  • My hometown Kiev!!
    The other side of Kiev..This is how 75% of the population in Kiev live like.
    In this district, which is shown in the video, live more than 1.000.000 people!
    However this is not a good example of poverty in Ukraine! Other cities like Charkiv and especially villages in Ukraine suffer big poverty and hard life circumstances while Kiev is the best place to live in the whole country! Check out my other video about "Extreme Poverty" in Ukraine!
    In these houseprojects live only middle class people!

    As an Englishman in Kiev I was initially shocked by the appearance of the soviet blocks but I never felt in danger. The people although not immediately friendly will not cause any trouble. There are many districts in UK and US with much higher crime and murder rates.

    Ukrainian people who live in these apartments are not so poor, they are NOT poverty. In 2013 the price of 1-room apartments costs about 40,000 US dollars, 2-rooms apartment is about 60,000 US dollars. It is NOT cheap, it is the chapest price, many apartments cost more. Owners, probably, are very lucky to have these apartments, because in Kiev, Ukraine, during the period 1991-2013 only few families were able to get free apartments from the government. All others must buy it now. In 2013 many of these buildings in Troeschina and other surrounding districts of Kyiv are packed with many-many cars in a backyards of these buildings. Some people do not buy apartments, they just came to Kiev from other cities, and they rent their flats, but they have or buy cars. Cars parking place is just a place around these buildings. Funny, or not funny, but OWNERS of apartments MUST BE VERY HAPPY. They have their own apartments. Young Ukrainians who is 17-20 years old must work 30 years to earn for their own apartment? Who knows? May be they will be lucky! :)

    • @VictorFursov
      @VictorFursov 8 років тому +1

      That's a good point, but you exagerrate a little! Now in 2016 (end of year) the price for 2-rooms apartment (about 60 sq.meters whole) is about 45-50,000 USDollars. It is still a good price. Smallest 1-room-apartment will cost less, but not too drastically, at least 30-35,000 usd. Are you in Ukraine now or not?

    If you live in Ukraine - you likely do not have a car. So every morning you have to get to your work on public transport.
    But public transport worse that in Ukraine I cant imagine. It is rotten old buses where most of people stand, it is giant traffic jams.
    To reach center of Kiev from Troeshina you have to stand 1:20 in rotten bus and in subway train. And at evening 1:20.
    And tomorrow will be the same horror, and whole your life.
    You will get to the work already tired of public transport

    This video was shot through a dirty car window. This district in the summer despite the gray color of the buildings is filled with green trees everywhere. It has playgrounds and wide sidewalks. You could go for a walk in this district and walk for hours on tree-lined streets, without ever crossing a road due to underground crossings, and you will be safe. People who live in these apartments are middle class, because in Europe most people live in apartment buildings. That's why unlike Detroit or Bronx, while you are on your one hour walk in Kiev, you will never run into a crazy person talking to himself, or someone sleeping in a box. People who live in this district still get decent free healthcare, or very affordable paid one. Maybe not all of them have cars, because of excellent public transport, the cheapest in Europe, but they have friends, social life, most of them are thin and well dressed, have at least a Bachelor's degree, they read books, eat good food and are happy, even though a lot of them don't suspect how good their lives are (hence this video made by someone who obviously have never lived in an American ghetto.)

    • @RK-ct7rc
      @RK-ct7rc 9 років тому

      +Inara590 Lol, the sad thing is that you do see people talking to themselves, if not more...have you seen the current situation or are you still looking at the bright side. Troeschina was said to be one of the worst areas by google as the google street view drivers said they didnt feel comfortable here as they didnt in areas of detroit, los angeles and some areas in london. You can't say the cheapest area with the 500,000 population is good, if you want to brag about good areas maybe mention obolonska naberezhna or something. Please.

  • @kamtarbol
    @kamtarbol 3 роки тому +3

    I agree with Maholen123, I'm also a Czech and I live in comparable suburb as is in the video. And I live in Prague, the "pearl of Europe". Maybe some of the buildings are better maintained in here, because of more money. But it's the same type of house and most of them are in the same shape. These buildings must have been build EVERYWHERE, Eastern block or West, because people needs to live somewhere fast and cheap.

This is not true (!). The eastern part has much more money because of good relationsto the rich russians and the huge amount of industry.

    Of course you can't compare this to a slum, because this district in the video is one of the best and cleanest High-rise areas in the Ukraine. If you visit a village or a small town here, you will see that circumstances are not better than in the slums of brazil. Many people in the villages don't have access to clean water and corruption, poverty and crime is normal in everyday life.

But people had smartphones and and dressed somewhat decently wearing brands that are common in western countries. It was like they wanted to move forward and join us in the present, but their surroundings and environment were holding them back.

    Hi, this district is called "Troeshina" ("Троещина"). It is located on the left side of kiev. If you take the metro (subway) from kreshchatyk to Chernihivska and than take the 28 Marshrutka (which is located directly by the station) you will get there in less than 1hour! =)
    I really recommend you to visit this district, it will be a very good experience for you, so you see how typical ukrainians live! :)

    At least you guys have buildings, with sewage and all. Here in Brazil in the Favelas (slums) people build their own shack, no sewage systme or nothing.

    I agree! Yes! there is others out there who are able to appreciate and understand that these are NOT slums! Sure there are some structures needing attion, and some are in real need of renovation to make them habitable again. But many of these are very nice looking. The purpose --original design intent of the "stacked high rise" is to get inhabitents off of land surface to free up city land surface for PARKS! and OPEN GREEN SPACE!! And you see that here. I wish I could come to Kiev! Im from USA!

    Kiev is a great city! Every city has poor areas. Everywhere there is poor and upscale places. But overall Kiev is great place to live.

    If you compare Kiev to the rest of Ukraine, than you can say that the city is beautiful! Look at Kharkiv, a city with a population of 1,5million people in the east of Ukraine and trust me, most parts of the city looks like a shithole. So these High-rise areas in Kiev aren't as bad as most of the other parts of Ukraine, but I don't say that this district in Kiev is a beautiful one...Of course it's not!;)
    But there are much more worse places in Ukraine!

    I am Danish, and Im quite curious about life in the Ukraine. Can a person create a better future for oneself and ones family? And is a ukraine a good country for going to vacation in? :) :) If I go to vacation there with me and my father, is there any dangers of any kind? :) :) Just interested
