In 'Murica!, the City of Chicago school district paid school bus service companies some $30 million USD to keep paying bus drivers when school was out of session due to Covid. Instead, the bus companies kept the money, and applied for Federal loans to ride out the Covid shutdown and pay the drivers. There was no contractual language requiring the bus companies to pay the money back to the district if they didn't pay drivers, so the City of Chicago taxpayers take another hit for political and professional incompetence.

Regarding addblue, we could just re-progam the computers in the trucks to ignor the adblue level until they fix the supply issues.
Addblue does not affect engine running at all.
It is just that the computer "de-rates" the engine if you run out.
If it is a choice between a little more polution and having actual food in the shops, I know what my vote is.

Well done John. Loved the awards and in particular the award to Honda who still produce red vehicles with the added feature of transforming its paint work to dusky pink…just add sun… and in our case we had a super fast reactive paint on our Honda Euro Accord which after 4 years shed the glossy red for shades of dusky pink that no matter how much wax or policy was applied, continued its colour transformation. As for customer service, it quickly disappeared with the air conditioning coolant that requires re-gassing every year as Honda refuses to fix the issue even after it was first reported in the first year of ownership…its the condenser and despite it leaking for the entire life of the vehicle, they have refused to replace. Surely an award winning service in the anti - awards categories for 2021.

merc should get an honorable mention here, a friend of mine owns a merc W220 with the supercharged v8 in it, he brought it after selling his fairlady z(against my recommendations).
before it even got home(2 hour drive from another city) it died 1 hour out, got towed back to the dealer, and sent into the shop, they had it checked by a merc authorized mechanic, and it needed an entire new fuel system, new pumps, new fuel pipes, harness, some computer in relation to it all.
    total cost $4438 + $250 for towing.
Luckily the dealer had to pay for that.
a week later, it blew a high pressure oil line under the car, a new one would be over $1500 and would take 6 months to get, I told him to take the hose to his hydraulic shop(he works in heavy industry) and I bet they could make a new one with the old fittings, they did, and its cost $150 to make and can now handle 5000PSI or more.
two weeks go by.. then the front right coil pack breaks into a collection of plastic pieces, apparently whenever the engine torques over, the harness pulls on the coil pack, and breaks the connector part off the pack.
another two weeks go by, and it dies in the middle of a road trip, takes it to an authorized merc mechanic, and they hook it to the computer, tell him he needs a new fuel system, new pumps, new fuel pipes, harness, the computer, etc bout $4000...he tells them he just did that! they say its needed.
I tell him to go home, take of the back seat, and check the pump connections and pipes and etc himself before he spends anymore cash on this heap of expensive garbage.
he gets it home, finds the pumps, finds a plastic hose connector(you know the type) has come undone, clips it back in, and all is well.
takes it back to the shop and asked them what the hell? you didn't even check anything, do you just charge people after hooking a computer up or what?
they look dumbfounded at him and mumble some bullshit excuses.
two weeks later his power steering blows while hes parking up to help a friend move house, and dumps all its expensive fluid all over the drive way.
a bloody O-ring split on the high pressure side cause unlike everyone else who uses a banjo-bolt and copper washers, merc had to be different.
The make badly designed shit boxes with untested or half arsed systems, and try to pass them off as superior engineering.
if you're going to make a O-Ring sealed hydraulic system, you better make sure you get the clearances correct, and have a decent hold down.

What a wonderful world of automotive awards! The spare parts award in particular reminded me of when working in a spare parts shop (Fiat, Alfa and Lancier) we kept an Alfa front brake calliper under the front counter. It was there for the reasonably common event - a customer wanted the O-rings for the hand brake arm on the brake calliper. They had removed and fixed it all up, but just needed the O-rings. Even experienced mechanics fell for this request.
As the part was not supplied by Alfa- indeed as a 'safety' measure - they were advised they had to purchase a new calliper. Yes, all for a 10 cent part you can buy by the box load from an O-ring selling shop! the standard response was to reach under the counter, pull out the calliper and give it to them and say, 'there ya go mate!'.
Later, after CPR, and a stiff drink, the official reasoning was given. We even loaned them the phone to call the customer to explain why it was buy the calliper or drive home a-la Fred Flintstone... At least it wasn't the rear silencer. Those came with the exhaust manifold and all the bits in between!

That's why 'Straya having a long-range submarine capability is important. If the sea lanes are shut down by an enemy, 'Straya will starve and run out of resources to defend itself. See also WWI and WWII Britain, when German ships and subs almost shut down the sea lanes. Diesel-powered coastal-type subs won't handle the job against modern nuclear-powered subs and ships. But the facts are the 'Straya needs a strategic reserves program based at home.

All that's happened since 2000 is to keep adding more body cladding and pseudo aero shapes, and lets not forget the continual load of electronic crap all claimed for "your safety" that will fail, usually most do sooner than later. You only have to look at the current crop of colours and designs being offered to know a group of bottom feeders are making decisions. When the standards are constantly being lowered, people will feel vindicated by the smallest glimmer of light being thrown at them and accept it as a good thing.

John, do you think the BCOTY award ever meant anything good/positive, and if so, when do you reckon it all went to crap? Reason I ask, is I bought a BCOTY back in the late 80's (R31 Skyline), and still have it as a daily drive ~ IMHO it sort of deserved the award, but now-a-days it seems a tough ask to find a worthy recipient...at all.

John i haven't enjoyed a report on u tube for so long,so thanks for that. It comes as a relief to realise that Australia is run as well as we are here in NZ. We have all heard the pithy old saying of " if you pay peanuts you get Monkeys "but that's not the western world's problem it's we are paying gold bars and still getting Monkeys so that's nice.

Nice summary John ..... I have just been catching up on the share value of EV'S and people like Warren Buffet. The general term being used is the legacy car manufacturers example GM and Ford and the new EV manufacturers like Tesla and the Chinese BYD. The business model thinking of legacy car manufacturers is not keeping pace with with the technology push of the new EV manufacturing companies. A changing of the guard do to speak. My automotive needs would be amply served by an EV. Range is not a problem, neither is performance but charging, cost particularly the long term intrinsic durabilty of the battery is and is of greater importance than range. I don't mean warranty promises by manufacturers. It EV'S seem to a juggernaut starting to roll and Australia will somehow have to cope?

Having met Rob Stokes professionally as part of his role when holding a previous portfolio, I found him to be the politician’s politician. I approached to to let him know that NSW was no longer training teachers to teach the HSC subject Engineering Studies. His reply rubbing his chin was, “I was unaware of this”. Two weeks earlier to this conversation the president of my professional association has told him the exact same thing in a one on one meeting. It even been minuted!! Please John, M.A.L.S. an during arseholes like this to account for their inability to act like politicians and more like vote counter. Lloyd
