  • Explore the impact of the recent doping scandal involving Chinese swimmers. Drawing from personal experience and the timeless lessons of the movie "Gattaca," I discuss the mental struggle athletes face when competing against those who cheat and the importance of maintaining integrity and dedication in the face of adversity. By examining the original spirit of the Olympics and the words of its founder, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, I encourage athletes to focus on what they can control and to make their loudest statements through their commitment, effort, and sportsmanship. Join me as we navigate the complexities of this controversy and discover how we can all strive to embody the true essence of athletic competition.

I know someone from a national team back in 1999-2000 who told me her coach pressured her to take drugs before a competition and helded her a pill so she can win national competition. So, she took the pill and put it in her pocket and told the coach that she will take the pill later. At this national competition, she won her main event and her coach said "See, you won the event because I gave you the pill!" And she replied: "I didn't take the pill. In fact, I was so anger that it feeded my determination to the max just to show you that I can win without taking any drugs."
Her coach never asked her to take any drugs after that. Got top30 in the world for her main style at her prime.

A tiny but solid proof of How Widespread American athletes doping to win.

@@KenTang-j5c She wasn't American. She was from a country in far east asia that I will not name. But, it could happen in any national team of any country. USA used to give drugs to their athletes (mostly in the 70s and 80s). Also, new drugs are always came from Westerner countries (USA, UK, Germany) and when international organizations were aware of the new drugs, they (USA, UK, Germany) dumped the drugs to 3rd world countries.

The call “Be stronger without doping and beat the cheater” in Olympic-level sports is naive and does not work. Many Western athletes have various permissions to take drugs. It's just legalized doping. And no one talks about this. A clever lawyer who acquits a murderer is not the way to restore justice. This gives rise to hatred and a thirst for revenge among the victims.

Beautiful video SNT. I hate to think that there is no sporting event that is accomplishing to the greatest possible degree the original goals of friendship and understanding. I always liked ultimate frisbee because they built compromise into the rules. I also loved when I finished a race as a swimmer and felt closer to my competitors, the distance events were my favorite in that way.

The Olympic Games are about politics and money, not sports. Coubertin's Olympic Games are no more. Unfortunately.

I wonder why the US makes such a big deal about China doping after they won in 2000 Tokyo (even though WADA officially came out saying there was not sufficient evidence to prove that the swimmers were taking ped). Wonder why Russia is banned from the Olympics. Wonder why it is China and Russia (the 2 countries US hates the most) that always are accused and slandered.

I think the problem is that everyone takes performance enhancements to a certain degree. Pretty sure there is a limit on concentration in your body, feel like everyone thats competing for a world title would be playing around with that

And this video hides the fact that nowadays Chinese swimmers subjected to almost 10 times more drug test to the extent of totally disrupting their sleep while the American swimmer, most of them with Asthmatic exceptionalism, almost receive no test. Why? This is a sheer voluntary Propaganda and subtle racism.

One of the best messages from you. It's refreshing to see this viewpoint of yours. However, in the eyes of team managers, coaches, staffs, organizers, organizations, press, only the gold medalists count. Modern world is all about rewards, benefits, sales, etc. A popular sport event has become a show business with each gold medalist being the hero of each episode. It's pretty hard for the athletes and audiences all over the world to resist such strong messages fed by the media, and retain the ideal value of competition.

When I read about the Chinese explanation of the 'drug tests' I skoffed. I am fairly certain that was a prebaked excuse rather than a reason.... I also expect that the next round of 'cheating' will center around genetically enhanced athletes. There are always those who will do everything they can to win because winning is more important than the journey.

    • @JohnSmith-el4rl

Chinese explanation is the same as the explanation the US: “a case involving more than 10 athletes in the U.S. in 2014, but there are many other examples where there has been group contamination related to food or environment, where these cases have been closed without public disclosure because it has been accepted that these athletes were at no fault… This is not without precedent.” Unless athlete is found at fault, there is no need for publicity and sparks to start fire

@@JohnSmith-el4rl yes. Only because it is pertaining to certain country(ies), people become political and assume they must be bad. The athletes shouldn't be judged by where they are from, it should be based on the facts of each case.
Think of the poor athletes who trained as hard as everyone else, if only to be dismissed/disqualified because of contamination/third-party sabotage. For people to not believe the tests and records.
For the people who do not believe it, just read the WADA report. They have multiple tests done, some are before the contamination that recorded no subtance. Also the positive results showed concentration is too low to indicate deliberate doping.
