This is my favorite LS song! I decided to get rid of "That Smell" 1/2/2015. Free and clean from heroin for 7 years and haven't looked back!
Congrats. 5 years sober here
@@unclemeat7310 That's what's up! Congrats!
That’s awesome! Congratulations!
Congrats to you.I've been clean 7 years now
👏👏👏👏 My fav is "I Know a Little"
“The smell of death surrounds you.” We love watching young people discover the music we grew upon!
I remember when this came out. Somewhat controversial with the old folks who felt it was promoting drug use. That’s not the case at all. As you said, it’s nice to see young people listen to what we liked and seeing them enjoy it.
@@stevedavis5704 You are exactly right and if anyone pays any attention to Skynyrds songs they've never promoted drugs or violence .
Yes !! So much great music to discover !! Love you two !! Your reactions are great !!
Yeah, seams a whole new generation is discovering the greatness of Skynyrd
RVZ wrote songs that will last forever. "For the Common People" ~RVZ
“the smell of death surrounds you” this song for the guitarist who got drunk and crashed his truck into a oak tree... true story not a metaphor
Yep Gary Rossington hell of a guitar player
It was his Ford Torino not a truck
Only it was a car....but yes. All true. Ronnie wrote about what he knew
Yes this was an intervention song for Gary
Ronnie had really cleaned up his act at the end and was training with weights even
This song is about their guitarist Gary Rossington who bought a new car got drunk and hit a tree. They were supposed to go on tour a few days later but his injuries held all of that up. The band was kind of pissed at him because his drinking and drugs were getting out of hand. The smell of death surrounds you
Strangely he is the last living survivor of the original members
After the plane crash, and his slow recovery, Gary spent more and more time here in Sheffild, Alabama. Shefield had always been their home-away -FROM HOME And as Ed king said, The Shoals was a better place to work than new york or LA. Gary Cut several albums as hishealth got better and he would be sited once in a while in the Shoals Area.
Yeah , hence , " Oak tree here in my way " .
He must have taken that lesson to heart, considering he was the last of the original members to pass away.
The cover of this album gives me goosebumps... That was their last album before the plane crash...
It was also pulled off the shelves shortly after the crash, couldn't find a copy unless you already owned the original...I did...Rock ON!!
Thats right , it was changed out of respect for the deceased and a request of Teresa Gaines, Steve Gaines wife, the original cover of "Street Survivors” was a photograph of the band standing in flames. Eerily, Steve Gaines' (in the middle) eyes were closed and his head appears to be engulfed in the flames.
I have the original cover with the flames and I bought it in Greece!
They reissued that cover without the flames after the first run. It was wild to hear the news back then.
got the flame edition hanging up in my bedroom though now I really want to track down the rerelease
"The smell of death surrounds you" is the lyric. Take care...
Their guitar players were SO under-rated and unsung....they kicked some serious butt in many songs!
Best “ group” of guitar players ever assembled in one band. Tremendous!!!
I’ve always liked this song because of the message. The best “just say no” message ever created.
Wife here...Growing up hearing Skynard all my life.., I always felt this song was quiet a warning about the dark side of drugs and alcohol..That was a truly powerful message for me..LOVE YOUR INSIGHT!
One of the most underrated songs in music.
The Guitar Work in this Song Is Sublime. "I Know A Little" has the most infectious Guitar Licks, in a short LS Song.
That 3 guitar army was strong!
Also, Poison robbed the shit out of the guitar hook from "I Know A Little" for "Unskinny Bop." Just when I thought I couldn't hate them more, LOL.
One of My All Time Favorites!! They need to play it more!!
This song is a monster. Even though I’ve heard it so many times, it still gives me goosebumps 🔥
the band was really coming into their own, so sad it all ended the way it did, they were really progressing as a band and the skill level was off the charts..
It's crazy that it's as if it couldn't have really happened any other way. Absolute legends. It's amazing the musicians they were able to put together to keep a shadow if ot going but that original group is just legendary.
My absolute favorite LS song. The back up singers are killing it.
