The 2020 Chevrolet Corvette is a monumental shift in the car's design. For the first time ever, a production Corvette will be mid-engine, with the engine placed behind the driver, and be equipped with an 8-speed dual clutch transmission. The C8 Corvette features a naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 producing 495 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque with the optional performance exhaust. With the engine's torque, the transmissions speed, and the Michelin PS4S tire's grip, a quick 0-60 time was inevitable.
But power and grippy tires can only do so much for acceleration when your design is limited by weight transfer. And the previous ZR1 Corvette, with it's insanely fast sub-3 second 60 mph speed, was limited by simple physics. If you can't get enough of the weight of a car onto the driven wheels, acceleration will suffer. By moving the engine back on the new Corvette, the acceleration potential is greatly improved. Check out the video for 0-60 predictions, braking distance predictions, and a fascinating overview of the 2020 Corvette Stingray.

NEW VIDEO EVERY WEDNESDAY!
To all future and current math teachers out there. I would not have fallen asleep during class if you had been using cars and rockets for examples to explain why we need to understand equations.
Lol 😆 lol! Hilarious! I agree totally.
Thats easy to say the older your get and find the stuff you are really into. I taught math like this and the kids in high school couldn't care less. You might get that one kid or two that likes cars and appreciate it but for the most part, just like normal adults, they make up maybe 5-10% of the population that are enthusiasts.
We did this in physics class
I think the kids of today would use the adjective, and capitalization of the word as used in my example,
*SAVAGE!*
Keith Jackson Most math teachers lack basic social skills. That is why people hate math class.
Finally chevy got them round tires, I knew they would get there eventually.
Round tires are a new thing - low production run performance tires traditionally have more hand work in them = not as round as you'd like.

@R A Hi! Lotus fan here. Lotus' are not supercars by any stretch of the word. They are mid-engined and (somewhat) affordable, but there are very few Lotuses (or none at all) that pull numbers which would rival modern supercars. Good numbers, yes. Supercar numbers, no. Your statement contains a bit of hyperbole.
Let's see what numbers this new Vette puts down on the track, then we can determine the performance/cost=value proposition (i.e. - better than a lotus, on par with a lotus, or worse than a lotus at X price compared to Lotus' Y price).

@@FullmetalC5 I wonder if the tires melt and act like glue. I was seeing a video last night and The way they deform in slow motion is crazy - it feels like the tire mechanically locks itself to the road through those wrinkles rather than rolling on it.
@@srinitaaigaura right, well, drag strips are prepped with a sticky compound that does act a bit like glue, and doing a burnout does rapidly heat up the tire and the track surface making it extremely sticky. But the wrinkles in the tire are why I said the tires don't have much air in them, extremely low air pressure so when they take off the tire doesn't slide across the ground, it flattens down because with less air the tires aren't hard, they're very squishy, so they squish down and grip the track.

Ford doesn't seem to have a problem selling their GT for that price, which makes me wonder why GM doesn't try to sell theirs for more. Could they sell for $500k? Maybe sell even more at $58k? I'm not criticizing Corvette (well, maybe the C5) or GM, just wondering aloud.
$60k for the base model. After all the upgrades I'm sure you are looking at $80-90K for the tripped out version. Then take it to Shelby and spend another $30-40K for customization.
The fact that they're aimed at different markets aside, no the C8 is most definitely not faster around a track than the GT. The GT is lighter, more powerful, and has way more aggressive aero to keep it planted around corners at higher speeds.

