Anessa is expensive for a sunscreen in Japan, but it also sells out regularly so I think that speaks volumes. I like the powdery feeling it leaves over the Biore aqua rich line.
Been using Anessa for years. It is GREAT for humid weather. Awesome protection when doing water sports as well. I use Korean sunscreen quite a bit these days but only for office / indoor days, when I know I need to be out doing outdoor stuff. Anessa is always my go to.
As a man with facial hair, I really wanna say thank you for mentioning the effect the sunscreens have on facial hair. This is something that hardly ever gets mentioned, even by male beauty influencers.

@@dawnpratt4608The Skin Aqua Super Moisture Milk is lovely! (White bottle, blue cap) I'm very sensitive. It's a chemical/mineral hybrid with newer chemical filters and zinc. No alcohol unlike most other Skin Aqua products if you are sensitive to that.
I have been using Skin Aqua for years now and I love it! It’s the only one I’ve consistently used and it’s been such a great moisturizer and sunscreen. The best sunscreen is the one you use. 💯
Thanks for this! During the hot and humid season as an oily person, I go back and forth from the Anessa Perfect UV sunscreen milk and the Biore UV Athlizm Skin Protect Essence. As a guy that sweats a lot, the sweat just beads up instead of pours down my face. And my skin isn’t an oil slick at the end of the day.
Hi. Ms. Cutie Patootie 💜 I have to say I have OFFICIALY found a sunscreen than does not burn my eyes even after crying (sad life lol) or sweating from the Texas humidity. It’s the P. Calm sunscreen you suggested the other day. Wonderful thing. I’ve tried the sunscreens you talk about in this video upon your rec and while cosmetically appealing, they burned my eyes 😭 Congrats on the new place Missy…❤
I buy as many bottles of Canmake Mermaid Skin Gel 50++++ every time I’m in Japan. It’s incredible. No irritation. Goes on like a light moisturizer. Dries down like a light moisturizer. No greasy, shiny stuff on the skin. No white cast. Goes perfectly under my makeup (i always give it 15 to 30 min to absorb and dry before makeup). It’s freaking phenomenal. Got my husband using it, cause he can’t stand any SPF that makes him feel and look greasy and sticky.
Also I absolutely adore the Nivea one, I would literally use that all the time if it was 4 stars. I have a beard and it just glides right in straight away. Feels amazing on the skin too.
Thank you for touching on how sunscreens feel/wear in hair-bearing areas. Would love a list of your favorite sunscreens for the beard area and larger body sites (arms, legs, etc) with hair. Thanks for the great video as always!
That Nivea is a must have for me. Everyone I've ever given this to use has been happily shocked by how nice it goes onto the skin, and how breathable it feels. The Nivea is the sunscreen I give to people who don't wear sunscreen because they say don't like the way it feels on their skin, and it always changes their mind on the subject
FYI Dr. Dray for Anessa. That is the 2022 formula that you tried. They have since renewed their entire line in Feb. 2024. It now comes with a slightly tweaked packaging, which is the exact image you used in the thumbnail of this video lol. The new bottle no longer has the sentence below the brand name at the front, and it now comes with a paperbox outer packaging too. The 2024 version is sooo good and it's my favorite Asian sunscreen overall.
Hi Dr Dray, Please give us all a tour of your new place when you get it all organized. I can’t wait to see it. Thank you for the sunscreen videos. Take Care🌻
I love Anessa as someone who lives in a massively humid region, it's quite price-y compared to other japanese options i've but i love it anyways. Minimal white cast as someone who's rather dark, I use 3-4 fingers of application. it's the only sunscreen i've tried that's both protective and cosmetically elegant. Also doesnt irritate my skin as every sunscreen i've tried before this one made my skin burn and itch. I really appreciate that it's quite durable as well against sweat and humidity. It pretty much doesnt move, however that does mean that a makeup remover or cleansing oil/balm is a must at the end of the day with anessa. Idk if the humidity booster is real or not, but im going to believe it does it is and it's another reason why i find it so useful for my region's climate. I had the best results clearing my hyperpigmentation with this despite being outside for a considerable amount of time with my dog
My MIL went to Japan last summer and asked me specifically what I wanted, so I told her Skin Aqua UV essence gel. Sent her a link with a pic and everything, but she still bought 2 tubes of the wrong version (tone up UV essence). She got me the green tinted ver. that helps with redness but goes on slightly white cast-y, as tone up SPFs often do.
"I know you're very excited about this Playstation game, so I bought it for you!" "Thanks dad, but it's not even the same game, and it's for Nintendo" "Oh" 🗿...
I have very oily and acne prone skin and I've tried so many different sunscreens and the Nivea UV Super Water Gel is the best one I've found, after it's applied it feels like nothing on the skin and I've never had it break me out, it's amazing!
