The Texas coast has a bad reputation. I can see why.
I explored Corpus Christi, Texas for a couple of days. I think half this city is rundown and very dangerous.

I retired to this beautiful city. I've a beach house up on stilts fairly new. I adore this section of Corpus Christi. I've never regretted moving here.
I love this city. I've lived thier once and in Aransas pass twice. I'm from Oregon and as a teenager I lived near port Aranass for a couple of years and it was truly the time of my life it must of been 1993-1995. I returned back to corpus to be homeless in 2017 I was in a bad headspace found myself going thru midlife mental breakdown. And for me it I lived in the fountain across from whataburger by the bay. I was able to get by with just my personality never had any trouble went fishing got a job. Meet a few good friends but most of all I found myself regained my confidence and found out why it's the body of christ. I've since moved back to Oregon have a great job now making 6 figures a years and it was all due to building my confidence back knowing I was strong enough to beat the streets of corpus. I can beat anything I will always have a special place in my soul for this beautiful city where you can learn that no matter who you are everybody in corpus has been down and out most know where the mission is and have stayed there
I’m from Dallas and Corpus Christi (body of Christ) is like my own little escape from the city, I love it there moving in July👍🏽
@@SouthTexasLiving thank you
13:38 correct Nick but more specifically, it’s Mississippi River water. The current in the gulf flows counterclockwise so you’ll notice Galveston is the brownest waters. Corpus (summer) and padre most of the year are more blue. It’s not dirty, just silt carried from as far as Canada
That makes sense why the waters in the Florida Panhandle are some of the most dazzling turquoise and clear in the country. I always wondered why those beaches were so nice, but other Gulf beaches generally suck..
All the Mississipi water with its pesticides, that combines with the Gulf chemicals produce a gigantic dead zone in the ocean. Not mentioned in the video, some families on the coastal bend used to make a living shrimping and catching oysters a few decades ago. Not anymore...
Was gonna say, I go to mustang Island every summer and the water is pretty blue. I grew up near south Padre and the beach accesses have pretty blue/clear water 20 miles out, but most of the year, the bay looks solid green
Nick, the fact that it is the Gulf Coast currents is correct. You should have been there after Katrina....Plus you didn't let the viewers know where you were in Corpus. Padre Island with their canal houses. Flour Bluff (interesting name) for folks who cannot afford the Island. Also home to HEB along with Whataburger...
That's the Bay, not the Gulf.
Farah Fawcett, Lou Diamond Plillips and Selena are from Corpus Christi. Freddy Fender also retired here. ✌🏼🤟🏼🇺🇸
Yes! Farrah went to same Ray High School Mom did. We have a real photo of of her w/Lee Majors. The Jonas Brothers & Post Malone lived near me (Dallas at the time) Tons of celebrities are from Texas! Jamie Foxx is.
Jamie Foxx & Many other famous people are from Tx. I was shocked to see how many. I moved to Calif & they said "Texas girls are different. (Better!) Tougher, not whining nor wanting gifts & so many are superficial
Don't forget the beautiful Lori Singer.
not to mention Walter Furley
Farrah has family in Hillsboro, Texas. I, always thought she was born in Hillsboro and raised in Corpus Christi.
Great memories of Corpus Christi that’s where I started my 30 year airline career as a ramp agent with SWA I was there when the USS Lexington sailed in that day for its final home I was there when Selena was shot and killed I learned to fly there got my private pilot license in 1994 oh yeah and that’s where I met an 18 year old girl named Lynda Sue when I was 24 years old she is now 62 I’ll be 68 in March and we’re still together.
Yay George!! ❤️❤️❤️
@@NickJohnson Keep up the good work Nick Iv seen all your vids from California to Virginia.
I took my kids (who weren’t even in school yet) to see the Lexington sail into Ingleside Home port. They are now in their 30’s. I’m still surprised that Corpus actually made it work. We don’t want to remember what happen to the Columbus ships 🤦🏼♀️. Lived there all my life until 3 years ago and moved up to San Antonio. Once you leave you realize how bad it really was
Lucky guy!
Aside for business and job wise sounds like u had a great career at Corpus Christi. But what it has to offer to everyone living here there’s not much that can be said.
Better to be a struggling beach town than a rust belt ghost town with no struggles left like where I'm from
Rust let looks rough and dry too
Facts!😂😂
Your from the Midwest?
nope, weird Texas by Galveston
right! we can always go fishing, which is pretty good around here.
Corpus has always struggled. But so have all the communities along the Gulf here in Texas, like Galveston as well as other smaller places along the coast. It's the hurricanes that keep them from reaching their full potential. I grew up near Galveston and left as soon as I finished college. Got tired of the hurricanes and tropical storms. Moved further inland in Texas. I go to Corpus a lot. It really does have a lot of potential. And it's not actually on the Gulf of Mexico like Galveston. It's actually on Corpus Christi Bay. The real ocean and beach along the Gulf of Mexico is about 10 miles further out to the east on the barrier islands of Padre Island and Mustang Island. Those beaches are much, much nicer. And yeah, just about everyone in Texas loves Buc-ee's!
