I think you touched on an important point- you're actually using that piece of gear in its intended role, and can offer some good insight. I think the mindset is shifting from the UA-cam of 2018-2023 to a more savvy viewer who is able to tell the difference between fluff and good information. Its the delivery of that information which is the tricky part.

It’s like you’ve been doing this a while or something. I do like the phrase “Savvy Viewer”. Thats a concept Scorsese hits on a lot. Give the audience the puzzle pieces and let them put it together on their own.
I myself am a savvy viewer who sees right through your “electrician” facade. You got soft hands fedora boy.

For what it's worth - your 907x 100c video had some gems of analysis in there that none of the other channels covered, because you've been using the 50c for the past 3 years, and haven't just been shooting a review unit for 2 weeks.

Not a youtuber or film maker myself but it feels to me that at some point everyone here on the platform has to decide to either make the stuff they want to make or trying to please the algorithm for "success". For someone to find a way to do both at the same time is rare .... very, very rare. And almost always the success came second. So I think you are making the right call in just doing it the way you want to do it.

Keep going!!! I was stoked to see such a big brand supporting a smaller channel. It sucks we have to rely on the algorithm to reach people these days. Keep putting your heart into it and continue to be yourself! Keep it simple I like how you’re not like all the other gimmicky channels. Love seeing behind the scenes of your shoots and camera set ups.

Be you. Everything else doesn’t matter.
Comparison, among other things, can steal our joy.
Caring too much about anything other than what makes us happy when it comes to making art is a big waste of time. Did Ansel Adams care about what anyone else thought? No. He just went out and made pictures because he liked to do so.

Great stuff, man. I loved your insight and desire to make stuff on a professional level, especially actual filmmaking. I'm a film student and I get frustrated quite often how the trend is for Cinematography, camera, and gear. I'm a gear head so I love rigging and stuff but I'd love to more people to just make actual good films and short films with intelligent intent and knowledge. So many youtubers in the "filmmaking" space on UA-cam and Instagram are amateurs who only know what they've learned from influencers. I also love Wandering DP!! I love channels that offer legit insight in the film industry. So I love watching him, Spencer Sakurai, Lucille Forsyth, and somewhat Mark Bone, Vuhlandes, and Danny Gevirtz too. I often really like Danny Gevirtz's Cinematographer buddy too [forgetting his name but he shot Danny's feature and has helped out with that Bose headphone spec ad]. People like Matti Haapoja and other influencers tend to annoy me since it feels like they're riding off the film industry and gear hype for clout. And don't even get me started with the Instagram reel creators who call themselves "filmmakers" for montages with pretty colorgrading and basically no story. I know I have done the same stuff but I wanna strive to be better and more intentional but I want others to be too. I know a lot of it comes down to the fact they haven't had a film school education or been legitimately in the film industry long enough to actually know the ins and outs like Wandering DP does. But I think those creators should be more realistic with what their making. And a lot of videographers and music video filmmakers have a UA-cam space. The stuff they do is an art but sometimes they err into the narrative filmmaking space and convulute it all for those that are wanting to make actual narrative films with strong stories. I think it's cool to do bts for those small gags and scenes like you mentioned but I think the creator needs to be transparent by making it clear that they are practicing Cinematography, directing, lighting, or whatever with the video/short film they're making. Not everything short film or scene deserves to be considered awesome on its own. It's journey in learning filmmaking. Just like art, it requires practice in doodling (lighting, Cinematography, etc.) to learn how to make masterpieces. But the doodles themselves are rarely ever masterpieces in themselves.

I have been running my Animation channel here on youtube since 2009. I have seen the algorithm go through waves of changes and it seems like right now shorts are the things that blow up a channel. I have also had moments where a video I worked months on (animation takes a lot of time) and much lower quality shit post flies past me in terms of performance. It is just the nature of the beast. I use UA-cam as a hobby and a space to experiment. Even though I technically make some money from my videos, I usually spend more money on the videos themselves.
So yeah I think if you want to be rewarded on UA-cam for hard work, it just isn't the platform for that and never really has been.

This is how I feel with anything social media based. You invest time, and some algorithm arbitrarily decides that it’s not going to show your “work” to anyone.
I enjoyed your new (and older) hasselblad vids, and your content!
Keep doing your thing man. I think the key is creating things you enjoy, and feel like you can get behind authentically. The second you create for anyone else’s taste (or an algorithm), you might see an uptick, but you’ll hate having to produce content you aren’t psyched about.
I come from a music background, and it was the same there. You can manage it for a while, but what if that content doesn’t go anywhere? Then you are creating stuff you hate for no one. Better to be happy, and proud of what you produce!
    My two cents anyway.
Definitely love the Wandering DP as well, and I am not a cinematographer, but I find it interesting!

Keep doing your thing, if you're proud of a product then you gotta trudge through the mud a little longer and after a while you'll have a community that wants to follow you along for the ride. I've recently changed how often I post because of it - in time I think you can be as successful as you want to be.
Keep at it dude, chin up soldier!

You're saying that you're not into teaching, but I would purchase your course in a heartbeat!
I was listening to Cal Newport's podcast the other day where he was interviewing Ali Abdaal on his UA-cam career and they touched on doing courses and growing UA-cam channels, and how optimising them for the algorithm just takes the joy out of it. I highly recommend checking that episode out (the pod is called Deep Questions), but in short, they basically came to the conclusion that to make it on UA-cam you have to find a niche and be early to it.
Photography is quite saturated as a subject already - but your channel stands out, you're making art even when you're doing a review, and you always sprinkle in so many great gems or thought nuggets (loved your video on making meaningful art and expanding on Rick Rubin's ideas). Thank you for inspiring us and please keep going, I'm sure your audience will continue growing! Sending you greetings from Scotland!

I stumbled on your channel recently. Over the last few years, I have decided to stop caring about camera specs and started to document my everyday life with my wife and kids. It has been an incredible journey. My coffee UA-cam channel has only 60 subs, and shooting on a Fuji XT-1 for video is awful. I try to ride the line between needing to post on YT and wanting to post. I make content that I enjoy making. It's not high quality but its fun to catalogue my memories. The high quality stuff stays in my paid work. However, now YT is paying and its a nice cherry on top. I will say... the more i put out, the more it attracts the higher level guys that you mentioned. I get to digitally interact with them and it's intriguing.
Your question of should you put more work into YT. In my experience, the more I put out, the more I receive. It's a game to me. The thumbnail and title formula is part of the puzzle. I've got it right a few times. But I recommend just finding your unique way of doing it. That's what will set you apart. The other styles are played out anyways.

I get that you want a video to perform well. The passion and time you put into it, plus you want it to perform well for Hasselblad. Comparison is the worst part about YT for sure, but given the channel size your video was in an uphill battle versus the much bigger channels who also made videos. Plus Although we're passionate about these camera's this is a niche camera and camera's are pretty niche compared to all the niche's on the platform. Your video is at like 1,200 views right now and for a 3.5k sub channel that's pretty damn good. A third of your audience saw that!
I loved it, cause it was you - authentic. Not forced. Stick with that. Build an audience off of what you're passionate about. If this isn't where you're making your full time income just focus on making the best videos you can that you think will provide the most value. And then take it as a huge compliment that Hasselblad WANTED YOU to make a video.
