During that “can’t stop it when I’m in my zone” part in Jesus H Macy, the ascending guitar part touches a part of my brain that only shoegaze type music touches. I love that this band is a crazy amalgamation of every genre of rock music. They never stay on one style for very long but they manage to make their songs a rollercoaster.
I remember really hating this record when it first came out. It was such a stark contrast to what they had done up to this point. Your point about the songwriting being way more straightforward was something I severely overlooked at the time. This album really grew on me and the jiggler and turn of the lights pt2 are some of my favorite DGD songs. I will say for someone who hates DGD rapping you were vibing out to that rap part on Demo Team Andy 👀. Another great review, thank you for nerding out like this. Where were you when I needed you in 2014 when this album came out 😂
The rap parts used to annoy me too but they clicked as just another tool they use to make the songs stand out, like they have jon and tillian to cover vocals but they can add another element w the rap parts.

Exactly right on the rant at the end of doom and gloom. I couldnt feel tilian back when this released. Looking back at Instant Gratification thru Mothership after all this time, it's clear how incredible their Tillian discography is during those 3 albums. Ending to Doom just hits so profoundly. Rarely is Jon serious, but that "perfect day to quit" line is just such a forceful message.

This fkn album slaps so hard even for the more straight forwrd vibe. Pour a bourbon and put your best head phones on and just vibe to this one. Its top 3 for me. Im watching all these reactions out of order. Started with JJ, then Instant Grat, now here. Afterburner next then will go back to the earlier albums. Fun time hanging out with you so far sir.
Its funny, because i first started out with the Instant Gratification album, and like a couple songs from Kurt, but now i fkin LOVE Jonny out of the 3. Don't get me wrong though, i love all 3 lol
Some of the demos that Tilian did with Saosin and Emarosa are on UA-cam if you are curious about them. They are super interesting to hear, just imagining alternate universes where he joined those bands lol
“I wanna love you but this house ain’t built for two” is so relatable. Jon Mess gets some criticism for his odd lyrics, but he has a pretty cool way of succinctly and stating things sometimes. It’s impactful.

Death of the Robot With Human Hair is my favorite DGD song. That stomp part is massive. It can stand up to nearly any stomp part from a hardcore band. If I ever saw them play it live, I’m running across the pit side to side like I’m running the ropes in a wrestling ring. Think of some of the greatest hxc stomp parts: “Bitter And Then Some” by Converge, “Hello Uncertainty” by The Carrier, a lot of joints by MyChildren MyBride.. Death Of The Robot’s stomp alone places DGD in MY hardcore hall of fame. The HXC purists might hate what I’m saying here but like I said… DGD ain’t gonna stand on one sound for a long time but they’re gonna make it epic while they’re there.
As I’m finishing this video… I’ll say this: DGD has two different fan bases. Millennials and Gen Z. I, like many of the millenial fans, love Downtown Battle Mountain up to Acceptance Speech. The Gen Z crowd loves the albums following this one, except for Afterburner. Afterburner feels like DGD’s nod to their older fan base. I loved Afterburner. Can’t wait to see your reaction to that one.
found dgd is 2018 and they hands down are my favorite band of all time ever since. Not sure how i feel about tillian leaving but they're still dgd as long as will, jon, and matt are there.

You should really check out hardcore DGD aka Secret Band next only 3 albums and I feel have nearly the same sound progression as DGD

The raspyness is do to age, smoking and drinking more than likely. Tillian did go to rehab not to long ago so its not too surprising.