As an Japanese, I’m so surprised that those sunscreens are popular in overseas! I use Skin Aqua series for daily use, it’s so good! KOSE is really good cosmetic company, one of my favorite
If you want the fragrance free version of the Anessa Perfect UV Skincare Milk, try the Anessa Perfect UV Mild Milk. Same finish but no fragrance and no alcohol
I appreciate that you take your time to use these sunscreens before putting out a review. Sometimes I go, "How come Dr. Dray is only reviewing these sunscreens now?" but that's probably for the better (instead of putting out a willy-nilly review for the sake of content).
Kao(Biore et al) and Nivea put a lot of R&D into their sunscreens. It’s not just about aesthetics and trendy botanical ingredients for them. They’re using and developing some of the most advanced water and rub resistance formulas alongside blends of filters that provide high protection across the UV spectrum in aesthetically pleasing products. Aside from L’Oréal (LRP specifically) I think Japanese Bioré and Nivea have the most innovative sunscreens and put them through rigorous testing to assure high efficacy. My holy grail is the Bioré UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence.
I would also suggest Biore Aqua Rich Watery Essence by KAO- it's a watery gel sunscreen (like the Skin Aqua and Nivea Super water Gel) , is water resistant, works well under make up, and it gives a really nice clear, watery glow and I like the way my skin looks without any make up! . It's my favorite!!
I live in Japan so thank you for reviewing. I usually grab whatever because I have no clue. I bought a sunscreen from Amazon Japan called NALC white wrinkle UV gel SPF 50 for my face. (wrinkle improvement whitening. Medicated. Made in Japan). I really like it. I tried before the brand Allna Organic but I wouldn't say I enjoyed it as much. Thanks for your content.
I swear by the Anessa sun milk. It feels velvety soft on your face. I went to Vietnam in October with 30°-35°C everyday and I didn't get a tan at all! Korean sunscreens are also nice but I do get a tan wearing those. So it's Japanse sunscreen all the way for me
Is the gold bottle similar to their pink sensitive one? I’m stuck on which one to get I have oily skin so I’d rather have one that isn’t shiny/greasy. Thanks!
I've been using the Nivea UV water gel for YEARS !!! it's truly the most comfortable, thin and invisible sunscreen I've ever used. The only thing is, if you sweat and get it in your eyes? YIKES it stings! I do use mineral only around my eyes due to this reason alone.
Anessa sunscreen also have sensitive skin friendly versions , but I still perfer the one you try this time, I find it very good at oil control through out the whole humid and hot day in Taiwan.😊
I recently started trying out Japanese sunscreen and I absolutely love it. It's my holy grail now. Kose Suncut perfect milk. I absolutely love it. It's been a long long run to find a sunscreen I love that much ❤
You made me tingle the minute I read Japanese sunscreens 😂😂 So funny as I was an avid user is the skin aqua, it’s so elegant and I never burned with it. It didn’t effect me at all but I’m a 50 year old guy now and I always wondered if the alcohol long term would effect/age my skin a little so I went onto denatured alcohol free spf. However….. I was reading about the update with the more water, sweat resistant so I bought one again. I adore the size of them and they’re so cheap, around £12 here in the UK. Tried it today for the first time and it’s still just as elegant and awesome as I remember. Always get a little eye sting if I sweat a lot but apart from that I adore those stuff. RMK, Kanebo, Twany, KOSE these are all Japanese brands that make excellent sunscreen for face. It goes extremely well with foundation. Truly recommend.
Thank you for talking about the Nivea sunscreen. Even though it is only 3 plus any sunscreen is better than no sunscreen. This one was a total game changer for me.
I've never tried a Japanese sunscreen but after hearing your reviews on these, I want to give them a try. Thanks, Dr Dray! Happy Monday!! I hope you have a lovely evening. 💕
The older version of the Nivea sunscreen is the ultimate lightweight sunscreen, together with BOJ, are the most comfortable sunscreen for people with oily skin, living in places with high humidity.
I've been wanting to try Japanese sunscreen for awhile and I'm so disappointed that they don't make larger sizes -- but you managed to find some larger ones! Yay! Time to update my wishlist. Thank You!
I personally only use biore uv aqua rich water essence the peony scent(i love the floral smell of it) and gotta say it has a good texture by itself a great moisturizer with spf
I recently found out there is a pink version of Anessa for sensitive skin, and I think, I think, it really better for me than the blue version. I had some bumps after cleaning the sunscreen with the blue one, but situation improved with the pink version.
The UV water gel from Nivea is THE BEST I've ever used for my body. It did get my eyes itchy, so I stopped wearing it on my face. Still, one of my faves forever
I used old versions of Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreen Skincare 'Milk' and 'Gel' two years ago. Surprisingly I prefered GEL than Milk. It was just more comfortable to apply on.
