    I'm curious if the distortion pattern changes with the focus distance. You mentioned corners warping in video. So may be the distortion is not /that/ bad at 'infinity'? (I assume the chart is not that big so you had to put the camera quite close to it)

    • @victorlim5077
      @victorlim5077 2 роки тому +1

      The distortion will only be obvious in video mode during racking focus, not stills. Due to the corrections of the strong barrel distortion profile.

      @@victorlim5077 ah! I think I get it: the warping is a result of a part of the image going into the more distorted area. And the distortion itself is constant. Thanks!

      If Sony makes pro A7000/A9000 Cameras and if those Cameras will sell in large quantity, then maybe Sony will make GM Lenses for APSC, but I doubt it, production of Cameras go more and more towards 24x36 and 33x44 mm sized sensor Cameras in the pro end of the market.

      @nodidog 2 роки тому

      It kind of goes against the APS-C use case for me. I'm drawn to the size and weight savings - if you are prioritizing purely for image quality, then surely just move up the range to one of the full-frame offerings? GM lenses often weigh 3-4x as much as other options, and are much bulkier. I think we will see more G line lenses in the next 18 months though, alongside new bodies.

      The 15mm are much sharper the the 11mm !There are big difference in focal length, the 11mm are equivalent to a 16.5mm Lens i full frame, the 15mm are equivalent to a 22.5mm Lens in full frame, so the 11mm have a much wider angle of view. The 15mm Lens are a much more general wide angle Lens, the 11mm are a more specialized Lens.

After put this 15mmF1.4 lens on my A74, I see in EVF (or on LCD) there is 2 black vertical lines on each side close to the frame, and if I switch to MF (Manual Focus) it disappears. Switch back to AF and 2 vertical lines show back up. Is that normal? l don't have this issue with my 35mmGM. I wonder if I received a defective lens? Thank you.

    • @TechnoBabble

      A lens' aperture is a physical thing, it doesn't change if you put it on a different sensor size. However, a larger sensor using the same aperture and an equivalent focal length to get the same field of view will give you a more out of focus background.
      Larger sensors also generally produce less noise, so with similar technology a FF camera with an f/1.4 lens has half the noise of an APS-C camera with an f/1.4 lens.

    • @pizzablender
      @pizzablender 2 роки тому +1

      A 22 mm f/2.1 on a full frame camera will take the exact same pictures as this 15/1.4 on APS-C with regards to light gathered (low light image quality), bokeh, depth of field and field of view.

    I still don't think it's even remotely acceptable to leave lenses this uncorrected for distortion even in the name of size. Sony's APS-C cameras and lenses are already comically small, and leaving the corrections almost entirely up to whoever's behind the camera just seems lazy.

    • @TechnoBabble
      @TechnoBabble 2 роки тому +6

      Huh? You don't do the corrections yourself. The camera does it automatically for JPEG and video and in RAW your editing software should have a correction profile for it. On top of that these new Sony lenses are better than all competition for APS-C lenses while being smaller and lighter, thanks to not correcting distortion optically.

    • @RealRaynedance
      @RealRaynedance 2 роки тому

      @@TechnoBabble You seem to be missing the part where corrections in post degrade image quality (the corner stretching is painfully obvious even in the video) and _I just said I disagree about it being for size reasons_ for lenses and cameras that are already small.
      When chasing size comes at this cost, it's going too far.

    • @TechnoBabble
      @TechnoBabble 2 роки тому +5

      @@RealRaynedance The Sony 11mm has the best corners of any APS-C ultrawide and the 15mm has better corners than the Sigma 16mm. But hey, I'm sure you know more than Sony's optical engineers about what they should prioritize.

    • @toms3485
      @toms3485 2 роки тому

      @@TechnoBabble Nobody is claiming to know more than Sony engineers. His argument, that it would have been better to increase size and weight for better image corners, sounds reasonable to me, and Sony engineers might even agree.

    • @TechnoBabble
      @TechnoBabble 2 роки тому +1

      @@toms3485 And price. Everyone seems to keep forgetting price. They can't JUST increase the size and weight to correct distortion better, they would also be increasing the cost of producing the lens. On top of that, why would it be better? Clearly at this price point it WOULD NOT have been better, AS THESE LENSES HAVE SOME OF THE BEST OPTICAL PERFORMANCE AROUND.
      You're all talking about theoretical stuff here instead of actually looking at the results, clearly the distortion correction isn't reducing image quality enough to matter if it's still outperforming the competition.
