  • So you want to paint an army for Warhammer 40.000, Age of Sigmar, Conquest or another big army game?
That's great! But before you invest too much time, energy and money try asking yourself some key questions to avoid these common mistakes that many people make when they start a new army project.

There's one point that is worth remembering as well. Not every model yo paint has to be for an army. If you think a specific model or unit looks good and you want to paint it, go for it. You don't need an army to go with it.

Oh absolutely! There are so many other ways to approach mini painting than just painting an army. I completely agree.

Great advice! I'm struggling a little bit with landing on a colour scheme for my army and it's almost been a year of progress.
I'm the opposite where I love all the elves but definitely not keen on skin. My wraithguard look like gundams and my incubi are cyberpunk

This was very helpful to listen to, and is really making me think about what it is that I enjoy painting. I also think painting is great for mental health, it's part of why I do it so thanks for calling it out.

Another mistake to avoid is picking an army you don't have the skills for (yet?). I am quite guilty about that one. I got into Warhammer in November 2021 and started with AoS. I bought the warrior starter and immediately after it the Dominion box. Both factions are pretty easy to paint for a new player and I do love elves so, I bought myself the Lumineth X-mas box. Until this date the models in the box are not painted because I found out, yes Lumineth look pretty but they are a lot smaller and super detailed. I also found out, at that time, that my skill level was nowhere near where it needed to be to paint them in a way that would make me happy.
Another mistake I am guilty of, and I guess many of us are, is buying more than painting. Which means I have a lot of grey plastic waiting to be painted. I did make a new year's resolution at the start of 2024 though: No new models until the bulk of my pile of 'potential' is painted up. I've held to that resolution with ehm some success. That is to say, I did buy some terrain and asked for terrain for my birthday which was in February and I got one combat patrol (Sisters of Battle) but those have been my only purchases for the last 4 months.
Anyway, just wanted to contribute these 2 'bonus' mistakes. I liked the video. It is always nice to see other hobbyists talk about their hobby. Best of luck and enjoy your Waaaaaagh!!!!! :)

      Great advice!
Some armies are just more difficult to paint than others. I think that's why I prefer the more bulky stuff to elves for instance. There's just more room for painting which to me makes it a lot easier.
My pile of potential always grows faster than my stack of painted models. If I start ferling overwhelmed, I usually end up selling stuff. But I try to limit my purchases to models I think I'm realistically going to paint 😅

I’m no expert painter just got into the hobby. I like what you did with the raptadon. I just think if you made the head the same color as the body where you didn’t take as much time it honestly came out better to the naked eye. Keep it up.

Great insight, hopefully this will help people pick and painting their armies. Personally I pick an army, then pick a theme I would enjoy and modify the army to match that. The downside is you can spend as much time modifying them as painting, fortunately that’s something I enjoy.

I loved this video! I am drawn to silly armies from a gameplay perspective especially...orks in 40k and skaven in AOS come to mind. It has been so hard to push myself to paint them so bright and colourful in the past, but I love seeing examples of exactly that to help normalise in my mind that it is a valid way to paint anything. Organic models like tyranids and seraphon are really fun to paint, with so many colour options to pick from, although I am THE worst at picking a scheme.

8:10 You're right about that, I'm planning on copying him when I get around to painting mine.
Now I have a question for you: how many points do you consider an army? 2,000 points was the standard GW army when I started the hobby but my GW has scaled down so many gaming tables that the manager wants people playing 1,000 points so games go quicker. There's lots of forces that I don't want to paint 2,000+ points of guys for (like Tau) but I'd happily do a 1,000 point Kroot army.

    • @dicendemons
      @dicendemons  2 місяці тому

In my area most people play 2000 points Games3so that's always my goal but an army could definitely be smaller and still be a "real" army.

I hate elves. I have always hated elves. They are so boring and there is nothing about them I find inspiring. I also own 4K points of kings of war elves. I own 2.5k of AoS elves. 6k points of Aeldari and 3k points of Drukhari. Heck many years ago I had a large high elf army for warmaster. I have no idea how I always end up with elves. I like dwarfs. I love dwarfs in fact. Yet over the 28 years I have been in this hobby I have only ever owned one dwarf army and that was about twenty years ago for warhammer fantasy. I think this video has given me the kick to give in and start an army of the new 40K squats. I still have no idea how I keep ending up with elves. (In fairness I do like the 40K elf races and their minis and the community for Drukhari in particular is amazing. The nicest people play the most evil factions).
