Cleverly done. You found out all about the man's life through the photos, life on the sea, marriage, kids, simple development but important to give a familiarity to the main character. He had the feel that he' 'seen it all, been there done that' but then sees something fantastical and unique to him. The smile almost says...'well, life is still really full of surprises'. Think there was just one line in it, 'won't be long'. Direction was on point, and the acting beautifully understated. Great work.
Wow! Good sensible critique on a short piece! Makes me want to watch it again. 😎 What do you do for a living, writer?
That change of focus at 0:55! Absolutely stunning cinematographic story-telling!
True!
So much was said in every second, made me feel like, 'this could be anyone - me'.
Made my sensitivities jump to a new place.
🤓
I don't understand the film
@@alexkwan160 watch it again. and again, you will. It's just life, and the endless possibilities.
I really appreciate how suddenly and quietly the ship flew away. Almost every spaceship you ever see, when taking off or landing, is a fanfare of visuals and sound effects, but this broke that expectation in the most pleasing way.
🔵 The sonic boom that it made when it shot-upward could easily have been mistaken for thunder.
But the boat (and other detritus) should have fallen off the spaceship and back into the sea. That didn't happen.
@@LutherGaylord it was snagged by the anchor line.
Yes nice departure. Right up there with E.T. when the ship leaves and they de-tune the gravity phase compensator and make a rainbow. My all time favorite though is in Cocoon. I saw it in the theater and there was a sub-sonic undertone that played while the ship was leaving the Sol system under full star-dirve. It sent chills up my spine. You could just feel the power of the ship. While hovering over earth they were using less than 1% power, but in flight... WOW! You really got the impression that there was the power of an exploding sun contained in that ship. I have watched DVD and BluRay version and the under-tone is completely missing, such a shame. Some things can only be conveyed in a good theater.
@@frankreynolds445 Well, they would need some kind of intertial damping so the passengers aren't liquified by the gees.
In the top 3 of Dust shorts, no fuzz around, no unnecessary suspense, good story with a meaning, it deserves more likes .
Indeed
I have no idea what the story was trying to say but can't stop thinking about that.
I'm agree with you
@@darrinlalla9008 Perhaps he was just thinking, 'I've seen something no one else had,' and it gave his boring life a thrill?
A rare film in which every molecule of it is perfection: casting, close-ups, location, sounds of the "thing," the "thing," costume, music, every shot does it's job without wasting time being long-winded. What does it all mean; exactly what begins to show on his face at the end. It's a beautiful, perfect gem.
“Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.”
― Arthur C. Clarke
The second one is less terrifying. Heaven forbid flat earth and fundamental religion were right
I feel really alien to earth and get goosebump every time I see Space ships or terraforming or interstellar travel, which feels like a deeply hidden memory from past lives. Yoga says old souls have already been in this universe 100s or 1000s of times (on their journey home to god, into eternity, the limitless self, our true nature if you trust in Vedanta). Who knows on how many planets. An old sanscrit Mantra says: Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu "May everyone, in all the worlds (/on all the planets), be happy.“
@@m.b.82 neither makes religion any more correct.
@@liberalguy513 Spirituality is religion minus dogma. Vedanta is a spirituality minus experience. Religion is only the beginning...
@Scribble Scrable Louis Elizondo from Pentagon who spoke on CNN, New York Times and so on has other opinion.
The small boat and anchor sitting on the ship was a nice touch.
Was wondering whether it was an old boat that he'd lost!?!
And ya noticing them is also a nice thing
@@stevie-ray2020 or an old anchor ⚓ he had cast at the foundry in his younger days. They forgot to show us that one photo/flashback)
@@andriyshapovalov8886 I saw the pictures indicating his past as a sailor, where was his metalworking implied?
Yes! That only lends credence to my theory, based on his "ha, so I was right" kind of look at the end, that he'd seen this ship years ago during his days as a sailor--perhaps the boat was from his ship--but he didn't quite fully believe it at the time, dismissing it as a dream or hallucination/optical illusion. Now he's seen the spaceship again, remembers the incident in his past, and realizes he actually saw an alien spaceship twice in his life.
The cat: "You saw it...
didn't you?"
