- The Specialized Turbo Vado 4.0 is a high-speed, feature-complete, urban electric bike with unique tubular fenders that have flexible extensions and water routing system to keep your legs, back and face dry, integrated lights and a tight modern rack. Available in 6 sizes including high-step and mid-step frame styles with gender-specific saddle and grips, custom tuned 50 mm suspension fork with plenty of adjustment, sturdy thru-axles for improved power transfer and handling at high speed. Specialized TCD display, Mission Control smartphone app syncs with display for GPS readouts and battery optimization, powerful 180mm hydraulic disc brakes in the front and 160mm in the rear. The display is not removable, nor does it have a range estimator, there is no quick release on either wheel or even the seat post, and the battery can be tricky to click in securely.

We bought two of these.... we have been so impressed with them. I have now started commuting to work with it 20 miles daily. Highly recommend!!
You know your stuff SO well. Honestly, I am always impressed with your reviews.
I have this bike and I absolutely love it! Total game changer! Thank you for your review!!
I have a 2017 Vado 5.0. Strangely, the battery would not except a charge this week. The bike would turn on and the motor worked, but the battery would not charge.Software upgrades and a hard reset on the battery did not solve the problem. It looks like specialized is going to warrantee the battery, which is a pleasant surprise after 2 years of ownership. The 5.0 came with a 42 front sprocket, which resulted in Shifting problems. For $50 my local shop upgraded to the 48 tooth sprocket. Now I usually ride in the second gear cruising at 21 mph with no shifting problems. I believe they told the specialized rep, and they may have addressed the rear derailer component of the shifting problem, which was due to an improperly sized derailer for the gear range. This hopefully has been solved for the 4.0 version. Overall I was hoping to get 15,000 miles out of the battery, and only got 3000. I have not seen any other online comments about battery issues and hope this was an isolated event. Again I am very hopeful that specialized covers the cost. Otherwise I was extremely pleased with the bicycle. It really allows me to live vehicle free for a good portion of the year.
You do such a superb job with all your ebike reviews. A thumbs up is now automatic.
Perfect review! I've purchased a Haibike 3 years ago and I bought a Vado two weeks ago.
I purchased these based upon your reviews.
I saw no other comment related to the coasting noise coming from the rear wheel. The Vado is very loud as you coast and it "ratchets". The dealer will have to address that.
Thanks for EXCELLENT REVIEWS! 👍👍
I've had one for just over a year. Specialized GAVE it to me when their techs couldn't figure out the electric problems I was having on my Turbo X. How's that for service? It's a blast, super high end and fun! Get one!
This is my second e-bike , LOVE IT!
I work remotely, but like this bike so much I get dressed up for work and “ pretend” to cycle to work!
My wife and I have these. They are great. We are both in our 50's and they have allowed us to ride through the hills in our neighborhood and take trips to our local reservoir and around town. A little pricey but I expect the price to come down as the popularity of these bikes increases.
Thanks for this review. I'm going to get one for my wife next week....a shop still has one from last year, amazingly.
Your the best when it comes to describing the bike
Even if I had the money to buy something like this, I'd be too scared to lock it up even in my sleepy CCTV camera loaded town center 🤔
I just bought one in Silver. Great review! I did change the tires out for armadillos and added a fancy seat suspension
And how is it doing?
Correction: The blocs screen does not do Bluetooth or connect to misson control app. Specialized forgot to contact customers a long awaited replacement display is now available that gives the Bluetooth they where promised.
Bought mine today! So excited.
And how has it been?
Nice.. I went to the Sunday EbikeStore ebike ride. One of the riders had just bought one of these Turbo Vado. It was her first ride on her new bike. SMILES from ear to ear.. :D
If I would living in the States, that would be my bike of choice.
