This video needs to be shared. The information is outstanding. I am a beneficiary of edx and I am so blessed to have found this resource. It has transformed my life. There's no way a person like me from a poor country, Liberia, could have afforded the quality of education I receive on edx.
I'm currently in university. I go to my classes and daydream while the professor talks, then I go home and try to teach myself the material. I don't have the attention span to sit and listen to someone lecture me. I think that moving towards a world where people can learn with a pause button is promising.
We shouldn't forget that a lot of MOOC participants aren't usual first semester students but highly educated men and women who already have got one ore more graduations. They're doctors, professors and similar. They know how to learn on their own. The presented techniques may work well if you're able to learn autonomically, but that is not always given.
I agree and I'm also questioning the method that they would use to evaluate the students. If they do it online, then there's a very high chance that students cheat to get the grades that they want, which would eliminate the whole point of this process. The only way I suppose they can evaluate students would be through testing centres that the students can go to for their evaluations.
The point is to make MOOC the new standard of college/university learning. Sit-and-Listen-for-hours is just not working for many people, it is a failing system.
Actually, I totally agree with you on that point, because I've found myself falling asleep in some of my classes. I understand that's what he's trying to address, but we also have to address the flaws to his system if we're to search for a better solution to university/college education.
The fact that learning to 'teach ones self' is not the standard in today's grade schools is highly disturbing to me. You shouldn't need higher education to learn how to learn. I was just lucky enough to be the kind of person who fell into that without the help of grade school. On a similar note, if you experiment with different sources(different books(you'll eventually find a pattern of book styles that help you retain knowledge), MOOCs, professional communities, etc; as I've proposed in a few other replies here, but for different reasons) you can start to feel out your own personal learning style and figure out how to learn autonomously if that's something you currently have trouble with. If you need to be kept in check to stay on course then use the buddy system.

Happy to see I was not the only one who got lost in class because I coudln't take notes fast enough (plus I struggled trying to read the blackboard). In fact, even people with mental disorders can benefit enormously from this, studying feeling calm at home (Social anxiety disorder (SAD), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), ...). I really hope more and more people will learn like this; I love pausing, rewinding, selecting x1.25 most of the time, ... This is priceless. Thank you.

Agree with most of these ideas. BUT (and this is a big but) some subjects lend themselves to this approach more than others AND some students are more self motivated than others!
About self-motivation: I think all students can become self-motivated when they are learning what they want to learn. In this new, self-paced model for education, students will be able to learn WHAT they want WHEN they want to learn it. Of course, there will have to be some minimum requirements. But in this self-paced model, genius will emerge sooner and more often when students have the time and means to discover what they love.
I believe that as more content gets online and as more people turn to the Internet for education, all subjects will find a way to be taught through this tech-powered method. There will always be a need for people---for fellow students, for professors, for TAs---to enrich the experience with discussion and practice problem-solving, and eliminate whatever computer error there might be. But the information can be conveyed without the need for a person to be in the same room.
RutzMac Furthermore about self-motivation, the only thing we have to speak for her view of this is people within the current educational paradigm. There will always be the occasional slacker, but most people won't be slacking willingly. They just have their motivation and creativity crushed by overly rigid school systems.
I'm currently doing an iversity MOOC in astrophysics. It's free to enrol, it's really interesting, and thoroughly enjoyable. I could never afford to pay for an equivalent qualification from a traditional University and because I'm a full-time carer I'm not able to go out to attend lectures and seminars etc.. so studying from home is ideal. MOOCs get a huge thumbs up from me !
The main reason to go to a university remains mostly social. Forming relationships, connections, and discussions. Covid will illuminate just how significant the need for change is...
I completed 3 online courses, and I attend 2 at the moment... It's the best thing I did for myself... And Circuits and electronics with prof.Agarwal was my first course. He was right when he said the students dream about green checkmark :)))

Coursera is already a massive open course hub. There are a lot of good classes, some terrible ones, but a ton of useful and interesting material comes out of that site. Duolingo is also awesome.