Honkett , Jo JO bILLINGSLY was laid to rest in nearby Cullman Alabama which is hit by tornados SO often. Hopefully she is resting in peace.
"That Smell" and "The Needle and The Spoon" were both 70's interventions written as warnings by Ronnie and done Skynyrd style!!
Both songs have intricate guitar playing 🎸
Great song. Let's give a shoutout to the Honkettes. Best background singers ever. Cassie Gaines, Jojo Billingsley, Leslie Hawkins. Rest in Peace ladies.
Leslie's still alive.
@@jillybean3688 Serious? I thought they were all gone. Glad to be wrong.
@@curiousman1672 she had bad injuries in the crash. Had to have facial reconstruction etc. But yes fortunately she is still with us.
Loved the Honkettes. Thought Leslie Hawkins was HAWT! RIP to those lost in the crash & praying Leslie found peace afterward.
For the record, Jojo wasn't on the plane either. She was in the hospital for substance abuse. She became a born again Christian after the incident, but later passed from cancer.
Lynyrd Skynyrd (1973-1977)is the greatest rock band to ever do it!
Such a great song/story. Saw them at Anaheim Stadium, late September 1977. Just weeks before their plane went down. What a loss to the music world.
All of the Honketts are gone now with the exception of of the Wonderful Leslie Hawkins! Muscle Shoals Still loves you, Leslie!! Rest in peace Cassie Gains and Jo jo Billingsley. They were a very tallented group and they always appeared to be ready to Rock!
i posted a picture of the band with the honkettts relaxing in Sheffield Alabama, with the world famous Swampers before going to Enland and blowing the Stones off the stage! The picture can be seen on youTube along with the great Skynryd song, One more time! it wasn't the first encounter between Americans and British. in 1969, The Stones slipped into tiny Sheffild, Alabama to record a few decent songs. one was you Gotta move and a couple of obscure songs called Wild horses and Brown Sugar. Then they quietly slipped out of thown because they were here illegally. People from all over the world come here to FAME StudioS in Muscle Shoals and Muscle Shoals Sound Studios in Sheffield Alabama. Both studios are active again and are also museums. Watch the Briliant movie, MUSCLE SHOALS AND YOU WILL BE HOOKED JUST LIKE THE RST OF US! Then visit the Studios. Its two small towns so they are easy to find.
August 27th 1977 with Ted Nugent and others. I was there.
This was the stuff I grew up with in Garden Grove, Ca in the 70's. Grove high!! 🖐 it was all fresh music then. It's still fresh.. Glad to see your vid while smoking a hooter, it was cool. I'll have to check out more.. 🚀💥👍
Since before I was 8 years old in 1973 and to this day, Lynyrd Skynyrd is one of my favorite bands ever!
"The smell of death surrounds you"
This song is a damn JAM!!!!!!!! Can you imagine seeing this live?!
Rock bands, partying and addiction……these guys wrote about what they saw, did….no holding back. ❤️🎼❤️😎🔥
“Four Walls of Raiford” and “Ballard of Curtis Lowe” and “Gimme Three Steps” are some of my favorites!
Four walls of raiford is my favorite skynyrd song
Steve Gaines played the beginning of the main guitar solo. He was such a great guitar player. Their plane crashed 3 days after this Album Soul Survivors was released. RIP to all the members. very sad day in music history.
Street Survivor is the name of the album

I. Remember when I spent my last 10 dollars on this album, I had 2 homeless Vitinam vets staying with me, willing and earl, bad ass Mf, we listened the album all night, party with Quludes, Whiskey,
"Street Survivors" actually...
Watching people learn why Skynyrd is so iconic is ...hell I can't even describe it...🥰
That guitar work on this song is legendary! All 4 of Skynyrd's featured guitarist King, Collins, Rossington, and Gaines are so underrated!
Only three. Ed King left two years before this.
