30+ years with 911 ownership and I will say the 991.1 especially the 991.2 are basically bulletproof generations of the 911. This is especially impressive considering the high performance nature of the vehicle. It isn’t until you start owning other high end performance vehicles does this point drive home how good Porsche engineered this particular 911 variant.

I had the break squeal problem. I changed rear discs and put in Textar pads, with built in noise harmoniser. These pads are about £40 more then standard, but that stopped the problem.

Mine is a 2017 991.2 Carrera. Water pump failed at 24,000 miles--7 days after the warranty expired(!) We made a goodwill appeal to Porsche USA and they covered all but $100 USD of the repair (this is my third Porsche. I guess that actually counts for something). Thank you Porsche USA. Research on rennlist shows that a low mileage water pump failure is not uncommon with the 991.2, especially in the 2017 model year. Apparently, there was an issue with a pump seal, which was "improved" in later 2018 cars. Repairs are said to use the upgraded pump.

Driver 81 - sorry I didn't clarify. The music itself isn't bad and I know you turn it down when you're talking but the level it's at when you are talking is a little loud still. Made it hard for me to understand you sometimes.

@@alsatch_ I absolutely and most definitely second Josh Costa on that one. many youtubers do the same mistake adding awful annoying music in the background. It's completely superfluous, and distracts rather than add to the experience. I'm assuming most people watch the videos to learn something, not to listen to annoying EDM, so you can loose that background "noise" all together. Other than that, the things that broke on your 911 wasn't really broken. just things that annoyed, you and they all have simple fixes.

I have a 981 Boxster S. Bought it in early 2019 with 102'000 kms on the clock, now at 128'000 kms, the only that went wrong was one of the bolts on the exhaust manifold worked its way loose and fell off. Apparently, it's worth checking/torquing them when servicing the car.

  • @Indyfinnswim
    @Indyfinnswim 6 років тому +1

2014 991 S: one of the 2 fans in the front that feed the cabin broke. It make a loud noise. I read reports of this. It needed to be replaced CPO covered that. The pistons on the rear boot no longer kept the lid up when I wanted to add oil or cool the engine at the track. CPO, and a rear parking sensor malfunctioned and needed to be replaced. All that being said, I love my 991.1 S

I can confirm about the AC sensor failure and it was linked to the other problems where the whole instrument clusters in the dashboard lost electrical power and everything inside including the AC stopped working although the car is still running. It took a few weeks for the porsche service center to figure out the problem. The problem was found on the gateway control module unit powering the instrument clusters and the AC controls. So the module was replaced and I'm on my second day of driving the car and have not found the fault re-occurring.

Only issue I've had is those solenoid changeover valves that you mentioned at the start (no heat). Besides the HVAC heat controller, they use these in 5 or 6 other places. I had one fail for the heat, exactly like you described, and another fail for the PSE, which leaves it stuck in the open/loud position. If you read the Internet forums, this is a VERY common 991 issue.

Change over valves. I had 2 different ones replaced under warranty, they are a very common failure if you look on the forums. Another thing I had was the door panes (door cards) separated at the top. They were replaced under warranty also. Besides that I just had rattles that I tracked down and fixed.
This was on a 991.1 Carrera S PDK. I loved the car but was a bit concerned owning it out of warranty so I sold it.

I watched this video only now in Nov 2021. My 2017 991.2 had a water pump issue under warranty. Also the coolant reservoir cracked and was leaking some coolant. The last thing was a squeak from the left rear of the car which turned out to be a strut bushing that needed some grease. One last thing-not the fault of the car- was that a rat chewed two wiring harnesses in the car which resulted in the car being in the shop for 4-5 months and a $30,000 repair bill which was luckily covered by insurance. I have since gone to great lengths to rat proof my garage!

No 7 Regarding brake Squeal: This could be caused by glazing on the brake pad which occurs when brakes dont get worked very hard, ie driven at slow speed. Solution would be to get some speed up 60/70 mph (check your rear mirror) and press the brake nice and firmly until car comes to a complete stop, keep doing this a few times, this should clear the glazing, alternativately, you could remove the brake pads and give them a light scrub with a fine sandpaper.

The b-pillar and c-pillars on my 991 both had rattles. The trim pieces can be removed pretty easily with a little care, and when thy are, you will discover metal clips, plastic on plastic friction points, and all manner of noise inducing things. My advice - buy felt tape and soft insulating foam. With patience and diligence, I have eliminated many noises. And each time I’ve found new ones! Good luck!

    2. High pitch sound from the Burmester / Navi - replaced the unit not happened again
    3. Seats did not react to the pre-set buttons, or going back when opening car - rest by moving seat all the way front/back

I have a 991.2 carrera S with 24000 miles . Bought Porsche approved thank god. I have replaced rear coil springs ( cracked), air con pipe work( leak), new water pump and pipe work, new air oil separator, new turbo oil system, new turbo’s. New vacuum lines for brakes. All covered under warranty, basically got a new car!. I would not have one with Porsche warranty. I didn’t ask what the repairs would have cost but they were working on the car for 2 weeks so at least 60 hours at £150 per hour plus the parts cost . The turbos alone are 4k each . Love the car still though and will gladly pay £1200 for the Porsche warranty😂

A serious issue that many owners of the 2012 & 2013 Porsche cars is the failed glue on door side panels. Apparently there was an issue with a batch of glue at the factory and as a consequence the door panels become detached and raise up. Porsche is well aware of this issue but has not been willing to rectify the problem if it is beyond the warranty period, I’m currently trying to find contacts where I can further escalate the issue as they are quoting $5k to replace both panels.