Power, acceleration, and grip. 👍 answered the question
First American car model that I am going to place an order. Great job 2020 Corvette team.
meanwhile, tesla does it in 2.4 seconds... oh... wait. dammit, theyre the same price. ok vette, you win this round... until the tesla roadster comes out!! oh wait... thats 250,000.... nvm vette... you win the war.
in all reality, as a tesla fan, chevy did a number here....
Yeah and you can drive in a countryside, mountains, rural places, not be tracked, not wait more than 3 minutes to have 350 more miles fuel.
Moment of silence
Which Tesla goes from standing still to 60mph in 2.4s?
Tesla has 5 seats?
@@Simpletonwithadog "Which Tesla?"
On the white board - "Tyres are round".... Ahhh, THATs where I've been getting it wrong all these years! Thanks Jason! :-D
Corvette has always been a fast car for a relatively cheap price (when compared to supercars). The issue has always been build quality, especially interior quality.
Just cost cutting I suppose. The C8 looks like the quality has improved significantly. I recently sat in the C7 and the interior definitely felt cheap.
It's crazy how close the 2020 looks like the 1986 Corvette concept car... both mid-engines
Thank you for these videos. I was one of those kids in school who said about math " what am I going to use this for"? And " I'll never need to know this". Then I got into cars and needed to know math. Then I got into commercial HVAC and needed to get a tutor and then further teach myself math to be proficient in my trade. I see you don't post much on your other channel, it would be cool to see you geek out on math there and show how to work through these problems. I believe that could get some kids interested in STEM and show them being smart can win you races and get you a high paying job.
No jason, you're dead wrong. Because the Earth is flat, tires must also be flat, not round.
Since you know everything you should start you own UA-cam channel 🤷♂️
@@stevenyia2778 You are incredibly gullible lol
hellobooom r/woosh
because tires are filled with air, they have a flat spot to meet the flat earth. Those of us in cold climates might be familiar with how that flat spot stays flat for the first few miles in the winter...
You do understand that the flat earth model is round right?
Don't try to tell me how excited I am! UNSUB!
I AM MOR EXC1T3D!
Good for you 😂
@@EngineeringExplained LOL
Watching your videos makes me realize how much I like math, and how much it excites me. Too bad I’m studying Corporate Finance and not Mechanical Engineering.
"some people don't like math"
Why are they here then??
Math at us, Mr. Fenske!
C7 Z06/Z07 with 8-speed auto 0-60 2.95 seconds. C7 ZR1/ZTK with 8-speed auto 0-60 2.85 seconds.
As a mechanical engineer and current Corvette owner, I love the math and the predictions for my future Corvette! Good job sir.

This is the best video I've seen all year explaining why the rear-engined Porsche 911 is the ultimate sports car.
I liked this video a lot, and your enthusiasm (especially about the math) made it even better!
I can't see Chevy not adding a stick in the future. I;m sure they won't be abandoning their pure enthusiasts base.
sweet innocent child....
@@andrewmalaty8 yeah, Chevy I can see doing this, a company like Subaru or BMW I can't
It’s nice to see a Corvette UA-cam video without drooling and someone saying that they’re definitely going to buy one. As always, very well thought out and explained. I especially liked the dual clutch explanation. Makes sense when you say it!
Cliff Notes.
Corvette achieves quickest 0-60 time due to:
• Wide, sticky rear tires
• 495hp, torquey V8 engine
• 8-speed dual-clutch trans
• Better weight distribution
one thing he failed to mention is how much new golf clubs weigh, thats going to have a massive effect on performance headed to the track,...errr i mean the course.
What you get for 60k is pretty incredible
I’m a ford guy but lately the new camero and now this corvette looks like a sexy beast
Jason only knows all of this information ... because secretly, he was the chief engineer on the project.
That car looks like a BOOTLEG 458 😂💀🤣.
I think this is going to be a hit for chevrolet. Fast, capable, auto, value and Murica.
Very Good Jason but, what about lateral Gs and shifting weights now that it has not the 50/50 weight distribution ?
We will Love to see Your Math first and then the Facts in a test drive.
Same question was going on my mind. It might help with oversteer but I think it will be more likely to understeer. Also i think that mid engine configuration make it harder to maintain
Rear bias, not 50/50, is actually ideal for a performance car.
@@verdict1163 can you explain the reason why performance car would be better off with a rear bias, I am just curious
@@nice1149ss the front is light so it turns in easy then the heavy ass brings the rear round to follow. The opposite would be heavy turn in and no inertia in the ass
Can we discuss if the car will experience what is called snap oversteer or if it will be a problem experienced with the new mid engine placement? And how it can be overcome
That hasn't been a problem with an actual mid engine vehicle that I know of. The 911 hasn't had that issue since the 991 when they moved the engine just inside the rear axle which made it a true mid engine. GM won't say it but the biggest advantage is the C8 will actually hook up and go now and it will also change directions very fast with the mid engine.
This video will sway more potential buyers per view than any Chevy tv marketing campaign
Now ford is going to have to explain what the Ford GT cost 9.4 times more expensive.
They will not have to explain anything. They are all sold out and will increase in value. The same cannot be said for corvettes.
The gt is a liiiiiiiitle bit faster on a track
Exclusivity, nostalgia.
@@EK-rr2md they have already sold out or are close to apparently