"The Smell of Death that surrounds you," is the key theme to this song." Pick yo poisons wisely my shaman," mentor said to me ....... "and make sure you have the remedies for that poison you are putting into your body." Free Bird and That Smell" are my top favorites from Lynard Skynard......who are among the gods of Rock n' Roll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Saw these guys live twice. Both times this song got standing ovations. Duelling guitars at the end actually better than the record both times. Incredible concert band.
Saw them twice too 1976, & 1977 I was 17.
They’re best known for, “Free Bird” and “Sweet Home Alabama”. I personally like “Simple Man” and “The Ballad of Curtis Loew” most. “Gimme Three Steps”, “Call Me The Breeze”, “Saturday Night Special” , “Swamp Music” are fun as well. Southern Rock superstars!
Way to go with the deep cuts. Nobody would've thought to suggest all their hits and singles.
@@FURTHER_ADO Of course there are plenty more, but that’s a few of my faves 😉☮️💟
My ex,children's father, lived in the Gaines home in Orange Park, near Green Cove Springs with Bud Gaines. (Cassie,Steve 2 of the airplane crash victims' father)I didn't realize the legends L.Skynyrd were to music as I was about 6 when the plane crashed.Wish I'd taken photos and talked a bit more to family members when bringing my children to visit their father. Only later did I begin listening and deep diving the L.S. catalog. Even met Lacy VanZant,Ronnie,Donnie, and Johnny's father. He was super nice, looked like a large Southern Santa Claus,white-bearded farmer, rural type, much older man.The people I met were extremely kind people, unpretentious, with a palpable air of tragedy, deep pain about them, in hindsight. Considering all the loss, not sure how they were even upright tbh
3 incredible guitar solos in 1 song that reached its apex with the great Alan Collins
Born right here in Jacksonville "Duvalllll" makes me so proud to see Asia vibing with our sound. Thank you for doing Skynyrd right
From Jacksonville Florida home of Lynyrd Skynyrd. 66 y/o I watched their rise & fall. So sad. They would have been so good.
Skynard, Steely Dan, Bob Seger. Today's reactions are the best you have ever done.
You should check out, "Tuesdays gone" and "stay"!
That album cover from Street Survivors where the band is going up in flames was pulled from the market when they crashed that plane carrying so much of the band back in 1977. If you have a pristine copy of that first release it is worth a few bucks! I had it back in the day but I wore that LP out, and the cover, too. Probably their most accomplished album. Those guitars are hard to beat! 🎸🎸🎸
They was singing the smell of death that surrounds you. Greatest songs list 😊
One of their best! Check out "Coming Home" by them.
With this band nothing else was expected but greatness and to me this song shows it. My favorite song of Theirs, which shows the depth of their grittiness and the heart of their legend. It has all of this and more. I agree with BJ.. Thanks for sharing the reaction..
Your playing some awesome music. Thanks
They did this song after one of the band members had bought a new car and promptly crashed into an oak tree because he was drunk and high. The opening line, whiskey bottles brand new car oak tree you're in my way, was supposed to let him know....hey this song is about you. Straighten your ass up.
Gary Rossington. As of today he’s the only one in the band still alive. Hhmmmm
The only original member left and only 1 of 3 still alive that survived the plane crash
So much emotion in this song, from the lyrics to the facemelting guitar solos. This what good music sounds like
Ya'll need to watch the documentary "If I Leave Here Tomorrow" It is the BEST one I have seen about Lynyrd Skynyrd.....
Speaking from experience, addiction is a bitch, and she takes no prisoners, clean and sober for now for over 20 years, one of LS best songs !
It's insane that the frontman wrote it as a warning to his bandmate to not lose himself to drugs or he'd die, and in a few days, the frontman, and several others were killed in the plane crash.
My favorite band. Saw them in concert, the original line-up, several times. If I could only have one band on my playlist it would be Lynyrd Skynyrd and I would be satisfied.
That thumbnail picture with them with the flames was the original issue of the record album on the front cover. This album was recorded shortly before the plane crash and once that happens, they retracted this one and released wine without the flames in it and that's the one that is most common to find. It's a powerful song and it's musically incredible of course and they have so many songs. Even among their hits there are so many songs but then there are a lot more on albums that are just amazing.