It’s good as a body sunscreen, but not my favorite. Good value for the money, though! I won’t purchase again because I won’t buy from Stylevana anymore.
Anessa probably gives the best finish ever and makes the skin look so even and nice after application. It has just the right level of matte with a bit of sheen. But as Dr Dre mentioned the film former, I realized that is probably the reason why it is soooooo difficult to get off the face. I guess it's good that it adheres to the skin well, but man, if you don't take the extra effort to clean it off with a makeup remover/oil first, it can literally be stuck on your skin and can actually cause breakouts. Also, I hate the feeling I get on my hands after application and thus, I have to use a makeup remover/oil/etc. to wash it off before I head out. If I don't do that, I can literally feel the sensation of a film on my hand throughout the day. So, if you don't mind a bit more effort, Anessa is a great one (besidses the fragrance...which surprisingly I can tolerate even though I am very sensitive to smells that linger as it gives me bad migraines/nausea). Another thing I heard recently was the new labels of Japanese sunscreens will now include water resistance indicator. I have already seen it on some brands.
I got all of them, the new formulas whilst so cosmetically elegant & price-friendly, they sting my eyes & I don't know why! 😭 The best sunscreen is the one that I can frequently use and reapply - so for me, I keep returning to the La Roche posay invisible fluid.
I think the most practical solution to do, is to actually visit Japan and try more sunscreens. There are SO many good options that don't get talked about, and instead everybody recommends the same ones over and over again.
ever since you recommended the skin aqua super moisture milk UV (which feels like years ago), I have been using it and loving it since! thanks for the new recommendations!
Arigato Dr Dray. We love Japanese sunscreen and they really have the technology to stay better and protect better with very detailed claims and now also ocean friendly. Like major cosmetics groups in the West, Shiseido, Kanebo, Kose and Kao are the big four companies that have many brands under its parent’s company. They are especially good for high humid weather and also are small in size to carry in your chic purse. With Yen historically low, for those lucky to visit Japan one can get them in many places like, including 7-11.
Kosé has exceptionally high quality sunscreens in its Pro Defense and Intelligé Ex line, the latter available only in a specific Japanese drugstore chain, Cosmos.
One of my go-to sunscreens for my acne-prone skin is littlllextra rice berry sunscreen with SPF 50+. The major issues I face with a lot of sunscreens are whether they cause breakouts or they leave my skin dry and irritated. However, this sunscreen doesn't do this and it applies great under makeup which as an acne-prone girl I nearly daily wear.
I recall a friend recommended riceberry sunscreen to me over the summer, and I got it right away. I’ve been using it since then, and I’ve absolutely loved it! I have combination skin. I’ve even introduced my mom to this product. It has such a great finish. I’ve also tried the Requil one, but idk why I don’t like how it just feels like it’s just sitting on my face. So, riceberry any day.
@shrabostidutta4665 everywhere I go,I see these litlleberry comments. I have never heard of the brand before so I was skeptical. Afteing seeing your comments I realised these are paid/promo comments
I initially liked the Skin Aqua UV Barrier because it is lightweight and didn’t irritate my eyes, but it does leave a noticeable shine. However, it did not adequately protect my skin from the spring and summer UV Rays as I experienced sunburns despite applying it multiple times. I also tried the SunCut UV perfect gel SPF 50+(2024 version), which provided better protection but gave me a sort of golden tan and irritated my eyes after some time. The SunCut was okay in humid weather but I still got slightly sunburned from the summer sun. I am using Sport sunscreens from Coppertone, BananaBoat, and Neutrogena. The Neutrogena Beach Defense SPF 70 lotion doesn’t irritate my eyes, but it doesn’t hold up well in humid weather when sweating on the face and neck, because I got sunburn, but my arms and legs didn’t .
I do love the Nivea one a lot. Can you comment on the difference in protection that one less “+” makes? The skin Aqua one is nice, but regrettably, it does end up stinging my eyes a little. 😢
If you don’t mind me asking, how’s the finish on the anessa one she recommended? I’ve seen comments saying the pink bottle is the same as the blue bottle without fragrance is that true?
I love Trader Joe's Facial Sunscreen SPF 40, but it hasn't been on the shelf this summer. I just got back from TJ's. Great news, it's back on the shelf! I bought three 😎
The Super Water Gel applies like a dream but it only has one UVA filter (Uvinul A Plus) that isn't great at covering the entire UVA1 spectrum, especially 390-400nm.
These are interesting and I’ve tried several Asian sunscreens. However, nothing tops DRMTLGY tinted sunscreen for me. I dabble with others, but it’s the one I came back to over and over.
