Bobby Koelble - Death "Symbolic" Solos Play-Along
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 бер 2020
- To commemorate the 25th anniversary of Death's "Symbolic", I decided to create a play-along video of the solos that I contributed to the album. I stuck to the primary parts that I played live and didn’t include the overdubbed harmonies, etc. The Washburn EC 29 that I'm playing here is not the guitar I played on the album, but is pretty much it's twin, and was the guitar that I used as a backup during the Symbolic tours (however, I did play a couple of shows with it, and Chuck actually played it onstage once when he broke a string on his Stealth). I actually like this guitar a little better than the one I recorded with, but didn't use it much since it's obviously not a very death metal-looking instrument ;) Hope you enjoy it, and please like and subscribe if you do!
Bobby, your solos on Symbolic touch the Absolute.
Thank you.
true
am I the only one who think his solos are so unusual yet so interesting?
Exactly! Very refreshing, if I may say exotic :) Not some nonsense shredding with repetive arpeggios and what not. Symbolic is my fav album of all times, pure poetry.
No one sounds like BK. I could pick out a BK solo out of a 1000 guitarist lineup. Guy is a Genius.
No.
No eres el único, amigo. Los solos de Bobby son muy particulares, con una mezcla de melodia y destreza pocas veces vista en el Metal extremo. El solo de Perennial Quest sigue estando entre mis favoritos de la vida ♥️
Hands down the best "second guitarist" Death had. Paul Masvidal is a genius but he wasn't quite there at the time of Death. James Murphys solos sound like guitar picking exercises, very uninspired. Andy Larocque and Shannon Hamm were fine but by their time it was just fully the Chuck show.
That Perennial Quest solo was always my favorite off the album, and I'm ashamed to say I thought it was Chucks for years. Fucking incredible songwriting.
yess
Solos with an impressive sense of rhythm and great fusion appeal. Koeble is the most underrated guitarists who joined Death band. He is great.
👍👍👍
agree
One of the best to ever do it.
his original work bro.
👍👍👍
Your solo on Perennial Quest is one of the most creative passages of guitar lead both in and out of the genre. What a pleasure to see it played so cleanly here.
Second that! brilliant
Siiiiii.el final de Perennial Quest es magistral!
Awesome 29 fret Washburn! I've still got mine from '89!
Nice! They're pretty sweet, right? A friend of mine in college had one ('88 or '89) and I really dug it, so I had to get one.
I'm still looking for one...
@@patrickhale424 there’s some on reverb but not for cheap
@@lilfire325_3 yep and there's one in a pawn shop not too far from me but they're way overpriced
@@patrickhale424 how much?
The solos for ‘Zero Tolerance’ break my brain. How a human conceived that particular string of notes and with that tone makes no sense. They are infinitely and simultaneously creative, disturbing, and perfectly voiced.
It's crazy how just two minutes of extra content can make such an incredible difference to an already high quality album. Respect!
Indeed! I mean Death had great guitar players in general when it comes to virtuosity, but Bobby's choice of tones makes it even more out there, and each and every single one had to be chosen specifically otherwise the vibe wouldn't work.
This guy has any amazing approach to phrases and is not contained by measures. His ability to make melodic structure ignoring typical expectations is epic. Little moments, so profound but far too short.
1:51- the end, absolute genius! So well executed!
I literally hate that this is the only album you played on. Above Masvidal, above Hamm, above Murphy, above even Larocque. Phrasing is disturbing and cosmic. Absolutely love these solos. The Symbolic solo hurts to listen to and it's glorious.
And the best part is that even though you're clearly a jazz guy, you're getting off on the metal stuff. There's no faking it. You're enjoying what you're playing regardless of the genre.
Naw
Nah, Hamm is a beast.
@@bobmularky7456 no, Hamm is the second least interesting player to hold that position. The order goes like this:
6. Rozz
5.Hamm
4. Murphy
3. Masvidal
2. Larocque
1. Koelble
@@alphaenemyplus8376 Masvidal 3rd is criminal
@@lt8400 it's apt. Larocque and Bobby have better melodic structures and phrasing. Masvidal is absolutely incredible, though
That second solo on Zero Tolerance is so short but it gives me goosebumps every time. Perfection.