I loved the story, a man at the end of a full life, just marking time waiting for the end, no more expectations. Then realizing there is still wonder in the world to be enjoyed if you will only just open your eyes and look and listen.
Wayne Campeau - Hey Wayne..... good take! Also.... check your spelling. (wounder = wonder ?)
@@GordyInMA *sigh* There's always one. Dude, I would suggest you get that under control because no alien likes a grammar nazi
@@GordyInMA dude, I just thought he is British! And then you went and made him edit his post.....
Excellent job deciphering this one I was wondering what this one meant
@@persephoneshades8970 Helping people with minor spelling errors can be done in a positive way. I have a very large vocabulary and quite good spelling, but, yes, even so, blasted typos. I appreciate when people point out when my fingers have slipped or I've mispelled something that should have been obvious.
That smile at the end was priceless.
I honestly thought he might cry
He had his Sunday fulfilled.
@@adamh.7297 Priceless = Of infinite & unquantifiable value.
I think the old man liked whales/dolphins😊
so bizarre I once took a wrong turn on holiday in Cornwall, and ended up at that very house. Had to check an old photo to confirm it matched
The details were incredible. The Cornish blue cup, the cat the dog, the denim pouch, the boat on the ship... so many more. Amazing
ha! - you're the only person yet that's pointed out the blue cup representing Cornwall! I didn't think any one would spot it when I put it in the shot. Top marks and a gold star!
David Lea I would love to know where the house is. I remember watching an early 80’s episode of Dr who and then being outside our house in the dark about 200m from the sea in Polzeath and being terrified of aliens coming out of the sea.
The boat (and other detritus) should have fallen back into the sea when the spaceship took off.
The cat acting is totally underrated, by far the best of the cast. Just look at those eyes 5:45
Cats _are_ the best actors. My cats will be looking at me and then suddenly look behind me and make me turn around. They get me every time.
Unlike most Dust films, it has an ending. It resolves. I really appreciated that.
I liked that the ship was rather dilapidated. It looked like it had been on the bottom for a long time.
Activated by the lightning strikes? Marvelous use of actors, both human and animal. Lots of little
items acting as clues, nice. His reaction was spot on, "Oh and I saw a huge alien ship rise out of the sea
just a bit ago." I don't think so, because when you see such a thing, what are you to do? It's gone and
all you are left with is an unbelievable story.
No, I think it was called up by the Mothership. Hidden in the clouds. I like how it 'stumbled' when it first came up.
Alien junk man...
That guys face tho.... Mind Blown, perception of the universe forever changed. Love it!
I love the fact that this 'show' is not about the aliens. It's about the impact seeing them has on this man's life.
Amen to that!
What impact?
Basically it's just about that one encounter.
@@davidstoyanoff It made the old man smile about what he saw.
He's not over excitable
Going through all the Dust shorts now, and this is my absolute favourite so far. Told from a relatable, everyman perspective; hinting at a much larger lore without showing too much; beautifully simple in it’s concept and execution; creative special effects that don’t overdo it - reminds me and takes me back to the moment when the space truckers found the “jockey” in Alien... my favourite moment of sci fi cinema.
This short is brilliant
I had the same thought regarding Alien and why it resonated so well throughout the years. No explanation of how or why. Just wonder.
Sadly, films such as Prometheus and Alien: Covenant take that mystery away.
That old wooden rowboat sitting on top of the right side of the ship. It’s gonna be the first rowboat in space!😁😁😳
Was wondering whether it was an old boat that he'd lost!?!
Ooh! My Haha...
Haha we gave you that image
The boat should have fallen off...
This is the best story I have seen or read in a long, long time. I don't have a single quibble. Nothing was out of place or unsatisfying or felt wrong. The actors were perfect, including the cat and dog (Nice work with the cat's paw twitch and the sound of the dog sniffing, by the way).
Also, I deeply appreciate the strength to trust that our attention spans can be held for longer than five minutes without dialogue or explosions.
Totally agree!!!! 👍👍👍
Sorry but I like stories with explanations. And that was one beat up looking spaceship. Don't see how it even flew with all the holes in it.
Does not take much to please some people. The advantages of the simple minded.
🇵🇷BORI! LMAO fuck outta here!!! Is that really how u feel...awwww...
Simple, gorgeous, beautiful.