I greatly appreciate this presentation of this professor Anant Agarwal because this mode of education system has greatly impacted those who cannot be admitted into the campuses. THANK KTHULHU! The mere thought of how outdated the current method of learning is enrages me to no end. Forcing students to travel for an hour to the lecture hall, sitting your ass off for 2 hours taking notes (ridiculously inefficient method of acquiring information), traveling back home for another hour, before you can finally get the chance to start learning. COMPARE THAT to the information simply being sent via email to spend the time at your comfort learning everything. it is nothing short of being so inefficient to become insulting for the student.

Tenemos el caso de un estudiante que después e haber intentado varias veces un ejercicio obtuvo una marca verde y luego coloco un comentario como este: “Oh dios, como te he extrañado”, refiriéndose a la marca verde, nos sorprende escuchar esto, cuando nos íbamos a imaginar que un estudiante se exprese así de “Tarea”. Mi colega me comenta que la retroalimentación instantánea consiste en enseñar en los momentos de obtener resultado. El curto punto es permitir que ellos construyan, en nuestros laboratorios online, les permitimos construir modelos, y así las computadoras se actualizarán, construir modelos como Legos. La quinta idea, es el aprendizaje puro, aquí usamos foros de discusión, interacción, incluso el Facebook lo usamos para este fin, no como una distracción, sino para ayudar a los estudiantes a aprender. Déjenme contarles una historia, cuando estábamos enseñando a los 155 mil estudiantes, sabíamos que tendrían dudas, así que nos organizamos para poder abrir el fórum 24/7 y nos preguntábamos como lo podríamos hacer, así que en la noche un estudiante de Pakistán hizo una pregunta y mientras yo escribía la respuesta otro estudiante de Egipto le respondió, y antes de que yo termine otro estudiante de USA también ofreció una respuesta, así que me senté fascinado por lo que estaba ocurriendo, y así que toda la noche los estudiantes estaban discutiendo y antes de la 1 de la mañana ellos habían descubierto la respuesta correcta Algo que nos están diciendo, es que los estudiantes esta aprendiendo uno del otro, están aprendiendo al Enseñar. Pero esto no es cosa del futuro, está pasando en nuestros días, en el hoy, por eso estamos aplicando estos pruebas pilotos de educación mezclada. Este modelo lo estamos aplicando en todo el mundo, y esto puede resolver el problema practico de los “CAMO’s”, el problema del negocio, incluso podemos vender todos estos cursos a universidades, así que las universidades pueden darnos los certificados o licencias como profesores y usar todos estos cursos como al siguiente generación de libros de texto y usarlos todo lo que podamos, se convertirán en más herramientas para los maestros. Finalmente me gustarían que Re imaginen conmigo la educación, tendremos que mudarnos de corredores de aprendizaje a espacios online, de libros de texto a Tabletas, de salones construidos de block y cemento a Dormitorios digitales,
If i had a "flipped classroom" through grades 1-10 it would have made school so much less painful for me. Most courses bored me and felt like they were in slow motion, and the few courses where i was interested were disengaging with little practical work or challenge.

Amazing speech Mr Anant. I really believe that education as a whole needs a revolutionary change. The online platform you people have created is one such idea. But we have much more to go. One issue that must be taken into consideration is the employment opportunity using online courses. Many people would happily leave college and study using online platforms, only if it could guarantee employment based on the skill gained during the course.
There is less pressure on MOOC courses for both people: The Student, and the Teacher. And because of that some of MOOC have exceptionnal quality, some even better than the traditional classes. Though MOOC certificates can't replace a degree.
Distance - online- learning provide time flexibility ,multi options & diminish distance to reach out for your goals but still the physical interaction is a core element in our life as we are social creatures .
Put in step by step solutions like chegg for vast amount of different problems we might encounter. Humans learn by pattern and if pattern starts to become clear by doing many repetitions then people get it. The problem with lectures is they just stand there and talk expecting everyone is going to absorb the information like a sponge. We aren't cars in assembly line, I hope universities follow the trend and revolutionize their classrooms.
Most MOOCs are just Education 1.0 put online minus marketable credit. Education 2.0 would involve near constant interactivity, gamification, differentiated pacing and presentational style, and torrent style interpersonal tutoring.
I think the implementation of online courses as a whole needs a huge revamp, especially the ones he talks about, the ones that take place partially in class. I have taken a couple of online courses ay my University, and both of them had terrible examinations thanks to the way you preset your material online vs actual exam. I had to do online assignments/mini quizzes literally for each chapter but when the exams happened in class, the format was different the questions were much more complicated.
It is time for the global to navigate from our old system of learning to this new way of learning of which it will upgrade our skills and ability to used the internet.
What an interesting video about the moocs, personally i love study by this way, I feel like I learn a lot instead when I study with a traditional way i feel like i learn only to 60%. In fact, I learned English by this way with moocs and i'm very happy and proud of my self for that!