Perrenial quest solo is such a unique masterpiece. The phrasing, pacing, air, space and flow. A true masterpiece,
Disgusting. Your Symbolic solos are truly some, if not my favorite metal solos ever...watching the Zero Tolerance ones gives me a new appreciation. 🤤
liam wilson Facts
One of the most brilliant guitarists I've had the pleasure of listening to.
Happy 25 Anniversary!! Thank you!!
Thanks, Nelly!!
Love the solo “Zero Tolerance”.
Best metal album of all time !
Perennial quest solo is just out of this world
In this depressing times
This cheered me up Bobby thank you.
Jazzy, inhuman piece of work. I'm very curious of the expressions in Chuck's face, at the first presentation by Bobby. The same magic is, that in the explanation text, under the video i found a friendly outright man, in the shoes of a guitar hero! Thank you, Professor Koelble!!
Such deadly solos on this album. You’re the man for doing this!!!!
second solo of Zero Tolerance is just amazingly beautiful
It's a soul flight
The best solos from all the death albums... the most deep rooted and emotional notes I've ever heard in a death album... especially on perennial quest.. I love them !
This are the guitar solos that inspired me to play guitar at my 120%. Such a great guitarrist Bobby!
Please do more Death covers, if you can tutorials aswell. Great playing brother, Chuck always had the best and talented musicians by his side. RIP Chuck Schuldiner, Scott Clendenin, Sean Reinert.
He does not "cover" but rather play the content that he was a part of the making of it.
Also RIP Ralph Santolla
He was in the band...

@@realmz - I was going to post the same comment that you did. It isn't a cover when you are playing your own stuff. hehe.
I had the same feeling listening to these solos when this album came out as I did to some of Chris Polands solos. Super weird but super awesome. Funny they both have serious jazz backgrounds.
Thanks Bobby, bringing joy to All Death fans in this hard times!!
Oh man that second solo from Symbolic...goddamn! This was excellent. Thanks for sharing.
it was 1996 when this album first dropped in my hands and the Zero Tolerance solo sounded so out of this world to me. It made me want to learn guitar. Bobby's solos in Symbolic and James Murphy's solos in Cause of Death. Absolution.
Bobby Koelble has been one of my favourites ever since I heard the Symbolic album. Criminally underrated musician
Mr Koelble is keeper of the knowledge that’s an interesting gift
one of the best unsung guitarists out there. the perennial solo is one the best ever made. then Chuck comes in and matches it. NO WORDS
seeing you play these solos,20 plus years as they were recorded and seeing they havent changed is amazing. always thought you were the most interesting soloist of all the death guitarists. they were all excellent, but you are excellent and interesting as the jazz is so ingrained in the solos.
Personally, I always thought Andy LR was untouchable. One of the very very top of the top metal guitarists of our time
Such amazing work bro!...Off topic a little but when I went to see Allan Holdsworth during his last show in Florida I saw you in one of the front rows. It was awesome to see you there, I wish I would have said something to you but I was a little “starstruck” at the time...you obviously have great taste in music.
Right on, man. That show was incredible. It was so great to see him one last time. RIP
I have to comment again, damn this so classy, man!
Holy shit, I've been waiting to see this since the day this album came out in '95. Cheers Bobby, that was sick!
Thanks Bobby. 25 years "Symbolic" this album is amazing.
Makes me remember Marty Friedman!! I love this sound, with jazz Influences, great bending. Very good
Thank you so much for this! That album had more impact on me as a musician, songwriter, and guitarist than any other album, so getting to see this video is hugely entertaining, but also helps demystify a lot of stuff that’s been stumping me over the years!
I love how much you can make that 29 fret guitar sing bro. Those songs just wouldn't be the same without your input, much respect! \m/\m/
There is no universe in which I can picture that record not having your solos. Your phrasing is the final important piece of what made that record so special. Thanks for your giant contribution to Death metal Bobby.
I rewatch this video all the time just to hear my favorite Death solos of all-time back to back
I just discover this vid. Man!!! Perennial quest is My Favourite solo of all time !!! It gives me goosebumps anytime.
