A Sturgeon River Gorge Summer Solstice

  • The Sturgeon River runs its course through the Ottawa National Forest not far from my late wife's family farm, and the river cuts a gorge which is set with a jewel of Michigan's Upper Peninsula -- Sturgeon River Falls. The gorge is a federal wilderness area now, and it's trailhead is well marked, just across the sandy gravel road from a small dirt parking area. On this day, three other vehicles were already parked, one a US Forest Service truck. Another car pulled in after me -- a pretty busy day at the Gorge for a Tuesday. But the other folks, including two FS trail workers, were on their way out, and the guys who arrived when I did beat me to the bottom and then departed shortly after I arrived, so I had the falls to myself for most of my recording. A glorious place on a glorious day. To even come close to the enveloping roar of the falls, turn your volume way up on your viewing device.

    A wonderful, wild and impressive landscape, which reminds me of childhood times watching Grizzly Adams in the American wilderness. Love the sound of the rushing, gushing water.

      It is, indeed, a wild and wonderful place. Fortunately no grizzlies -- but the local black bears add their own excitement sometimes. Thanks so much for stopping by for a look and commenting!

    The power of the water, well recorded. Thanks for this glimpse of wilderness. It's something we don't have in the Netherlands

      So glad I can share it with you and others. We have huge tracts of forest here in the Upper Great Lakes region, but little of it is true wilderness -- even if quite wild to the eye. But thankfully we have had some special places, such as the gorge, which has been preserved and limited to foot access.

    What a gorgeous gorge and impressive, natural jewel - infused with even more meaning for you now, Jeff, that's its more entwined with Mary's memory. I'm so glad it was a glorious day for you. All best to you, as always.

    _These are very beautiful impressions, what a nature and a rushing river, you can see how much power the water has, a natural beauty. Also nice that you could enjoy it for you, it is great to look at, thank you for it. Greetings from Germany, Angela_

      So glad you stopped by for a look, Angela. Yes, when the flow is high -- which frequent heavy rains kept high longer into summer than usual this year -- the power cannot be ignored. It reinvigorates those who let it. Thanks so much for your nice comment. I hope you are having a good summer in Germany.

      _The summer is not so great I Germany, however I already had a great summer time in Spain for many weeks :)) Now I have to work again, I hope on a beautiful late summer. The ravine and the nature area are very beautiful and certainly a place full of memories for you ... Best regards, Angela_

    The water level looks high! I miss this place!

      Yes, fairly high -- though not as high as I was expecting what with all the rain that has been streaming though the U.P. and northern Wisconsin. A special place my wife introduced me to -- practically her back yard as a kid.

    One of my favorite places! Even with the increase in tourism we didn't see anyone else the entire couple hours we spent there

    I camped at that very site one year earlier. Hell of a hike down into the gorge.

    A very peaceful stretch of water! I camp near a river like that, you have to move a huge distance to hear yourself think (or sleep). Looks a nice place though. Cheers, Steve.

      White water, white noise! Makes it hard to hear the bears coming up behind you, lol.

    Some volume of water there Jeff a force to be reckon`d with to be sure, thought the forestry guy would have got his chainsaw out and cleared the trail though, a truly beautiful area and a pleasure to watch mate, ATB George.

      The Forest Service crew were a lightly equipped pair of strapping young guys. I chatted with them and mentioned the several deadfalls, and the one carrying a felling ax nodded to his partner and told me with a grin, "he'll be back to take care of those." I presume with a chain saw and other appropriate gear. I made sure to thank them for their trail work -- preemptive appreciation.

    Beautiful! that is some Iron Rich water there very nice

    • @RandomButtonPusher
      @RandomButtonPusher  7 років тому +2

      Iron and swamp vegetation leeching both help create the "tea." It beats some other rivers in the area, such as the Ontonagon, that cut through heavy clay soils and are opaque reddish-brown

      i used to see a lot of iron colored water up in Canada, reminds me of that i love to see it

    Fantastic job of capturing the beauty of the gorge Jeff! I have not been there since the early 1970's but remember the smells created by the mist and trees, very special. I start physical therapy for my back on the 10th to see if I can lesson the pain that has been keeping me from being active. The prostate surgery went well and I'm recovering from that okay, but having that catheter in for two weeks took a toll on my back that I'm struggling to recover from. If by the end of July I don't see improvement I will try acupuncture. I have a follow-up visit with my doctor in Green Bay the end of the month, she is checking my PSA, which should be near zero now. Thank you for the wonderful video! Hope to get out in our kayaks before the cold weather arrives in Autumn. Take care, Ossie

      Well I'm sending good vibes your way. My wife went to Dr. Kerry in Niagra for other reasons, but she's an acupuncturist too. www.radiantnaturalhealthclinic.com/

      Thank you Jeff! Dr. Kerry has all my information for my doctor, Dr. Marjorie Funtanilla, wrote me a prescription for acupuncture in the hopes my Blue Cross insurance might help pay for it, but sadly it don't. I also seen Dr. Kerry give a talk a while ago at our library and I was impressed with her. I'm in a tough spot with this darn back and have been going downhill for the last three years. I eat most meals standing at the kitchen counter for I'm too sore to sit, and I rarely get more than three hours of good sleep in a row. I am back on my exercise bike for 15 minutes at a time with an hour break in between sessions. Just started on July 1st as my perineum was too sore from the prostate surgery until now. Hope you are enjoying this beautiful day!

      Yes, my wife was impressed with Dr. Kerry as well. Best of luck in restoring your back. Having dinner with a friend before watching neighborhood fireworks from the dock. I have a video on my channel of last year's shootout over the lake.

      It's not a long trail to the bottom, but still a workout for me at this point. The North Country Trail, though, runs adjacent to the Sturgeon in this area, and that is technically the longest hiking trail in the U.S., running from eastern New York state to the middle of North Dakota. So plenty of hiking can be done. Glad you enjoyed the video, Mark.

      Hi Jeff, it was a great video. I liked how you held the view. Wow and i thought the AT and the CDT and PCT and so on were some of the longest. You guys have some great country to walk. Peace Jeff and all the best.

    • @RandomButtonPusher
      @RandomButtonPusher  7 років тому +1

      The reason I said "technically" on the NCT is that not all of the mapped route is completed/integrated, though large segments of it are, such as that stretching across Michigan's Upper Peninsula and Wisconsin and into Minnesota, where it integrates with the Superior Hiking Trail before heading west again. A grand dream of a trail. Don't suppose you need to carry bear spray on any of the Wye country trails, lol.

    • @WyeExplorer
      @WyeExplorer 7 років тому +1

      Ha ha, no we don't carry that spray stuff with us Jeff although coming across a human or two can be daunting when seeking solitude. Having said this we are sociable. One day soon I will visit Jeff and walk and hike and say Hi to some of my youtube friends as I do such as your good self. Peace....