The only way I suppose they can evaluate students would be through testing centres that the students can go to for their evaluations.
Every students need to learn how to learn by themselves when they start higher education, whether their courses are MOOCs or traditional ones ;)
The point is to make MOOC the new standard of college/university learning. Sit-and-Listen-for-hours is just not working for many people, it is a failing system.
Actually, I totally agree with you on that point, because I've found myself falling asleep in some of my classes. I understand that's what he's trying to address, but we also have to address the flaws to his system if we're to search for a better solution to university/college education.
The fact that learning to 'teach ones self' is not the standard in today's grade schools is highly disturbing to me. You shouldn't need higher education to learn how to learn. I was just lucky enough to be the kind of person who fell into that without the help of grade school.
On a similar note, if you experiment with different sources(different books(you'll eventually find a pattern of book styles that help you retain knowledge), MOOCs, professional communities, etc; as I've proposed in a few other replies here, but for different reasons) you can start to feel out your own personal learning style and figure out how to learn autonomously if that's something you currently have trouble with. If you need to be kept in check to stay on course then use the buddy system.

Happy to see I was not the only one who got lost in class because I coudln't take notes fast enough (plus I struggled trying to read the blackboard). In fact, even people with mental disorders can benefit enormously from this, studying feeling calm at home (Social anxiety disorder (SAD), Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), ...). I really hope more and more people will learn like this; I love pausing, rewinding, selecting x1.25 most of the time, ... This is priceless. Thank you.

Agree with most of these ideas. BUT (and this is a big but) some subjects lend themselves to this approach more than others AND some students are more self motivated than others!

About self-motivation: I think all students can become self-motivated when they are learning what they want to learn. In this new, self-paced model for education, students will be able to learn WHAT they want WHEN they want to learn it.
Of course, there will have to be some minimum requirements.
But in this self-paced model, genius will emerge sooner and more often when students have the time and means to discover what they love.
I believe that as more content gets online and as more people turn to the Internet for education, all subjects will find a way to be taught through this tech-powered method. There will always be a need for people---for fellow students, for professors, for TAs---to enrich the experience with discussion and practice problem-solving, and eliminate whatever computer error there might be. But the information can be conveyed without the need for a person to be in the same room.

Furthermore about self-motivation, the only thing we have to speak for her view of this is people within the current educational paradigm. There will always be the occasional slacker, but most people won't be slacking willingly. They just have their motivation and creativity crushed by overly rigid school systems.
I'm currently doing an iversity MOOC in astrophysics. It's free to enrol, it's really interesting, and thoroughly enjoyable. I could never afford to pay for an equivalent qualification from a traditional University and because I'm a full-time carer I'm not able to go out to attend lectures and seminars etc.. so studying from home is ideal. MOOCs get a huge thumbs up from me !
The main reason to go to a university remains mostly social. Forming relationships, connections, and discussions. Covid will illuminate just how significant the need for change is...
I completed 3 online courses, and I attend 2 at the moment... It's the best thing I did for myself... And Circuits and electronics with prof.Agarwal was my first course. He was right when he said the students dream about green checkmark :)))

Coursera is already a massive open course hub. There are a lot of good classes, some terrible ones, but a ton of useful and interesting material comes out of that site. Duolingo is also awesome.

THANK KTHULHU! The mere thought of how outdated the current method of learning is enrages me to no end. Forcing students to travel for an hour to the lecture hall, sitting your ass off for 2 hours taking notes (ridiculously inefficient method of acquiring information), traveling back home for another hour, before you can finally get the chance to start learning. COMPARE THAT to the information simply being sent via email to spend the time at your comfort learning everything. it is nothing short of being so inefficient to become insulting for the student.

