    Definitely agree, the album was a bit too much of a behemoth and would definitely benefit from less songs, but there were some gems in there. My personal favourites were Who's Afraid of Little Old Me and Peter!! Also loved your ideas about Narnia being incorporated into it! I really like listening to Taylor's songs without connecting them to her life specifically - I agree we can take away a lot more that way

      But what if it's your favorites that were cut out?
      We have an artists with extensive experience providing her stories to a huge fanbase with varying tastes.
      Streaming allows fans to make their own playlists, so we can pick from the cornucopia of her works to form our interpretation of the perfect TTPD album.

      @@MSerrada1 I see your point, and I'm sure a lot of people like that there's plenty of songs to pick and choose from. But I personally tend to prefer quality over quantity, and if that meant she cut out my personal favorites then that's fine. I think it's just a bit harder to find the gems if you get too bogged down in the number of similar-toned songs. But to each their own.

    i like ur review! i just feel as though ts is at the point in her career where she is able to provide a 31 tracked album for her fans SO they could pick and choose what they like because she wants to fulfill them as much as she can. thats why she includes such a large volume imo. ur critiques are very fair though, despite me loving this album so much and having it on repeat. thank u for such an enlightening perspective and discussion!
    i do agree though i dislike the production on many songs. and yes youre right there are definitely weaker songs on the album.

    I love this review! Definitely disagree with you with certain points but that may be because I can be a biased swiftie. it is quite overwhelming- the number of songs but I guess I saw quite a lot of speculation about it having a longer surprise. So I was ready either way. Def love the second volume more. Honestly pretty tired of the "who is this about?" stuff too. 'How did it end?' in this album made me so sad. It gave me a sense of introspection too about her and maybe even some of my friends. Introspective in both ways: it's pretty relatable, the "empathetic hunger" as she calls it. She's calling everyone out in a way. And the other side: being the subject of gossip anywhere sucks too. The way it ends is quite heartbreaking, sometimes even we don't understand how it ended. "Were there clues I didn't see?" but in a sadder tone. I think this song is a big highlight for me.
    Overall, it's my favourite from her. It reminds me of both Red and Folklore (both my other favs).

    Wow! I'm delighted to see your video in my recommendation feed! I'm a swiftie and the album was kinda a disappointment for me and i was yearning to listen to an objective viewpoint since everyone is just so in love with the record you're not sure if you're the problem. I 100% agree on the song peter, when i listened to it i didnt like it then after couple of listens it has became one of my favorites. I also can't agree more on So high school it's too rushed. Thank you again 💓

      We can sometimes tie ourselves into knots trying to like something because we want to be loyal to an artist, or because everyone else seems (or claims) to like it. This isn't fair to ourselves, or the artist. If an artist is told that everything they do is brilliant they will soon lose persepective, and, I suspect, subsequently lose the capacity to BE brilliant. They won't grow. This doesn't just happen with musical artists. We have a tendency to think, for instance, that because he is Shakespeare or Mozart, everything he does must be fantastic. It isn't. This is certainly not an album that I would add to my permanent play list; partly because it is too long. I have thought of making my own playlist of the songs I like - kind of my own 'edition' of the album - because there are some good tracks on it. I have never done that before.

    I agree that this album is too long. But I feel like those songs poured out of her and she just didn't want to make a cohesive record. For me it's all about the emotions. I'm sure she is aware that some of those songs and just okay but I'm also really happy that she decided to release them all. I love Peter for example and I'm sure it wouldn't make it to the one cohesive album.
    It's a different project for her. She finally let go of all the industry rules and did what she felt was right for her. She said she "needed to make this album" which is what only other artists are able to understand I suppose. She's worked with Jack and Aaron for years now and I feel like they let her do what she wants. As you've said, it seems like there wasn't anyone who would look at the songs with a critic point of view. But is it a bad thing? I think I prefer to have more songs from which I can pick my favourites then to get a shorter cohesive album. But I understand that others might feel different about it. :) Anyway I am happy we got so many good songs

      I agree with you on all the lowlights! Those songs didn't hit me yet but maybe it will change.
      What do you think about the prophecy? For me it's her most vulnerable song. Definitely a career highlight. So mature and painful, so relatable.

      I can certainly see the point that people can choose their own favourites from among these songs. I will probably do the same myself. I guess this just another way in which the delivery of music has changed with the advent of streaming. Thanks for your comments.

    Break up songs (and other negative themes) are just easer to write and usually turn out better because that's when we're forced to be more thoughtful or reflective. Happy songs, by most artists, usually turn out inane or boring or laughable.

    • @philipnewey
      @philipnewey  Місяць тому

      Yeah, I get that about negative themes. In fact, I recently did a video on art and suffering, and said that I prefer sad, dark themes in all kinds of art because, as you say, they take you deeper.

    Narnia or Neverland?

    • @philipnewey
      @philipnewey  Місяць тому +1

      Well, I think both. Peter Pan is obviously Neverland. I'm just suggesting that the line 'in closets like cedar' may reference the wardrobe in the Chronicles of Narnia (with Peter, Susan and the others). It may be a stretch, but I like the idea.

      I just prefer to listen to an album as an album rather than pick and choose tracks. Also, as with writers who decline the use of editors, I think there is a tendency these days for artists just to include everything, which I think dilutes the quality.

    • @MSerrada1
      @MSerrada1 Місяць тому

      @@philipnewey But you don't know that Aaron & Jack are NOT acting as editors.
      You've decided that your specific tastes in songs should be an indication of quality. That's evident in your comments on Jack vs Aaron. It's clear where your preference in production settle, but that's a preference, not a objective fact that Jack's tracks aren't giving exactly what many of us want.
      Again, it's a matter of taste, and too many are presenting that because there's a larger number of songs they don't like--which is numerically to be expected when double the usual tracks--is a sign that a lot should have been cut.

    • @philipnewey
      @philipnewey  Місяць тому +1

      @@MSerrada1 I don't think I implied anywhere that anything I said was other than my own opinion and preference. I think I made that very clear. And if Jack and Aaron were acting as editors, I don't think they did a particularly good job. Note the word 'think' there - it indicates an opinion.
