I got my 23 GX 460 Premium 3 weeks ago and it still does not feel real.
If you have any doubt about getting one, I promise you that you must forget about it and just buy one! It’s out of this world.
    Few things:
For better offroading just get a Premium or Premium plus (non luxury) with the 18” wheels and consider just upgrading the tires. I don’t understand why the offroad package is only available on the Luxury trim, but also gives bigger 20” wheels. any GX offroader/ overlanders delete the air suspension and at MAX has 18” wheels anyway.
If you have the second row “bench”, the GX can fit 7 people. I intentionally did not want the captains chairs as I make far better use with the full second row, and also one note is that those fold-out cup holders as shown seem to break a lot amongst the owner’s feedback. $75 a piece.
Second row captains chairs would be one thing if it were a minivan or something with a huge third row seat like an expedition. But the GX has a smaller third row and is not used a LOT by 95% of the owners, so I personally don’t see the appeal to get jipped one spot for someone to sit in the second row. But sooo many people ONLY WANT the captains chairs… To each their own I suppose.
The “barn door”… it’s a love it or hate it. There is no in between that I’ve ever noticed. However if you are torn about it, heres some things that may possibly help. When you are loading groceries or whatever, you can rest the shopping cart on the inside of the door, instead of your bumper/ the beautiful paint. You can also lock the barn door in place (its on the lower strut) so it won’t open more or close on you if its windy or a weird incline/ decline. When parked in the garage, you won’t have to worry ever about the door smacking the garage door (pulled IN) or the back wall (backed in) of your garage. YOU can control how much you open it, versus a typical hatch that may fling open and smack into something. That barn door is SOLID! Its very well built. And theres 2 little black buttons by the handle that lock or unlock the vehicle so you don’t have to fumble with your key to open it. Hit the lower button, it’s unlocked, then open the barn door! It having this barn door is one big reason I wanted to buy one. Nothing else (thats good at least) has this.
Please understand that the GX is a very old school power train… Which is a GOOD THING! Out of any luxury SUV you can buy, this one is a dying relic in terms of technology and advancements. It doesn’t exist here, compared to how advanced and complicated new modern engines are everywhere else. So the fact that this is simply a port-injected, V8, with a six speed, is as simple as you can get for the final year 2023, and that is another one my many reasons why I bought mine, and why you should absolutely buy one! I’ve spoken to many Lexus master techs / mechanics and none have ever seen one of these fail (outside of user error/ the OWNER’s fault).
Everyone mentions and or laughs at its 301 horsepower. Nobody talks about its 330 pound feet or torque and high final drive gear. Are you worried about this SUV getting out of its own way? It is NOT a problem. Just put the pedal down and you’ll be smiling and laughing every time when you feel that power and hear that V8 grumble. It’s not built for insane power at all, but it has more than I would ever need.
I average about 16 in town and 22 on the highway… Its not great but its not bad considering how much bang for buck and capabilities you get with a GX.
Most video reviews talk about how capable these are such as offroading and space, as they should… not many talk about how NICE AND SMOOTH these are to drive. It’s so luxurious. Its so comfortable, its so quiet as mentioned. Its a complete understatement… It irons the bumps. Inside there’s plenty of cool things to use and you’ll never be bored. Its very maneuverable. Maybe it’s the fact that I’m still in the honeymoon stage, but this vehicle drives and moves around better and easier than my 2019 RAV4 that I had before this.
If this doesn’t sell you, then I don’t know what will… but the Premium is right at $59,000 and Premium plus is 60 or 61 flat. My Premium had every option and some “accessory” options built into it when I was offered it, so it was 60 grand flat. if it makes you feel ANY BETTER, a 2006 Lincoln Navigator with the monochrome and elite package was $62,000. The 06 Escalade Platinum was $70,000. Mind you this is 17 years ago! You do NOT want to know what that is converted to today’s money. Compared to the GX, those things were cheap plastic JUNK. 60 grand for a FULLY LOADED SUV is STEAL. Yes, the GX offers a “base” model on the website at 57 grand. 4 dealerships I spoke to have seen a grand total of 3 in the last 8 years. Nobody wants to lose a ton of very important options that are even MORE important for your time of ownership and resale value, over a difference of barely 3 grand. Because of the current market and the way things are, You are getting a loaded Premium, or Premium Plus, or a Loaded Luxury. The GX as a whole comes one way. Everyone gets the Full-time AWD and 4x4 HI & LO functions with center diff lock. Navigation, sunroof. Triple beam LED headlights (these are AWESOME!) etc. whether you want it or not.
Since 2010, Lexus hit the nail on the head with the GX. These truly are timeless and elegant machines. I will be very sad and unwelcoming to see its 2024 redo, which we all know the simplified V8 and 6 speed are going away. Which will make it cost more to buy, and far more expensive to own out of warranty, just to temporarily save you a few freakin dollars at the pump. I could probably type 10 more paragraphs as long as this one about how great these things are. I’ve wanted one for five years and I finally got one. I can tell you there’s nothing else that compares. Look at the lower gas mileage as a “reliability tax”… I have seen many of these go 300,000 or 400,000 all original. After 14 years (and even all 03-09 GX 470’s), there are very few complaints about problems. You will feel on top of the world with one of these, I’m telling you. Just buy one if you can! (Yes you may possibly see this comment on other GX videos.)

As you know the GX460 is a Landcruser Prado. The 4th gen 4runner in V8 trim was also the Landcruser Prado. After that gen of 4runner the Prado in the USA could only be had in GX460... Great review 👏 Technically this was the 4th gen V8 4runner but people complained that it was "too much money for a Toyota"... so to Lexus it went...

We had the 2021 GX460 and found out that they were changing it for 2024. There were a couple of things that the wife didn't like that were fixed for 2023, so we traded the 21 for the 23 to keep the v8 as long as possible.

I could also have waited for the 2024 GX, but the loss of the V8’in favor of a twin turbo V6, only 1 mpg improvement and an estimated $5K price increase - I had to go with the 2023 GX and I have zero regrets. Additionally, it will take 2 or 3 years for all the kinks to be worked out for the bee GX model, while the 2023 GX has had all of its major faults corrected!

What didn't she like, if you don't mind sharing? I'd be fine with the 20-21 version or the 22-23 version, so am curious as to what a 2021 owner saw in the 2023 that made it worth the swap.

    • @rich7447
      @rich7447 3 місяці тому

@@broadneydangerfield I don't mind sharing. She didn't like having to go through the infotainment system to adjust the fan speed, and it didn't have car play. She also found the 3rd row manual seats tough to get the seat bottoms out, so we went for the powered 3rd row. Other than those minor issues, she loved the vehicle. The 2021 had 23,000 miles on it, so re-setting to zero was a big bonus for her.

I personally love the big, old school clutch fan on my Tacoma and on the 4Runners. I love hearing it roar to life when I start up my truck and will miss it when they inevitably switch over to electric fans. The electric fans may be better in every way but just like a good ol' big V8, there's an indescribable charm to the loud clutch fans.

Sport is better for rough sharp jolts like offroading or curvy roads. Comfort is on flat straight smooth hwy driving. Its like floating on clouds. Normal is a median of the two. I find that comfort gets sloppy on choppy roads and is unsettled and is amplified by hard tires like E rated offroad tires where its super stiff compound.

I would argue through the 4.6 L V8 is the best cruising motor ever made. It may not be super powerful but it doesn’t need to be. It has the right amount of power for the size and enough power to keep it in year when you hit any kind of incline and I get these terrible over shifting like you get in a turbo.
