FIVE FLIES FOR JANUARY 2023 with ZEKE HERSH

  • It's JANUARY and that means midges are going to be the primary fare for trout throughout the Colorado Rockies. For those of us who are looking to avoid seasonal depression, it should be noted that we have turned the corner from losing sunlight to gaining sunlight. That's right! Days are getting longer as we progress through January and into the spring.
While midges will be the primary food this month, fish can still be had on attractors, blue-winged olives, eggs, and streamers when conditions are right.
In this month's episode, host Ivan Orsic and co-host Tanner Smith welcome Trouts Frisco's own Zeke Hersh into the studio to talk about flies, presentations, rigging, and the like for the month of January and beyond.
Next month, our good friend Garrison Doctor, an Umpqua Signature Designer and co-founder of RepYourWater, will be joining us in the studio. As always, we answer a couple of commenter questions about rigging, bug choice, fishing techniques, or maybe a little more of a backstory on this video ( pCnS70BYAB...) of him wrangling a dandy of a brown trout out of a hole in the ground. If you have a question about February or anything RepYourWater - leave a comment down below on the UA-cam video. If we pick yours, you'll WIN a Trouts Prize Pack - including prizes from Rising Fish and Umpqua!
For the month of January, the Five Flies are available at our Denver location and online.

When using a euro nymphing set up, what is the best way to attatche leader to fly line, with still being able to change out leader easily? I tied a nail knot, but when I wanted to switch to a different diameter leader.. I had to snip n retie my nail knot. Is there a better way? Snip but section of leader and tie from there? (May caise more bumps when going thru guides). Leave thr loop to loop? Or just make more money and buy spare spools? Thanks for all your insight and advice.

Wade fishing for pike right after ice-off. When does it typically happen and why is shallow water pike the best?

There's always anglers up early on the tailwaters at Deckers. Is there a significance in success being early versus when it warms up.. What's more affective during this time of the month if you're up that early. Size, color or having does having a specific run help.

Where do you put the weight on your rig? If it's a beaded fly, do you put that on your first fly or last? Would you put splitshot between flies?
    Thanks guys

Do you have any tips for tying tiny flies onto tippet while you are on the water? Is the secret just to not and have your nymph rigs pre rigged in a warm home? Also what is your lower limit on fly size? Finally in you ropinion do you think that the fly size is more important or tippet size especially in the colorado tailwaters we all enjoy?

February question. Does anyone use battery operated socks to keep your feet warm? I see that simms sells a boot foot wader that might be warmer. Explain why you would or would not use the boot foot wader? I can keep my body and hands warm but i get cold toes after 3-4 hours. Tom Bonnot.

    February question:
With the Mothers Day Caddis hatch approaching on the Ark, I wanted to tie up some "free swimming" caddis patterns. I have read that caddis are active swimmers in the water (which I did not know) but I could not find any good patterns specifically for free swimming caddis. Can you explain a bit of the life cycle of caddis as well as some must have aspects for a free swimming caddis imitation? Thanks!
