No respect for Siskel whatsoever. If youi did not enjoy Aliens, especially seeing it at the cinema, then you have no business being a film critic. The whole issue with the "kid in peril" situation is so juvenile; it's an R-rated movie for crying out loud. I wonder what he thought of The Omen or The Exorcist.

I wonder how these guys felt about The Exorcist, because that film's much more unsettling than Aliens and uses the 'child in peril' a lot more. It's a little strange that they're acting like Aliens went too far when the 70s had some really grim movies with more nastiness than Aliens.

Gene Siskel is consistent… he also gave thumbs down to The Terminator.

I was a sophomore in high school when this came out and my buddy and I saw this eight times in the theater. Best action movie we had seen up to that point.

They "spoiled" the crap out of it!

Haha I thought I was just being over-sensitive but it turns out Aliens affected Ebert in much the same way! I saw it in the theater when it came out and I remember feeling violated and thinking that the movie crossed lines that shouldn't be crossed.

I was in my 20’s when this movie came out, and I was working at a couple of movie theaters as a 35mm projectionist. We had a night party at the theater with the crew and showed the movie for ourselves before the release date. It was so much fun! About a month before the release I was threading multiple projectors (which started on a timer) and we had Aliens trailers running. Well one of the projectors had a faulty pulley. These little pulleys would direct the film away from these horizontal platters and through the projector’s gate. One platter unwound the film, and another platter wound it (so we never rewound 35mm movies at the theater, like you had to do with 16mm or 8mm film). Well, this pulley failed, and an alarm went off, and the film got pulled too tight and snapped. The projector automatically shut down and the film draped itself across the floor. Lo and behold, some janitor had just waxed the porcelain tiled floor up there and it was still wet! So when I came skidding up to the projector from down the hall to fix the problem, I had to peel the Aliens trailer up off the floor like masking tape, and it left little pictures of Sigourney Weaver on the floor! Well anyway, just an old memory now that I enjoy sharing.

They didn't mention the directors for these movies back then, did they? It sounds as though most of the discussions focus on the lead actor and some of the plot instead of the director's creative approach to what is shown on-screen. Fortunately, the directors would later receive the attention they deserved and critiqued for his/her choice of source material, set dressing, etc.

I've seen the movie so many times that I no longer have "does Newt have an alien in her that's going to burst out and kill m-fers" anxiety... and I miss that...

Obviously they were WRONG one of the best movies of all time in my top 10 easy.

Alien was a masterpiece. The alien was intelligent and seemingly indestructible. IMO aliens didn't work because the creatures came across as nothing more than a horde of cockroaches.

The miniature effects with rockets that are fired at Superman look like something out of a cheap 60s Japanese movie. Most of the effects in this flick look like a serious downgrade from the first two. Yes it is a bad movie and I'm wondering how Ebert found it "fun" at all

What S&E totally missed is that this is SUPPOSED to be a roller coaster ride. So the action, once it starts is going to keep going.

They are wrong but also right - of course the child is going to live and it was the way she was rescued. But it's true this movie ( like too many - almost all- movies today) is loaded with cheap cliches.

Aliens was the first horror I saw in the theaters. It was so scary I couldn’t sleep for most of the night. Kudos to the film makers for making such a great movie.

Wow. They were completely overkill with negativity, they missed all of the positives. This review does not hold up well at all. Although, I always listened to Ebert more anyway... at least he could often look past personal tastes to see the intent of the movie.

These 2 guys could not help that they were from a different time, a simpler time, a BETTER time. I guess 'Aliens' looking back was right at the crossroads for some of a certain age. They were good guys, I totally understand where they were coming from, and it was a great action movie, as well-crafted as you could imagine, as the move still hold up 40 years later. There's no 'wrong' or 'right' here. Only a period in time, well captured.

This just goes to prove these two guys know dick about horror and science fiction. When you're 10 stuff like that at the end of the movie, that's the whole point of a horror movie! I saw this movie three times when it came out. It was phenomenal. These guys are a couple of dicks
