- This song goes back as far back as the 17th century and the first recorded version is dated 1928, sung by Alger "Texas" Alexander.
The version we're familiar with is a story about a brothel in New Orleans named after Madame Marianne Le Soleil Levant, which is French for "Rising Sun." The brothel opened in 1862 when Union Troops occupied the town and closed in 1874 when the town received too many complaints from neighbors.
The song is about a poor boy, whose life is ruined by this place, The Rising Sun, a brothel and a gambling spot. His mother is a sewer and his father a drunk, only satisfied when drunk.
The song is at the end also a warning for young generations not to fall on such temptations.
Mothers are advised to tell their children about the dangers of such decadent places, where sin and misery await.