Top of the door panel has a tendency to delaminate and bulge upward. Happens on 991's with the standard interior (i.e. without full leather on the doors). It's been reported on both 991.1 and 991.2 models and unfortunately the entire door panel needs to be replaced (around 3500$ USD)

I'm on my 5th Porsche, and am now for the first time, at the mercy of the questionable intelligence of the Porsche engineers. The brakes squeal so loud you can hear them over a city block away. Tried all the suggestions on you tube, no luck. Now, I'm going to start over: new rotors pads hardware, etc. Definitely ruins the driving experience. I made the mistake of leaving the key in the ignition-dead battery. So dead i can't open the hood. Tried to put power to the little pullout thingy on the fusebox, no luck. Now, I've got to pull the left front tire off, and remove the inner fender well and pull on a little cable. Hope I can find it. I wish I had access to the child genius who thought up this insane gimmick. I've had it. Over 20 years without a single problem with 4 other Porsches, and now this. Anyone want to buy a slightly used Carrera S ?

    Dude.
    1. There is detailed video by Porsche about the brake squeal, cause, dynamics and yup you’re done. If you want brakes that behave like Porsche brakes with their composites and design you get squeals on some cars. Of course they will try and improve but they won’t put lack of noise over performance. Live with it. We all do.
    2. If you ask any senior Porsche technician they will tell you to get your car to 60mph or higher and mash the brakes like a deer is exactly 100 feet in front of you. Do that three times and the squeal goes away, for a while...

    • @alsatch_
      @alsatch_  6 років тому

Cheers Alexandre, I do recall seeing the video yes. I did take it to Porsche technician, and they never offered any advice about losing the squeal, they just told me they would need to take the braking system apart and do a full check which would not be covered under the warranty.
They can make all the excuses they like, its just not acceptable in my opinion. Don't get the brake squeal on other high end cars.

I just came across this informative video. I've had my 991.1 (C4S) for 3 years (2015 CPO purchased Spring 2017 with 9K miles) and have had a few of the problems listed.
All were covered and fixed under warranty.
    They were as follows:
    1. Heater Blower Resistor Failure
    2. Active Engine Mount Failure
    3. Brake Squeal, still occurs, usually at very low speeds when parallel parking, but not constant.
    4. High Level Brake Light Failure, I believe it has to do with the wire harness of the rear wing which can fail due to the rear spoiler wing motion.
    5. Air Box Valve Failure, No Warning Indicator, I noticed a "Low Humming Sound" usually in Sport Mode. It was inspected and I was informed that 1 of the valves in the airbox failed.
    6. Radio Head Unit Failure, vehicle sat for 3 weeks and on start up the head unit, though there was power, would not play any audio through the radio, bluetooth, CD, or ipod.
I Love Mine and I hope there won't be too many others, but a German Car is exactly that, A German Car.

I've noticed that the engine seems to almost rattle on its mounts when I shift in lower gears before wringing the engine out (as you would in traffic). I was told it's normal but I will say it's odd. I also get a lot of sounds that I'd describe as flexing. It's not a rattle, it's more like kinda squeeking sounds. It's tough to describe. I'm also suspicious that the stereo isn't calibrated or not all the speakers are working. It's a loud car but still... Bose should be ashamed.

Centric Brake Pads for Porsche 991 /911! No noise, totally took the squeak away in my 2012.5 991 S Cab. Also very low dust. I have almost 10K on them and the dealership says they are still at 80%. Hard to believe. And they are cheap.

8 year period? "Will break"? Click bait title on info that's really too vague to be of much use. Manufacturers typically address bugs, which occur with greater frequency when a new model is introduced. Tpically, bugs affect limited production years, and hear neither specific model years affected, nor TSBs are given...Crap. My 991.2 has over 11K miles, and I don't have any of these issues. What year car did you own?

For starters, I've been a Porsche fan since I was about eight years old. I've been to the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart twice, I've been to the Porsche Automuseum Helmut Pfeifhofer in Gmünd in Kärnten, Austria twice, to the original factory where they built the first 356 in the late 40s just up the road from there, and to the summer residence of Porsche in Zell am See, Austria. So yes, I am more than just an enthusiast.
BUT I am disappointed with the used 2015 991 Carrera 4 GTS that I bought from my local Porsche dealer in 2018. It might be used, but it only had 157 kms on it (yes, 97 miles) when it was 3y and 1m old. A great car and heavily optioned. So why is it with a mere 4692 kms (2915 miles) I have a coolant leak from the plastic pipe at the thermostat housing. I've seen many cases on the net about this leak. Really, no big deal since I perform maintenance on everything from motorcycles to cars to aircraft. But I would expect that at 10 years and 200,000 kms.
Really Porsche! Here is a car that cost at least 6 times the price of a Toyota and Honda that I used to own and you cannot get it right. And by the way, those Toyota and Honda that I bought new were over 14 years old each when I sold them to friends and I never had an issue. It is a good thing I still have my "air cooled" 1995 Porsche 911 (993), a real Porsche!

