CHARLIE CRAVEN PICKS FIVE FLIES FOR SEPTEMBER ~ Five Flies for September 2022 with Charlie Craven

- September is a month of transition. Days are getting shorter. The colors are changing. Temperatures are theoretically dropping (word on the street is that next week we're going to get a break from these unseasonably warm temps). With these shifts, comes blue-winged olives, streamers, and continued productive hopper-dropper fishing. For many of us around the shop, it's our favorite time of year.
In this month's episode, host Ivan Orsic and co-host Tanner Smith welcomed our LORD - LORD CHARLIE CRAVEN to the studio to talk about his flies, presentations, inspirations, theories and the like for the month of September and beyond.
As always, we answer a couple of commenter questions about rigging, bug choice, and fishing techniques. If you have a question about October fishing - leave a comment down below on the UA-cam video. NEXT MONTH, our special guest will be Courtney Despos, so bring your best questions for our Director of Education. If we pick yours, you'll WIN a Trouts Prize Pack - including prizes from Rising Fish and Umpqua!
For the month of September, the Five Flies are available at our Denver location and online.

“You’re watching your fly and it just flies away” had me laughing so hard. 2 min into the video, this gonna be a good one!
Charlie F-ing Craven. Best 5 flies this year by far guy's. You need to get Pat Dorsey and Greg Garcia next.
This is an instant classic. Love Craven.
“Just talking to a couple of king soopers guys right here”
Ivan alway has some golden comment that no one catches 😂
You guys are crushing it on the videos! Nice work Ivan and Tanner, very well done and very entertaining.
Keep up the good work!

I am quite excited for this one
I'm fishing the Two-bit Hooker this weekend after watching this. Thanks for the FYI. And yes, please do a future vid on San Juan Worms. Cheers!
This was a great vid. Thanks.
I now know why I can never find the fly I want in the shop. Thanks Tanner!
2 day fishing class for October/ late fall? streamer setups? leader setups? fishing soft hackles for big caddis? go!
Just getting into the sport. Thanks for the info it really helps. Shoutout to Andrew at the Frisco store.
For October Five Flies-- I'm not very confident with nymphing and catch far fewer fish (compared with dry/dropper rigs). I think my problem is obtaining the correct drift. What are your keys to a good drift? Do you prefer to use weighted flies? What are your strategies for using weight? How do you set up your flies for 2 or 3 fly nymph rigs (lead vs trailing flies)? What are the keys to indicator adjustments? And definitely Cholula! The guys need to try Marie Sharp's (from Belize)!
Blake, we chose your question for the October episode, shoot Ivan an email at Ivan@troutsflyfishing.com and we'll get your prize pack out to you!
Epic!!!!!
Great Episode Guys.
October Question: How do you know the best streamer fishing technique for a given water (dead drift, swing, downstream retrieve, etc)? Can that be determined by water type or do you just try them all until something works? Thanks!
Let’s Go!!!!!!
Love this episode! Question for October: As we move into the cooler months, bringing lower temps and water levels along with crystal clear water…do you have any tips for fighting and landing fish when lighter tippet is required on our Colorado tailwaters? Thanks! Love the show!
We chose your question for the October episode, shoot Ivan an email at Ivan@troutsflyfishing.com and we'll get your prize pack out to you!
For October being closer to winter, should retrieves generally be more aggressive or less aggressive!?
Lord of the Flies
Since October is a time for spawning fish what is a good fly to use on larger trout in smaller rivers?
When fishing a 3 fly nymph rig, does it matter what position you fish a pupae pattern? Middle or end?
When water is low and clear (like now) and I'm missing more than my share of hookups, is it because my drift is taking the fly out of the lane the fish is expecting or are they spitting it before i set the hook or do I just suck at catching fish on dry flies? Love the show but I miss the "back of the truck" version from last season.
GOAT!
For October: As weather is cooling down and bugs becoming less frequent, do you still hit any still waters in the mountains or do you move to more exclusively river fishing at this point?
Nice
When dry fly fishing on faster currents how can you tell the difference between a refusal due to drag on the fly or the the wrong fly entirely?
What is a good pattern for my home river for Smallmouth in southern Ohio ?
I wish I had asked how many of his flies Charlie thinks are stuck in trees right now?
I have a new baby, so my fishing window has been a couple of hours on the evening. Not a lot of time, I find. What would Courtney's strategy be if she only had a couple of hours to fish in the evening?
Let's see it's September! Think the 5 flys should have been all dries !!! Pitch those nymphs !!!!
A small light or red humpy in front of a small parachute adams cant be stopped anywhere they eat on top
I’m enjoying your show. My question is when your fishing the two bit hooker what dry are you using. What size is the dry and how long is the tippet that you attached the nymph? Thanks my name is Mike Zobrist
Usually fish the Two Bit under a Charlie Boy Hopper or a Fat Angie, very often about 36” down….that long dropper lets the fly get down much deeper than the usual 18” rig. Flies don’t hang straight down, usually there’s a bit of an angle that effectively shortens your dropper depth. Hope that helps.
Garage inc flies…lord Craven!
Nice segment, but you need a sound engineer. Couldn't hear Charlie for the last 20 min of your cast.....
Hey muh Lords, Great video other than that BS about olive streamers not working.
October Q: I was wondering if Bonita Fish are in fact large?
Great question this month, Jakob. We'll take it under consideration.
Can you please give away a bottle of Aspen aged rye?!
cure it!
