Built one of these 16' from your plans set about 20 yrs ago. Excellent performer and only 38lbs. Gets admiration from people every time I bring it out. Built the hull out of 1/4" mahogany luan from Home Depot, skinned in 4oz cloth. The deck out of 3/32" door skins. Added 2 light stringers from the center to the rear bulkhead (to cradle the hatch), and the whole boat finished out beautifully.
So I just watch your build it's a nice build and I realize that this is being done for ordinary person but there are better tips which you can incorporate in this build as far as clean up is concern and protection of the finish. I do not care for the use of the wire along the hull as that will show up in the finish. These are a few ideas I think that can be done. First a Aluminium ,stainless or carbon fiber strip along the bow edge would do much better in protecting the wood from damage. The seal you are using for the hatch is a Automotive seal that is universal there are better seals than that which I would use. As far as fiberglassing the top and curtains forming from to much epoxy a simple trick is to put masking tape to protect the sides. As far as not penetrating the fiberglass while sanding a third even coat should be done as inexperienced people will penetrate to the glass layer. Construction. I would like to see at least 3 layers of fiberglass under the pilot area and a better seat and a back rest in the kit. and two layers of fiberglass around the inside of the boat.
I agree with almost every one of your notes here. That video was made almost 20 years ago to the day and getting a bit aged. Our current assembly manuals reflect all of your suggested refinements and a great many more, besides. There ARE 3 layers of 'glass under the cockpit seat. And there are dozens of aftermarket seat options.
Normally I find these how to video's very dull and boring. It's nice to fine someone that has a since of humor for a change. CLC should have you do all their video. Great video.
Sanding? I guess I am a rare breed because that was my job and I loved it.. I did cabinetmaking for about 10 years (went to college for it) and my main job for about 8 years was sanding and finishing... My boss loved me. When we were doing a project and we would find a mistake he would think we had to remake something, I would say "hang on I got this".. He would walk away for a bit. When he came back and looked he had a hard time finding the mistake and he knew where it was.. So after a few times of doing this, it became normal to hear "Hey Steve come take a look at this" at least once a week.
Did Vikings have Trombones and a lake to get buried ?. Can build from your video . Informative on potential niggles . Brilliant expose . Thank you Jazman and helper ❤❤ . UK Dave .
Literally one of the most entertaining g and well produced and sublimely enjoyable videos I've seen in a hella long time! John Harris, I'll never forget you, man! Thanks for making my week!
You COULD use denim. Because it's tightly woven, it will be difficult to saturate with epoxy. And since it's heavier than fiberglass, I would expect the boat to be substantially heavier. From a structural standpoint...I don't think there's a problem. It'll be strong enough.
The one thing I can't find in the video, or the PDF is what one does with the point of the bow when fiberglassing. This thing has by far the pointiest upper bow of any boat I have buit. These days that would be regarded as a flaw as it has a lot of wind drag, doesn't do much that is useful. However, it is very characteristic of the boat, and I like it. If one fiberglasses right up to the point from the hull, and the deck, there isn't much that is left uncovered, just the very point. Has that proven sufficient to protect the bow? Normally I would work a bias patch over the nose, but it is so sharp there is no way it is going to not divide, experience with 300 ft of WLL tells me. Any ideas?
Great video thx. But I never heard anyone say...' E-poxy', I wonder how you pronounce 'epiphany or epiphone' not mocking just curious is it a regional dialect or a personal character. Huh
As the on-camera guy in the video, hearing myself say "EEE-poxy" is like fingernails on a chalkboard. Cringe-worthy. Here's what's weird: I never pronounced it like that before I made the video, or after. (It's ih-POX-ee.) Oh well...that was 19 years ago. I should probably dub in the correct pronunciation.
For such a benign topic as this, you've certainly made it amusing and humorous - very much appreciated and definitely takes any seriousness and dryness out of the video. I am about to buy one so looking forward to the adventure!

Wonder if.....One was to use the stitch and glue method using fiberglass bottom and side panels. The panels could be made as usual from your patterns using 3/4" ply covered both sides and the edges with Formica. Then wax the Formica with parting wax and do the lay-up. We would be basically making a mold for a flat panels to the shape dictated by the plan. The construction method would be the same using copper wire zip ties. I would then use strip planks for the deck. Opinion?
So I have zero intentions of building a boat, yet for some reason I couldn't stop watching this video. Idk what happened.
sinformant it is entrancing.
Oh, just go ahead and build one. It will be more fun than you think.

