    Actually, closing one's eyes gives you excellent extra focus inwards! Many musicians do it habitually. It is really amazing what blind people can achieve!

    Never knew Phelps's goggles broke in Beijing.
    Amazing how he and his coach had the forethought to practice without.

    I did a lifeguard training recently and all swimming there happens without goggles. It's really annoying to get used to, but it's certainly possible.

    If I were Phelps, I would have thrown my goggles off at one of the ends of the pool

    how do blind people know that they are going to hit the wall ?

      They touch them with a small ball on a stick before the wall

    will be standard
    Not so sure about so called blind people.partially sighged maybe.

      There are three categories of visually impaired swimmers. S11 are blind or nearly blind, and compete in blacked-out goggles.
