I totally get what he mean when he says that a lot of younger people don't like 90's anime, I love it! because it looks so cool but when I tried to watch "prefect blue" with a friend, she didn't want to watch it because it looked ugly. So sad because there really are some 90's to early 2000 treasure!
@KhronoZ 1182 if you're trying to get into retro anime then I do recommend Trigun
People miss out on classics that way. Mh sister wouldn't watch Higurashi for the same reason (I know it isn't 90's but the animation is offputting for modern anime fans)
Perfect Blue is so gooood
I fucking love old anime. Most of my top fav anime aired in or before 1999. Handrawn anime imo just look, move, and feel a lot better than the digital drawn stuff today (which is not to say the new stuff is terrible). Not to mention the music selection of 80s pop or 90s jazz. I just wish others would give the forgotten old stuff a chance too :’(
I feel the opposite way (I’m 27) I can’t get into new anime. I’m not sure if it’s because anime in general isn’t as entertaining to me as much anymore or if it’s the art style.
I actually watched this when we were 15 with a group of friends. Yes, it was sick but what was more painful to realize was we weren't fazed or disturbed because the abuse portrayed happens in real life.
The fact that I've seen that show before makes me worried feel feelings

Kite was shown on German public TV in an era where censorship and banning of violent media in Germany was at its height. And I vividly remember how icky the abuse scene was. So this being banned comes to me as a surprise. I mean even No Doubt copied Kite for one of their music videos.
Geeze I watched it on german TV when I was around 14/15 on Vox. I even taped it on VHS back in the days.
But it was like 10 years later, that I realized, that the TV Version had most of the sex scenes cut and that a uncut version even existed.
So I was even more surprised, it was (though cut) even shown on TV.

Recruiting, using and training the young and vulnerable to do their biding?
And yes - Sex and sexual abuse is all a part of that. And we should not pretend that it isn't
It tells a grounded and cohesive story. A fucked up one, for sure. But all fucked up elements happen in the real world and that said cursed content is actually usefull and helps with the story being told. Either estabilishing the dephts of depravity this world has or building characters
Also, i really love the 90's anime style. Kinda wish we could bring it back
I fully agree with this statement.
I agree. Art can push boundaries, and anime is never afraid to do so. The beauty of horror, dark fantasy, etc is that is can explore themes like this does by hitting the viewer with it raw in the face. Another example is violence jack. It may be extremely offensive, but a LOT of what happened in the anime is what has happened in warzones after the complete and utter breakdown of a society, which is ultimately the point is it trying to get across.
Except most of the time they never really lean into the actual "message". Most of the time they just focus on the sex and make it look more sexually appealing than it actually is.

Kite is a common name for several predator birds that are graceful, but can also be seen as ruthless and extremely deadly. I would assume this is where the name comes from, not a child's toy known to dive to the ground when you lose control of it :p I'll have to give this a go, as it certainly seems far less offensive than The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and that only received an R rating in the US despite having all of the same scenes.

I rented many movies and series, many of them extremely fucked up or just bizarre. Ninja Scroll or course, Kimera, Key metal idol...as a few examples. "Hey what's this disc called?"
"Oh yeah that's a DVD player."
But... vhs means video home system lol its the machine. Vcr means video cassette recorder aka the thingy you put inside the vhs

DVD player = VHS (video home system)
DVD = VCR (video cassette recorder)
@@enkeii8588a vhs is a vcr, it’s a brand of vcr and became the most popular, so technically the guy in the video is right
Yes, VCR stands for Videocassette Recorder. As in, the thing that records onto a videocassette. The videocassette does not record, the machine does.
And, while, yes, VHS stands for Video Home System, VHS (produced by the brand JVC) is actually a format for videocassette tapes, the other major format being Betamax (produced by Sony). But because Betamax basically became obsolete, nearly all VCRs only play VHS tapes, and nearly all videocassettes are in the VHS format. Hence VHS becoming shorthand for videocassettes as a whole (sort of like how we call facial tissues Kleenex, even though they're not all actually Kleenex brand). This is also why VCRs are sometimes referred to as VHS players.
So, no, VHS is not the machine. It is the tape/videocassette.

I enjoyed the series even with the degenerate scenes because things like that happen in real life. Ignoring it in the media doesn't mean it doesn't happen in the real world. I miss movies and shows that makes me think and feel. If the point is to disgust me and I am, then they did their job.
Ikr, people think if something is disgusting it's bad. Goddamit sometimes that's the point it makes you want to feel and sense the world around you.
The problem maybe that the Woke are so literal minded that they cant see anything but the most literal interpretation of anything.