How often do hurricanes occur?
@@amberdonnelly3410not too often. Last hurricane we had was Harvey in 2017. Hurricanes are not a major struggle. They’re barely even a struggle. We don’t get hurricanes in the gulf because the water is too warm and it pushes the hurricanes away or something? Idk. Science.
We do have quite a few tropical storms during the hurricane season, but we don’t have actual hurricanes
I was born and raised in Corpus. Back in the ‘50s, 60s, and early ‘70s, it was a pretty good place to live. Time and circumstances have taken a sad toll. I left in 2006 and haven’t been back.
It was a great city back in those days but so was the rest of the state. To many non native Texans moving in and changing things.
Same here, but happy to be gone.
I've been to CCTX What-a-Burger on the 🛣️ to Flour Bluff
I have been in corpus for the past 20 years. It has gotten much better. Housing prices keep going up as well with new people moving in. That shows something.
@@cryptowolf-zf3fsI've been in Corpus for the last 20 years and it's steadily gone down hill, especially compared to San Antonio and Austin. Few cultural activities and terrible restaurants. Gangs, petty crime, low levels of education, terrible streets full of pot holes, polluted beaches. It will never get better because it's a dumping ground for polluting industries.
The biggest Buc-ees (temporarily) is on I-40 near Sevierville Tennessee near where I live. My wife and I have been there twice and it is beyond colossal. Constant flow of humanity.
They are building the world's largest Buc-ee's in Ocala Florida
I live on a ranch that is 40 minutes west of corpus. That place is a lifeline to a lot of the rural areas around here. Not the prettiest , but important to us.
These type of channels love to focus a bit on the worst sides of towns.
I LOVE it! ❤ I try to come down from KC every year or so.
I'm a born and raised Texan and I've never been to Corpus Christi! That far down in Texas is like another world to me!
@SouthTexasLiving 🤝👍
I live east of Dallas and about 12 miles from a Buc-ees. The traffic getting to it, getting in and out of it, and finding parking is unreal and not for the faint of heart. Same thing for the one in Madisonville outside Houston. Sheesh. But we love Buc-ees and beaver nuggets.
I lived in the south for a while and miss the BBQ and those huge Brisket Sandwiches.
My favorite is the Bucees in Wharton. When you're on your way to South Texas you're finally out of Houston 😂
Corpus Christi is that one Texas city nobody talks about. Seems more quiet and tamed compared to the larger cities like Houston, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio
San Antonio looks like the only thing holding that war zone together is the paint from all the gang graffiti if not the rest is iron bars on every window and house front door
@dustincredible1249 Yeah my tattoo artist is in SA and it isn't uncommon to pass a Cadillac with bullet holes
No work, they all leave and come to Houston. The wages are low, when you do find a job.
right! so sshhh.
Yeah right, Corpus has a higher crime rate than all them except maybe Houston sometimes.
I am 65 and because of health problems I can not travel to these places, but somehow Nick makes me
feels like I am there, I think I saw a Whataburger somewhere in my area and I will have to try.
Nick, thoroughly enjoy your funny, quirky take on the highlights (and lowlights) of our vast, geographically diverse country. Keep up the excellent work!
Glad u came to corpus finally. It's not so bad I've lived here 20 years
Excellent vid Nick. I enjoyed it.
I just moved from South Texas a few years ago after living there for 20 years. It’s a fabulous city with everything you want for a decent sized city- plus a beach. Plenty of jobs. We are a Tejano family, so we loved the mixed cultures :) I have no idea why you slammed Corpus as much as you did in this video. Every city this size has “a bad side of town.” Peoria Illinois is smaller and WAY more dangerous. Always had fun in Corpus!
Corpus Christi might be considered a bad place, but it gave us the beautiful Farrah Fawcett.
Now that's a name I haven't heard in a while.
FF was born in Corpus Christi California. Big diff
And Selena
Corpus Christi is not a bad place.
Farrah Fawcett was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, USA. She was born on February 2, 1947. Corpus Christi is a coastal city in South Texas known for its beaches and maritime activities.@@bottlethrower1544
I go to Corpus for vacation every year. It's nice when you're staying on the bay side, of course it has a bad area, too, but it's easy to avoid. USS Lexington and Port A are both cool for a beach vacation, and nearby.
Could you suggest a hotel for my vacation? Can't find something that seems clean with no bugs
@@bastet0140 I usually stay at Emerald Beach Hotel with a king bay view room, it is right on the water and you get a private balcony access for like $100/night. It is a little older though, if you want something more modern I have heard good things about the DoubleTree near the Lexington, it is also right on the water and around the same price, last time I was there construction was a nightmare near that area though. Anywhere you stay I would recommend driving to nearby Port A for the ocean, it's like 30min away, the bay is not as good. Never had any bug problems anywhere, as long as you're staying in something near the water you should be in a good area.
I love how your channel is exposing the ever-growing reality of a collapsing empire. Keep up the good work!👍
The sad thing is we print money every day and it don't have to be.

