Does the cake board in the middle have to be the same diameter of the cake or can it be a bit smaller? (I’m making a 8-inch double barrel cake but I have 6-inch boards)

Did you use the wood dowel rod? I see it on the table but didn't see you put it through the cake.

I usually use 1-inch smaller than the cake size!
