the coolant is already 50/50, you don't want to add distilled water. If you want to flush the system out, I would suggest doing it with coolant... or else the mixture will be 25% coolant and 75% water with distilled water as a flush.

NutzAboutBolts oh sweet! I’m a little nervous to do it on my own for the first time. What about the power steering? Should it be flushed or drain and fill is alright too?
NutzAboutBolts I’m mainly asking cause the fluids that were put into the Honda weren’t the pure genuine power steering nor the type 2 so I wanted to make sure it wouldn’t mess anything up if I just drained the old for the new. Thank you so much!
Jennifer C yeah, just keep draining and refill till it looks clean. Turn the steering wheel too so you can cycle the old fluids in the rack and pinion out to drain that
Thank you for this video! Sorry im not very familiar with compressor fans. So what you're saying is it will take about 45 mins before the fan turns on? Then turn on the heater.
Yes, or you can just drive the vehicle until the fan comes on in 20 mins or you can rev it up to 2000 rpm and wait 20 mins when it turns on before turning the heater on.
It looks like you just drained antifreeze from the radiator. What about the heater core and the rest of the coolant. Based on what you just did you'll be mixing old coolant with the new. Please let me know if I'm wrong.
Yeah. I'm gonna swap my coolant today and I'm gonna top up the coolant up with just water one or a few times and then let the engine run to get most of the stuff out without the need to get under the car to remove the drain bolt...
does the drain plug also drain the resivour tank? i have a 2015 accord 4 cyl. and want to do it myself rather then pay the dealer 200 to do it. the owners manual says it takes 1.5 gallons. Is that 1.5 gallons in the radiator, plus refilling the tank? Or is it 1.5 gallons in the radiator and tank? thanks!
Draining fluid will also drain the reservoir but only if you don't open the radiator cap while draining (the draining creates a vacuum which sucks the fluid out of the reservoir). It is probably quicker to just remove the reservoir and drain it by hand even tho those reservoirs can be in an annoying spot. It's probably a good idea to just drain it by hand and rinse it out since it is a spot for sediment to collect. The 1.5 gallons is for the whole system, not separate from the reservoir. The reservoir is just a place (edited) for fluid to go when it gets hot and expands (pressure increases) after running for a while/on a hot day/when standing still and the fan is the only thing blowing air over the radiator fins. Then when the car cools off, the reducing pressure of the system sucks some of the reservoir fluid back into the radiator. If you use the funnel as shown here, the space in the funnel acts as the reservoir - the reservoir itself won't fill (maybe a little that gets around the adapter tube) during the fill - that's why you gotta do it manually at the end, but I'd argue you don't need to fill it to the max - especially if you forget to use the heater during the fill (edited) or fill it on a particularly cold day and don't let the engine run very long while filling the radiator - but that's why they have extra space above and below the min/max lines. It's a pretty foolproof system.
I'm just wondering why you didn't choose to flush it with some distilled water? Should I do it on my 07 accord? Also, does it matter that I didn't drain from the drain bolt at the rear cylinder? Thanks for your videos.
Tim Kwok As far as I've seen, people don't drain it from the block, usually too hard to access it. For the distill water, its supposed to be the best, but you can use regular water.
Thanks for the reply. I was actually wondering why you didn't use distilled water to wash first, then pour in the coolant like some of the other videos?
Tim Kwok you can if you want to fully flush the cooling system. This vehicle coolant is OEM so the system still looks good since we've taken care of this vehicle well and didn't see any build up of sludge or grime. So we opted for coolant drain and refill. If you saw our other video on the honda civic, we did drain and refill 3 times with water to flush out the cooling system.
Tamulmol Kainbaboy You can do that, but its such a hassle because you'll have to do that 3 times with distill water like our civic video that we did. We would only do that if its really dirty and you see sludge in your cooling system.
I've got Pentofrost A3 recommended from Napa Auto is that the right kind for 2004 Honda Accord LX sedan 2.4 liter? also how do I flush it out? because I had green antifreeze in it other times they gave me was blue.
So I'm planning to do my coolant change in a few days since I'm at about 110k and I bought two of the 1 gallon honda blue coolant. I used maybe a third of one gallon just to keep my coolant levels good. Do u think I'll have more than enough with about 1 and 2/3 gallon of honda coolant?
hello quick question...i did everything exactly what you said but for some reason the radiator fan never comes on, is that fine...i waited for like 30 min and nothing...
I had this same issue. the radiator fan only comes on with the AC button turned in, and even then it only clicks on for a few seconds, then off, then on a few seconds, etc. does anyone know why?
My fans never turned on, i waited for about 20 mins. It might be because it's cold out today but i doubt it. I went ahead and steadily gave it gas which caused bubbles and then I turned the heater on. Any idea why they didn't come on?
if your fan doesn't turn on, you should check your upper and lower radiator hose to see if its hot or not. If the upper hose is hot and the lower hose is cold, that means the engine is not hot enough for the fan to kick on, when the upper and lower radiator hose is hot, it means the engine is hot, the thermostat is open and the radiator fan should turn on to cool the engine down. That's when you turn the heater on so it can flow through the heater core.
yes, its fine the remove the funnel once you're done bleeding the air out of the cooling system. There was no radiator cap to begin with since we put an adapter there for the funnel.
i should have used Honda coolant. my 04 accord v6 water pump started leaking after only 50k miles. pep boys replaced timing belt kit and water pump and filled with prestone crap green coolant.
I have odyssey and I'm the second owner and I have no idea what kind a coolant they used so any advise what to do?and what kind? coz I'm just afraid to mix a different type coolant
+Marck Jerney Viernes Honda uses the Blue Coolant, the blue coolant is already mixed with 50/50 and it should say it on the bottle. If you are in doubt, you can ask the Honda parts guy and they should know.
+NutzAboutBolts hi sir so i change my coolant and thermostat as well.. I waited like 5-10 minutes but the fun didn't turn on so I just turn on my heater (max) and waited my fun turn on but it didn't... I have hot air and my temperature was on normal (drove it for 30 minutes) why my fun didn't spin if I have my heater on?
Marck Jerney Viernes I would recommend redoing your coolant drain and refill then. The reason your radiator fan doesn't turn on is because your engine isn't hot enough. Just make sure you're doing the job right, especially putting in the thermostat properly, or else it'll over heat if the nipple was placed in the wrong position.
+NutzAboutBolts I had this same issue. I flushed the car and filled it with distilled water to flush it. I turned the engine on and waited 15 minutes but the fan never kicked on. Also the header stopped blowing hot air. I started revving the engine a lot and engine almost over heated so I turned it off. I then burped the system and filled it with more water, and tried again. The heater worked fine, and the engine will not over heat, but the fan will not come on. The only way the radiator fan comes on is with the AC button turned on, but it only comes on for a few seconds at a time. Does this mean my radiator fan has a broken component? Do I need a new thermometer? Could my water pump be broken? Why would a fan never come on even when the engine is hot?
+theotful if you just have the engine on and running idle, it'll take 30 mins for the radiator fan to kick on. If you rev. it at 2k rpm, it'll be on in 15-20 mins, if you drive it around on freeway miles, it'll turn on 15 mins. When you turn the AC button on, that's the condenser fan, not the radiator fan. The car has 2 fans, one is the radiator to cool down the engine, the other is the condenser fan to remove heat from the A/C system.
I'm not too sure about peak, you can read the info in the back and see if it's compatible with Honda or not, some of them say it. Blue doesn't always mean it's for that vehicle, it's an after market brand so just read what vehicle it's compatible with.
Esso Janahi Its to keep coolant from over flowing or spilling and it helps the coolant system suck in more coolant when its low while running the engine.
my car has a digital control for AC and heater.. if I turn on the heater, my AC will be turned on too. Is that okay? or it has to be heater without AC. Thanks

