    Great video....
    Very important that DC isn't disconnected by pulling contactors apart, DC arcs gets more violent at higher voltages resulting in weld scoring on the terminals and potential shorting. AC voltages goes through the 0v point 50x a second (50 Hz) so the voltage 'let's go' of the connection quickly but DC doesn't and tries to maintain the connection whilst the components are being pulled apart creating problems.....

    Agree about the fan noise but fast forward into the future when air source heat pumps are the norm and fan noise will be everywhere!

      Been living in an area with heat pumps for 7 year and they are noisy. It’s a relief when they turn off. The future sounds noisy 😅

    Good video; first I've seen that even acknowledges the fan noise which would be a deal breaker for me. I can see Wallbox have a new V2G charger out, which is much taller. I'd be interested to know if that allows better cooling and a quieter product.

  • @oleww50

    sounds like a slightly quieter heat pump, they are noisy. Interesting video thanks. Looking forward to this being more mainstream tech.

    This only looks like part of a solution that may be ideal. But charging / discharging should be depending on the residential demand. Smart metering should be part of the installation. The noise is unacceptable for residential usage.

    I've been waiting for the V2H charger for a while now. The Quasar was announced for a while ago but this is the 1st real world demo I've seen. It's also very hard to find a price for it.

    While a by-product of solid state switching to convert AC to DC is heat, the best, using Silicon Carbide or even Gallium Nitride, give off less heat and so are more efficient. Think I will wait a while before jumping in with this unit.

    If you switch off the main grid breaker to your house, will this unit power your house allowing you to power your critical loads (lights, fridge etc) during power cuts?

    • @eviain
      @eviain  2 роки тому +1

      No the system is grid tied, so there must be mains power, mainly for safety of engineers working on the transformers in power cuts. I believe power walls like tesla you can add an additional module to cut the grid connection so you can power your home and not put grid workers at risk, so I can see that it would be possible in theory but we dont have the software or hardware to do that here, great question.

    Informative video. Thanks. Looks like its use is limited to Chademo cars and would imagine the EV itself would need to have software that allows for V2G?

    • @eviain
      @eviain  2 роки тому +1

      Yea chademo only some talk of ccs having a v2g capability in future. I believe the EV does need to have software to support, however I’m unsure if the leaf has this from factory

    What is the charging rate and discharging rates? (kW)
    I also have a newer Nissan Leaf and I’m interested in V2G and this looks a good solution since Nissan dealers in Finland know nothing about solar or V2G.
    Would it work on all models of Nissan Leafs?

    • @eviain
      @eviain  2 роки тому

      Hi Bradenton, the rate is up to 7kw the unit is on a 32/40amp supply so that’s the max. I believe the leaf can do this out of the box as it’s all part of the chademo standard.
      The charger system is a bit basic, it doesn’t work like a power wall so would be quite manual to use unless they have other features that are not part of this trial, like some kind of import sensing that would trigger v2g/h

    Is this going to be automated, or will one need to fiddle with an app mulitple times a day? e.g. set it to charge car during off-peak, then pull power from car during peak but set it so the car can only be drained down to 50% of its capacity so your not stuck with a useless car. Then once set, forget about it, also have to touch an app to disconnect is stupid. Surely a button built into the charger handle with fingerprint biometric is the logical way?

    • @eviain
      @eviain  Рік тому

      Hi during the trial the system was automated. But you could intervene manually if needed. Through the app you could set a minimum level of charge at a specific time so you’d always have what you needed in the morning.

  • @geraldtomson8105

    Hi Evlain is your unit on a trial set up were you can purchase the unit after the trail ends. I was accepted on a trial set up but the time schedule was being put back all the time and I had to go to a power supplier they stated for the time of the trail which was not one of the cheapest ones, so I opted out before it started so it did not make me liable for any costs.

    • @eviain
      @eviain  2 роки тому

      Hi no I don’t believe so, and I’m not sure id really be that interested in purchasing it. The car is also part of the trial so it all goes back when it finishes.

  • @michaelviney3737

    Very interesting…………
    Surprised at the fan noise and as you say in the dead of night might have neighbours getting the shotguns out!
    Is there a difference in charge rates/time when using the dc connection? I would have thought there might be as the ac to dc rectification normally done in the car when using the Zappi would also generate heat which might be undesirable in the car and might be a limiting factor.

    • @eviain
      @eviain  3 роки тому

      Hi Michael, Yes that’s right the onboard charger would normally handle the conversion with its inverter, however they are normally rated, I think the leaf has a ~6kw charger, limiting the rate of charge.
      With the DC Wallbox it may be able to supply 32amp/7kw but there could be all kinds of real world losses that make it a negligible benefit.
      The leafs connection itself is capable of much faster charges…. 40kw.. At least once! *cough* Rapid gate, however thermal control from the battery slows the charge on the leaf as there’s no active cooling on the battery.

    • @eviain
      @eviain  2 роки тому

      Hi, no, using Chademo at 7kw is no different to using Type 2 at 7kw. If the Wallbox Quasar could supply 40Kw then it would be different but it cannot rapid charge or rapid discharge the battery. It also bypasses the onboard charger in the car, so saves use of those components.

    I can see a selfparking V2G nudging on to any out door power point at knee level and trading stability and electricity with the grid.
    A VPP and controlled by the vehicle computer. 😊😊😊😊
    Most vehicles are parked 23hrs every day.
    If my street of 30 homes and 60 vehicles all homes with 6.6kWh rooftops PV and selfparking EVs withbig 100kwhbattery, then we could generate 3mWh and store 6mWh daily.
    When the wall outlet is in every vehicle parking space, universal, then the battery benefits will be universal.
    If 20million buildings and vehicles were the same then Australia could be free of fossil fuels.
    The USA 300million buildings and vehicles
    could be similar. 😊😊😊

      @@eviain they will not give you warranty i tell you those lithium batteries are so wearing down super fast, if you use them to power houses they will do lots of recharge cycles, and that is pain for lithium batteries, imagine you have new car, in 3 years and 100k km you gona have less than half capacity and range... i beleave there is warranty limits that below 70% battery considers damaged and needs to be replaced. Tesla warranty claims clearly - you cannot power the house. Same goes for all manufacturers, because they would need to replace milions of bateries underwaranty

    • @eviain
      @eviain  2 роки тому +1

      So you did watch the video with the guy from Nissan in the link above, advocating the use case?
      Powering a house vs driving is very low power 14kwh per day would be needed for my home. Batteries like to be charged and discharged slowly and cool-ly which 7kw will do.
      Batteries don’t like being charged on rapids and get very hot, especially Nissans as they are not cooled. Running v2h/g at 7kw is very slow and therefore not too stressful.
      Some manufacturers will replace batteries under warranty at 70% or less capacity. However a battery with 70% capacity would be very good for… running a house, which is a second life use for EV batteries already.
      Tesla in this example is irrelevant, they don’t use chademo and have no commercial interest in v2h/g as they sell power wall. So it would eat in to one of their other products market.
      However in my case as you know the car isn’t mine, it’s part of a trial so I’m not that bothered what happens to the battery 😅
      Cheers!