Not just great musicians, but great writers and arrangers, those dueling guitars and let's not forget Billy Powell on the keys. Those first five albums came at you without a rest.
Gary Rossington, Allen Collins and Steve Gaines on guitars. Like his predecessor, Ed King, Steve Gaines was phenomenally gifted. A huge loss.
Hey y'all. " the smell of death surrounds you". I might be mistaken but i think has to do with the smell of an auto accident.....the gas....alcohol....blood etc. Their guitarist ran into an oaktree while dui. Hence the inspiration for the song. Rather tragic that a short time later the band was involved in a tragic plane accident
“The Needle and The Spoon” is a must listen Skynrd experience as well. From one southern man of the era to the band, THANK YOU and RIP boys. You pushed this gun nut a little with “Saturday Night Special”, but some folks needed to listen then and still do. Great song. And then there is “Ballad of Curtis Lowe”. THANK YOU. Loved y’all in Little Rock. You blew the top off Barton Coliseum ! Remember the tall dude, with long “hair colored yellow”, standing like a statue on stage wearing cowboy boots, cowboy hat and nothing else?! Nekkid! Free as a Bird. Thanks for keeping SECURITY off his bare ass and letting him have his moment in the spotlight. He gifted all of us an epic experience and memory as well . Really hope he listened to what y’all were trying to tell us all with your songs. If not, RIP to him and all our brothers and sisters who never were able to get that monkey off their backs….. Those of us lucky enough to still be here miss all of y’all. You deserved better. You and the band. If you run into my old neighbor, Sweet Connie Hamsy up there, tell her Jeff says hello. We miss her too. She was sunshine on all of us. RIP
one of the best bass players ever
There's a live performance of this song done in a small club, right before the plane crash
Glad y'all dig this! 1 month after this album release was their plane crash. They had alot of great songs, but this has always been my favorite.
Al Kooper, the Forrest Gump of Rock n Roll, said they were the best composers and arrangers of any band he ever heard or worked with.
He asked them how they learned to do counterpoint with their 3 guitars and they said, "What's that?"
They are tight, melodic, often with 2 guitar leads going off at once.
He was actually at a crash site of Allen Collins or Gary rossington where they had wrecked their car. The smell of spilled whiskey is what he's talking about
That album cover was recalled as it came out real close to the plane crash. It was released without the flames
Yes, I had one of the originals before they pulled them off the shelves
Can never go wrong with Lynyrd Skynyrd. Great Southern Rock.
We listen to this cd over and when we were teenagers riding around ♥️
We listened to this 8 track over and over when we were teenagers riding around!
Dcummmings 🤣🤣I was teenager in the 80s you must've been teenager in the 70 s 🤣♥️
@@jennyboo9604 yep!
I'm sooo glad to see that Asia has found Lynyrd Skynyrd. You will love this band forvever now. They have so much mystique to.their music. It's a pleasure to listen to them and then learn about them. You keep doing what your doing because you're doing s great job!!
"the smell of death that surrounds you."
Nobody does southern rock better than Lynyrd. One of a kind. Power of life in Van Zandt and those guitars.
These guys were true masters of their instruments. 🎸🎸🎸🎤
I honestly get choked up when I hear this song because I lived those days luckily I survived I had a lot of friends that died horrible deaths because of drugs and then someone else would not learn a lesson from it and they'd be dead too it's pretty sad folks it's a memory that you don't like to relive too often but you have to face reality either way I love Lynyrd Skynyrd God rest his soul
One of my favorite Skynyrd songs! Great and meaningful song.
GREAT ANALOGY PERFECT
Y’all are one of the best if not the best reactions people I’ve watched. Awesome job really. I look forward to watching y’all
According to a book I read about Skynyrd, Prince charming was what Ronnie Vanzant called Gary Rossington. Gary Rossington and Allen Collins were both involved in separate vehicle crashes around the same time frame and that's what inspired this song.