So glad you went to Buc-ee’s! I love that place! Love from Australia! 🇦🇺

What??? Oh man. Thanks for sharing! ❤️❤️
Corpus was a neat clean city 1960s-1980
We spent a lot of time in Corpus in those days. Kept a boat in the marina.
As was most of the US.. In the 1950s there were basically no ghettos. Even the low income areas were safe. The whole country is going severely downhill.
@@SoloTravelerOffTheBeatenPathThat’s not necessarily true there was crime back then too just wasn’t as bad
Everything is worse no matter where you go. Progressive anti capitalism is to blame
Watch the 1974 movie "Together Brothers" and revisit that statement.
Love your channel Nick !
Thanks for the video and tour of Buc ees - we had one in Greenville SC when I lived there, but I never went in😮
Nice video! You should have taken the ferry from Port A to SH361/Ingleside, and drive along SH35 north. Several interesting places (some not famous though) to show.
As you mentioned, all the barrier islands receive the brunt of hurricanes. Port A was decimated during Harvey in 2017, but people have rebuilt it. Although they keep complaining about the insurance premiums going up every year! (people forget, but actuaries don’t 😊)
Nick, are you trollin' us with the mustache in your intro ? I can't tell, If so it's freaking hysterical 🤣
Your channel is great; wonderful to show kids growing up.
Yay
2:55 This is probably the most comprehensive history of the "CC" I have heard.

OMG I am totally getting the "You did my city and totally missed so much!" reaction [and withholding those comments because it really doesn't matter.] A fun one you missed is that locals refer to it as "Corpus Christi, a sunny place for shady people" which I think captures the essence of Corpus nicely. I should have tried to connect with you before your visit. Wish I had known! Thanks for visiting our city! :)
Nick, for decades I've knocked Chicago where I live. After seeing most of the places you visit, I didn't know how good I have it. Thanks, Nick for opening my eyes. GOD bless.
Chicago isn't that bad in the not ghetto parts.
I think it’s like that with all states. For years I also knocked my town because it’s chilled, quiet and boring at times but after what I’ve seen and heard about from other cities getting overcrowded with newcomers, I think now it’s a good thing.
Love the old Victorian Houses. So cool!🌟💓

I agree the Katrina "Refugees" did a number on a lot of coastal towns in Texas. In the 90s we used to go to Corpus for vacations.
American citizens shouldn't be referred to as refugees. Would you like someone to call you a refugee if you went from one state to another!?
I’m waiting to hear a story where they improve a community.
@@Acemechanicalservices Never gonna happen. If anyone living in severe hurricane & flood zones had much of an IQ, they’d have relocated inland long before.
They’re not exactly bringing progress with them.
Enjoyed my pilot training there in the early 90s. Near the beach, great food, good weather. Quiet, but look forward to getting back to visit someday soon.
Thanks again bro .. love ya
My Dad built a lot of these refineries some time in the early-mid previous century. My uncle tried to get into the US Navy at NAS CC during World's War II, but didn't make it. Mom, from PA state, visited CC during his short time there at the Station, and she never looked back, moving to CC just after the war. She met my father, who helped form the Corpus Christi Symphony in 1944 or 45. I was born in this city, but lived in Odem in the first few years before moving into CC (Annaville area just after it was annexed by CC in the mid-60s) for a short while. Unfortunately, we had to move to San Antonio in '73 for me to go to the school for the deaf there. I cursed that move, because our family life fell apart there.
Quarenta today looks BAD compared to Annaville back in the early 70s! Mom knew people living in the nicest parts of the city by the coast. I remember visiting one of her friend's house, right by the coast, 2-story house with a pool, just a huge place, and with a maid and chauffeur.
CC is unrecognizable except for the beaches and refineries.
Bro I can't wait until you see Galveston hahaha
We had a wonderful family beach weekend on North Padre Island BEFORE the last big Hurricane. Maybe about 15 years ago? We stayed at a beachfront Holiday Inn Spree or something like that it was named. It wasn't luxury but it wasn't crowded, we found sand dollars, there was a sandy beach or you could swim in the pool where there was also a live band. We ate at a good seafood restaurant nearby. Then the Hurricane came and trashed the hotel. I've been watching to see if it's been restored but it's been slow.
Enjoyed seeing Corpus Christi, TX, I didn’t know much about it before this video.
Aaaah, you didn't stop by the Selena memorial! That is a must in Corpus Christi!
Also, ironically, I was eating imitation beaver nuggets right before you walked into Bucees LOL

