Great mix of all three guitar players,Hughie does Steve Gaines parts great,Ricky always tributes Allen nicely, too bad Ricky's mix is hidden,at least on my end. I love this live version other than Ricky not making the mix.
@@jeffbuckley4453 to be fair the song was so new Steve didn't play the same part most performances or at least from the surviving remaining shows but yes they simplified it a bit
Sometimes things click on stage. This version just had something special…They could play it a thousand times in a thousand different places but this one….It was magic.
I totally agree that this very version is one of the best ever played. They sound very firm and JVZ vocal is very close to Ronnie's. My all-time favourite one
Saw the 1st Tribute tour in 87 in Jersey .. I recall seeing empty seats behind the stage . Me and my girl at the time walked right back there .. watched them play this song til they kicked us out. Would have stayed there all night ,lol. Billy was right there too ..
If there was anyone who could fill in for Collins and Gains it would be Hugie Thommason (Outlaws) and Medlock (Blackfoot). At 5:03 it is nearly the same as the original!
@@MrDannyboyhall the version floating around with Steve on vocals from the sound check comes pretty close - Steve sounds very much like Warren Hayes covering this song
This is the best line up or the post crash Skynyrd. They put out some great albums Thommason left. edge of forever, Twenty, Vicious Cycle...all magnificent albums...
All those who are saying this is a tribute band this isn't a tribute band. This is Robbie Van Zandt's younger brother keeping the band alive after the plane crash. This is the Lynyrd Skynyrd just not the same members because ummm they died in a plane crash.
True to Southern rock when I first started getting into Skynyrd in high school my good friend and bass teacher said he knew Hughie from way back through Chris Hicks of Marshall Tucker - since then both Hughie and my bass teacher have passed away far too young though I'm glad to see Chris is still rockin
You have Billy Powell, Gary Rossington, Leon Wilkerson, and Ricky Medlocke in this video. That’s four pre-crash members plus Ronnie’s little brother Johnny.
This song is to me the greatest song ever recorded, bar none....................however this tribute bands greatest album is '1991' it just did'nt get proper airplay except 'smokestack lightning' but just check out 'it's a killer', 'good thing', 'i've had enough', 'keeping the faith', money man' and the rest of this album, my guess is you will agree.
This is a great song and yes it was inspired by Gary's car accident when he hit a tree. The original lead singer of the band is Ronnie not Robbie. Whoever wants to say Johnny is trying to make money off of his dead brother, that is so not true. Johnny wasn't so sure about joining the band and he talked to his parents and a few people from the band about it. Don't believe me, look up Behind the music of this band.
@mattyboyovadanet Partially...Gary certsinly inspired the opening lines, and the "Prince Charming" bit....I think Allen was having issues with alcohol and coke at the time as well, at a time when Ronnie was trying to clean the bnd up a bit. Still a killer tune that's stood the test of time!
its all about TONE and Skynyrd's is unmistakeable. The tones of their guitars are such quality and their riffs are classic. They said Freebird's solo started at 2 minutes originally, grew to 4, blossomed to 8 and maxed at 20. First heard them as a sophomore in high school in 1977 and loved them immediately. They already had Freebird and nearly every record company rejected them. DOUGH!!!!!!
Steve Gaines parts seem straight forward, but his feel, phrasing, and tone were the best. I have been obsessing over his solos in this song. His first solo in the song around 54 seconds in the studio recording is the hardest to nail in the beginning section. The pull off section in the first solo is reasonable to play as is the second solo he takes around 2:21
They will never be a better trio of guitar players then Gary ,Steve gaines and allen collins was.ed king was a great guitarists for skynyrd in there early years
@@bluemooncollision There isn't too many videos out there with Steve Gaines playing live, but Steve didn't even nail his own parts as in the recording very well in my opinion ... So Hughie and Ed King when he rejoined the band did a pretty good tribute, in their own styles of course.
@@scottydog62 I would agree with you on him not being 100% from the live stuff I have heard. He was ultimately just on another level than anyone in this band as a musician. His vocals on some of his original songs and his solos really standout. I don't mean to knock the other guys, but they had to try to fill his shoes which is impossible. It is a good tribute nonetheless.
No Offense - I LOVE this version of Skynyrd- ONLY Ronnie could feel the stage BURN. Allen-Ronnie-Gary- Leon-Artimus- Billie. Please dont get me wrong- its true. I love Hughie-Rickey- oh God dont we all. Just sayin...........
If I closed my eyes....I'd swear it was Jimbo with Southpaw. Awesome band out if Bossier City, back in the 70s, and early 80s. They really did this tune justice. It ain't Ronnie, but close enough. What're ya gonna do??!
All that's left after the plane crash of 1977. The younger brother of the frontman that perished in the plane crash Looks just like the older brother SAME BAND!!! Sounds just the same Like the plane crash never happened GENIUS!!!
Such a differrence from Free Bird : to ,That Smell ,think these Guys were. as good as Allman Bros. By time of this ,record ,Two Geatest Anti Drug Songs ,(and there are Several ) are ," ,Kicks ",by the Raiders ,and "That Smell "

