Why you DON'T need HOBBY MOTIVATION to paint, build and play Warhammer 40k or Age of Sigmar

  • We've all heard a lot about hobby motivation. How the motivation goes up, down and sometimes disappear for days, weeks, months or even years.
But I don't think hobby motivation or the lack thereof is really at the heart of the issue.
In this video, I share my thoughts and perspectives on "hobby motivation" and how we can make it easier to engage with the hobby we all love: tabletop wargaming whether it's Warhammer 40000, Age of Sigmar, Moonstone, Conquest or any other awesome miniature game!

I just played in a tournament where my opponent pulled out a chess clock HALFWAY THROUGH our game, with no discussion or warning. I just kept playing because I didn't want to start a fuss, but the tournament rules were that you could only use a chess clock if BOTH players agree to it so in hindsight I should have said no or called a TO over because he was out of line

That sounds really stressful! I don't think I would have said anything in the situation either but yeah... That doesn't sound great at all.

He probably thought you were slow playing and wanted to split the remaining time fairly

@@timho4386 He definitely thought that, but we finished our game with 15 minutes left and he was the only one who ended up going over the clock on some of his turns (in which case he would ignore the clock). This was Blood Bowl btw so not like 40k where you never finish a game

Great video! One thing that's helped me A LOT is to stop trying to force myself to paint a lot at a time. I wanted to get a lot done but "I should paint for at least an hour" just drained my motivation. Instead I'm forcing myself to paint at least a single brushstroke per day. That's it. Everything else is a bonus. It's such a ridiculously low demand that I don't have excuses not to and once I get started I almost always find the motivation to do a lot more. I've done this for about a month now and I've painted Triumph of Saint Katherine (a very detailed model), 10 zephyrim, most of an exorcist and done basing for 13 arco flagellants. All of these done in great detail and all from just demanding a single brushstroke per day from myself, then motivating myself from there once I'm already doing it. I think a lot of us find painting fun when we can do it without demand, so it's more about just getting started

Thank you! I completely agree! I also sometimes decide to just paint a single boot or the silver on a weapon and then end up painting for hours. Finding ways to make getting started easier is such a game changer!
And well done for getting so many models painted. That's awesome!

Great video, I think this is a really healthy approach and I hear a lot of the same thing from coaches talking about running "motivation". Thanks for talking about it

Thank you so much! It makes a lot of sense to me that it's much the same with running.

To add to my X comment, I am a teacher of speech and debate. I have a class full of highly motivated students, and we are a really competitive team. Other teams around me have after school teams, but my school has a dedicated class. In that class I have time and space for my student to use that motivation without other items getting in the way. I feel the same with this hobby, you have to give it time and space.

I completely agree. Time and Space is so important. Those are some of the biggest barriers I think.
Btw, sounds awesome with a class like that!

Cool video, super relatable (writing this looking at an unfinished, kitbashed Deffkilla Wartrike), and the tips were very helpful, going to try keeping some easy to paint models to hand so I can just start painting.

Interesting video. I think my lack of motivation is that I`m just not interested in the hobby anymore! I`m so hearing this in your excuses that you find everything so difficult

    • @dicendemons
      @dicendemons  Місяць тому

If you're not interested then of course you're not motivated. But I guess it's not an issue really since it's not something you have to do. It's a hobby and if you loose interest then that's just fine. I haven't lost interest. Sometimes, stuff just gets in the way.
