It isn't perfect, but Sony's 15/1.4 G is truly a next level APS-C lens: VERY sharp, well-corrected for chromatic aberration under proper lighting, EXTRAORDINARILY well-corrected for focus breathing. Buy here: geni.us/N2IWj
I could definitely see it as a complement to our Tamron 28-75/2.8 when shooting 4K/60p on our a7 IV.
Then again, it is effectively a full frame field of view and depth of field equivalent of a 23mm f/2; I wish I'd had Nikon's full frame 24mm f/1.8 so I could compare the two.

Absolutely incredible that such an aperture can be achieved in this focal length. I wished Fujifilm could have an 11mm f1.8 That would sort me out for Real Estate and landscapes/Astral photography. This does open up a whole new set of opportuities for APS-C shooters on Sony.
On Fuji, The Samyang 12mm f2 has been received quite favorably, and I am managing well with the Sigma 16, which is optically excellent, sharp corners and controlled distortion make perspective panoramas for outdoor real estate shots of the façade are a breeze. A true UW would be down at 11mm, and I know it’s important for interiors, hopefully we will need some movement on that. Given the coming XH2S’ video shooter focus, I imagine more UW lenses on X mount will be coming soon
Nice review Hugh! It’s very good to see such a fast apsc ultra wide prime from a major brand! I was hoping for something similar for Canon EF-S mount but… no. Let’s hope for the RF mount.
also Tamron 11-20 f/2.8 goes for $650 now :D
Actually considering this lens with the ZVE10 for gimbal work - maybe using the Zhiyun M3.
Thanks for the review.
Just to share that, the XF16-55, is also a bit too old and quality below average considering it is a red badge lens.
You may be right, to my chagrin. Things are evolving rapidly now.
You are definitely on a roll this week.
Be lucky stay safe
Thanks, Will! You too!
The Sigma 16 1.4 is a great lens and at half the price.
I think if budget is the number one concern the Sigma makes a lot of sense.
Question to host: Does this mean the aps-c brand of Sony cameras are not dead?
I now believe Sony will develop an APS-C camera body (or bodies) up to the standard of these lenses: I wouldn’t have thought so a month ago. Imagine, however, this scenario: they end production of the a6xxx body in favor of putting Sony variants of the Fujifilm X-H2 series sensors into the a7C body, now with room for a brand new IBIS system - and then upgrade the EVF to the one either in the a7 IV (3.7m dot) or ‘R IVa (5.7 million dot)- and upgrade the rear panel.
I've used the 10-18/4 for work the last 3 years and have absolutely hated it. Soft, Old, and Expensive. Why does Sony still sell it for full price? Just pre-ordered the 10-20/4pz this morning!
Enjoy it!
looks like a great lens and a great trio....
Hi, Paul!
@@3BMEP Great review as usual Hugh!
This is worth a look see. I've been using the Samyang 12mm f/2 for video work and the focus breathing on that lens is just awful. If the new Sony were a 12mm, it would be an instant buy for me. Still worth pondering though at 15mm.
they also announced an 11mm f1.8 G for aps-c too Cams...
@@paulgero So they did. Excellent! Though I don't think it's a G, which is a little strange since the other two are. I'll still be buying it though!
I wouldn’t count out Sigma from delivering some new UW lenses this year too judging by how they are moving within APSC this year
Will there also be videos about the other two new Sony APS lenses?
I like that lenses seem to become smaller after optically good but huge glass bricks like Zeiss Otus and many Sigma lenses.
come on Sony, where is the new 35mmf14?
I agree about the 10-18mm
That kept me from buying one all those years.
It's nice to see new APS gear from Sony :-)
sony needs to release a new aps-c camera with GOOD IBIS, 10 bit, low/no rolling shutter, swivel screen and EVF.
Great review, would you not consider the sigma 16 1.4 as a better option? Only a bit bigger, crazy sharp with good auto focus and nearly half the price?
Too much CA for me.
Lenstip compared the two and the new Sony was sharper.
@@3BMEP which one has more CA of the two?
@@jameiealehandro Sigma has more.
I think a new Sony apsc camera body is just around the corner. I also would love if Sony focuses on apsc telephoto like Fuji and give us the best telephoto apsc zoom for video.
I suspect you’re right
The new 18-120 power zoom from Fuji will be hard to beat-to my mind it’s Sigma that can do the most by selling to both E and X mount
@@The_CGA Sony had 18-105mm f4 power zoom for some years now. But it is old and would not be a good enough competition for Fuji 18-120. Sigma cannot compete on autofocus and oss of Sony lenses. Only Sony can come up with a new lens here.
But all of the above really doesn't matter because no Sony apsc shoots 10bit 4.2.2 and 4k 60p. But I am sure that is about to change.b
I still don't get where the elephant 🐘 came from. But good points I have been tempted to get my first mirrorless from Sony now I'm not sure if I should because Fuji has better and there not even full frame
It is several years (too) late for a very good Lens like this to arrive for Sony APSC Cameras, if Sony wants to carry on making APSC Cameras and Lenses, then Sony needs to make higher end APSC Cameras and more high end Lenses !
Agreed.
Is Sony trying to compete with Fuji?
Sony catching bodies
Swimming in an ocean of specs...
Can I even understand the so many names of cameras that Sony has. Its far too confusing for me. And that why I would never buy a Sony.