I just recently purchased a 2020 Vado 4.0 while they were on sale for 3017 plus a 530 rebate on top of that so I went for it. One thing I've noticed is it's overall gearing seems to be pretty low with a 40 tooth chain ring. I live north of Seattle about 20 minutes and live down a long pretty long and steep hill so the gearing is great for climbing but on level ground I max out at a comfortable cadence at just over 20mph and find myself trying to shift into a higher gear. I checked the specs on the Kumo 4.0 and witch has the same rear gearing as the Vado 4.0 but it has the 48 tooth chain ring. Seems odd to me that the Kumo which is more cruiser is higer geared. I would like to raise my gearing some but don't want to giving up too much climbing ability.
I have the 2019 Turbo Vado 4.0. This video has just reminded me how annoying it is that our ones are limited to 15 MPH in the UK. 28 MPH would be epic! There has to be a way to override the nanny software.....
pipsicle Sadly Yes Everyone says they are Free But only in America are we Free: Think how stupid Govt Regulations are : In USA some states require E-Bikers to wear Helmets : Yet teh same state has had no helmet required for Motorcycle Riders for 30 plus Years ??? Bunch of Bureaucrat Morons : *WHY 15 MPH Limit ?* I can go faster then that on a Hybrid Regular Bike
you probably already know by now but yes there is a way lol
Loved the video , watching you from the UK just ordered my specialised ebike really looking forward to riding it 👍
According to Brose's website the "T" motor with the 70nm of torque only goes 25km/h. It's the "TS" motor that has 90nm torque and goes 45km/h.
Surf422 Class 3 on Vado 4 Even Vado 3 in 2019 model
Thanks Court I now know how to reset trip meter on by brand new Vado 3 when I had no idea from the specialised manual!
Problems with my vado screen. Specialized dealer refused warranty because they didn't sell it and rider care didn't understand the terms and conditions apply to all dealers to do warranty.
Ur right that’s why I bought Giant Quick E+. Dealer told me to stay away from Specialized Vado until they fix the display problems
@@natelove187 the Giant just doesn't have the integration that the Vado does!
Great review! I'm sold. Thanks so much
"I don't know if you've heard about display problems from a lot of other manufacturers" That's funny because I've had a bunch of issues with my Turbo Vado BLOKS display not connecting properly to the bike. The shop didn't know what to do and ended up just changing all the wiring out and it has worked since. Granted it hasn't been very wet for a long time now, which is what caused it in the first place. It wouldn't turn on in the wet at all.
Oh and I didn't even mention the whole Mission Control fiasco. The BLOKS display isn't compatible with Mission Control. It was advertised on this channel that it would be, along with through Specialized. Now a couple of years later, they are exhanging the bankrupted BLOKS displays with TCD-W displays. But it hasn't been certified for Europe yet. It's a mess.
@@azgul Specialized and my Toronto bike shop wanted to charge me $600 for the "Upgrade" to the TCD-W. In Canada Specialized won't swap your BLOKS display if it is still working.
@@adamball1740 because Mission Control wasn't marketed as being a part of the product or?
News on my Specialized-venture is that I haven't had my bike for the past 5 weeks. A spoke snapped on my rear wheel and I noted to the local shop that the motor started making weird noises when pedaling. Supposedly they've already changed the motor under warranty, but Specialized has yet to deliver a replacement rear wheel to the shop. After hounding them and asking for my money back if they couldn't provide an estimate 2 weeks ago, I was offered a loaner... I'll never support this awful brand ever again.
This seems like great value. 28 mph and 120 rpm... thats equivilant to the trek super commuter 8s if im not mistaken. Which is like $2-3k more
Put on 2K miles first year , no problems so far . Good to have dealer support for when and if .
Very impressive bike, especially considering the price. I bought last year and am pleased with my choice of R&M Roadster, especially the sub-50 lb weight, but regret not having tried the Specialized bikes. As a life-long, 60 year old rider, both commuting and recreational, on and off road, the attention they've put into the details commendable. I don't often get excited about another e-bike review, but this one is the exception.
