Grand Isle Louisiana was my people's home since the beginning of the 19 century. Now because of unaffordable insurance only the uber wealthy can afford. They build million dollar homes while we are forced to move. Sounds familiar. 😮
Houston and most of the Gulf Coast of Texas is more than oil and gas. Houston learned a painful lesson in the 1980s about being oil and gas dependent when the oil glut hit. They began a rapid effort to diversify the economy and added shipping, international trade and finance, medical services, tourism, and some other elements of commerce to the mix. That's why they are is now at 7.5 million metro and still growing. Yes, the weather of the tropics can be a bear at times, but the area keeps growing. One of the biggest concerns is now entering the future planning processes; that is possible sea level rise and efforts to mitigate its influence and how that might impact production sites on the Gulf.

As an Albertan, I can relate. It's definitely related to extraction based economies and how these corporations make promises to towns of temporary economic gains but always leave communities with long-term pains.... The faster we all move beyond fossil-fuel based economics the better for everyone. Ironically enough the Alberta government collects FAR more revenue from gambling, cannabis and liquor sales than oil and gas revenues and is clearly a sustainable business yet ALGC (the crown corporation in charge of these vices) is never given equal footing when it comes to the economy in highlight reels or even political priorities despite employing more people and bringing in far more revenue to provincial coffers... I know, even after college I worked for them via a casino job and it probably paid similar to what I'd have made risking my life in Fort Mac and the tar sands... Meanwhile the oil and gas industry clean up bill for Alberta's abandoned existing non tar sands projects stands at nearly $60B and nobody in either major political party here wants to discuss that oily black elephant in the room...
Hugh fucking midity. That’s about it. But if you want you can live in southern Florida or southern texas and that cool ocean breeze makes you almost forget the heat(almost)
* Shows list that shows Florida and Texas having the most net domestic migration * Fails to mention Alabama is ninth on that same list shown on screen Alabama's historically been pretty low, but it's actually growing decently economically and population-wise. It's just massively overshadowed by other states in the same region. If it had started with slightly better numbers, it would actually be in a pretty decent spot. As it stands now, it just needs a bit of time. The same can't be as easily said for Louisiana and Mississippi.
I've lived in Pensacola, Louisiana for most of my life, and on the southeast Texas coast for the last 7 years. The mosquitos, alligators, hogs, humidity, heat, and hurricanes weeds out the non believers. Go back to Portland and Washington.
Texas has suffered from poor political leadership for close to 30 years. A business friendly place but not worker friendly. We had our largest budget surplus in history last year, other than a small break on property taxes (we have some of the highest in the nation) billions are being spent on border security to secure re-election of our leaders. Doctors & educators are fleeing the state, our power grid collapsed & is little better 3 years later. College education is hugely expensive so it is little wonder than most Texans education stops after high school. On the plus side if you learn an advanced technical trade reasonable wages can be had in the few counties with large petro-chemical industries. Sadly most of Texas is rural farming & ranching with small towns experiencing little to no growth. Most Texans are poorly educated & living in the past.
This comment section perfectly embodies how (many) gulf coasters are defensive af against any possible criticism. The oil spills aren’t the only source of toxicity lol

He's really mostly on point. Except Florida and most of Texas and most of Alabama hasn't had low education or low unemployment I don't believe. Only Mississippi and Louisiana. The Gulf Coast is a vacation destination and most of it always has been no matter how you look at it and yea we do have a very lot of problems. It's ok. But yea we are amazing. It's very beautiful and very special and one the best regions of the country. He's right though the economy has been fucking it up it plays apart in global warming and other things and it is a strong possibility it may end up destroying it. I'm from the Ms. Gulf Coast.