Rationalist Society No, its that bottle right beside the radiator. You can see it in the video. You can see the blue coolant is inside there. The blue cap on the left side is the windshield washer reservoir.
so can i add water first to fully flush out the old coolant and repeat it for 2,3 times; then add honda coolant at the end. Also, how do you take old coolant from the reservoir?
+jtk49 if you're going to do that, add in 100% concentrated coolant, or else if you add 50/50, it'll be diluted to 25% coolant and 75% water since there is 100% water in the system already.
+jtk49 There is no need to fully fully flush out old stuff. That is a myth. Just drain and fill like in the video. As for the reservoir, you can use a cheap turkey baster to suck out old stuff.
Nick V well, we only recommend a flush if you have non OEM coolant in there that is causing mold in the cooling system. As for removing the fluid from the reservoir, you can pull it up and out from the place that its on. You don't need a turkey baster to suck it out since you can remove the reservoir and clean it out with clean water.
themo8370 thanks! if you hold the gas pedal at 1500 rpm, the fan radiator fan will turn on in about 15 minutes, if you let it idle, it'll turn on about 25-30 minutes. You can also drive around for 10 minutes and wait till you hear the fan turns on, then turn on the heater, it should be fine.
What happen if i will not fil with Honda antifreeze ? If i use like Prestone antifreeze which is for all models of any cars .Will this cause any problems?
its already bled by using the spill free funnel and waiting for the radiator fan to come on. Once the radiator fan comes on, all the bubbles/air in the system are gone.