You both hit the nail on the head !! I played in a southern rock band for three yrs with Fam and Friends band.. thanks for this song,we lost a lead guitarist, last night Eddy Spunkey Spanstra ! R I P
Lynyrd Skynyrd is in my opinion one of the best southern rock bands out there. Followed by blackfoot, 38 special, molly hatchet, axe all from Jacksonville Florida and the outlaws from Tampa.
Could you do, "Give me 3 steps", and "they call me the breeze"? Good review guys.
This album was huge! Quintessential Southern Rock!
Ronnie could write like a poet and sing like a beast. Truly an icon.
There was a point where both guitarists, Allan and Gary, were smashing up cars and themselves. Ronnie wrote this song as a wakeup call for friend and bandmember/guitarist Gary Rossington, who, ironically, ended up being the last surviving member of Skynyrd, playing Skynyrd, in Skynyrd. My favorite Skynyrd guitarist/melody maker, however, was Ken King, who's creative partnership with Ronnie spawned their earlier hits. Ken King recently passed. R.I.P. Ken.
A wicked wicked guitar arrangement. Three guitars + madness. Guitarist Gary Rossington was the subject of this song. Gary heard the ‘smell of death’ message from Ronnie through this song and lived a very long life. He owes that to Ronnie.
He’s saying, The smell of death surrounds you.
my Lord.... those solos are still freaking EPIC! love this song, one of their best along with "free bird"
Asia nailed it! That's exactly what the song is about. A metaphor. Well done
Y’all have just witnessed the best rock band that ever stepped on stage I mean you can make a list of songs from this band and close your eyes and put your finger on one and I bet you will like it These boys new how to get down Everyone reacts to the same three or four songs No one reacts to their best songs Like Every Mother’s Son,I Never Dreamed,Am I Losing Once Again,All I Can Do Is Write It in a song, coming Home, down South Jukin,Searching,Traveling Man, and so many more it’s almost unbelievable how good this band really was
"The smell of "Death" surrounds you" is the lyric...
Lynyrd Skynyrd - That Smell (original version) Lyrics
Artist: Lynyrd Skynyrd
Album: Street Survivors
Heyo! SONGLYRICS just got interactive. Highlight. Review: RIFF-it.
RIFF-it good.
Whiskey bottles and brand new cars
Oak tree you're in my way
There's too much coke and too much smoke
Look what's going on inside you
Ooh, that smell
Can't you smell that smell?
Ooh, that smell
The smell of death surrounds you
Angel of darkness is upon you
Stuck a needle in your arm (You fool, you)
So take another toke, have a blow for your nose,
One more drink fool, would drown you (Hell, yeah)
Ooh, that smell
Can't you smell that smell?
Ooh, that smell
The smell of death surrounds you
Now they call you Prince Charming
Can't speak a word when you're full of 'ludes.
Say you'll be alright come tomorrow
But tomorrow might not be here for you (Yeah, you)
Ooh, that smell
Can't you smell that smell?
Ooh, that smell
The smell of death surrounds you
Aw, you fool, you.
You stick them needles in your arm
I know I been there before
One little problem that confronts you
Got a monkey on your back
Just one more fix Lord, might do the trick
One hell of a price for you to get your kicks (Hell, yeah)
Ooh, that smell
Can't you smell that smell?
Ooh, that smell
The smell of death surrounds you
Ooh, that smell
Can't you smell that smell?
Ooh, that smell
The smell of death surrounds you
Oh, you fool, you
Don't stick those needles in your arm.
You're just a fool, just a fool, just a fool.
Anyone who has had someone die in front of them is familiar with that smell . It is as real as it gets.
Love it! Happy birthday BJ
Thank you!!
My favorite Skynyrd song. Love the guitar work in this one.
Good read on the meaning behind the song. I enjoy and love your reactions, thanks for sharing them with us.
Lynyrd Skynyrd never leaves you short of rythem and soul !