Well done.
Honey...l found our old boat. FANTASTIC! well done, watched several times..never gets old.
Something I'd forgotten until now - my late father used to have many vivid dreams about huge machines just like this one, all flying around with bits hanging. Thanks for the memory.
Depending on what his age was, that would play a lot into the "Fantastic Tales" type stories of the 20's - 70's
"vivid dreams " eh? you don't say ..
Huge library over here.
Perhaps your father knew or was on to something that he never shared with anyone.
Plot twist: those were not dreams.
Bravo,, Dust. Says it all without uttering a word. More positive and imaginative works like this bring Sci Fi to its pinnacle.
Brilliant springs to mind 🤗
So long, and thanks for all the fish!

Oh, stupid Dust!!!
The whole time you see all the dangly bits underneath and coming out of the bottom I was thinking about the designs of the vogon ships(ship, rather, they are all the exact same ship)
Apparently, they saw the plans down at the local planning office.
Don't forget your towel
I had an incredible feeling it was about to fall back into the sea when the lights went dark. Fido wasn't around to meet ET... LoL! The dog's gaze out to sea was captivating...
That change of focus at 0:55! Absolutely stunning cinematographic story-telling!
Peaceful, gentle, hopeful, and just plane heart-warming in so many ways. With just the right amount of subtle humor. More like this please :)
This was EXCELLENT! The directing, the editing, the lighting, the setting, the man, the dog, and especially the ship. WOW!
I think the dog was the best
I think that boat stranded on the alien ship was a nice detail. Well done!
What about the cat?
Don't forget the cat!
Gee! I agree!
The sunken boat stranded on one of the rotting domes was a good touch
But the boat (and other detritus) should have fallen back into the sea when the spaceship took off.
@@LutherGaylord Your right, that would have been an even better touch.
I absolutely loved the small dingy just hanging out on the space craft. I also appreciated that the ship was by no means pristine. What a fantastic short all around. There was a lot of depth crammed into a few moments. Great work team!
Okay. It does stand alone and be a story. Pretty good trick. I don't like stories with questions left hanging, but the end could not be any other way. There is nothing BUT questions, and I enjoyed it. Kudos all round. Great work.
James Paden The best stories always leave you with questions 👍
@@UkDave3856 I think the questions were answered. @4:53 there is a boat, including anchor, caught up in the ship. I thought, my word, that's the man's boat! He encountered this ship at one time, and escaped with his life. My two cents.
Some of my best stories are incomplete.
A good story in a film or game (visual mediums are better at this) leave you with questions, but provide enough information to answer most of them. This is so you look deeper, and find connections you might not have noticed.
It's all there, you just need to find it.
Those don't work for all stories (some work better with the bare minimum information given), but it's certainly a way to increase interaction and retention
Super! The soothing shipping forecast belied the astonishing drama to come. Just loved that spaceship.
So simple just like life. You see or notice something that nobody else does. It passes and you're left with you own thoughts because it's not something you're going to talk about for whatever reasons.
Just subscribed to the Dust Newsletter, entered my details, had to confirm "I'm not a robot", laughed. 😉
Rusty barnicle covered alien ship, full of holes, barely operational... and a little boat, sunk long ago, trapped on the alien ships skin, tiny anchor swinging... such a powerful vision. Then the ship gears up.... and leaves. Called to home?
The mans utter silence, shocked into freezing... then that smile. We are not alone. There is more than we can know. What will tomorrow bring? Thats my take. We all put our own feelings into such a powerful event. Wonderful movie. Just perfection.
I keep coming back to this "On Sunday" short. The old man's response to that Alien ship was so incredibly restrained. My reaction would have been more like the dogs. Great job David Lea.
Maybe once you reach a certain age you just don't care as much anymore. Like it would be worth dying a few years earlier just to see and experience what nobody else has.
@@wamyx8Nz Thank John. Since I'm 68 I guess I can agree. I hope I live long enough to discover if there is intelligent life elsewhere in the universe. God knows there is so little of it here on Earth.
Sometimes you are the only witness to a wonder. I love that this fellow quietly savors this stupendous even
The beauty of these short films is that they keep it simple and leave room for speculative discussion, which is part of the fun. Good writing keeps you asking questions, but at the same time you don't want the mystery to be over, because once the mystery is over, the fun is over.
