Anonymous donor pays $1K power bill for disconnected Ontario senior

  • For more than two months, Toronto senior Maxine Stirling Dawe couldn’t make toast, turn on the lights, or power a fan or air conditioner in her one-bedroom rental apartment.
For the 74-year-old retiree, the absence of electricity made for some uncomfortable and potentially dangerous days and nights during a scorching heat wave.
Stirling Dawe, who lives alone, had fallen behind on her Toronto Hydro bill after she says she helped support a son with extra needs. In April, she received a disconnection notice. In early May, the utility cut off her service.
After seeing and reading about Stirling Dawe’s plight, a kind-hearted Global News viewer who wants to remain anonymous sent an email to a reporter and said she would pay the bill so the Toronto senior could get her electricity turned back on as soon as possible. And she did.
Global's Sean O'Shea has the details.

Are you freaking kidding? Seniors, by far, get the largest share of tax dollars of any group in Canada. Between pensions and healthcare, seniors are chewing up over 60% of Canada's budget. In contrast newcomers get less that 0.01% of the budget, the smallest share of tax dollars of any group in Canada.

And how does an anonymous donor pay a bill for which they don’t know the account information. Are you saying that an employee answered a phone and accepted a payment that went to her name without giving the person on the phone any of the account information by accidental slip? And when the donor paid it how did they pay it especially if it was over the phone without getting her account information that would appear later. I mean I’ve never had a donor pay a bill for me obviously but I do know that there’s something very sketchy about that because I know how your country works. And how old is this so-called news btw for it is posted at a time that you would be sure to post it late.

Seems like this has been a trend for Toronto Hydro. Just two weeks ago Toronto Hydro disconnected my mom’s electricity for $500, but heres the thing. We paid a partial payment the previous week, then Toronto Hydro tried calling my mom at work the day they cut it off. She couldn’t answer the phone so they immediately disconnected the power to our house. This happened around 12, my mom ended up paying the full bill off that moment. Toronto hydro tried to remotely get it back but failed twice, in that attempt they blew the whole system connected to our house which they were not aware of. They sent someone to our house and he looked at it, couldn’t fix it and drove off, without informing my mom or anything. Furious at 8pm we called back demanding someone to come restore our power, they were hesitant to restore our power although my mom paid off the full balance. They didn’t know what to do, eventually someone came around 10pm and informed us that the meter was blown because of the rep trying to restore power back remotely. We were charged $500 for the after hours fee on top of the $500 we paid to Toronto Hydro. Yes, Toronto Hydro has started to screw over the poor and save the rich. Mind you ever rep I spoke to knew little to no English or comprehension. Just goes to show what a shitshow this city, country and government is. Congratulations you money gougers, you’re picking on a single mother whos struggling to keep up with bills, as for myself? I wish I could help, IF I COULD FIND A JOB IN MY OWN COUNTRY. Shameless Toronto Hydro, government, and cowards who do this to struggling people.
