What if imposter syndrome isn’t what we think it is?

  • What would you rather? Have Imposter Syndrome for the rest of your life but never have to make a difficult decision? Or feel confident and deserving for the rest of your life and but never reach your full potential.
I can remember when I first experienced that familiar feeling we now call Imposter Syndrome. It was when I was going through fast jet flying training. Back in those days we didn't have a name for it. But I remember a fellow pilot describing how it felt to him - he said "I'm still waiting for someone to come up to me as I'm strapping into the jet, tap me on the shoulder and say we've finally got you, I don't know how you snuck through the net, but you shouldn't be here." (He went on to fly Typhoons so I'd argue he was a pretty bloody good pilot.)
I'm sure we can all relate to that feeling. And perhaps you wish you could be "free" of this feeling.
But what if this feeling we associate with Imposter Syndrome, is actually just the moment we realise we have a choice?
We can choose to stay in our comfort zone, being good at what we are already good at, or we can choose to push ourselves out of our comfort zone and achieve amazing things.
This video retells the moment I realised I had that choice. The moment I realised that it is an uncomfortable choice. And ultimately how I learned to see it as an exciting choice.
With huge thanks to Julie Howard from IVC Evidensia for sharing this footage and allowing me to share my story with the graduate vets at their conference earlier this year.
What about you. What would you rather? And what choice will you make?
    Go on... I dare you...
