I like to hit it hard with a slice while not looking in the direction I'm hitting it to. Extremely effective when hitting it to the corners of the field.
Aloha Greg and Jenny, these two returns are my go to returns. Surprisingly most players just lift the returns cross to the rear court. If you can anticipate their predictable return one can easily transition with an offensive smash and gain the upper hand. These returns are worth practicing, mastering them gives you a huge advantage, even if your opponents successfully manage a return it, it can easily be pounced upon. Thanks , you guys are awesome. Take care.
Tried your techniques. I used to hold the racquet a little bit higher. Now made a little adjustment as per your video and is giving excellent results. Keep up the good work. Thanks guys
These are some really exellent tutorial videos you're putting out! There's some great content elsewhere on youtube, but I've not seen it put as concisely, or as helpfully - thanks so much!

Brilliant video once again. It really is my favourite channel now! Really useful tips and so brilliantly explained. Thank you! Just want to get on to the court now, experiment and try it out.... maybe next year when things get back to normal! 😂
Thank you very much 😃Yes uncertain times for sure but the videos are on here forever for you to refer back to! Let's hope things get back to normal soon!!
Thank you guys. These tips were literally a game changer for me last night. These last couple of weeks my return of serve has been really poor, i knew i needed to attack it but i kept fluffing it. After watching your video and implementing your advice my returns were a lot more consistent and it really out our opponent on the back from from the off allowing us to be more dominant with the rally. I’ll admit i still struggled with the flick serve but certainly the short serve i was able to deal with a lot better. Even just the simple things like starting with a bevel grip and leading with your non racquet leg made all the difference!!
This video made a huge difference in my return of service in doubles. I implimented your ideas and on the very first night of playing I am already way more confident in my return of serves and I force a lift more often by my opponents. Thanks again!
Thank you very much! 😄 Yes this video was targeted at a more basic level, and we then did a 2nd video targeting the advanced players: ua-cam.com/video/TKRoEcjAA7U/v-deo.html
Most of the players are right handed. hope that we will see you teaching us the same but with the right-handed person demonstrating in your next video...glad to see that.. thank you so much...!!
Hi, Thanks for the amazing content! Could you please make a video which highlights the next steps after returning the serve: 1) what should be my position at the front once do a net or down the line return? 2) how to setup the 3rd shot? (Serve->Return of serve->3rd shot) 3) what should we do or reply if our opponents do these types serve return? Thanks ☺️
Really like the way you guys do the video's! I use them for the moment as some training for the kids i give trainig to while they are at home during lockdown. For myself I'm an advanced player from Belgium but still wanna learn some more advanced tactics into the mixed doubles for example about the return because its quite different from double. Hope you guys can make a video about it!
Very nice! Maybe a video on returning flick serve some time? This is often where a lot of less-experienced players fail, especially when they are standing very close to the service line when receiving the shuttle.
Hello guys Good day to u I want to comment on every vdo of yours but i cdnt I m really really thankful to you guys to give such knowledge to improve my game skills I have been watching your videos from a long time I try to practice almost every thing u teach in your videos and i have observed very very prominent good change in my game Thank you so much for imparting us with your knowledge Regards ❤❤❤❤