Another piece of media based on Kite Joey forgot to talk about was the music video of No Doubt for the song "Ex girlfriend".
The video adapted the bathroom brawl and some other minor scenes from the OVA, keeping it, to this date, as a more faithful adaptation of the source than the actual live-action movie.
Kite looks bloody amazing!
Feel like it’s a good example of how story’s need to be told in certain formats, it wouldn’t of worked in 3D CGI animator or told as a film with real actors.
Saw it many moons ago. I wouldn't call Kite H3nt@i, just a very dark old school anime.
At 52 years young I can't believe how much great anime and manga I've consumed.
So many awesome publishers have come and gone.
Having seen Kite: Directors Cut, Kite: Liberator and Mezzo Forte; the 2014 movie is such a sad disappointment. It should never have been made. Legit, Samuel L Jackson is the ONLY good thing about it.
One other thing to add about Mezzo Forte is that it also got a full anime series after the OVAs. Which was also really good. 👍

In times like this, I'm grateful to be born in Latam. I got "kite" recommended by a "Late Show" in 2010.
I do appreciate a good series where there's a point to the violence and sexual content. Having to be in a certain mood for this sort of thing, I probably won't be watching Kite any time soon, but I can't say I'm clutching at my metaphorical pearls either. If anything, I'm kind of surprised that this is so controversial compared to other henti series I've heard about. I've only heard of this OVA in passing (outside of the film, which I did not know was an adaption) but not in the same way as more *ahem* straightforward henti works.
Also, I want Joey's tentacle. Don't take that out of context.
What context?
I would like your comment, but it´s at 69 likes
My cultured self just thinking: Kite is the most banned Henty, seriously???... Damn I see the cultured series, OVA and manga I watch and read maybe ilegal in every part of the universe.
Joey: let's view....Kite
Me: *screams because I actually enjoyed it in high-school*
I think at the time it was also where it reminded me [the animation rather] of my favorite movie Ghost in a Shell. Kite was very good to watch but Sawa's* story was just messed up.
*_I loved Kite_* . And I have to say that the scenes in question are absolutely necessary for the story to not only have the _meaning_ that was intended, but to also carry with it the weight of the emotional impact they had on Sawa. Had the scenes been directed differently so that the content was _implied_ rather than shown in graphic detail, the film would have completely lost the visceral magnitude of the soul-shaping effect of the betrayal and violation that the creators wanted the audience to experience. The scenes weren't gratuitous. The story demanded them. Without them, the impact is lost. It's why R-rated violence is more effective. Imagine a movie like, say, The Departed, or John Wick rated PG-13. They would not have been nearly as strong.
I stumbled across Kite years ago during my regularly scheduled culture studies and was surprised with the quality
"During my regularly scheduled culture studies" lol
🤣
It feels like 90s anime has personality. Of course it had edge, but most things in the 90s did. (Remember Gargoyles and the X-MEN
There are so many reasons you cant recapture that 80s-90s quality, but one big reason a lot of people miss is that, especially for Japan, that time period was when the bubble economy was at its strongest. OVAs tend to mean that they aren't funded by any major corporations or studios, which as you can see with the sheer number of OVAs in that era, it was surprisingly manageable for small groups or individuals to muster enough money to fund their own anime.
Big Chests and Lolis ruined the anime nowadays in my opinion
@@Nietabs Big chests, Loli's, tropes, egocentric journeys and fanservice. Doubly so.
Agree with what you said but once in a while we get some marvelous anime that came out of nowhere & amaze us (Mushoku Tensei) & when that happen we see that it's not that we can't have amazing beautiful animation today, it's that most studios today are lazy or incompetent & that's why we get anime that looks exactly the same, plain, bland, boring, uninspired, the majority are like that but there is always the exceptions to the rule :)
@@SABER_Knight-King The studios aren;t lazy. They are overworked and underpaid. The average animator gets only 3-4 hours of sleep per day. The production commitees are the ones to blame.
I've watched both versions of Kite, the so-called sequel, and knew about the live action version. I was a teenager when I watched it. I can't remember which version I saw first I just remember being deeply disturbed by the director's cut. It certainly has a certain feel to it that gets its message across. I would have to say it's also one of my favorite anime. I did not know it was considered henti. I've also seen Mezzo Forte and it was disturbing too.
Part of me wants to say you don't need those scenes to tell the story of "Kite", but part of me says you don't get the same visceral level of disgust without them. I have to say Im glad the director seems to use those scenes to tell the story rather than be degen material. They aren't drawn out more than they need to be, and there is a reason for them: rather than trying to subtly hint at personalities of the characters, you get a very raw and poignant representation of what their relationship is and who they are, even if the price is having to stomach some pretty f***ing disgusting scenes.
The whole OVA just feels so raw and grounded despite the cartoonish amounts of gore, and just leaves you kinda empty, sad, and tainted; much like how the MCs probably feel though to a lesser degree
I think it depends on how it's shot and what is exposed. Media can convey csa even in an uncomfortable on screen way without showing full nudity plus penitration. If it's supposed to be disgusting, uncomfortable, and convey the mindset and trauma of the victim I understand completely. But even though it's animated and not a real child how far can a scene be pushed before it's just animated cp.
Weebs: What do you mean "controversial" ?!?
When you introduced yourself as "Dr. Plenti-o-Henti", I was drinking my cup of coffee. I must say, I'm glad I held myself together or I would've been paying a broken laptop right now. XD
Fun fact, this anime, and particularly the bathroom assasination scene, inspired the video for No Doubt's Ex-Girlfriend.
I think Kite was a victim of it's quality. It is legitimately amazingly good which put it on the radar of people who were not in the anime niche back in the 90's, and then the subject matter took it down. I can find H stuff before and after Kite came out that are FAR worse in cultured scenes and subject matter but because they are extremely obscure and did not get ported over to the rest of the world and their quality is what you would expect, they flew under the radar. Kite was just too good not to get noticed... and it was the 90's.
Americans were not into anime
The story was so sad. I wanted a happy ending for her.... similar to how Banana Fish ended.
Well then… my soul will be crushed
Happy ending? In anime?
Joey: Sawa's weapon has bullets that explode on impact.
Me: So it's basically a dominator from "Psycho Pass"?
It’s more like the low tech version of the dominator. For one thing it shoots regardless of who’s the target.
I swear Mezzo Forte "delete" scene has stayed with me ever since I seen it way back in 2003. And here come the memories dragging me back to this.