Pure absolute perfection.
Bobby you are an incredible guitar player
So clear , brilliant ,love symbolic album
Perennial question one of best death solo
Bobby, this rips
Thanks, man. Cheers \m/
Man, those solos in Zero Tolerance are something else, and to tell you the truth only you can make them justice.
if anyone is watching this in 2023 or something watch Death live in Tokyo 95, skip to the end of the philosopher. Bobby is playing licks I have N E V E R heard before
Impressive stuff! And absolutely lovely to watch!
Death always had the best well thought solos!
Perianal quest was one of my least liked songs until I could not unhear this solo playing in my head . I've got a deep appreciation for it Bobby's and chucks solo blend so nicely and at the switch
There’s a uniqueness and a tastefulness about the way you play. I can hear it in your jazz playing and it comes through here as well.
Perennial Quest the most beautiful song on that album, a masterpiece. thanks chuck and thanks bobby the solo is beautiful
my favourites among all of Death's albums
The best guitar player ever, the master!
I'm amazed, how effortlessly he plays this complicated stuff. The solos and the whole album are true masterpieces. Superb, Bobby!
Chuck always surrounded himself with the best. Absolute amazing work on Symbolic Bobby. That album is a huge part of my life. Thank you for being apart of it. Unfortunately I didnt get to go, but my brother and my 2 boys went and saw the DTA tour in San Diego and my boy will never forget you looking straight at him while ripping through a killer lead. He was sitting on the stage. Everytime I play Symbolic he remembers that night.
Chuck had different lead guitarists for every Death album. I love all the albums, and can't choose a best guitarist, from Rick Rozz, to Shannon Hamm, and everyone else in between. Bobby did great here, though!!!
I've listened to countless albums over the years. There's amazing players playing for the song. Great ones. But what you wrote here on Symbolic in terms of lead playing is one of the best in my books. Great stuff, agressive, trippy, melodic, diminished. Lovely
Awesome solos! Always been some of my Favorite Death solos.
Man!! This is gold! Really getting to see in detail how you played these timeless solos is so awesome!
Your leads are something else. The stars aligned on that record for sure. Some of the most interesting and creative playing in my opinion
Perennial Quest and Symbolic OMG!, those solos are legend !!. Thanks Bobby for this !!!!
Not for nothing but this is pure gold to me, as I'd always regarded symbolic as my favorite death album and Bobby as my favorite second guitar for the band. If you had told me 20 years ago I'd be watching this (especially on a phone) I'd have called bullshit
Bobby you killed it in Salt Lake tonight!
Bobby you are the best guitarist of Death. Your solos are avesome. Touch deep. Thank you!
amazing!
Extremely unique phrasing and harmonic understanding. This is what makes Symbolic (the album) imho stand out so much.
It's possible to realize a jazz influence in the symbolic solo. There's a kind of jazz phrase in the middle. Very creative
Thank you!!! And thank you for being part of this masterpiece!
Amazing!
Awesome!!! 🤘 The sounds of my youth! 😉
Bro i'm so happy i saw you 2 nights in a row (belgium and the netherlands) and you gave me your pick i mean this vid is just too much :) Sick stuff and yes keep the spirit alive!!!!!
The Masterpiece! Thanks.
Excellent!!
Hi Bobby, I'm very happy to see this video because now I know who plays the superb solos that I love to listen to :) And what's more, I discovered your 29 fret guitar!!! Wow. I love your musicality, this mix of styles in your solos. I always enjoy listening to the Symbolic album. THANKS
Your solos are amazing, thanks for this!
Great! Thanks Bobby
Incredible
Beautiful !! :O
Thanks Bobby!! Hope we see another video like this soon hahaha
Amazing to see it played. It really puts a whole new level to the solos. I always thought they were very difficult solos, but now I truly know that your style is very much your own and I dont believe I've ever heard anyone play phrases the way you do. Much respect!
So much feeling. Just solid gold.
Awesome Bobby! Love your solos on this album!!
Absolute killer solos, all of em!! Thanks for this!
legendary solos for sure
So sick!! You're one of the best!!
LEGEND !
Effortlessly done 🤘
Impresionante Maestro!!!!