Many thanks (again). Bevel grip - great tip - I never knew that! Just tried it in the lounge with my son and it "feels" right 🙂 always nervous of standing too close to service line because of flick serve, but will try to be braver! Video on returning flick serve would be welcome 👍
You're very welcome Tom and that's great to hear 😃Yes be braver!! It also depends on who you're playing and if they like to flick a lot or not! We've had a few requests for this so will add it to the schedule! Maybe 3 weeks from now 👍
@@BadmintonInsight tried it on court today (in Wales) - really pleased. Standing closer to service line gave me so many more options, and I was ready for the flick serves too which came more frequently. Bevel grip worked well too 🙂 thank you!!
Hi Tom! We've just released a video on how to return the flick serve - here is the link if you want to check it out 😊 ua-cam.com/video/wbjlCuBK6mo/v-deo.html We hope you find it useful!
@@BadmintonInsight thanks guys for the heads-up on the "returning a flick serve" video - will watch with interest later today - I'm sure I'll learn something new, as I do from all your videos 👍
The best return of service is the straight netshot/push and it should basically played always if your opponent allows it. Only after they start countering it effectively should you vary the return - if not, just play that one every time. Your option of pushing past the front player works if they play like you guys in the video where the server stays standing at the T after the service. A more dangerous opponent will have the server follow up to the net to cut off the netshot return, and at that point the rear player is covering the midcourt return. And if you're standing at the T after your service and your opponent returns a straight netshot, you're out of options and you're going to lift.
Thanks for sharing all your knowledge through these wonderful videos. My daughter and I watch them regularly and she's very fond of your channel too. I have one question if you could please throw some light on it. Is it allowed for the serve receiver to move before the service is done or is it a fault?
If I remember this clearly, it is fault if you make a movement while serve is being prepared and is not done yet. For example, if you shake your racket, while preparing to receive the shuttle, some umpires might consider this as a fault on serious tournament/championships
TYSM 😍 + Please make video for 3rd shots as well in doubles, such that we are more likely to get the lift. I have a general idea of keeping the shuttle low and targeting empty spots but more info would be welcome. Especially when other team attacks my low serve like this :P
You're very welcome 😀 Thanks for the idea, if it's a really good return there aren't too many options! The best option is to try and steer the shuttle into a space, away from your opponents like you say. This is a difficult skill to master and you really need to move fast to reach the shuttle in time and then be able to control your shot!
Great video! How about a video on how both partners should position themselves on the court when receiving a serve? I noticed in most international tournaments, that the other partner on the receiving team is positioned at the center of the court (not on the opposite box), while the one receiving the actual serve is near the net.
one suggestion required: since last Sunday I am having pain between knee and leg joint... any suggestion.. from YT i put a finger on inflammation area and lift my leg.. for time I feel okay.. any exercise to make it strong?
We would suggest using a massage device (bit.ly/amazonmassagedevice) it will reduce the stiffness of the muscle. Often a tight quad leads to sore knees! Any more serious pain you should seek advice from a doctor! Hope this helps
I think we have future star actress in the making with the "throwing the arms up while blaming her partner after a great middle serve return by Greg! XD
I have a good news for u guys. I forwarded this video to all club members of a club I am joining. On Friday evening I played with them and I noticed they changed the ready position (as a receiver). 😂😂😂. I was and am still happy about it. Of course I didn’t say that they changed because of the video I sent . 😄 Thank you sooooo much David
"most player will play the same serve everytime"...that i so me😂 I used the flick serve if i am serving on the right, and a slow serve on the T line if i was serving on the left side..and it became a habit that most player just get used to it now😂
So is the idea that you start with the Bevel grip, and then quickly change to a forehand or backhand grip depending on where the shuttle comes? Or do you return a serve with a Bevel grip, regardless of where it comes?
I notice that you step out of the service court after the serve is delivered but before receiving which seems to contradict with the BWF rules. Section 4.1 Laws of Badminton 10.1.1 The players shall serve from, and receive in, their respective right service courts when the server has not scored or has scored an even number of points in that game.
We would recommend standing further back (enough so that you can get the flick back comfortably), and then work on your explosive leg strength so that you can stand closer to the line but your opponent knows you can jump back to attack the flick anytime! 👍🏼 Keep experimenting with how close you can stand!
I think I'm pretty decent on returning serves to the T or my body. Towards the end of the video, you warned of wide low serves. Now how do you punish that? I never knew how. Please help.
Always lead with your racket leg for low wide serves and do your best to play a flat or downwards shot! A net shot can work or a hard shot down the middle or to the back corners - it totally depends where your opponents are positioned
Hello. I'm trying to practice these with a group of 4 people. How much time/number of returns for each type of return do you think should be enough for 1 day practice? Our time constraints are that we only have 45 minutes to practice most basic serve returns. And 4 players.
Uhmm had a question. After returning serve, do you cover the T by staying as front court player or move a bit back to cover your half of court? I've seen LYD do both with YYS, and other players too generally. So i guess it's not about who's the preferred front court or backcourt player. I do a mix of both ways, depending on what return I am doing and whether I think by rushing to the net will put my backcourt partner in danger by a fast drive to backcourt corner I've left. But my partners are always confused as to what I'm gonna do. I think they should be flexible and be ready for both of my movements. What is the real answer to this?
Exactly right - it's about creating a set play. We'd advise telling your partner which you plan to do (stay in, or cover the half) - we often say something like "net and I'll stay in" or "flat to the back corner and I'll cover my half", just so we can be as effective as possible. You don't always see pairs communicating where they'll return the serve - but if you find it's something you and your partner are struggling with, it's worth telling them beforehand!
Oddly enough, I can't find a tutorial on returning the forehand serve (in particular in doubles). Lots on backhand but the forehand presents different challenges because of the increased angle making it hard to cover the outside front and nearside back corners. Could you point me to a relevant video or perhaps make one? Thanks ee.
What can you do in doubles then the opposition serves from outwide, aiming down the middle? E.g. If I'm on the right side of the court, and then server serves it mid height, catching the middle line. It's on my backhand, but I've never sure how to return this. Help!
I am not good at playing back hand. I feel I don't have energy to return back hand shots and often lose a point. Can I improve it with practice or live with it? Opponents often targeting my back hand 😀☹️
Thanks for the question Keith! We've actually had a lot of people asking this, so we have added it to our schedule - it will hopefully be a video in the next 3-4 weeks!
@@BadmintonInsight Thankyou. I played tonight and I kept winning points as I smashed the return into their body and they said you can’t do it even though I was stood in the middle of the service box as they hit the shuttlecock. Glad I was right haha
Please explain whether server can be charged by receiver? Whenever I serve the opponent charged and it my eyes few times luckily nothing serious happened.!
I never understood why you can't receive serves with your racket leg forward. all other shots in badminton are racket leg led. Even after playing a drop shot and good players are ready to pounce for the net kill or forcing that lift, they have their racket foot forward. Surely this situation is the same as receiving a serve?
@@BadmintonInsight ya, i was always taught this but never had a satisfactory answer. Surely receiving a serve is the same situation as waiting for a net kill? But everyone has their racket leg forward for that but the non-dominant leg forward for receiving serves. doesn't make sense.
It’s all about experimenting! Most often people have this mindset, and therefore stand much further back but only get flicked once in an entire match! Experiment standing as close as you can!
Did you just have 1 "go-to" return of serve before this video? Hopefully you can use our tips to improve your serve & return game! 🏸
Yes I usually only lift 🙈🙈