This never gets old, John. Well, at least the video is ageless.
Extremely well done video. The drama, the humor, the... whatever that was... Thank you.
LOL. Did you actually burn a kayak for your burning-kayak joke cutscenes?
I enjoyed watching the build simple and precise instructions have to build one for myself can we get the kit in AUSTRALIA
Regards HARRY SEAL

"Don't not stop me if it doesn't not go badly." too funny!
Dude ! Introduction was fantastic. With one line you convinced me i need to spend one hour watching you. I WILL.!
All the Viking funeral references were not unwelcome.

The obsession with burning boats is excellent.
Literally one of the most entertaining g and well produced and sublimely enjoyable videos I've seen in a hella long time!
John Harris, I'll never forget you, man!
Thanks for making my week!
Wish I could get the plans of this beautiful kyak and try to build it during the pandemic

I’m just starting to use peel ply, and it really cuts down on sanding! Great Video 😊
Different coasts, different pronunciations. eeepoxy vs ehpoxy. Everytime I hear eeepoxy my mind goes "What?". Great video though.
sanding is fun, sanding is fun, sanding is fun, sanding is fun, sanding is fun, sanding is fun, sanding is fun, sanding is fun........
Excellent instructional video, I’ve seen a lot over the years and this is one of the best!
Sanding is FUN!
I want one.... Or two!
I no doubt learned some tricks in this video.....thanks.
Certainly 2001 meme worthy. Good on ya lads.
Takeaway from this video. It's easier to build a kayak than play golf
Epoxy was originally called EPON, & was used in aircraft in WW2, usually for things with compound curves, like Air Scoops, Cowling parts, etc.
how often does one need to revarnish/touch up year to year if that's the route they choose?
THANKS for posting!
I would stitch the hull and strip plank the deck. Paint the hull and varnish the deck.
be honest now ,, you built one of these before
Very cool.
THE question........ Would denim fabric be suitable to replace fiberglass...or is it really a bad idea?
You COULD use denim. Because it's tightly woven, it will be difficult to saturate with epoxy. And since it's heavier than fiberglass, I would expect the boat to be substantially heavier. From a structural standpoint...I don't think there's a problem. It'll be strong enough.
6:42 THIS MAN'S A HERO
and then you might have to burn it! lmao!!!
Great build along thanks for the video upload
sanding is fun gggrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!! 😭😅

no chamfering?

@@ChesapeakeLightCraftBoats ahh. Now I understand, it's a great video, thx again
Good Job, Awesome kayak, funny Video 😁👍🏻
I will find a nether site,
Nice !
The blooper reel just reminds me of making instructional videos for machines produced by my last employer ... LOL
Very cool
O serrote japonês corta quando se puxa e não quando se empurra. Estão, não se deve forçar o serrote japonês para frente.
Great video!
i like the music

The outtakes so that we watch the credits is a great touch. Now I know that John C. Harris was responsible for the "chimp sound fx"!

Sanding is fun
Boat building is 95% sanding
Thus boat building is fun
Thanks so much. Lots of fun and many questions answered.
Great video, its very satisfying to watch 👍🏾
The Real Slim Shady of kayak is good 😁
why not wheel the bandsaw out into the garden.
Why do you have to varnish over the epoxy? Isn't the epoxy a more durable finish?
There are no UV-stable epoxies, so the epoxy coating has to be protected by paint or varnish.
Geat!!! Very nice video and information.... best wishes
Hi. Great work John. How does one go about buying plans from you. I live in south africa so no chance of getting a kit. Thanks
We ship plans overseas every day! www.clcboats.com/shop/boat-plans/
Funny to hear epoxy is a new thing because today every DIY channel use epoxy 😂
To be fair, this video was filmed 20 years ago!
Does the boat require varnish or paint after the epoxy to stay waterproof? Great video. I learned so much.
No. The epoxy IS the water proofing. The varnish is to protect the epoxy from UV damage.
use autocue next time.
great build tho
I like how use humor for your how to
Immense video job done.
Anyone got a link to purchase a kit from them

Entertaining and educational
Very good. Thank you.
Flaming kayaks, Batman.
How do you get ride of the seam in the center down the side.?
Lots of sanding...
how old is this video really it does not look from 2017
2001. This video is so old that it was originally released on VHS tape! And really starting to show it...
Sanding is FUN!
Can the poly varnish be sprayed instead?
Absolutely! If you're good at spraying, that's the preferred way.
Sand is fun... 🤪
sanding is fun
good job
Awesome video
Relaxing 🕶️
Best movie i've ever watched!
This was fantastic.
Using CNC is cheating.