I get so sick of people saying this isn't the real Skynyrd. And you are correct in everything you say. Everytime you click on a Skynyrd song performed by the new band, you just know you are going to see these comments. You cannot change their minds. Oh well , their loss. I will take what I can get.
you can say what you will about free bird. though the guitat work in that smell is without a doubt some of the finest guitar playing of all time...
Yes this is a masterpiece
One of the best actually….. if not the BEST
Great mix of all three guitar players,Hughie does Steve Gaines parts great,Ricky always tributes Allen nicely, too bad Ricky's mix is hidden,at least on my end.

Free Bird is beyond legendary and deserves its place but I'm recently realizing this is a better song...
Agreed 100%. That Smell is one of the greatest guitar songs in history. Very underrated tune
The finest southern rock you can ever find, this is the real deal, folks!!!
This is close enough for me folks...the best live version of this song Indeed !
indeed its not...they skipped steve gaines solo, because no one knew how to play it!!

LYNYRD SKYNYRD NEVER SMELLED SO GOOD !
one of the best lead guitar songs ever!!!
what feeling in there playing, from the soul!!
A shiver up my backbone.....that guitar solo!!!!
My favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd song

This actually is my favorite version of this song
Love leons bass line in this song
This is close enough for me ! And this is an excellent version of this great song.
Gee, miss seeing Leon up there! He added so much to the original sound. The quiet rocker. 💕
Still can't believe Leon and Hughie are gone.
I liked this line up. Great share my friend:)
Lynyrd Skynyrd the band that rock southern rock oh hell yeah yes sir!!
Best line up since prior to the crash. Hughey is a great player. I got to work with and see this line up a couple of times.

Rickey was with Skynyrd from 70-72 as a drummer
The rule of three says Let It Be
This is probably the best live version of this song out there.
check this one out. Lynyrd Skynyrd - That Smell - 7/13/1977 - Convention Hall (Official)
I was at this show, Starlake Amphitheater in Burgettstown, PA. Another great show I will never forget, wow that was 22 years ago!

Joel Durham best version by miles

No way, the 87/88 line up was by far the best. Should of ended after that

Thanks to the great Hughie Thomasson, this song by this lineup isn't as bad as I thought It would be.
We miss Hughie...

My Favorite Skynard tune.
Loved this tune from the get-go. Recall thinking it was in a different league upon first listen. Still is, too.

5:30 what a guitar duet!! wow
This is a great tribute band.
Leon held his bass almost straight up & down because of nerve damage from the plane crash
Was wondering about that posture...he's unbeatable in this lineup you can tell his replacements don't play the full part
wasnt this song about gary crashing into an oak tree?
