Hi Dr. Goertz, I’ve been looking for a video just like this one thank you! I’d appreciate any insight you have for people like me who want to change their careers from business/commerce to the psychiatric field. I know a lot of time will be needed for schooling and residency and I’m committed to doing so but I just wonder if there are things that I need to be aware of. Thank you for your great content
Call your local psych ward director and ask to shadow one of the techs / nurses, or cald call the doctors. Psych is extremely unique and you cannot adequately prepare for the first time you step through the doors of the ward.

hey Dr, id love your advice on something, im a freshman in collage whos really interested in psychiatry but im very intimidated by med school since i wasnt the most motivated student in highschool grade wise, but i believe in my ability. im just scared of failing to reach my goal.
Slash, fellow pre-med here who was a bit lazy in high school. Fear of failure will deadlock you, and you won’t be able to make any decisions. If you don’t make any Decisions, you will regret the missed opportunities for the rest of your life. Taking a risk and failing is a great way to discover your limits and determine if you want something bad enough. My uncle is a physician who was accepted to med school on his 4th try. He didn’t let his failures overcome him, don’t let them overcome you! When Ochem is kicking my butt, I remember this phrase: “nothing good comes easy”.
In my opinion, it is entirely possible for someone to become a good doctor, if they did not get good grades in high school. Various potential challenges can be overcome, e.g. I once worked with a medical student in her 60’s, and she was excellent. Peter Goertz
I do get quite frustrated when patients complain about things ive already told them how to fix. For example, an older gentleman who injured his hands is disabled. Doesnt want to keep paying rent. He has his paperwork from Dr. lives in a house the city will pay for. But did not give his paperwork to me until it was too late. The wait list is closed. Has been talking about rent help for months after I told him I need his paperwork. He also did not give me his paperwork for his other benefits in time. He would search for them, find them, just to lose track of them again 4 or 5 times before I actually ended up getting the paper. Or say he has more important stuff to worry about, when asked to find them, which actually does not have a deadline in a week. Or at all.
This paperwork issue - reminds me of how people on Medicaid, who have lost their paperwork are being removed from Medicaid. In this age of computers, I wouldn't think paperwork would be an issue!
Hello Dr, Goertz, wanted to add an opinion if a patient is in an er/ observation how can the hospital eliminate boarding and find the patient a bed in an inpatient ward?

Thank you very much! Your question may be a topic that can be addressed as part of a future video.

there are other ways to practice in mental health without being a psychiatrist.

This can be a challenge. Hospital administrators may need to get involved.
