Mike D ...very true! I just can't get my head around the price tag vs what you get in a vette....and most street racing is light to light....maybe a little more! The interiors are very lacking vs. the price tag! GM I think is in trouble, mid engine vette is frankly ugly, just like the Camaro..it's sad! But you know what they say about opinions!!!

Brian Bouch I don’t think so to be honest, the guy who wants a Ferrari or a Lamborghini won’t be convinced that a Corvette is the better buy. Now don’t get me wrong, it is an amazing update for Corvette people, but let’s not get delusional.

Valerie Rodger it’s just that these kind of cars, including the corvette, have a certain following, a millionaire who grew up listening to his father fantasize about the corvette won’t buy a Ferrari either, just like an average guy who grew up playing with Ferrari toys will buy the cheapest one no matter how bad they are.

Agreed, I would be really disappointed if they went with a V6. I am not really against a V6 but if they go that direction costs & vomplexity will go up, reliability etc will go down.
We all love the Corvette because you can get a solid 500hp in a relatively affordable, low tech V8 that will last a long time without excessive maintenance.
If they start going hi tech, smaller displacement, they will lose the heart of the Corvette. Keep it a car that you don't need to be wealthy to afford and can still put numbers down with the best of them while driving it every day. There is still lots to be said for big dumb muscle. It gets the job done for far less money.

Imagine, the first gen NSX sold for $80,000.00. Let that sink in. I was most impressed with GM's effort to ensure that the Corvette lost none of its daily driving capabilities and usability. Maybe a lot of viewers glossed over the part about the ultra-lightweight fiberglass material developed for the storage compartments, but the idea of placing actual luggage in a rear trunk just inches from a fire-breathing 500hp V8 and have it not spontaneously combust is astounding! What other mid-engine car can do a sub 3 second run to 60 mph AND carry luggage for two while doing it? Are there any? Tell me the price, then!
To my thinking, it's not the car that's the most incredible thing about this launch, but it's the collection of manufacturers, suppliers, industrial designers, ad infinitum, that produce this very customizable performance car for 1/3 the price of anything else we yearn for with anywhere near its capabilities. Those other marques had to be peeing their collective pants last night!

The writer went on to explain that Chevy is just about at its limits to front engine, even though they went on to make the most incredible Corvettes with this most recent 7th Gen, but to really compete with the European and Japanese grand touring cars, they needed a mid engine design and most thought Chevy would never have the balls to do this. But Chevrolet managed to take this radically different layout and present it in such a way that it is still unmistakably a Stingray yet completely revolutionary at the same time. Call a doctor! @@lesliehoward8981 thank you for this question, I would consider Junior sports cars as Miatas, BMW Z4, Toyota 86 and that style of smaller displacement cars up to and including the 370z and even the new Supra, these cars are, in my mind usually four and six-cylinder powered cars, absolutely fun to drive but a smaller style of sports car. Senior sports cars would be all Lamborghinis, Ferraris the Corvettes certainly McLaren's and of course hyper exotic such as Bugattis and Pagani's. GM are really putting competitors on notice. Will await the initial reviews and also mindful of previous quality issues, but on what has been shown so far, GM have really done their homework.

Just imagine throwing two turbos even two small turbos on this car! We already know that's a 6.2 L can handle it the only thing and only question will be the transmission and if it can handle that kind of upgrade in power! Truly an exciting time and with the extra luggage room this will make it again a practical sports car and very surprisingly so with the mid-engine layout.

As a Porsche owner, I am glad to see they finally are delivering a mid engined car. This is a huge poke in the eye to Porsche and Audi. McLaren, Ferrari and other supercars won't be affected because they are a higher level marque, more of a status symbol than practical transportation. (You don't daily drive a Ferrari because a brake job can easily cost $40k; happened to a friend of mine) Porsche and Audi (the R8) are mid engine performance cars meant to be daily drivers. This undercuts them at a price point tens of thousands of dollars lower and that it makes it hard to even consider buying a Caymen or Boxster. They are essentially the same weight, but big V-8 HP versus fairly small (and under powered) flat 6. The best thing Chevy can do to improve this is to offer a flat plane crank V-8, that would be the final nail in Porsche's coffin. For people asking for a double clutch instead of a hydro automatic, the hydro automatic is a dependable design, it lasts 200k miles. A double clutch, is only good for 80k miles or so. They are a lot of used out of warranty R-8 and Porsches out there with PDK transmissions needing a $45k rebuilt PDK. No parts are available for repair. You ship back the sealed unit and buy a remanufactured sealed unit. If you open the PDK, you just lost a $25K core charge.

The huge bump in acceleration comes a lot more from the automatic transmission and the aggressive gearing ratios than the placement of the engine. The engine placement might help put load on the rear wheels but its more about handling and weight balance. If the 8 speed automatic dual clutch is replaced with a 6 speed it will immediately blow up that sub-3 second 0-60mph number.
