  • UPDATE: Part 2 is here!
    • Critical Close-up: Doo...
    Rip and tear! Rip and tear! RIP AND TEARRRR!
    So last year I played RAGE, and while it was a good game on it's own right, I felt it was a fairly weak game all things considered. This juxtaposition is interesting, and I wanted to make a video about it. So I played through it again a couple weeks ago and took notes this time. - George

    I just wanted to do the non-typical UA-cam comment thing and say that I really enjoy your videos. You have great, detailed critical insight about videogames. I can tell you spend a lot of time reading/watching other critics and not just making short, poorly edited videos about how something is either the best or worst thing ever. Also, you do a pretty good Plinkett impression!

    It's weird watching an old Bunnyhop video and hearing such a high pitched George.

  • @bunnyhopshow
    @bunnyhopshow  12 років тому

    A lot of reasons. There's the increasing crossover work between the movie and film industries, there's a century of film history impacting a few decades of game history, both industries largely market to the same demographic.
    Ya know, the history and development of "cinematic" gaming is actually a really broad but fascinating topic. That kinda makes me want to write about it...

    Nitpick - aiming in doom actually is effected by movement with some guns. Shoot the shotgun standing still, then compare it to when moving. Once you start shooting, the gun stays in that position, so you're now shooting to the left or right of where you would if standing still. This really only affects pistol and shotgun aiming, but is still big for precise aiming for ammo conservation in earlier levels.

      Doom the game? Yes, Romero made many of the levels and much of the core gameplay decisions. Carmack did fantastic work making the engine fast and efficient. Many others did a fantastic work, music, textures and so on, but without Romero it would have been a very different game.

    The thing is, enemies in Doom that actually use hitscan weapons tend to be either fairly weak or rare. In comparison a lot of the projectile weapons in Rage that the enemies use have large splash areas, meaning even if you see it coming, you don't actually have time to get out of the way.

    Firearm wielding Doom enemies also have instant bullets, if that's what you mean with "hit scan". The only thing that makes them able to miss their target is their cooldown inbetween or before each shot, since they aim when their attack sequence/animation begins (first frame at 30fps), but not when the shot is about to happen (except the "chaingunners", who I think aim every 1st out of 2 shots).
    I think that's the big difference between Rage and Doom when you look at the enemies.

    The one thing I fondly remember from Rage was the way enemies recoiled and ragdolled from certain types of damage. *That* was well done. *That* I would like to see more of in more games.
    But the game was shorter than my tiny wiener. Let's not do that in more games.

    However, I'm glad you don't just rip off of Mr. Plinkett's reviews anymore. It's just annoying here. Then again, this whole video is talking about a game with a mishmash of game mechanics, so it wouldn't be beyond you to ironically use a similar style to emphasize a point.

    Wolfenstein 3D has "mouse movement" and "alt-for-strafe" as well.
    but no one used it because:
    1) it was not necessary
    2) it was actually more confusing and halting due to the amount of keys you could hold down at once. Say you were to hold down Alt-left_arrow as well as opening a door and shoot?
    No can do; you'd get a beep from your computer telling you that you were holding down too many keys at once.
    Having your hand on the mouse also wasn't really effective, as

  • @bunnyhopshow

    I actually think they could get away with it. Doom is a good deal more of a recognizable IP than Painkiller, and banking on 90's nostalgia is a tactic that worked pretty damn well for Nintendo. If they wanted to pull a Campcom and build it using the classic graphics, then there's a simple solution: make a cell phone game.
    But now that I think about it, the fans have been asking for a modern-looking but retro-playing Doom game since 2004. They've been asking for it by the droves.

    I dunno I thought rage was ok. Was it the next generation of Doom we all hoped for? No. Did it have more going on mechanically than a lot of the modern military fps games coming out at the time? Probably.

    • @nathaneskin3572
      @nathaneskin3572 8 років тому +2

      Condemned Sure but it wasn't a modern military fps. It was a post apocalyptic open world fps, and it had way less going on than any of the other of those that came out around that time.

    • @lolololololol012
      @lolololololol012 8 років тому

      Yeah, but it played like a modern military shooter. Idk man, I don't
      think its critically appropriate to lump games together based solely on
      setting. If that rule was applied elsewhere we would wind up comparing
      "This war of mine" and "Arma III", as both take place on a modern
      battlefield of some descript. Both games set out to do something
      different, and should be graded on what that effort accomplished. "Rage"
      was going for something completely different than "Fallout 3"
      mechanically. You can argue that Fallout 3 did a better job with the
      setting, but i wouldn't be so quick to directly compare the mechanics.

    Going up against hitscan weapons is annoying. A couple of enemies use them in Duke 3D and they are a pain to dodge, but not the shotgun-wielding pigcops. They deal a lot of damage, but they shoot slower than most other enemies, miss often at long range and always clearly telegraph when they're about to shoot.

    I used to make Wolf3D and Doom maps that were just five minutes of 'kill everything while dodging all the shots, all while standing in the middle of the pack.' I did the same with Descent and Descent 2.
    I love massively one-sided dogfights where failing to predict the enemy's range and firing cone meant that you might as well stand still.
    Most of today's FPS games are just Medal of Honor in new skin. I don't want realistic. I want FUN. Give me a DOOM clone over a MOH clone every time!

    On the third flip of the dick, games like Xonotic show how to do regen right. Your health regenerates at an increasingly slow rate as you approach 100, and decreases at an increasingly fast rate the higher you are above 100. If you just stood there, or didn't take any hits, your health would come back, but because of the map design and playerbase (this is a game in the quake tradition, after all), that will never happen, so you have to constantly look for health, but the ticking down health above 100 means that you can't just go get all the medkits and then start gunning down noobs like there's no tomorrow. And thanks to the regen, if those newbs can get away from you for a few seconds, they might be able to take a 3rd or 4th hit.

    @10:28. What is he trying to say about aimming for consoles and PC? He says it too fast it's hard for me to listen. something about the speed of the mouse and how a stick has limited movement?

    Fun fact: there is a doom rpg. Developed for mobile platforms in symbian times. There is also a fantasy rpg that uses the same engine. They were actually quite decent games

    Hearing your opinion on doom is pretty funny because for me the game is about as far away from a power trip as possible, the game constantly throws ambushes at you to the point I pretty much assumed that If I pressed a button I was going to get ambushed, for most stages the music isn’t a awesome rock song but more something from a horror game, and the game has dark sections invisible monsters and dark sections with invisible monsters.
    But the thing that truly made the game so terrifying for me is that if you die you lose all your weapons and ammo, because of that I was pretty much panicking my entire time playing the game, i actually stopped playing because I found the game too stressful and scary.

    Brutal Doom changes the guns to use projectiles, too, making the gunplay all that much better.

    well technically , in doom , the "bulllet ennemies" are mindless zombies.... in rage, those are living being , i think.

    Great vid!
    I had a lot of hope in the game as an avid ID fan but it was poor!
    The only cool aspects of the game were the sniper rifle, crossbow that looks like a stag beetle, Wiiiiiingsticks, machine gun, the defibrillator and that card game.
    The problem with the AK was about recoil, only the first shot would land so to even hit anything you'd have to limit you pop shots to only one bullet to reliably hit anything.
    I think its about the 'standard primary' weapon cliche. Its that kind of weapon where ammo is most available but it neither kills things slow or fast. Due to players maximizing the amount burst damage, the enemies that developers took hours upon hours to make are neutralized in mere seconds. Piss poor weapons allows you to savor the enemy designs but the way they performed it made it very frustrating.
