      I think what I take away from the RLM guys is that they are genuine. They just shoot the shit about movies... and I get the feeling they'd be doing the same shit if hardly anybody followed them. Gaining subscribers and patreon e-bux never really seems to be an outright priority for them, nothing seems to be done just for the clicks... as evidenced by a half hour video reviewing freakin Blind Fury (which I love by the way, but just saying, it's not something that's going to draw millions of views). They are refreshingly free of transparent hot take outrage or suck-up shilling. Just midwestern schlubs calling it like they see it... and as a midwestern schlub myself, I appreciate that. Sometimes I think they can be a little meanspirited when going for a laugh... but that's a very minor complaint when looking at their total output.

    The Zatoichi movie that Blind Fury is directly taken from is called "Zatoichi Challenged" which is a great movie as well... Saw Blind Fury First and loved it... just like Fistful of Dollars and Magnificent Seven before it, made me want to see the source material. The Zatoichi Criterion Collection is amazing and I'd encourage anyone who liked Blind Fury, and don't mind Late 60s early 70s Japanese cinema should totally check it out!

      @kabasinski Len Sorry for the awkwardness, but i have a slang etymological question for you. In an old RLM video, you talked about not potatoing someone when pretending to hit in a scene. In french, we also use the word "patate" (idem) for a punch, and patater, for punching, repeatedly or not, someone, and even for gunning. I was wondering if you had any idea where the US use of the term came from. Translation, history ? just in case.

    Great review guys. One note, this movie is listed as a 1989 release, but it actually didn't hit US theaters until March of 1990. So Rich's guess about the films of the summer of 1989 having an effect on Blind Fury would be incorrect. It came out two weeks after Hunt for Red October and a week after House Party & Joe Versus the Volcano. The films that came out the same weekend as Blind Fury were Lord of the Flies, Nuns on the Run, Lambada and The Forbidden Dance. The following week had Pretty Woman and the week after that was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. TMNT probably had some effect on Blind Fury being that they are both martial arts movies released two weeks apart.

    10:32 That grip is usually referred to as "reverse grip". It's very unusual in actual sword/knife fighting because you decrease your effective range by a significant amount and it makes stabbing/thrusting almost impossible. If your blade is double-edged it also renders one of your edges less useful because it will be at a 90 degree~ angle with your wrist. The only clear benefit it has is that cuts will come in at an odd angle so it can potentially surprise someone.
    I have never seen it being used to any effect in tournament.

    • @architeuthis3476
      @architeuthis3476 Рік тому +1

      Rutger Hauer is using it here because this movie is an homage to the old Zatochi film series in which the titular character, a blind swordsman, has a sword concealed in his cane, and holds the sword underhanded because that's how he holds his cane. (Spoilers for at least one of the Zatoichi films: the tang is sharpened into a knife and he kills someone with it when the blade of his sword is broken)

    • @djangofett4879
      @djangofett4879 11 місяців тому +1

      @@architeuthis3476i think its a remake of zatoichi more than just an homage. its directly based on one of the zatoichi movies.
      and yeah, reverse grip looks cool but its pretty useless for practical combat. its a movie about a blind swordsman who is the best of the best and unstoppable killing machine. its pretty far fetched, realism isnt too important here.

This was the 1st movie that made me respect Rutger, I was only like 5 when Blade Runner came out. Saw Split Second and loved it, and went back to Blade Runner. Guy is a excellent actor.

    Look up "The Blood of Heroes" for a good Rutger Hauer movie, Joan Chen and a young Vincent D'onofrio are also in it, as team mates in a Post apocalyptic violent sports league. It's one of my all time favorite movies. It's also known as "The Salute of the Jugger"

      Late to the party, but you're 100% right. Call it low rent Zatoichi, or Zatoichi through the prism of coked out 80s Hollywood.

      "Film number 17 of the original series was remade in the US in 1990 (by TriStar Pictures) as Blind Fury, an action movie starring Rutger Hauer."
      From the Zatoichi wiki article.

      Also, there are at least two Zatoichi movies where at the beginning he honors the wish of a dying parent to take a child to the other parent.

      They may have gotten the idea for Blind Fury from Zatoichi, a great Japanese movie/tv series. If you haven't watched any of them do you will be in for a treat. Take care and stay safe.

    Rich said zatoichi with so little effort, it proves he is simply an actor Mike hired years ago. He’s not quite Andy Kaufman, but whoever plays Rich Evans is still a master of his craft.