Thx! I love the Skin Aqua. I am outside often, working sometimes I'm on a farm and sweating my a$$ off in the Southeast U.S. (esp this summer!), and this is my pick this summer for being outdoors. I do powder it down, though, because it is super shiny and I'm oily in the Tzone. I wish there were a way to get these Japanese and Korean products faster, though (and I know about Amazon but sometimes the stuff on Amazon is not authentic, so I don't always trust it), because it takes forever for me to get them and I have to pre-plan my summer sunscreen hauls and I have run out of some but can't get them quickly enough.
Have you checked out the apps Weee! And Yamibuy? I usually get my sunscreens there. Those apps are like an Asian version of Amazon based in the USA and sometimes I get my orders same day or next day. Hope they’re in your area, good luck!
Anesa is one of my favorite sunscreens ( all formulas). In my las trip to Asia I bought the new Aqua sunscreen but did not try it yet. I am happy that it is also a good choice.

RMK, Kanebo, Twany, KOSE these are all Japanese brands that make excellent sunscreen for face. It goes extremely well with foundation.
Truly recommend.
I love the Nivea water gel and I use it just because of the pump. I actually apply it because it’s so easy
I did not even realize thy changed it. Good to know.
These reviews Help me tremendously, year after year, THANK YOU!!
Happy Monday, Dr. Dray❤
Morning!
I used old versions of Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreen Skincare 'Milk' and 'Gel' two years ago. Surprisingly I prefered GEL than Milk. It was just more comfortable to apply on.
I'm so glad you were able to make your move to your new house despite the hurricane. Hopefully you won't be tortured by the fire alarm any more!! 😃
The nivea one is also refillable! They sell refill pouches on Stylevana. I wonder if you've tried the Biore one, Dr. Dray? I also like that one.
On Stylvana I bought Verdio UV Moisture Gel Water Proof for my body. Never used but excited to try!
I feel seen. I had just commented a few weeks ago that I would love to see some Japanese sunscreens - and voila! 🎉
Dr Dray! Happy new moving and please remain safe 👻 watching now a new needed dose of your miraculous blog ✨
Happy Monday!
Kose Suncut is my favourite sunscreen line! Plus super cheap compared to any other Korean sunscreen
The Anessa has a pink bottle without fragrance for sensitive skin
@@pretowong is it good for oily skin?
Good morning Dr Dray ❤
Morning!
Kosé has exceptionally high quality sunscreens in its Pro Defense and Intelligé Ex line, the latter available only in a specific Japanese drugstore chain, Cosmos.
Yay! I’m excited to try Anessa sunscreen!
It's very annoying to see this kind of promotional fake comments
Hi Dr. Dray! Love from Canada ❤️ I’m your fan since 2016!
Morning!
I do love the Nivea one a lot. Can you comment on the difference in protection that one less “+” makes?
The skin Aqua one is nice, but regrettably, it does end up stinging my eyes a little. 😢
I love Japanese/Korean skin care and sunscreen... Thank you for you indepth review!!! ❤
Happy Monday doctor ❤❤
Happy Monday!
Kose suncut super waterproof sun essence is one of favorites for swimming 👌❤️
Yes it’s so good. My dad hates putting things on his skin but doesn’t mind this
I love the Nivea watery gel!! Just discovered it this month.
I love Japanese Sunscreen especially the Suncut Perfect UV Gel. ❤
More Japanese skincare please!
Maybe I need to try the Nivea, as much trouble as I have! Thank you!❤️
Please do a video on water resistant Japanese sunscreen
On the Anessa you need do try the one in the tube. The bottle is for oily skin.
Hi Dr. Dray…hope you are adjusting to your new place. Thanks for this review❤
thank you
I live in Japan and Anessa is like the number one drugstore sunscreen 😊
I am using the Nivea one and really enjoy it.
There’s a fragrance & alcohol free version of Anessa (the Mild Milk one with pink bottle). Perhaps you can try & review it out sometime!
Thanks for the info
I have been using Anessa since I was 20 and I’m 31 years old! Even if I try other sunscreens I always get back to it!
Hi where do you purchase it from
The Nivea one is the only sunscreen I’ve found that doesn’t pill under my makeup and I can use with my moisturizer without any issues.
Anesa is one of my favorite sunscreens ( all formulas). In my las trip to Asia I bought the new Aqua sunscreen but did not try it yet. I am happy that it is also a good choice.
I just got the nivea super water gel and it's OHHHH SOOOOO GOOOOOOD. If you can't grab this one try isntree watery sun gel, it's quite similar in the feeling
Loved the video! Yesstyle recently had a sale and I bought a whole bunch of sunscreens to try. My go to is the biore watery essence. Im going to check out that store you mentioned Teso. I did go to the one in the Gallaria but didn't like many of the options they had.
Happy Monday🥰thx for the great video
Love love love the nivea so lightweight and cast free (my facial seem to have taken a liking to that particular sunscreen 😅).
