Help! I found a yellow slider in the bottom of my 9ft chlorinated pool..I believe she was dropped by a bird as she was the size of a nickel.. I've got 3 different tanks one heated for the cooler months, one I bring her onto the back porch in to get sunshine & one I put her in when I'm cleaning both out. She's now 14months still a bit smaller than a silver dollar..here's my trouble she can't seem to get swimming down pat..she steps on her rocks & stretches as far as she can but, inevitably will wind up floating on the top all limbs out looking exhausted. I have 0% clue how to help her..she likes her tablets but, hates crill, dried tiny shrimp & live (turtle approved) plants which is no biggie.. Anyone have tips on her lack there of swimming?? Thanks!! 🐢🙂
@@NuclearSalmon Hi thanks yes, I do keep it shallow where her little head can get above the water.. I've given her a landing spot so she can walk up but, she doesn't get how to use it (?) I'll put her on top & she walks of the side after a few mins back into the water. I've tried several times to fill it just a bit out of her range to encourage a small swim to the surface (I watch, I don't walk away) but, it ends with a tired float & I have to take the water level down..I've wondered too if it's cause from the chlorine or even maybe taken out of her egg to soon. I feel so bad I always think she's so bored not being able to swim around 😔..Thank you for your reply 🐢
Good timing. We saved/hatched a red eared that a crow was about to eat. He doesn’t have a proper setup. Providing heat is the current issue. You’ve been a big help.
Love your videos. I rescued a freshly hatched red eared slider from my yard last month. He had lost an eye some how and the wound had fly strike. I spent 2 hours removing the fly larvae and really didn’t expect him to make it, but with a cold front coming thru I thought “warm and dead” was better than cold and dead. It’s been about six weeks and he is thriving. The wound healed well, he finally started to eat, and his swimming has gotten so strong! His shell even appears to be growing. I had planned to over winter him and release to my dads pond in spring, but with only one eye his depth perception appears affected. Sometimes it takes him several tries before he’s able to grab his food. I have no experience with aquariums or turtles, but I’m learning and making improvements. I’ve found I really enjoy watching him. His name is Wink ;)
I currently own a baby yellow bellied slider and she lives in a stock tank that will soon house a tortoise but she loves it and I live near a creek so I found thing around it (of course I made sure to clean it well) and I put decor in her tub and she loves it and I find he all the time in leaves
Love your videos . Thank you for the extra education on turtle care.. I like the thought of the timers for ppl that need them how ever its not a need. I enjoy the contact with our pets when it's light on and off time
I know you might think my question is silly. Could hatchlings get indigestion? What happened was I took out my hatchling from the tank and fed her in a separate container while I cleaned the tank. When I placed her back after a few hours the feeding machine dropped food in her tank because I forgot to reset it. I think she ate most of the food before I could scoop them out. My hatchling had been defecating so much but the stool was normal. She did not eat for three days after that.
Great video! I love the timer suggestion and they are def. a must have! I have my lights on a VeSync smart plugs so I can control all of them with an app. It saves me so much headaches. I also have my adult common musk in a 40 gallon breeder with an FX4 canister like yours. She does not seem to want to bask anymore though. She used to do it when she was younger but now I never see her up there on the platform.

How do I know if I am feeding my turtle too much. I am giving it 40 floating food sticks morning and night. She is 7 inches and is a yellow belly slider. I have her in a 40 gallon tank filled about half full. Thanks, Sherry
I am sorry if I am sharing too much but I see you have a water heater hanging in your aquarium. the turtles can burn themselves on that heater as it gets really hot. as they are reptiles they won't feel it until it's too late. I have a piece of downspout and drilled holes in it with the heater laying in it. that prevents them to get burned from the heater.

@@TheTurtleGirl okay 😊👍🏻 didn't seen that there was something around the heating part. whenever they lean on it to rest in the water and the heater is on they burn themselves instantly. often they want to be close to the heater for some extra warmth. so a protective cover is essential for them.

I have 3 baby red earred slider turtles for about 6 months in a 50gal tank outside for the spring and summer, and a 10gal tank inside for the winter. I've changed the outside tank twice and the inside tank about 3 times. Just bought 5 guppies today and tonight I only have 2 left. Who would have thought it??? I tried to stop the turtles (names Larry, Curly and Moe) from messing with the guppies with a net, but it did nothing... I'm hoping in the morning I will have any fish...

