Ping uses a proprietary chemical coating to make ball spin more when wedge is wet (called hydropearl). The coating will eventually wear off. But it spins more when wet. That's why they are so expensive.
Shafts have a big influence on distance and spin, it would need the same newish shaft in each head to be conclusive, also forged irons can move loft over a couple of years, and may need a bit of a tweak to bring it back to its stamped loft. Still, a good test with interesting numbers.
Concept of this is good. A fitted wedge should be better. Even that 1 degree flat can be a good difference. I play SM9s and switch every other season. SM4 may be used two years but it is many years old by design. Not a bad thing just isn't their newest (SM10). Cheaper wedges have reduced bounce and degree limits. They do tend to go higher for me when I've tried them. Key is whatever you have practice often and use the ball you tend to play with.
Liked the premise and data presentation of the video. However i think you should have done a wet ball to coincide with them. In theory and practice we can control the club face being dry but cannot with the ball
I think you should have also included swing speed in your stats just to give an indication if any of the variance was from that. I also think using same swing speed is unfair as the type of wedge (blade v hollow) will affect smash factor and hence spin. Should have been trying to hit 90 with all and then compare spin
Big worry on cheap online clubs is the manufacturing tolerances. The lofts can be way out which really throws everything else. Actually thought the takeway was, keep the old wedge rather than buy a cheap one.
That cheap G-1 is way too underrated. I bought it 4-5 months ago and went several rounds of 18. It performs very well in rainy season (Thailand). The clip doesn't talk much about the build. It is a conforming grooves with milled face. The design looks alike old BV sm wedge. There are no options in terms of bounce and grind, they are given to the specific loft, which imo is like f grind from Vokey Design. I have 60°/8 and just decide to order another 56°/12 to replace my stock iron's 55°sw (RBZ Speedlite) Only con for me is the shaft which doesn't feel responsive to the strike especially in full shot compared to those better shaft like ns pro, dg s200 , but, guys, it's only under $50 😂.
Old wedge performance is interesting. I’m basically thrifty and buying a new wedge every 3 or 4 years is not a preference for me. Need to find out if one can be refurbished to get back to new performance!
I'd say the new wedge felt a little firmer and the cheaper wedge softer off the face. The older wedge sounded a little duller than the other two. Aside from that, they're much of a much.
Well wedge manufacturers would like you to change your wedges every 50 rounds or so. Unfortunately with the big OEMs charging around 200 gbp per wedge you are looking at 600 quid probably twice a year for a regular golfer. Unless you get your gear for free or have deep pockets most people will have to put up with wedges that are well worn. I have an sm4,5 and 6 in my bag and they will have to do unless i decide to go for a cheapo wedge.
the answer lays in the ability of the user. a 10 handicap and below you can bet the Ping or an equal will be in his or her bag. a 20 and above wouldn't know the difference most likely
@@JonPerkinsGolf hey you creat and i watch, didnt mean to come of sounding rude. keep up the good work. can you do a video comparing spin on shafts? for example 52 degree wedge with senior, regular, stiff and x-stiff shaft? to see disperson and spin and lenght? cheers mate
@@Starboi1337 yeah all good! I like the different opinions and input 🙂 That does sound like an interesting idea for a video, thanks! Thanks for watching along as well.
Sorry had to neg. This could have been good, even with the difference in groove tech being used. But judging by distance from hole :( then not showing the actual shot data only the average :( this is completely bad data and no one should be using this information. Bad show mate. Your channel is growing and I have started watching because i wanted and Ozzie to get a go. But that was bad really bad.
You got something wrong mate. 2 years old is not old. It's nearly new. My irons must be ancient according to your timescales (Callaway Bigbertha Fusion) 😅 Not watching the video past 2 mins.
The cheap wedge performed admirably. With the current outrageous cost of clubs something has to be available for the casual golfer. Do you want to see courses closing like in North America? You Brits get hosed on golf costs all round. I guess since you gave up your guns all that hobby money can go to the links. Personally I can't stand Ping clubs they sound terrible and really don't look as good as the other big 5s. Huge bias in your video on this one. 😢
Hey, yeah I buy mine and don't change every year either. I was more trying to compare the difference than say what anyone should do... Thanks for getting involved though
It’d be interesting if you had two of those Ping wedges - one new and one worn - just to compare it to itself but you’ll need to do that next season
Totally agree. Perfect world, that's definitely how I'd like to test it.
Spin numbers going up when wet goes against everything I thought I knew.
Yeah not what I expected either.
or just a very poor review....

Yep, it's certainly not 100% but I found it interesting so figured to share!
thanks - i dont feel like ill need a new wedge now for a bit!
You're welcome :-)
Good Job
Thanks!

I like that idea! Not sure the TrackMan owner would want me hitting a wet ball at the screen, but maybe it's not a lot different. Good idea.
I always dry the face of my wedge before hitting it, if it's wet. Better test would be wet the ball.

Interesting test 👍 I think that if you have money, buy the best. Though you can still play good scores and enjoy golf with cheaper wedges 🙂
Totally agree.

Good comments. For the record I was trying to hit 90 with all of them. But good comments, thanks.

I find it an interesting topic. It's obviously not 100%, but interesting perspective either way.

I wonder how an old Ping wedge would perform?
Yeah me too. I'd also like to see the cheaper wedge over time, but unlikely I can find one that way.
The Ping has significantly more groves than either of the other wedges. I feel like that had to be a factor in the wet test.
How was the feel to you comparing all 3?
I'd say the new wedge felt a little firmer and the cheaper wedge softer off the face. The older wedge sounded a little duller than the other two. Aside from that, they're much of a much.
I live on the coast and play in wet conditions all the time. Premium is worth it to me. Thanks
Good luck
Sm4 vokey? They’re on sm9 by now. That wedge is at least 5 yrs old. Maybe it only has 2 yrs of usage.
SM10 even, I got a set of them in my bag.
Yes it's older, just not used all that time.
Something old, something new,
Something borrowed
its up to you how they perform
Bunker test was trash, should have hit another with the cheap wedge, that was clearly a bad effort
I did hit way more shots than shown in the video but fully take your point
@@JonPerkinsGolfand how were those later shots?
He should compare a worn wedge with a new version of the worn one.
Perfect world that would definitely be ideal.
Going up in spin when wet seems kinda crazy
Agreed

And @50 rounds before replacement, that's about 150 hits!!!!! More than a pound a hit! They have to be kidding.

How do you know a 20 handicap isn't off 20 because they struggle off the tee and 3 putt every hole?
but all clubs have different grooves mate? how can it be actuall fair to judge them against eacother?
Yep, it's certainly not 100% but I found it interesting so figured to share!

The cheap wedge has a cheap shaft and an inferior hosel. I can tell when you swing the cheap wedge is not as balanced as the new and old wedge.
no you cant

Perhaps makes it even more relevant for people then?
mine are 30yr old McGregor's and still play well ;)
Seen no reason to upgrade.
@@JonPerkinsGolf you'll have to explain that logic to me there 😵💫

Nothing surprising in there. Mostly click bait.
or just spend 2 dollar and buy a towel... the bunker "test" was probably the most ridiculous "review" I have ever seen.
Listen pal - we’re not the pros who get free gear all the time. Change your wedges every year? Do you pay for yours?
Hey, yeah I buy mine and don't change every year either. I was more trying to compare the difference than say what anyone should do... Thanks for getting involved though
First!
This test proves nothing.
No worries, take it or leave it 😀