    Have a 2015 Porsche 911 turbo
At 15,700 miles the PADM light came on which stands for Porsche active dynamic motor mounts were bad. Common problem and can happen at anytime any mileage. Cost from dealer 5,480 plus 250.00 diagnostic fee so about 5,700 total. Porsche expects its good customers to pay for this. He talks about this in his Video. Problem number 3 in his video. How pathetic is it to have this go out on a 15k mileage car. Reliable I don’t think so. My 30 year old Ferrari has been more dependable than this car honestly. Called Porsche USA 7 times and would not help with this or return my calls. This happens on many of their cars and they still use these mounts.

Brake squeal is not a fault per-se. As mentioned it's down to build up on brake surfaces. I have an Aston Martin Carbon edition with carbon brakes and it happens on that. A series of hard braking (3-4 times) from 50/60mph will solve for a while, but be prepared to do it again as the build up will return. Go buy a Porsche and enjoy.

My big surprise at 28k miles and one for the dealer was a complete VTS (vehicle tracking system) shut down rendering the car non startable! It would start for second or two like normal but then shut off - as designed to do if it were stolen. Had to be towed and ~ $3000 repair bill. Not a fun experience and frustrating knowing Porsche put it in the car so THEY could track it - for instance bought in Canada and resold in Russia against company policy. They would not replace out of warranty.

This could be the "luckiest" Porsche owner on the planet with only 9 complaints. When you consider all the different electrical components, sensors, relays, solenoids etc. that a so cheaply and poorly made on these cars, this guy got off very easy. Add to that the mechanical problems that go wrong with all German cars and it is a recipe for disaster. The average person thinks they are getting the finest engineering available today and in truth, it is some of the worst...AND MOST EXPENSIVE TO FIX when things go wrong. Some people do get off without a major drain to their bank account but if you keep these cars, you will eventually learn what so many others have learned. You can choose to believe the advertising or do your homework. You can also pick any part that you might have to replace and compare the cost of replacing that part to most other cars. If spending money doesn't bother you, enjoy your car while you can.

Re the rattling battery cover, you are not fitting it correctly. The rubber gasket that seals the front boot should be peeled back gently where it touches, and allowed to overlap the plastic battery cover. That's how they come from the factory and I have never had a problem.
Re the brake squeal, I had a Cayman S (987) that suffered extreme brake squeal. I got the same stupid answer that it is normal (I have had lot's of stupid answers from Porsche dealerships). I tried everything re braking and technique to cure it and avoid it without success. But that was one of 5 Porsche's I have owned and there was no problem with the other 4. I live in a city where Porsche's are ridiculously common and I do not hear brake squeal everywhere. So yes it is a fault. To be fair, the Porsche dealership did solve the problem in the end by their mechanic crashing my car and writing it off while it was in for its first service.

I heard only one minor thing that actually broke for you (#1). Everything mentioned is you either not understanding how the car works (normal behavior and a reason for it) or just here-say. Just because one person had a failure or you read some whining on forums, doesn't mean every car will have this happen. Your one failure is actually normal...it's quit often all new cars have at least 1-2 minor things fail the first year after normal driving/breaking in then everything else is rock solid for 10-15 years. All cars have or develop rattles unfortunately (new or old)...if you can't tolerate this, just don't own a car.

A car that was produced that has amazing reliability and I've never heard of bore scoring: Toyota 1.6, 1.8, 3.5 engines. Honda B series 1.6, 1.8, 2.2 engines and Porsche Air Cooled 993s. I can go on all day. No matter where I check it seems that the 996, 997, and 991 are all at risk from bore scoring. And the repair is ultra expensive. LN Engineering and F6I are all $30K for a basic engine rebuild. No thanks. Hard Pass.

Poor Redge....you are obviously drinking the German Kool Aid....The Alfa Giulia and Stelvio, which in Quadrifoglio version have set the fastest lap times at Nurburgring (smoking 911's...not my opinion...facts...look it up), have nothing to do with FCA....they were developed off an all new Ferrari engineered platform (Giorgio platform) ....class best chassis, engine, steering , suspension, etc, etc ,etc....The word you're looking for is "build" quality ....I guess you've never been in a 911 that had rattling sounds coming from under the front hood plastic shroud or the "A" and "C" pillars because they all suffer from this....but, if you're drinking the Kool Aid, you accept it because you are blind to the facts.....Legendary marque of high performance...Vitorio Jano, Carlo Chitti, Ascari, Fangio, Nuvolari....Yikes, Porsche has Ferdinand Peich and Hitler....Hmmm, I'll pass....FORZA ALFA BABY !!!