I have got to get one of those funnels. I've been draining and flushing coolant in cars for the last 15 years with only a little 99-cent funnel that fits loosely in the radiator cap opening. It's terrible, always makes a mess.
Not 100% sure but Iy guess would be having heater(another coolant circuit open) would divert coolant away from motor and up into heater core which when not at 100% full capacity, could cause the motor to slightly overheat.
you forgot to drain the coolant outta the block. So you just mixed new coolant with the old. heater block plug is located on the passenger side above the wheel.
you do complete flushes to get rid of any left over gunk in the system. If your system is clean and you know there's nothing dirty in there, you can just do a drain and refill.
⚠️ In step one, before you drain, you need to turn your heater thermostat to MAX HEAT, start your car and run it for 5 seconds, then turn it off. This opens the heater core, which will drain more coolant. This is in the official service manual.

How long do did you run the fan with heater until turning off and filling reservoir
30-45 mins if its idle, 20-25 mins if you step on the gas pedal to 2k rpm.
You didn't mention bleeding sir bubbles out..I have a 05 honda Accord LX
2003 2.4l honda Accord overheating. I bled coolant properly. Confirmed thermostat is good. Confirmed water pump is good. Still getting hot upper hose but cool lower hose with no heated air in cabin. Could I have a restricted radiator?
Any check engine lights? Also I believe the lower radiator hose is where the thermostat is, if it’s not opening, then it can cause overheating and also the lower hose will be cool to touch.

Thanks for the video! If I wanted to flush my radiatior with distilled water before filling it up should I do the exact same process? I have other that have said leave the heater on full blast while waiting for the fan to kick in, thanks again
the coolant is already 50/50, you don't want to add distilled water. If you want to flush the system out, I would suggest doing it with coolant... or else the mixture will be 25% coolant and 75% water with distilled water as a flush.
He's not asking to mix... He's asking to flush... You know when you run a few cycles of distilled water to flush everything out then you put in the new antifreeze

When you removed the adaptor cap for the radiator did you let the car cool first or did you remove it right after the previous step? Because i feel like if i did that id get hot coolant all over me
When the radiator fan kicks on, and the air is bled out of the cooling system, I just fill the reservoir up and remove the adapter cap and recap the radiator with the original cap back on.

Excellent work! Quick question tho of the old coolant wasn’t of a Honda brand do I have to flush it out first then replace with the new fluid? Or just drain and fill? Same question goes for the power steering.
Drain and refill it fine. Once you do it 3 times, it’ll be the original coolant in there.
NutzAboutBolts oh sweet! I’m a little nervous to do it on my own for the first time. What about the power steering? Should it be flushed or drain and fill is alright too?
Jennifer C yes, or you can just suck out the old fluid and refill. Do it every time it looks dirty instead of flushing it out. Up to you.
When you first fill upbefore you start up should heater valve be closed?
It looks like you just drained antifreeze from the radiator. What about the heater core and the rest of the coolant. Based on what you just did you'll be mixing old coolant with the new. Please let me know if I'm wrong.
Your right. The remainder is still in the block and the heater core.
Yeah. I'm gonna swap my coolant today and I'm gonna top up the coolant up with just water one or a few times and then let the engine run to get most of the stuff out without the need to get under the car to remove the drain bolt...
Do you turn on the heater full when you drain - to drain the coolant from the heater?
Are my fan suppose to come on I flushed my radiator and ran mine for like 15 mins and my fans didn’t come on until I turned on the ac both of them
If you let it idle, it’ll take 30 mins or so. When you turn the AC on, that’s not the radiator fan, that’s the condenser fan.
does the drain plug also drain the resivour tank? i have a 2015 accord 4 cyl. and want to do it myself rather then pay the dealer 200 to do it. the owners manual says it takes 1.5 gallons. Is that 1.5 gallons in the radiator, plus refilling the tank? Or is it 1.5 gallons in the radiator and tank? thanks!
my car is basically the same set up, with the small tank right next to the radiator
Touche :)
When you turn heater on how much time you let the heater
I have seen on other channels to get it up to normal heating (gauge) then let the cooling fans cycle on twice...