En último año he visto la invención de nueva palabra, empieza con una “C”, CAMO, Cursos Abiertos Masivos Online; muchas organizaciones están ofreciendo estos cursos alrededor del mundo al por mayor, gratis, cualquier persona con acceso a internet puede participar de estos cursos de excelente universidades y obtener un certificado al final de el.
Ahora, en esta reunión, hoy me gustaría enfocarme en un aspecto diferente de los “CAMO”, estamos tomando lo que estamos aprendiendo de las tecnologías que estamos desarrollando a lo grande y lo estamos aplicando a lo pequeño, para crear un Modelo Mezclado de educación para reinventar, re imaginar lo que se hace en el salón de clases.
Ahora nuestros salones de clases no han cambiado, aquí les presento una foto de un salón de clases de hace 50 años, y ahora un salón actual de clases de una universidad de 3 letras. La educación NO ha cambiado en los últimos 500 años, la última innovación de la educación fue la Imprenta y los libros de texto.
Todo lo que nos rodea ha cambiado, desde establecimientos que atienden la saludos, transporte, todo ha cambiado y es diferente, pero la educación no ha cambiado. Uno de los problemas mas importantes es la accesibilidad
En la siguiente imagen, lo que ven no es un concierto, y la persona que está al frente no es Madona, esta es una clase de una universidad de Nigeria, Ahora, antes de la educación a distancia, por ejemplo los estudiantes en la parte trasera están a más de 200 pies, ellos están tomando clases a “Larga distancia”. Yo creo que podemos transformar la educación, tanto en calidad, escala y accesibilidad atreves de la tecnología.
Por ejemplo EDX, están tratando de transformar la educación a través de las tecnologías online. Al pensar en la educación que no ha cambiado en los últimos 500 años, no podemos reinventarla o administrarla mejor, realmente tenemos que Re imaginárnosla, incluso infraestructura, todo tiene que cambiar. Debemos ir de lecturas en la pizarra, a ejercicios online, videos online, tenemos que ir desde laboratorios interactivos y dar resultados, tenemos que ir desde clases completamente online y salas de interacción, tenemos que cambiar completamente.
Así que como EDX y otras organizaciones, estamos aplicando este tipo de educación través de CAMO’s para incrementar la accesibilidad a la educación, y a lo mejor ha escuchado de este ejemplo, cuando lanzan por primera vez un curso, por ejemplo el de MIT, 155 mil estudiantes de 150 países terminaron este curso, sin ningún presupuesto de Marketing, ahora 155 mil es un gran número muy grande tan grande como en los últimos 150 años de la carrera de MIT. 7200 estudiantes pasaron el curso, este fue un curso difícil; ahora 7200 es un gran numero también, si yo enseñara la carreta de MIT, dos semestres cada año, tendría que enseñar por 40 años antes de poder enseñar a esa cantidad de estudiantes. Pero todos estos números son solo una parte de la historia, así que lo que quiero hacer hoy es discutir el otro aspecto de los libros, tomar otra perspectiva, esto es, tomar las tecnologías grandes y aplicarlo a lo pequeño, para crear un modelo Mezclado de aprendizaje, pero antes de entrar en ese asunto déjenme contarles una historia.
Cuando mi hija cumplió los 13 años y se convirtió en una joven dejo de hablar inglés y comenzó a hablar un nuevo lenguaje, idioma, lo llamo, Teenglish (Ingles jovial), es un lenguaje digital, tiene dos sonidos, un “Mmm”, y el silencio, por ejemplo, “Mi amor, ven a cenar” el papá dice, y la hija responde con un “MMmm”, el padre pregunta, ¿Me escuchaste?, la hija responde con silencio, ¿me puedes escuchar? El padre pregunta de nuevo, y la hija responde nuevamente con un “mm”.
Así que teníamos un pequeño problema con nuestra comunicación, no nos comunicábamos, así que un día tuve una epifanía, le mande un mensaje de texto desde mi celular, y obtuve una respuesta instantánea, pensé que ella se había equivocado, suponiendo que era uno de sus amigos; así que le mande otro mensaje de texto, y ella respondió inmediatamente, pensé que eso era genial, desde ese entonces todo ha sido genial, le mando un mensaje, ella responde y nos comunicamos, todo es grandioso.
Nuestra generación Milenial es diferente, han sido formados de diferente manera, aunque en UA-cam me veo más joven, no soy un milenial, ellos están cómodamente acostumbrados a las tecnologías online, cuando discutimos en los salones de clase, no discutamos, entendamos el tema y apoyémoslo, yo no puedo mensajear como ellos en el celular, la evolución se encargara de eso.
Debemos darle entrada a las tecnologías online, a la generación Milenaria, realmente piensen en crear todas esas tecnologías online y licuen la información en sus vidas. Por ejemplo algo que pueden hacer en lugar de llevarlos a la escuela, meterlos a un salón a las 8 de la mañana, odio cuando las clases empezaban a las 8 de la mañana, porque forzamos a los muchachos a hacer lo mismo, esto es lo pueden hacer, ponerlos a ver videos, resolver ejercicios en sus propios dormitorios, en el comedor, en el baño, el lugar donde sean más creativos, luego entran al salón por mas relaciones impersonales, pueden hablar con sus compañeros, tener discusiones, resolver problemas juntos, trabajar con el profesor, y pedirle al profesor que les resuelva sus dudas, de hecho cuando están en EDX, cuando están en su primer curso de circ. uitos electrónicos esto nos viene pasando muy a menudo
Dos maestros de preparatoria en Mongolia han transformado sus clases, están usando los videos y nuestros ejercicios interactivos con los estudiantes de 15 años trabajando por ellos mismos, llevando los ejercicios a la casa y trabajando en casa, regresa a interactuar con el grupo y realizar algunos ejercicios de laboratorio.