I notice that you step out of the service court after the serve is delivered but before receiving which seems to contradict with the BWF rules.

Exactly right - it's about creating a set play. @@BadmintonInsight Thankyou. I played tonight and I kept winning points as I smashed the return into their body and they said you can’t do it even though I was stood in the middle of the service box as they hit the shuttlecock. Glad I was right haha
Thankuuu 🎉
how to received if the shuttle is flick upward or lift at the back how can i reach the shuttle
Please explain whether server can be charged by receiver? Whenever I serve the opponent charged and it my eyes few times luckily nothing serious happened.!
No, the receiver can't move until the shuttle has been struck by the server! If they move before, it is a fault!
Hi Sir,
I have a doubt.
Can the receiver move during service until shuttlecock has crossed over to receiver's court?
They can move as soon as the server has struck the shuttle!
@@BadmintonInsight But, they cannot strike the shuttle if it is still in my court, right?
Nice video, though hard to follow the foot work when you're both left handed
Amazing...
I never understood why you can't receive serves with your racket leg forward. all other shots in badminton are racket leg led.
Even after playing a drop shot and good players are ready to pounce for the net kill or forcing that lift, they have their racket foot forward. Surely this situation is the same as receiving a serve?
Do you mean whilst you are waiting to receive the serve?
@@BadmintonInsight ya, i was always taught this but never had a satisfactory answer. Surely receiving a serve is the same situation as waiting for a net kill? But everyone has their racket leg forward for that but the non-dominant leg forward for receiving serves. doesn't make sense.
Easier said than done.
But how would you return the high serve if you’re standing so close to serve line?
It’s all about experimenting! Most often people have this mindset, and therefore stand much further back but only get flicked once in an entire match! Experiment standing as close as you can!
@@BadmintonInsight Okay! Will try this today. Thank you!
My phone broke while smashing the subscribe button like u said
Get me a new phone bruh 🙄
Haha 😂 subscribing is worth the broken phone 😉
@@BadmintonInsight 😉😂

Plz. Revise again the practise or tips you show in video by your lefty partner for lefty viewers .
Brilliant and the video was too much use full
Thanks for watching and we're glad it was helpful!
U people confuse in between right hand and left hand shuttle holders
What happened to latest videos?
Technical error on YT, re-uploading now - should be live in the next hour!!
❤
Thanks for the support! :)
You show returns when the shuttlecock comes right to you, but usually the serve is to the farthest place away from you
I little one step movement or reach should do the trick! We mention out wide serves where you can play a net shot. Hope that helps :)
👍👍
Thanks! 👍🏼
Wish one of you was right handed lol
Lefties
Both of you left-handed...
Try to demonstrate by using either one ...
You both are left handers😑😑
Yes we are but we show demonstrations right handed too!
@@BadmintonInsight i saw but bit confusing