Lived there for the majority of my life. Left 3 years ago and went to San Antonio. It has really changed over the years. There is a local saying when something ghetto happens, “your Corpus is showing”. Corpus has a rough image. But there are some pockets of it that are still great. I really don’t miss the hurricanes.
What do you mean by ghetto?

0:26 There's a replica of the first Whataburger at 4126 S Staples St. there in Corpus Christi. The first Whataburger was located at 2609 Ayers St.
Edit: So later in the video you talk about this but that building didn't exist back when Whataburger opened their first location. The original shack is long gone but there's a replica at the address I previously mentioned.
I lived in corpus for about ten years..this was a pretty accurate video..surprised you didn’t stop at the Selena statue like everyone does.
I've always enjoyed my visits there. I never think of it as dumpy, just quiet. Probably helps that I stick to the hotel, restaurants, and the beach. I've also driven around and taken the ferry. Nice area.
I stayed on the Lexington ship for a weekend when I was in boy scouts back in the early 2000's. Glad to see the old girl doing well.
I went out there for Christmas a couple of years ago for whatever reason...the Cheesecaske Factory just opened in the mall when I went and the line all the way through the food court was one of the funniest things I ever seen. I liked my visit though but not sure if I'm going anytime soon.
Corpus has been on bad times for 40 years but anywhere on the coast can be fun. Had my 1st one night stand in Corpus back in the 80s after an evening on the town. Great memories. Sadly these refinery towns offer great jobs for a few, and low paying service jobs for everyone else. Urban decay and neighborhood blight is the norm.
24:30 lol. I’ve been to Corpus many times. Oil related mainly. My brother lived there for several years. It was always fun going there especially getting out of Odessa for a few days. Check that refined oil stat again. It’s closer to 3M barrels a week.

I saw an article recently saying Corpus is considered to be a blue zone due to the amt of ppl who live to be 100 or older. I told my partner, who was born in Corpus, & he said "no f***ing way with all that pollution in the air, land, & water..." He said they don't just do water boil orders, that sometimes they just ban residents from using any water period, even if it's boiled & tell em nobody can take a bath, just a quick shower at their own discretion, & to preferably use bottled water & a bucket. & he said everybody who lives their has to have cancer... that there's no way that they don't... especially if they've been exposed to all the chemical smog & contaminated water for decades... 👀

I live in Dallas but love visiting Corpus. Its chill and the drive down 77 is nice. You shouldve driven down to give a quick tour a rockport too
Corpus has been a dump my entire life. It’s a shame that a city with so much potential has been run into the ground. Poor leadership is to blame.
It is a dump. The problem is there is no real money here, no philanthropic, civic minded multimillionaire donors like in Houston, Austin, Dallas and Fort Worth and the refineries pay very little in city property taxes compared to their value because of longtime sweet heart agreements.
Sounds about right. Not to mention corporates are willing to hire exploitation in the citizens who live in the city.

Very Interesting!
Looks like a ghost town
They are showing a small downtown area in a rough neighbourhood. There's nice parts and poor neighbourhoods just like any other city.
Most cities on the Gulf Coast are struggling because people are fleeing them getting away from the floods and hurricanes. The economy is mainly tied to the oil business and the economy is not diversified as you would have in the cities of Texas being further inland with higher elevations and greater weather , that's why.
From Corpus & my folks still live in Flour Bluff. Beautiful cities & great bay fishing ;)
Flour Bluffs has nice beaches for families. Too bad the video didn't include the Texas State Aquarium, it's nice.