BTW, to 'dampen' is to make something moist and to 'damp' is to reduce amplitude. Suspension forks do damping, not dampening. Unless, perhaps, you are riding through a puddle.
Great bike. I went with the izip e3 moda instead because it was over $1000 cheaper with the same motor and 500wh battery.
Since you feel the need to correct someone's use of the English language, let me correct you. Both "damp" and "dampen" can be used to describe making "something slightly wet" and "reduce frequency or amplitude".
@@thejeffstevens It's damping, not dampening, when used to mean a reduction in or isolation from vibration and this was the context in which the word was used.
Nice review. Ordered and waiting for delivery.
Does this bike cost $3,500? Also, I hope you feel comfortable with being boldly enthusiastic about a bike that you like, without coming across like you're selling it to us. You do a very good job of being diplomatic, so you've created a trust with your audience/subscribers. Being upfront to say you are charging them a fee shows further transparency. Perhaps you could always list a few negatives about any bike and even honestly say if you can't find any negatives. Thx!
On the website, you will see the pros along with the cons for any given bike review
I've been looking to buy and ebike and I really enjoyed your video and all the info on the e-bike thank you!
Great review!
Nicely done, Court.
This is another excellent review!!
I have the vado 3.0 and I love it!
I also have vado 3.0 and vado 5.0 i also like my bikes
ted tedsen is there a massive difference between the 3 and 5 in your experience?
I have the Vado 3.0, did they ever fix the Bluetooth issue for the Mission Control app? Do you use the Mission Control app? That's one of the main selling points of the bike.
drop bars, rigid fork and carbon frame/fork please Specialized... PLEASE!!!
My local Specialized dealer said it's coming. Fingers crossed. Having said that, the new Cannondale Synapse Neo looks to be a very nice bike.
@@84imreplica the Neo is a road bike. Not the same thing.
Not sure why Specialized didn't do a bit more work on the battery attachment - having to bang it in place does not give me much faith.
You don't need to bang it in place, but you can't just place it either. You have to put it in like they showed and then push up top by the lock until it clicks. Then it's secured.
@@ctgrey02 Thanks. They seemed to show it had to be banged in place.
how long will the battery last, riding on smooth roads about 5000 miles a year .900 bucks for replacement battery wow .
Anthony Kelly you would have to verify the charge cycles on this battery. Some higher quality batteries have anywhere from 600 to 800 charge cycles. 5000 miles is roughly around 170 charge cycles a year. What’s the your daily average?
not more than 14 miles a day, i stopped cycling 2 years ago lower back pain ,hills kill me thats the reason i'm on the look out for a good ebike.i don't do group cycling or touring anymore just to much hard work.i was thinking of going with bafang motor for my Thorn audax if only i had the money.
@@michaele.7003 I was told the battery has 300 cycles - so don't charge it unless you need to.
Is there a trick to removing the battery? I replayed the video 10 times
and I can not remove my Vado 6.0 battery. My key seems to operate like it does
in the video and even had someone help lift when I turned the key.
That is the E bike I want. Thank you for your Helpful videos.
Mine stopped working .light goes on. Panel is black. Motor won't run
I really wish you would talk about the Specialized Mission Control BLOKS fiasco. There is a lot of hype and misinformation still online about the old obsolete BLOKS equipped products supporting Mission Control. I purchased a 2018 Vado 3.0 expecting that feature to eventually be working only to find out I have to pay for an upgrade. When you have the CEO of Specialized making a public apology about the botched Vado launch and the customers still have to shoulder the burden of paying to fix the bikes themselves there is something seriously wrong here.
The mission control ap works fine for me
Hey Court!! Great review thanks. Can you do a review on the Priority Embark? It’s seems very future ready with the Gates Belt Drive etc.
I'm feeling you to electric bikes are only just bought an electric bike over the weekend and I'm so far loving it it is a XDS E- Volve
You don't cover the drive system. Is it cadence, torque or cadence with some smart tech?
