Hello, Dave! It's my first video on MOOC and fortunately it was this one. You have explained it very nicely and simply, I must say. Thank you for sharing your years of knowledge within less than five minutes. I've recently enrolled in a great online course and I'm sure I'm gonna use these points you have mentioned in this video. Good day!
MOOC is a new approach to learning. The more we acknowledge and embrace collaborative learning environments the sooner we will be supporting our kids to become innovative and creative thinkers with a purpose in life. Bring it on!!
Thank you Prof. Cormier for all your work about MOOCs, I'm writing my Master's thesis on this subject and this is the only way to thank you and prof. Siemens
My brief experience with MOOCs has been very positive. The professor, curriculum, and especially the students are all valuable. The POV from people around the world increases learning and offers vast perspectives! Thank you. .
Hi Deb Colalillo, which MOOC did you enjoy? I just finished my first online course titled Introduction to Marketing through ubcx. I’d recommend looking into it if you haven’t already. I’m looking for more good online learning and I’m unsure where to look next.
Dave- I found this video while looking up MOOC online and absolutely love it. I work for Pearson Education and we're planning on sharing this video with our faculty communities in order to better education them as to what this new trend in education is. Thanks so much.
Thanks Mr Cormier. Education is a life long learning, I just learned a lot about this video of MOOC. The most important part of this video is reading and sharing, It opened my little eyes very wide.
A MOOC is practically taking a topic a professional in the field gives information about, then branching out and giving your own input and ideas about it.
You can create a MOOC on a blog, too. It doesn't have to cost money to be a MOOC. Moodle and Google sites are free. You just have to pay for the domain and a hosting company. A MOOC does not have to be on a course or learning management system. It's supposed to be "open".
A great presentation. We are developing connectivist-style MOOCs for a vocational education and training project in Australia. As part of my research, I have read extensively the work that you, Messrs Siemens, Downes and Attwell have completed. As a result, we are also developing a generic PLE linked to resources and social media, an open source e-Portfolio, a series of MOOCs, learner guide blog and support structures. I am looking forward to the end product. Thank you for your inspiration.
I couldn't agree more. The terminology is very confusing... no offense taken :) It might be time to try and make an updated version... we're working on a book right now... might do it in time for the publication of that. Thanks for coming back to comment!
I've been using this video for years. It is still great. The content and production are in perfect sync. This video, and the channel it exists on, is an example of what the Video says. Does that make sense?
I hate trying to learn stuff online...I am very hands on and visual, in addition when I ask a question I want an answer I don't want to wait 5 minutes or 5 hours or 5 days for an answer.... by the time I wait for someone to type an answer ill usually have moved on or away from what I was trying to figure out....
Christine, the key here is "open". How can a course management or learning management system be open if teachers cannot create a course on the platform? Coursera is not open to teachers. It costs the universities money to use it. Why don't universities use a free open source system such as MOODLE?
Hello Dave, I would love to learn how to develop this form of training. I have been developing eLearning courses for 19 years, however, I find MOOC courses more effective. Any suggestions for where I can get this training?
Dave, do you believe MOOC will change education? I take online courses now and there is so much comparison between online classes you could take with a college and MOOC.
#cse627 I like this idea of being able to learn through engagement, not just completing assignments. It sounds like a MOOC allows for a lot of free exploration and then to share it...kind of like doing a group research project where you all contribute, but you get to contribute what stands out the most to you...or maybe what is of most value to you as a learner.
Hi great video, any chance you can make it CC via youtube? would really like to embed video but could do with making a txt file of the closed captions. Can only get easily if take into studio or perhaps you could save the closed captions in the description?
Hi Rae thanks, unfortunately our requirement has now past. But we can only use CC licensed content. great video cheers Tim