oh and i was wondering if its ok with you i don't know how much to dechlorinate my turtle tank water, so i was wondering if you could make a video on that.
Hi turtle girl me and my sister have been asking for a southern painted turtle for Christmas (preferably a male) we have been watching all of your videos to learn to take care of the turtle and we have decided sand flooring some rocks and wood around with a above tank basking area getting the same heat and uvb lights as you use for Hokus tank (also we think Hoku is adorable) we are thinking of getting a 40 gallon tank for the turtle, how often would you feed the southern painted turtle and what type and size of a filter we should use thanks so much for the help :)
that's so awesome! i have some videos on filtration on my channel. And like I said here, I try to shoot for a filter rated for 2-3x the size of the tank. I like canister filters best :)
What (brand) lights do you use? I have been having trouble with my lights in that they keep burning out on me quickly. I got a new UVB and heat lamp in august and it’s december and the heat lamp stopped working. Or is it normal to have to change lightbulbs this quickly? I feel like I am changing lightbulbs unusually frequently.
There are some issues about using uvb lighting, uvb desert ray and uvb tropical ray. Desert ray provides higher uvb than tropical ray. Which one your recomend for RES?
do you have any recommendations to buy a turtle from. i’ve been wanting one for 3 years and my parents can’t find a local shop and all the sites we have found we can’t buy due to covid.
Great advice, as always. One thing that I would add: a GFCI adapter. Setting up gallons of water and plugging-in pumps and heaters and lighting... well, that could be shocking indeed. Equip your system with a GFCI so any mishap will blow a simple breaker rather than zapping you or your turtles and fish. It doesn't happen often; but when it does, it's tragic!
My turtles Pepper and Mango won’t eat in a separate container and refuse to use the basking area. They are both still young, will they grow out of this?
So I have a question I have a red eared slider and I have the same basking spot that u do. What I noticed though is that the grate on the top isn't big enough to fit 2 light domes on. And uvb doesn't penetrate thru plastic so please tell me what u do about that. Currently I have a uvb light that's a long tube, made by Zilla. I have it placed over the water because of the fact it won't penetrate thru plastic. Do u have a solution or do u feel it's ok for the uvb to be over top the water rather then the basking spot?!
Thats a great question Danielle! Its true that the effectiveness of uvb is greatly reduced by glass and plastic. Maybe either have a portion of it over the grate part that isn’t blocked, or do it over the tank and also have a little place inside the tank where the turtle can be near the surface of the water or even get out fully. :)
@@TheTurtleGirl that's a great idea ty! I have a floating platform like u do, but I have liked a 7-8 inch red eared slider, she's a big girl🤣🤣. When I used the floating platform she was never FULLY out of the water cuz she's so big. But it's better then nothing to get her out of the water right under the light.
Hi I have a red eared slider and his basking area is a floating dock. Is it bad that he has one? You recommended a above tank basking area that is why I am wondering. And I also had a question on tank heater. I was wondering if you need a tank heater 24/7? What if it’s summer and your house is warm? Would the water heater still need to be on ?
As long as the turtle doesnt sink it, can get completely and its big enough for him to move around a bit then thats fine. I just prefer above tank basking areas because you can fill the tank up more with those typically.
tank heaters auto shut off when the preset temp is met, it turns back on if the water temp dips below the set temp. basking areas are entirely up to you, it doesnt have to be above tank, but it does provide more room for the turtle to roam giving it options.
Hi, love your vids, but, one question, the double filter rule, do you mean like, per hour? Example: Like if I have a 40 gallon aquarium and I get a filter that cleans 120 gallons per hour, is that good?
Hi, I have a question! My parents are moving into a new house that uses soft water. I’ve been looking everywhere and im not sure if i should continue going to the store to buy drinking water gallons and instead use soft water. Soft water def feels different and i just want to know if its safe to use. I know people recommend using the chlorine remover, but is soft water okay to use and how do i make it okay for my turtle so i dont have to keep going to the store? Please lmk!
You absolutely can't use tap water at all unless using a water conditioner, so I hope you were planning on that. Maybe you could get an RODI unit to help with the water

oh and i was wondering if its ok with you i don't know how much to dechlorinate my turtle tank water, so i was wondering if you could make a video on that.
Omg! I didn't know these even existed haaha tysm for telling me!
Lol! Thanks for watching!
@@TheTurtleGirl Np i luv ur vidss!
@@TheTurtleGirl thanks so much
Thank you I am adopting a baby pink sideneck in a few weeks
awesome!
Which one your recomend for RES?
it kind of depends on the distance that you put between the basking area and the light. There are some diagrams online if you google it :)
do you have any recommendations to buy a turtle from. i’ve been wanting one for 3 years and my parents can’t find a local shop and all the sites we have found we can’t buy due to covid.
They are both still young, will they grow out of this?
sometimes it takes a little extra conditioning and work to get them started using those things. wish you the best of luck!
@@TheTurtleGirl thanks I will give it a go.
Hi
I have a red eared slider and his basking area is a floating dock.
Ok thank you 🐢!
Getting close to 100k!! So close let’s do it!
so close!
My gaw this helped me A LOT 😅
i'm glad!
Hi, love your vids, but, one question, the double filter rule, do you mean like, per hour? Example: Like if I have a 40 gallon aquarium and I get a filter that cleans 120 gallons per hour, is that good?
Can they live with snails 🐌?
Yes
Hi, I have a question! My parents are moving into a new house that uses soft water. I’ve been looking everywhere and im not sure if i should continue going to the store to buy drinking water gallons and instead use soft water. Soft water def feels different and i just want to know if its safe to use. I know people recommend using the chlorine remover, but is soft water okay to use and how do i make it okay for my turtle so i dont have to keep going to the store? Please lmk!
You absolutely can't use tap water at all unless using a water conditioner, so I hope you were planning on that. Maybe you could get an RODI unit to help with the water
Hey turtle girl I was wondering what turtle is Hoko
Diamondback terrapin!
What kind of water do you use in your tanks?? I've been using gallon distilled water and it is draining my bank account!
I have a viking ship in my map tank. Is that natural? Lol.

I suppose thats a fair point!
No thermometer / heat gun ? 😶.
Oooooh thats a really good one. I suppose that could be added to the heat category
I can figure out why my tank always smells my filter is 3x
You don't need to have a uvv bulb if you are keeping your turtle in sunlight
Sure! Like in an outdoor predator proofed pond or something.
UVB doesnt penetrate thru glass windows, so unless you are taking your turtle out for fresh air and sun
new video plssss!!!!!!!!
Is it normal for my turtle to eat it’s own poop?
It must need more vitamins of some kid mix up the food types it may help
Even though this is a late response