You guys have got to listen to "you got that right" from the same album . Great listening
That Smell! Hands down! I was in my early 20’s when the album come out, and I was a player then , great job, to much money from a young dummy, fast cars, girls plenty, hanging out by the ocean, when I wasn’t working, Southern Californication” I knew what the lyrics meant first time I heard it! Blasting out of my custom pioneer Am/FM cassette radio with supper power Jenson speakers with the tweeters, cruising PCH Blvd. hittin refer and six pack tall can Buds on the passenger side floor one between my legs. Working on a night move” Never thought I see 35 let alone live to be 66 now! Thank God! I’m still alive! Jesus Saved Me, Hallelujah” Unfortunately some didn’t make it,😢 I wasn’t gangster, and I wasn’t rich, grew up in a middle-class neighborhood“ started work before I was 13 and worked up until when I retired, what a ride it’s been:
Really enjoyed watching you and hearing this song again! Your analysis and interjections were spot on! I will definitely subscribe and keep following you” keep up the good work! And may God grant you success and continued love:”
Peace out✌🏻
So many great Skynyrd songs, one of my favorites is Double Trouble
Seen them live in recent years. Outstanding! Even now they are so musically tight complete with turn taking on multiple wailing guitars, prominent keyboards and quality backup vocalists. Highly recommended legends.
Another fact, the album cover your showing is the original with the flames. There plane crashed right after the album release and the family had it redone without the flames out of respect for those that were lost :(
Check out the Rossington Collins Band .... they formed after the plane crash with the members that survived .....The Rossington Collins Band was an American southern rock band founded in 1979 by guitarists Gary Rossington and Allen Collins following the 1977 plane crash which killed three members of Lynyrd Skynyrd, of which both had been members.[1] The band included two other surviving members of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Billy Powell and Leon Wilkeson. The band wished to develop their own sound rather than being regarded as a reformed Lynyrd Skynyrd, and toward that objective they hired a female lead vocalist, Dale Krantz, who later married Rossington.[2] The Jacksonville-based band released two albums before disbanding in 1982.[1] Their biggest hit, "Don't Misunderstand Me," charted in late 1980.[3] .....Following the crash of the Skynyrd plane in October 1977, chances for a reunion looked slim. Allen Collins had severe injuries to his arm that almost made it necessary for the arm to be amputated. Leon Wilkeson had suffered internal injuries that initially made doctors declare him dead at the scene of the crash, only to be resuscitated later.[4] He also had a badly broken arm. Gary Rossington had also suffered severe injuries in the crash. Only Artimus Pyle (former Lynyrd Skynyrd drummer) and Billy Powell were in good enough condition to be released from the hospital within two weeks of the crash.
70’s Lynyrd Skynyrd Band. The greatest Southern Rock Band.
Love y'all back! Merry Christmas!!
Best LS song! This was an autobiographical song. They lived this song down to the details!
Thank you. You folk are so beautiful
Amazing band. Epic song… Great reaction. Thank y’all so much for doing this!
Keep the Skynryd reactions coming…
Lynyrd Skynyrd also sang an anti Gun song called "Saturday Night Special"
You can see the exact moment the meaning of the song hits her. You can see it on her face. This song is amazing
I grew up on this band and Southern Rock.
“Just one more fix might do the trick. One hell of way for you to get your kicks.” That’s such a good line. Also, he says, “the smell of death surrounds you.”
If you haven’t done it yet, y’all need to react to Lynyrd Skynyrd - Gimmie Three Steps. It’s a true story, and kind of funny. 😂
It's "One hell of a price for you to get your kicks". Hell Yeah!
“Can’t speak a word when you’re full of Luke’s”😎

This was back when there was no CD or MP3 players. Barely into "Cassetville" too. I'm old enough to remember 8-track players. The coolest is when you had one in a car. Otherwise, all you had was the radio, and many songs from Skynyrd would be played religiously. They even played the entire version of Freebird (about 11 minutes long) and today, you would never hear that. Too many commercials to cram in every single minute. The vinyl days were more romantic, and it was a thrill to be a kid and buy a record album and see the images on the covers, etc., and read a little about the artist. You felt more connected to them. I had this whole album and hundreds of others. Something more personal and sincere about the experience.