MOOC might become the creative common for digital scholarship. Life long learning processes becomes the necessity for digital natives and migrants who have the intelligence to connect and to create collaborative Web based Working Space. Good ideas are bringing the people forward and recreate resilience in these years where there will be spent much money for bankers, but nothing for education.
What is this online course all about?Which topics are they focused on?What is the eligibility criterion?Duration of the course? What job in which likely to be engaged in?KINDLY REPLY....
As a student in today's fast- changing world of technology, especially now that we are currently living with the pandemic, do you prefer taking up online courses are the traditional way of education? why and why not?
Great job, explaining what a MOOC is. I will be sharing this with the participants of a workshop I am doing on Technology. Thanks for putting this video together.
Universities today have a linear path to learning and teaching right? You start on freshman orientation day and there's a fairly straight path to graduating with some degree that says you're qualified for some type of career employment. Moocs are a reorientation of that linear idea. Maybe an addition to university style education, not a replacement of it? Myself, I always learned a lot from the students in class that participated in lecture discussions, sometimes more than from the books or lectures themselves. I felt restricted being limited to the assigned books. It's like that ride at Disneyland when I was a kid where you drive a car but its on a rail.
Yoooo my dad's name is David. You're not from Canada are you? Anyway, I've been really interested in self-education, and alternatives to the standard system of education, for a long time. I'm just now coming to a point where I can really start to learn to use those resources, and hopefully develop their infrastructure in the future. Do you have any suggestions for structured free education/information sites and/or material on self-education or speculation on the future of education?
Geschätzte Damen und Herren, im Uni Seminar "lernen und lehren mit Medien" ist es Thema meiner Seminararbeit über sog. V-Mooc`s (Udacity "How to built a StartUp")? Ich kann im Netzt leider überhaupt nichts zum Thema finden und bin dankbar für Tips und Anregungen... Liebe Grüße, Thomas Klaus

It seems to me that "information you're already interested in" is a start place not a confinement. From that start place people are free to follow threads, make new connections, gain new insights, challenge old beliefs, collaborate, co-create, the options are endless.
dave cormier do you know if there are Moocs for specific studies like creating a startup business or better civic governance? Those are two areas I'm interested in. Thanks.
At the end of the video you mention that mooc's are based on the notion that the participant judges weather they were successful in the learning process or not much as they do in the real world. I have a tentative position on this as individuals perceived success at learning is often inflated, or it can come at the detriment (and often oppression) of others. If we begin to set the bar of acquired knowledge, for all elements of life, at the individuals perceived benefit, can this be dangerous?
Whoa there, vilkoos, you might want to recognize the "possibility" that knowledge is emerging and that platforms like MOOCs help facilitate the social construction of knowledge. Things change over time and that's part of the beauty of open, on-line learning. While you're certainly entitled to your opinion, it isn't the be all end all as the tone of your post suggests.
Thanks Dave. I'm on the MIT Learning Creative Learning Course. Could you share with us which pen software you used to make this fab video? and how you got those funky transitions incorporated? I would love to do this too. Thx in advance ;-)
So how well are institutions and learners taking advantage of the knowledge generated by the MOOC? Where is the data/info generated once the MOOC is finished? Yes, this creates the ephemeral value - but can't we somehow store the richness of what was created for future use?
In my work the knowledge generate continues to exist online. As long as we stay out of systems hosted from the centre, the connections created during the community process continue to exist and potentially grow.

I agree with some of this post, not all. In particular I don't agree with Dave Vormier's ideas on distribution: that the ideas and so forth are widely distributed. Conceptually the original MOOC's (your creation, you "own" the term) are polar opposites form what Coursera and Udacity are doing. So what Coursera uses should be labeled as an anti-MOOC.
Dave, I have now taken a couple of MOOC courses and agree with all your points. From a personal perspective, I have written the following paper as an Op Ed assignment of the English Composition course offered by Duke through Coursera. You may find it interesting. It seems this does not allow link. Please contact me if you are interested.
I started in June 2010 and called my project a LMS/CMS. I was surprised when Coursera, EdX got all the press Launched 16 mos later,, guess you have to have 30 million VC before people feel you are worth hearing. World Mentoring Academy has over 700 courses with 170 which align with CLEP, DSST & NYU-SCPS University Credit earning Test Out programs.

hi Dave,
Do you know of any open sources where I can find credible courses for an MBA?
I love the animation in this video. Can you tell me what program you used to create this? And did you use a tablet like wacom?
I love the concept of MOOCs; it take the elitism out of education and put the control into the hands (and heads) of the learners!
Dave - I have found cMOOC defined as being both connectivism and constructivist. Are there two c types?
Sorry, Neal, I just saw the answer to my question. Can you suggest PC based software?

Hello Dave ! Thank you for this great video
I have taken up three and I am thrilled! I can´t believe my eyes. They are great.
what type of courses did you take and will you go for certification or accreditation, Gloria?
I have taken two: Shaping the way we teach english Part I and II, both from the University of Oregon. I go just for certification.

But if I'm correct only a handful of MOOC courses give actual university credits?
So why spend time on them instead of credited courses?

I have a question : What is the clear differences between MOOC & e-learning & D-Learning