The smile on the old guy's face at the end, though... Once over the initial shock, and the realization of what he saw hitting home was classic; an old man in the twilight of his life found new joy and child-like wonder in something alien and inexplicable.
Do you know, how to known a good movie? You look at him again and again. And you're discovering new details. Perfect details. Dr.
Great cinematography, VFX and locations. A great story about how our tiny little world can be blown wide open by just one event. Keep up the brilliant work DUST!
I love this film, David: not only is it technically accomplished, it's also a beautiful and heartfelt tribute to your dad.
Thank you. ☝️😎
Patrick Selden - Awesome special effects!
@@GordyInMA Yeah... 👍😊
One of the best ever from DUST.
Loved the mystery of the whole set of conditions, especially that ship.
Omfg the cinematography is so beautiful in this short
EXCELLENT! I absolutely loved this one! Well done!
0.0-3.24: character study. He's a fisherman. 3.25-5.50 spaceship appears, makes sound like a whale then dissapears. Pipe drop clearly demonstrates this is unexpected. 5.50 to end: aftermath. Noone is gonna believe him cos hes a fisherman. Cute story. Decent cgi. Nicely self contained and no dialogue. Its a nice play on the fishermans 'it was THIS big' trope. Nice touches were the broken equipment, the boat anchor, lovely battered look with broken, rusted panels, dripping water and the sound effects.
Well done! The close-ups were vital to the story. I can hear his wife say now "Oy! Where's the boat gone off to? You've forgot to tie it off from the storm!"
🔵 if I am to understand what you're referring to, that rowboat/Skiff sitting on top of the spacecraft (@ 4:53) had obviously been sitting on the bottom of the ocean floor for quite some time, if you look at it carefully you can see that it's QUITE rotted-away and could NOT have been floating at any time recently, it CAN'T be the same boat that his wife said must have floated away from not being tied off.
@@joshhayl7459 The boat (and other detritus) should have fallen back into the sea when the spaceship took off.
I kinda like doug's version better..
@@LutherGaylord,
🔵 I agree!... but perhaps whatever force field prevents the ship from losing Integrity from sudden acceleration held all the debris against the ship as it took off.
LutherGaylord - Nope, it was too well tied down.
What else could the man do but keep his mouth shut.
Apart from insisting someone survey the area that the ship was hiding - there would be no other evidence.
And the way the ship just hung there and then suddenly shot up into space ... jaw dropping.
Yeah, what would /could he say.
He'd only be ridiculed and accused of making it up.
His smile at the end suggests he's quite happy just knowing for himself he'd seen it.
His smile at the end was just gas.
I appreciate the fact this was uploaded 27th April and the "day that is shown" was 28th April. Nice little detail.
Nice little story of a man expecting nothing new any more. Just same old same old.
And after, realizing there are still wonders and new experiences out there, that smile. Looking forward to life again :D
this is a thing of beauty. truly. thank you, david.
Everything was great, and I really liked the fact that ship left in almost silence.
Seeing something like that would make anyone question their whole existence.
The man hadde a crackpipe what did you expect
Swell! The man was flabbergusted (or flubbergasted). Blessed are the animals, as they are accustomed to miracles.
Jawah Arlal I like that, pretty little phrase
The word I would use is "Gobsmacked".
For a second after it went quite I thought it broke down and was going to fall back in the sea. But then it shot off in a flash. That was great.
Same.
You can read volumes on his face. On the way out, he's just going through the motions. Nothing ever changes. He sees the ship and he's thinking 'What? How?' Then the ship is gone and he's sitting at home thinking 'I can't even tell anyone. They'll think I'm mad! But I know what happened to that old rowboat!'
exactly the right amount of each very special thing. And, I like the cat.
EXCELENT. I LOVE SF. SO DOES MY SON. I AM LITERATURE PROFESSOR. GREETINGS FROM AN URUGUIAIN LIVING IN BRAZIL!
The dog's acting was perfect.
Reminds me of that time I was canoeing the Allagash near Round Pond....
What you need for a good movie:
Old man, rough sea, doggo, a friggin alien ship which dissapears in a second
5:58 Oldman Last smile "WE ARE NOT ALONE IN THIS UNIVERSE "
That was exceptional on every level !