Excellent detailed information. If one were to install slightly wider tires, what width might you think is maximum capacity with the existing fenders installed? Thank you!
...if only Specialized worried more about having the 2019 TURBO LEVO in stock for 2019 instead of running out of them BEFORE the cycling season even starts.
It is in stock, which Levo are you referring to?
Love the speed pedelecs, any differences compared to the older versions?
Love your thorough reviews.. is it possible to review a few more cross and road bikes too .. thanks
Good reviews were very interesting. Any chance you could review the Haibike adventr 6.0 as this is the bike I am thinking of purchasing
How do you feel this compares to the VanMoof S3 for city riding?
Considering this bike has many nice features, but it also about 1.5K more expensive.
just WOW really cool bike!
Are 4.0 and 5.0 speec pedelecs ( 45km/h)? I can't even find that info on their website...
How many miles does it goes ? Per charge
Thanks for the nice review!
Are you going to test the YT Decoy? I really want to know about the bike...
These are like the Turbo Levo for road riding.
Hey guys. I enjoy your videos. I am planning an ebike trip to either the Camino De Santiago, or Vienna Austria as my base to go for day trips I have a felt E285. My question is which would you recommend. I won’t hold you guys responsible for ideas. Just looking for thoughts. My idea is to buy an Ebike there. Bike recommendations?
I am setting a budget of 2000$.
You're right. QR skewers are an invitation for someone to take your wheels. I use the Delta or PinHead locking skewers that have proprietary tools to remove the wheel. The HexLok are really really expensive. If you only had one place to lock it would be reasonable, but when you have 2 wheels, 1 seat post, etc..at $20plus per magnetic pieces that block the allan bolt. That gets really expensive.
This is kind of like the Yamaha Cross Connect. I think I’d rather have the Yamaha for $500 less. I’m sure that both are excellent all-around bikes.
I like your choice of locations in NW DC to review these bikes. That castle-looking object in the background is some kind of Cold War era communications tower, I believe. The ground at Fort Reno there is the highest land elevation in Washington. By the way, the nearby Rock Creek Park area is great for bicycle riding.
The Yamaha is cheaper because it is 10 mph slower.
I am looking at the 4.0 and 5.0. Is it worth the $1,600 difference for the 5.0?
I wondered the same thing.... did you eventually get the 5.0? I got the 4.0 a couple months ago
What size is that bike? I'm right between M and L, don't know which fits best for me... Thanx!
great looking bike but man the price made for the Rich im thinking.
How does the shock feel over potholes and bad roads?
I'm looking for something with superb comfortable seating. Fast and reliable luxury bicycle if you will.. Any suggestions?
@@SCORP1ONF1RE I found it.
Vintage electric bicycle comp
What happens if you break the battery?
Well, fine, the fender is great, but does it come with a less maintenance dependent transmission. I'm off derailleur completely for the future (age catching up). Suspended seat is a must as well. The color is awfull, but the design is beautiful.
It also comes in 3 different colors. I think carbon black liquid silver is the best one. I'm not a fan of that maroon color either.
@12:58 SO he is claiming that REMOVABLE DISPLAYS ARE A PROBLEM? Has Sam ever confirmed that?
Should I buy a 2022 Vado 4.0 for 6000 CAD?
Does the 2017 ver has the same engine?
What's range like, and max pedal assist in watts?
What is that light the bike shop gentleman have on his helmet?
Is it bossible to connect with garmin fenix to see speed wats, candence?
I really appreciate the hill climb.
Does anybody know if this particular bike supports tubeless set up?
NEVER EVER BUY Specialized e-bike. I bougth a Specialized Turbo S, I think in 2015, so it's not that old. Now the rear drive has a mechanical problem. Went to the dealer they replied that it's an old bike and cannot be repaired, and there are no more spare parts. WHAT, this was a 5000 Euro bike. And now it's ready for the scrap yard ??, a 5000 Euro bike within a couple of years. First of all not very sustainable and very envirionmental unfriendly and towards customers ........ What a crap brand.