Funny that the first time I saw Kite was on German TV. Which makes me think that the main reason why it might be the most banned is because it's really well known.
We need to get joey to do a live action anime tier list where he ranks all of the Hollywood and Japanese live action series and movie anime adaptions🤩
Man, I never realized this was such a controversial OVA. I remember my brother and I somehow got our mom to buy this for us on VHS when we were like 10-12ish, thinking that all anime was suitable for kids… 😂 Looking back on it now though, I’m glad it was the version without the sexual stuff. 😅

As people once said: "If No Doubt can make a better live-action adaptation of an anime than an actual movie studio, you f*ked up."
For reference: No Doubt - Ex-Girlfriend adapted the bathroom scene.
Never knew that. That's cool as fuck to see after watching Kite. Weebs hiding in plain sight.
I keep forgetting Gwen Stefani is a big weeb and japanophile.
Like, almost her entire LAMB album had some reference to Japan, and most of it's singles that got music videos referencing Harajuku (namely the four japanese girls in her entourage), and one of her videos had a general Gothic Lolita take on Alice in Wonderland
i saw Kite 10 years ago. and it still is the most memorable OVA i've seen. and since ive recently been on a little 90s OVA binge i was thinking of finally rewatching it lately. so yeah, now im definitly going to rewatch it tomorrow
I doubt a single person who watched that movie in theaters even knew it was based on an anime.
Honestly, this video is mind blowing to me. I originally saw KITE without any of the sex scenes, and consider it one of my favorite anime "movies" (both episodes back to back) without ever knowing that there were any sex scenes. I will have to track that old version down now. I could see how these being included into the anime making it much better. I always noticed how the grooming and sexual nature being insinuated.
Nothing is new there when it comes to America banning anime. They even banned a part of Yu-GI-Oh, where these to men came into Kaiba's house. In the original version they had guns. Not in the American version. The guns were missing pointing fingers. That too was the 90's.
Sailor Moon... changing Saturn and Uranus to cousins or how about the WHOLE Sailor Stars season?
@@oh-noe it was just in the 90s, the Karen moms groups had gotten ahold of our media and started convincing everyone to "think of the children" as a way to advocate for censorship, they started censoring everything that was evenly remotely 'for kids' at the time, also, these same groups were (and still are) starkly apposed to firearms and their ownership, the majority of America doesn't agree with these groups but their small minority of voices can overpower the majority when they're given power and that happened a lot in the 90s, and even now they're trying to make a come back.
