  • Today, I will go over what exactly is a cascade bonsai and how you can easily create your own. I will work on a small one and a big one so you can follow along no matter where you are in your bonsai journey. To increase ramification to create a beautiful cascade bonsai with twists and turns, I introduce to you the "Poodling Method." This method involves "poodling," or creating pads, out of the existing foliage. At the same time, you will be increase ramification, removing redundant foliage, and thickening the trunk and branches.

I’ve said it before, but I know comments help you, and because it helps me with my trees
I very much appreciate your humble approach. You’re taking things from a “perfection” and intimidating hobby, to a “it’s ok if you mess up”

That was a tough trip...HIlly roads were not paved!
I was a lot younger so did not matter.
It could make me cry when I see people crawled miles on their belly to pay respect in the temple!
Makes me want to be a better man!

Thank you for the explanations of how you achieve the look you want the cascade trees to look in the future Milton , poodling seems to work for you that’s what matters, if people want to criticise your methods that’s their prerogative. I do like the Elm design which will look great in the future when the foliage pads fill out. I have been working on a very large yamadory Larch which when I finished it did look similar to the way you work, it looks quite bare but now you can see the trunk and branches which were hidden with foliage after I finished but I know how it will look in the future. Sorry I couldn’t receive the tree I won as shipping to the U.K. is not allowed.

Ask me for something you can't readily get and I can ship./hopefully not too heavy...I will do my bedsgt to make it up to you.
Englosh likes gardening...so you have a lot of old material to work with.

Yes good video. I lived in Flagstaff Az for a few years. I came across many natural cascading trees there. There were a lot along road cutouts and along I 40. But your not spouses to dig them up. I have about 150 trees bushes and even some plants that are considered weeds. It can be tough to get to them all as I would like. I really don’t like to buy ready made bonsai I enjoy the process as time passes and they naturally move from production their bonsai pots. I still have an issue with designing junipers. I see the beauty but how to get it there becomes the issue. Have a great day.

It's great that you see the beauty in it! You just need practice! Don't be afraid to make drastic cuts to fulfill your bonsai vision. Please feel free to comment any questions you have.

That prostrata cascade could use 3-5 years of unchecked growth and regular fertilizing/watering to help it regain strength. The constant cutting back of foliage on a weakened tree will only weaken it further, hence the dead branching and yellowing foliage. Best of luck.

The tree is healthy and growing nicely now. I diid cut back a lot and going with the assumption of keeping it dry...It has recovered much since I use most moist planting mix.
Let me show you what happens every three to six month.
Yu may be surprised how much growth it will to fill out.
      🙂

I have 2 blue rug juniper cascade, they need a bit of work. I assume now is a safe time to prune them ?

You can prune junipers at any time of the year…just leave some needles to enable growth