Atreves de los años que este curso se ha impartido ha tenido un porcentaje de egresados, ya que es un curso difícil, cerca del 40- 41% cada semestre, con esta clase mezclada en el último año el fracaso decayó al 9%, así que los resultados pueden ser extremadamente buenos, pero antes de que nos adentremos en este tema me gustaría discutir algunas ideas principales sobre esto, ¿Cuáles son las ideas principales que hacen que todo esto funcione?
Una idea es el aprendizaje Activo, en lugar de que entren a un salón donde se les imparta un libro, los estudiantes tienen lecciones, las lecciones son una serie de videos y de ejercicios interactivos. Los estudiantes verán un video de entre 5 y 7 minutos, seguido de ejercicios interactivos, piense sobre esto como la mejor manera de educar, los educar a través de hacerles preguntas, y esto es lo que llamamos Aprendizaje Activo, el cual fue formulado en los años 70’s por Craik y Lockhart, que mencionaba que el aprendizaje, comprensión y la retención tenía que ver mucho con el proceso mental, los estudiante aprenden mejor cuando interactúan con el material
El siguiente punto es el hecho de que ellos controlen la clase, pueden presionar el botón de encendido cuando ellos quieras, escuchar al profesor cuando ellos quieran, incluso callar al profesor cuando ellos quieran, de tal manera que el proceso de que el alumno se auto eduque puede ayudar mucho.
La tercer idea que quiero comentarles es la retroalimentación instantánea, con la retroalimentación instantánea la computadora analiza los ejercicios, cuando se enseña a 155 mil estudiantes, la computadora lee los ejercicios, puedes incluso ingresar las respuestas de los ejercicios, y los resultados llegaran dos semanas después, incluso podrás haberte olvidado de ellos. Con la retroalimentación instantánea los alumnos pueden saber si lo están haciendo bien o mal tener respuestas instantáneas, hasta poder resolverlo de manera correcta, y así obtener la retroalimentación instantánea. Esta marca verde que ven se ha convertido en uno de los certificados más importantes en EDX, los estudios nos han comprobado que los estudiantes incluso duermen soñando con la marca verde. Tenemos el caso de un estudiante que después e haber intentado varias veces un ejercicio obtuvo una marca verde y luego coloco un comentario como este: “Oh dios, como te he extrañado”, refiriéndose a la marca verde, nos sorprende escuchar esto, cuando nos íbamos a imaginar que un estudiante se exprese así de “Tarea”.
Mi colega me comenta que la retroalimentación instantánea consiste en enseñar en los momentos de obtener resultado.
El curto punto es permitir que ellos construyan, en nuestros laboratorios online, les permitimos construir modelos, y así las computadoras se actualizarán, construir modelos como Legos.
La quinta idea, es el aprendizaje puro, aquí usamos foros de discusión, interacción, incluso el Facebook lo usamos para este fin, no como una distracción, sino para ayudar a los estudiantes a aprender. Déjenme contarles una historia, cuando estábamos enseñando a los 155 mil estudiantes, sabíamos que tendrían dudas, así que nos organizamos para poder abrir el fórum 24/7 y nos preguntábamos como lo podríamos hacer, así que en la noche un estudiante de Pakistán hizo una pregunta y mientras yo escribía la respuesta otro estudiante de Egipto le respondió, y antes de que yo termine otro estudiante de USA también ofreció una respuesta, así que me senté fascinado por lo que estaba ocurriendo, y así que toda la noche los estudiantes estaban discutiendo y antes de la 1 de la mañana ellos habían descubierto la respuesta correcta
Algo que nos están diciendo, es que los estudiantes esta aprendiendo uno del otro, están aprendiendo al Enseñar. Pero esto no es cosa del futuro, está pasando en nuestros días, en el hoy, por eso estamos aplicando estos pruebas pilotos de educación mezclada. Este modelo lo estamos aplicando en todo el mundo, y esto puede resolver el problema practico de los “CAMO’s”, el problema del negocio, incluso podemos vender todos estos cursos a universidades, así que las universidades pueden darnos los certificados o licencias como profesores y usar todos estos cursos como al siguiente generación de libros de texto y usarlos todo lo que podamos, se convertirán en más herramientas para los maestros.
Finalmente me gustarían que Re imaginen conmigo la educación, tendremos que mudarnos de corredores de aprendizaje a espacios online, de libros de texto a Tabletas, de salones construidos de block y cemento a Dormitorios digitales,
I've taken ONLINE classes both college and career. They were great but interaction is key with measurement tracking.
If i had a "flipped classroom" through grades 1-10 it would have made school so much less painful for me. Most courses bored me and felt like they were in slow motion, and the few courses where i was interested were disengaging with little practical work or challenge.