Tim Kwok
you can if you want to fully flush the cooling system. This vehicle coolant is OEM so the system still looks good since we've taken care of this vehicle well and didn't see any build up of sludge or grime. So we opted for coolant drain and refill. If you saw our other video on the honda civic, we did drain and refill 3 times with water to flush out the cooling system.
NutzAboutBolts How about draining the engine block by removing the thermostat?
Tamulmol Kainbaboy
You can do that, but its such a hassle because you'll have to do that 3 times with distill water like our civic video that we did. We would only do that if its really dirty and you see sludge in your cooling system.
When you first top off the radiator do you put any coolant into the reservoir?
No, whatever’s left in the funnel is what we put back in the reservoir and then top it off.

no, you will dilute the coolant even more to 25% and 75% water.... the 50/50 blue coolant is already mixed.

hello quick question...i did everything exactly what you said but for some reason the radiator fan never comes on, is that fine...i waited for like 30 min and nothing...
I had this same issue. the radiator fan only comes on with the AC button turned in, and even then it only clicks on for a few seconds, then off, then on a few seconds, etc. does anyone know why?
+theotful that's your condenser fan kicking on.
+tash lam if your upper radiator isn't hot to the touch, then your engine isn't hot enough for the radiator fan to kick on.
One question ? Before remove the radiator cap have to wait until the car cools down so doesn't xplode all the water outside ???
you would start this from when the engine is cold....
NutzAboutBolts ok ... but to remove the funnels have to wait until cold ???
yes, its fine the remove the funnel once you're done bleeding the air out of the cooling system. There was no radiator cap to begin with since we put an adapter there for the funnel.
i should have used Honda coolant. my 04 accord v6 water pump started leaking after only 50k miles. pep boys replaced timing belt kit and water pump and filled with prestone crap green coolant.

hi sir so i change my coolant and thermostat as well..
I waited like 5-10 minutes but the fun didn't turn on so I just turn on my heater (max) and waited my fun turn on but it didn't...
I have hot air and my temperature was on normal (drove it for 30 minutes)
why my fun didn't spin if I have my heater on?
Marck Jerney Viernes
I would recommend redoing your coolant drain and refill then. The reason your radiator fan doesn't turn on is because your engine isn't hot enough. Just make sure you're doing the job right, especially putting in the thermostat properly, or else it'll over heat if the nipple was placed in the wrong position.
+NutzAboutBolts
I had this same issue.

No, its that bottle right beside the radiator.
Nick V
well, we only recommend a flush if you have non OEM coolant in there that is causing mold in the cooling system. As for removing the fluid from the reservoir, you can pull it up and out from the place that its on. You don't need a turkey baster to suck it out since you can remove the reservoir and clean it out with clean water.

How long did you let it idle for?
I didn’t know you had to do all this!! Welp I guess I’m gonna Buy this kit right now

30 mins if its idle, 15mins if you rev it at 2k rpm, or drive it on the freeway until you hear the fan comes out.
Why do u have to turn on the heater?
I have got to get one of those funnels. I've been draining and flushing coolant in cars for the last 15 years with only a little 99-cent funnel that fits loosely in the radiator cap opening. It's terrible, always makes a mess.
yup, this funnel is a great investment. You will never spill any coolant again lol
Why can’t I have the heater on right away before the fans turned on?
Not 100% sure but Iy guess would be having heater(another coolant circuit open) would divert coolant away from motor and up into heater core which when not at 100% full capacity, could cause the motor to slightly overheat.
you forgot to drain the coolant outta the block. So you just mixed new coolant with the old. heater block plug is located on the passenger side above the wheel.

***** once the fan kicks on and you turn on the heater until you feel that its hot, usually about 10-15 seconds. Then you turn it off.
Is it better or necessary to do complete flush instead of drain/refill?
you do complete flushes to get rid of any left over gunk in the system. If your system is clean and you know there's nothing dirty in there, you can just do a drain and refill.
