I grew up in East Belfast. I am 11 years younger than Jim. I had to work all over Belfast, including in the Rock Bar at the top of the Falls road and the guy I was working with at the Rock Bar name was Billy. So prods had to change names as well. All the people here got played, the protestants too. This guy Jimmy knows this, or should. I was at Bobby Sands funeral when I was supposed to be at Orangefield boys school. There wasn't many prods there that day. My da was a superprod lol but my Aunt was leading the Sinn Fein Smash H Blocks from her home in South Belfast. Jimmy seems bitter, still. I would hope he can heal.
I lived there too, raised in Madrid St but born in 1972. I remember as an early teenager my dad telling me about this night. St Matthew's steeple has always seemed like a raised middle finger to the people that surrounded us. Years later, awaiting serious surgery my dad was in a bed beside someone who had attacked the church that night. As he was being prepared for surgery, this guy turned to my dad and said "we'll get that church in the end". He died on the operating table. Such was the level of hatred towards the Short Strand.

@sybennett7392 The British state will never have control in ulster Ireland 🇮🇪 as in every single generation of Irish people have shown that ! The conditions on the ground at the minute don't justify war !
My father from the newtownards rd was a brass moulder in the shipyard one week after he served his apprentiship he was told to pick up his cards because the trade was finished so no auld crap about discrimination.
Yeah unfortunately for you and your anecdotal story, we have government statistics that proved catholics were unemployed at double the rate, and the shipyards went from about 1/3 catholics to zero after the 1920s pogroms.
A good friend of mine was abducted and taken to Short Strand. He was 17 but looked far younger. It was there that he was punched and kicked then had breeze blocks dropped on his face. They then drove over his head. Police were looking for a suspect wearing a red jumper. Reason being that the victim had red threads under his fingernails trying to defend himself. All because he was a Protestant. Always two sides to a story
I believe you. I knew a fella called Andy mason from Lisburn. I was a catholic but he sort of hung around with my mixed crowd sometimes who were mostly Protestants. We were all into heavy metal so religion didn’t really matter. Andy was in a flute band and they were traveling through carn lough up the north east coast. A lot of west Belfast people went there for their holidays. Anyway, the bus full of bandsmen stopped for a piss stop (I don’t know why in an area like that) and Andy was blocked and got lost somehow. He was beaten to death by a bunch of Catholics. And not just beaten. They stabbed him and slashed his throat. So there were sectarian killings (random killing by normal thugs) on both sides
The ones in Belfast are a different bread from the rest of the country, and Derry toos a different bread, but Belfast is extreme, and that's both side I'm talking about, and its the same to this day. Unionists and loyalists in my area don't relate to them much, back then and now, Ive went as far as calling them scumbags before, the time of the holycross school protest showed them up big time, we where all saying what the hell they doing blocking kids from going to school, that's not on, I agree a lot of what Seamus said here is true, but there's a lot that he's not saying too, yes workingclass Catholics were lookin the vote, but so we're working class protestants The police was not all protestant, catholic officers served with great courage and got promoted to high ranks, these guys where on top of the PIRA target lists, and they would kill them as a example to others not to join the RUC.
Yep, poverty was inflicted on all ... that's why working class people should be united and be for Equal rights. But Sectarianism was another tool good for nothing except Dividing and distraction
I was born in Wishaw a very Protestant area. But even when I landed a job at the British national oil corporation in Glasgow, as soom as the other draftsmen and engineering staff heard yor Irish name they totally went after you. If you sat near them in ths cafeteria they would get up and move. Being Catholic in the west of Scotland was equal to being black in American south.

The Monklands Council Scandal in Lanarkshire exposed their Catholic-only employment policy. Get educated, and stop embarrassing yourself.
Great interview but why the history lesson at the start😂. My grandfather was with the Brits during WW2 during the Dunkirk evacuation. Almost died and spent hours in the water. Bodies everywhere. I got the story published in the Irish News In 1998. He claimed when he got back from the war he couldn’t get a job because he was a Catholic. Idk, but anyway, we were a Catholic family in Lisburn and did get discriminated against and many Catholics were killed in the town. Around the Anglo Irish agreement loads of Catholics were burnt out and we had wet blankets and fire extinguishers all over the house. My mate saw Michael stones victim, McPolin, a minute after he took 2 shotgun blasts. My mate paul taggart was stabbed 70 times with a screw driver behind the leisure center. Anyway, my point is, all this shit happened when I was growing up but most of my friends were Protestant so I knew everyone wasn’t bad and I held no bitterness at the time and still do t to this day. I take no side but can totally see both sides’ point of view. I moved to the US in 2000, Like Seamus, I have some weird trauma, especially when watching channels like this. These Americans don’t have a clue what it was like and I feel very alone sometimes and the only people that do are the NI people on both sides. BTW, prods shouted SSRUC too
