  • A short video of a project we started recently, a bit slower pace this time.. Don't forget to turn on the CC for captions where i explain a bit more.
    House is 100 square meters plus the attic for storage. Cross section of wood elements is 6x16cm for wall, 6x20 ceiling and roof, 16x16 beams and posts. This type of build is not so common here in Croatia but it's getting more and more popular with each passing year, especially because of the building speed and structural resistance to earthquakes.. There is not so many difference to american style of building in this stage of the build, biggest difference is in cross section of elements and use of screws instead of nails. Later in the second episode, there will be a lot more differences, from roofing to outer and inner sheeting, thermal insulation, facade etc..
    Thank you for watching! If you liked this video, don't forget to press that thumb up icon and subscribe for more! :D

      Yes, KVH lumber is perfect for this purpose, we really rarely come across a plank that needs to be cut to short pieces due to being curved too much..

    Excellent video. Great job. Yes time is very precious when needing to get the roof on before rain. We do use screws here along with nails just like you do, it does depend on the local building code as to which is used where. Most places that have seismic activity require nails because they will flex more before breaking. Thanks for making and sharing this video. Glad to see you and your crew are doing well.

    This doesn't even come close to comparing to builds in the US. None of the wood is warped or cracked, There's no mud caked on any of the sheathing, everything looks to be square and plumb. Seriously... I have walked through many in process builds here and you'd be shocked at how poorly most US houses are built. Nice work fellas 👍

    • @lignumchannel
      @lignumchannel  Рік тому +2

      Thank you very much!:) To be honest, I was in the US in 2000 when I was a kid so I don't remember much of what I saw, we used to work with imported douglas fir from the US some 15 or more years ago and I remember it being really nice timber. Cross section was a bit unusual compared to what is standard here though.. I guess we had a good supplier. Glad you like the work!

      As a non-American, I am always amazed by the high timber price although the state has lots of trees. And I never understand they call 2x4 for 1,1/2"x3,1/2" and they aren't really dry tho. Their actual size of 2x6 is 1.5"x5.5". That's why we see their homes are made out of toothpicks. (I know there are custom timber and lvl manufacturers there)
      Among UA-camr builders, I like NS Builders (stick frame) , and RR Building (post frame).

    To je ludo. Sve skockano prije u radionici na mjeru, a onda samo kockice lijepo na gradilištu.

    As this new style of construction is growing in popularity, is there much resistance to use this technique from builders or owners, over the more traditional methods? When anything new comes along around here, in New Brunswick Canada where I live, it is impossible to find tradesmen who are willing to try it. Excellent video!

    • @lignumchannel
      @lignumchannel  Рік тому

      Yes, people here still prefer traditional ceramic blocks, mortar and concrete. This was a common method for close to a hundred years, tested by time and the saying here is "concrete is concrete" and people always quote that fairy tale about the wolf and three piglets :) Although really old houses took a bad hit during the last two earthquakes and people started to wonder a bit.. Younger people who live a quicker lifestyle and are more in touch with technology are more likely to try new, quicker methods of construction and we get more and more inquiries about it. My house was supposed to be just wood and concrete but wood prices skyrocketed so unfortunately I had to change the building system, the design just stayed the same.. Thank you very much, I'm glad you like the video:)

    Práce pěkná leč trochu zbytečně drahá volba materiálu.OSB je parobrzdný materiál takže by byla lepší rostlá suchá prkna a za ušetřené peníze dát pásky pod kontralatě a okapní plech na okapní hranu. Zkondenzovaná voda v podstřešním prostoru bude dělat neplechu. Pokud se ten podstřešní prostor neodvětrá tak se to osb bude rosit zespod.

    That's the house I'd like to have for myself! Some comments and questions:
    -in the US they just use vertical and horizontal elements. I have seen the walls have diagonal reinforcements: is this just temporary?
    -when you drive that long 8x240 screws do you drill a guide hole before?
    -how come that you can work on a roof without safety equipment? It's it allowed in your country?
    -this time the "music" is really disturbing (sorry!!!) Maybe next time Mozart or nothing? 😄😄😄
    Thank you, nice job! I would like to see the rest!
    🙏🏻🌞

      Let me pick one to answer: we carry safety harness only if do roof repair at rainy night, drunk and above 30ft. :D

    • @lignumchannel
      @lignumchannel  Рік тому +4

      Yes those are temporary braces, walls will be covered with 12 mm fermacell boards inside and outside and those boards will take eventual horisontal loads.
      Those screws have a notch at the top which acts as a drill bit and a clearing fins at the end of the helix so no pre-drilling is required.
      As for the safety, @Helloverlord kinda got some of it right;)
      Mozart is reserved for my house so next video should be to yours and my liking;)
      Thank you very much! I'm glad you like the project!:)

    • @lignumchannel
      @lignumchannel  Рік тому

      Not so hard as it looks:) They have a notch at the tip that acts as a drill bit and clearing fins at the end of the heliks so no pre-drilling is needed. It is quite satisfying driving them in, especially the longer ones of 40cm+ . These really do test the limits of battery drills..

    I worked in construction here in USA and the quality is ground poor. The only thing that contractors and companies care is about money and mass production. "Quality" is a word that no one knows or haven't hear about it. Is just sad to see such low quality here in the USA.