What’s the transparent and universal fee cost
HOW MUCH
HOW LONG THE BATTERY LAST AND IS IT WORTH THE MONEY 💰
5 years if you charge twice a week
Just bought a 2020 Vardo 4.0 and battery is cutting out at 17mph? I live in the USA. Suppost to be 28mph. Any suggestions
Trade it in for a Bulls EVO 4
Try taking it back to the dealer.. I rode the bull first and it is garbage compared to the vado
I wonder if you can order stingray handle bars on this.
No throttle?
Hi guys I'm seriously thinking about changing my haibike tyres the schwalbe super moto x tyres are really awful in the wet and or traversing cobbled stones in concrete. Sadly there's not much of choice in the 2.4 inch width. Cheers
I bought the Vado 4.0 2020 in europe (belgium) and the bike has a speed limit of 25km/h (20mph). What is the reason for that
gripare eu law has introduced two categories for e-bikes. 25km/h (15mph) which is classified as a pedal cycle, so in most countries this allows cycling on shared paths and with out license or insurance. The other category is 45km/h (28mph) this in most countries is going to be classified as a moped, so you won’t be aloud to ride shared paths and will need license and insurance. Now I believe the Specialized Vado is available in both varieties in Europe.
@@martinhoy4632 Is it possible to get the vado 4.0 with (20mph) is the US. I want to be able to do bike paths and shared paths.
Karen English good question I believe the US base model is set to do 20mph which to me makes a lot of sense. Here in Europe we’re not so lucky. If we fancy more the 15mph then we need a licence plate and insurance.
Is it possible to make de europe version drive 28mp/h? Its the same bike with the same motor.
gripare there must be a way. But not through any dealers. And from what I have seen the simple method is convincing the system the wheel are different size. Either moving the speed sensor or by using a bluetooth app like ’light blue’ and changing the settings.
"tune out that rebound"? "wider ten sprocket cassette"? what?
2 things I don’t like about the bike. First, you can’t switch from kph to mph. Second, The wires blocking the headlights is annoying
K think you can switch. Watch the 5.0 video. I think it shows you how to switch
Lol.You can switch it to mph.
Really. That's what zip ties are for
Your left hand is flashing in and out of just about every frame. It gives people a headache after awhile.
72Nm? my vado 3.0 and 5.0 has 90Nm at peak on max load
ted tedsen this motor should be 90.
This is too Expensive!
Battery replacement alone is $900 bucks ?
No its not
@@bikeaddictions4037 it is very expensive.
It's only 3.5k for a great bike
Go to Walmart
@@bikeaddictions4037 In the the world of E-Bike, it may be considered as priced at regular market value. However, "Just Sayin" makes a point we can all understand. You can go survey 100 people of the general public from ppl at the movie theater, to the shopping mall, the beach, school, ppl just out on the street, go knocking on random doors and asking, you name it. I bet 99% to 100 % will say it is too expensive. I rest my case.
3.5k can get you a decent motorbike or used car how ironic that little car on the hill can go faster than the 3.5k bike
Hi Court, if this is more of a road bike, you should do it more on pavement. While i like to see it can do some grass, not the whole video please
We already know it's a road bike designed primarily for the street, so he would have told us if it didn't work well on pavement. I feel in his trying to keep the video short, he did us the best service by showing how the bike handles rougher terrain, not just asphalt.
I've rarely seen an e bike in London. 15 mph needs a chocolate tea pot brain for purchasing needs.
your right imagine adding 10kg to your bike and going the same speed as a regular bike quite stupid then adding having to charge it and the though of it dying forever in a downpour of rain. Dont buy a ebike even carrera bike have cut out problems imagine how stupid it would be to have to chain a bike up and go home with the battery. i ride up hills to work every day in the uk to work and back 5 miles each way. and i have a car and motorbike license but ebikes a just plain stupid.
