious that they all have good intentions at the start but then when they get into government it's obviously a different story. That's how politics works unfortunately.

      @@craw.54 The Boom Years (1997-2007) there was a lot of scope. But in Recession Years (2008-2014) there ran out of money. Also when Bad Weather, Stroms, Floods or Heaving Snow Trains have to cancelled people don't travel in the short days near Christmas. If the governmeant could allow for 24 hour trains in summer months & St. Stephen's Day trains it would be great impression.