Amazing speech Mr Anant. I really believe that education as a whole needs a revolutionary change. The online platform you people have created is one such idea. But we have much more to go. One issue that must be taken into consideration is the employment opportunity using online courses. Many people would happily leave college and study using online platforms, only if it could guarantee employment based on the skill gained during the course.
There is less pressure on MOOC courses for both people: The Student, and the Teacher. And because of that some of MOOC have exceptionnal quality, some even better than the traditional classes. Though MOOC certificates can't replace a degree.
Distance - online- learning provide time flexibility ,multi options & diminish distance to reach out for your goals but still the physical interaction is a core element in our life as we are social creatures .

Put in step by step solutions like chegg for vast amount of different problems we might encounter. Humans learn by pattern and if pattern starts to become clear by doing many repetitions then people get it. The problem with lectures is they just stand there and talk expecting everyone is going to absorb the information like a sponge. Most MOOCs are just Education 1.0 put online minus marketable credit. Education 2.0 would involve near constant interactivity, gamification, differentiated pacing and presentational style, and torrent style interpersonal tutoring.
I think the implementation of online courses as a whole needs a huge revamp, especially the ones he talks about, the ones that take place partially in class. I have taken a couple of online courses ay my University, and both of them had terrible examinations thanks to the way you preset your material online vs actual exam. I had to do online assignments/mini quizzes literally for each chapter but when the exams happened in class, the format was different the questions were much more complicated.

What an interesting video about the moocs, personally i love study by this way, I feel like I learn a lot instead when I study with a traditional way i feel like i learn only to 60%.
In fact, I learned English by this way with moocs and i'm very happy and proud of my self for that!

I love this development that is taking place in education.. One day Mooc will replace educational institution ,as going to institution requires a lot of money. I know the one on one interaction is necessary and so we will definitely come out with solution for that till then enjoy the revolution