I hate to hear when people bash the oil industry, a majority of the people that live here depend on it for a living and take pride in working in the oilfield. It’s the most lucrative natural resource that this country has.
The oil & gas industry is not a factor in the economy east of Mobile Bay and is barely a factor east of New Orleans. Half the video is about an industry that is non-existant in Florida. Hurricanes are managable if people don't build stupid. We now have almost 100 years of radar tracks on tropical systems. Some areas are much more likely to get storms than others and you can see where they are. Things built in Florida after Andrew are very resisant and the latest techniques are even better. Once the state burries all its power lines Category 3 and below storms will hardly be an issue except in the lowest lying areas. The big question is how many more 4's and 5's reach shore in the future. Category 5 storms will wipe out anything, but they are exceedingly rare in the US.
The time more people were moving to the Gulf Coast was also when climate change was increasing the severity/damage of natural storms. I can see by 2035, 2040 or 2050 Northern states getting increased population. People gotta choose to live more inland or have your home submerged by rising ocean levels. Some people could be friendly but backstabbers or friendly but liars behind your back.

If your a surviver from hurricain Katrina give this comment a 👍

Glad I always lived on the east coast of Florida if the west coast and the panhandle is that bad.
But isn't that republican policy to give massive tax cuts to billionaire companies
@@Johnjohn-rr5dn It's Conservative in Alberta, Canada.
Love to travel ! Go where it is nice ! I don’t want to own anything anywhere !
Inequality is the individuals fault , in America even now hard work has its rewards
because when i walk outside (swfl) its 95 degrees (no joke)
Hugh fucking midity. That’s about it. But if you want you can live in southern Florida or southern texas and that cool ocean breeze makes you almost forget the heat(almost)
Good vid. it sucks this happening
Thank you so much
* Shows list that shows Florida and Texas having the most net domestic migration
* Fails to mention Alabama is ninth on that same list shown on screen
Alabama's historically been pretty low, but it's actually growing decently economically and population-wise. It's just massively overshadowed by other states in the same region. If it had started with slightly better numbers, it would actually be in a pretty decent spot. As it stands now, it just needs a bit of time. The same can't be as easily said for Louisiana and Mississippi.
I'm pretty sure they're talking about the coastal area
It’s massively overshadowed by the politics lol
I've lived in Pensacola, Louisiana for most of my life, and on the southeast Texas coast for the last 7 years. The mosquitos, alligators, hogs, humidity, heat, and hurricanes weeds out the non believers. Go back to Portland and Washington.
I’ll ONLY live south of I-10 and not in the desert so Gulf Coast it is!
Hows the weather/climate? It has to be better than Michigan.
Hot and humid
Hot and humid ALL YEAR
Hot but winter is amazing
Puro 956!❤
Yup. I work too hard
Says Ocean Springs, shows Biloxi
To be fair you can see Biloxi really well from Ocean Springs
This comment section perfectly embodies how (many) gulf coasters are defensive af against any possible criticism. The oil spills aren’t the only source of toxicity lol
Also disclaimer: ofc not all gulf coast residents are like this.
This video was made by a liberal from California that didn't grow up here...hit like if you agree

Gulf Coast.

Insightful video! Living on the Gulf Coast comes with its unique challenges. What surprised you the most? Share your thoughts and let's discuss the reality of coastal living.
I hate to hear when people bash the oil industry, a majority of the people that live here depend on it for a living and take pride in working in the oilfield. It’s the most lucrative natural resource that this country has.
Dont be saying anything negative about my gulf and you can keep your hipsters
Thank you for reminding me to never live here. Even though I got family and friends here
and the entire region votes against its own interest
They call that strip Cancer Alley for a reason!!! Read the data

Goshhhhhh
Cleveland never looked so good before.
NOWHERE "is a vacation" if you LIVE and WORK there! Duh!

Looks more like an 'n' than a 'u'.
It is VERY clear your more of an activist then a creator. You've dobe nothing but gone out of your way to run the biggest more generously providing industry into the ground through most of ypur videos. Oil workers are ALL ALL ALL paid well. Not just management. That's was a lie you told. The Gulf Coast has a massive issue due to location of people who came here from south America as well. They bring THEIR life style with them. That's why it looks like a garbage dump in many places.
Within the first thirty seconds you used unnecessarily big words like homogeneous, opulent, and ostentatious that low key made me feel dump and didn’t make me want to keep watching just my opinion