Did anyone notice all the trash hanging off the ship? fishing buoys, the boat obviously, an anchor, a giant screw, so many things.
what a really skilled actor, very subtle.
True!
So much was said in every second, made me feel like, 'this could be anyone - me'.
Made my sensitivities jump to a new place.
🤓
I like how it didnt have a loud fiery dramatic presence.
Just kind of sat there, then silently fucked off.
I like the look on the cat's face when the clock chimed and the look on the dog's face at the end, when he glanced over at the man, kind of said it all.
It's incredible how much can said with no words and six minutes.
best six minutes spent on a screen (18 actually, as I watched this short three times in a row) ever. Brilliant, great acting too
Beautiful attention to detail. Complete fantasy and yet so real with all the rusty junk hanging down. Watched it twice and paused several times to take it all in. And no daunting music to create tension - it was not needed at all. Wasn’t there a reference to Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea?
It looks like the kind of spaceship, Bad Robot would build...with loose bits of screw and metal piping hanging around...
He smiles at the end because he finally knows the answer to “are we alone?”...
Did anyone else notice the anchor hanging from the bottom of that thing? lol
The one that was attached to the wrecked boat lying on top of the 'engine' - yes I saw that. AND followed the chain back to the boat with my eyes.
Alien ship designers just finished watching District 9.....
First thought I had when I saw the ship!
Simple, but effective. Well acted.
No I do not want to watch this in 360p Dust is too good to watch in 360p. 1080p only!
How do you even do this? Even if its CGI its AMAZING.
4K, please. :)
Even in the sunset of your life, the adventure continues.
An excellent short film. Everything is just like it was before, but now it is so different.
I don't blame the old guy for crying at the end. If I had seen that I would have pooped my pants.
He's thinking nope don't say a word they'll send a rubber truck for me..
I like the faintest glimmer of a smile in the end.
This channel is the BEST
These short videos are fantastic , thought provoking and say alot about how we live our lives, especially this one
I have done many years working outdoors and have seen many things i cannot explain
absolutely brilliant!!!! thought-provoking!! wonderfully done!!!!
Was one of the first Dust videos I watched. I half dismissed it at the time, but re-watched it a couple of times since, and this time absolutely "get it".
The video hasn't changed, so maybe I have.
I hope the team that made it went on to bigger and better things.
Class.
Now that would be a fish tale
Another absolute gem! Well done all involved.
Superb. I love the rowing boat lodged on the craft.
I know the feeling... when you see it. When the question has been answered. When you know the truth.
Then you do the stupid thing and tell people what 'truth' you know. Suddenly there you are in a secure unit, screaming "I saw them, they are coming! they are coming for all of us!"
Excellent ! I like the tension you feel all along the film, especially when something happens into the sea and the man doesn't see it. Great ! The whole story in the silence of words, but so expressive...
This is the kind of directing and creativity that should b in Hollywood.Well done!
This is one of my favorites.
Reminded me of the only UFO sighting I had outside the city of Winnemucca, Nevada in May of 1977.
Not s single word said and I heard everything, impressive
At 4:53 there is a wrecked boat, perched over the right, larger arm of the spaceship.
Is that, maybe, the boat of his son lost at sea? Is that the reason he goes there when a storm is coming? Is that the reason he smiles at the end?
Great short movie. Wonderful! I loved it!
Super film. Arcydzieło. Mnóstwo treści w krótkim czasie. Ciągle do niego wracam.
In movies- no matter how far- the thunder will be in sync with lightning- no delay in sound. :D
I once talked at length to a chap who said he saw something like this. We were on a “twos and blues” driving course to qualify for driving a fire engine. Over the course of some days I asked him a lot of questions. The instructor was not at all interested. I have no reason to think he was fibbing. In fact since then I have discovered he still has nightmares about it.
Was wondering whether that was an old boat that he'd lost, & he's just thinking to himself; "Ah, so that's where that old dinghy of mine ended up!"
i swear this channel is proof that all you need is some good freaken writing
nice little film...i think one day many of us might just have this kind of experience
I do not do drugs ... so I'll miss out.
I half expected the thing to fall back into the Sea, and the old man shrugs.
