    Hugely helpful Matt! Thank you so very much! I've been thinking about how to break through the ceiling of being an installer after 8 years as an electrician. Your video format of showing how you do things is absolutely the most helpful and informative I've been able to find on all things rough construction. Watching how someone does something without all the stories and anecdotes that come with a grey beard and a beer belly is a great change of pace for me 😅 you're helping to get me excited about my first custom home build.

    On the bat calculation, I simply multiply sheets by 3 (rather than multiply 12 and divide by 4)
    You arrive at the same answer, but save a step. In essence, use fractions or percentages in place of a 2-step multiply & divide method.
    It’s all about saving steps, even the small ones-it’s a mindset, right my friend? Keep up the good work brother!

      @@MattBangsWood yes sir, I’ve learned a lot from watching your videos!
      Funny story: first video I ever watched was your ‘board/bat install tips” couple years back. Very next day, we’re doing Hardie vertical install on a 5/12 gable end of a large apartment building. I remembered that 5/12 x 48 =20” drop in height every 4’...so I’m cutting on the ground and ask my new guy up on the lift, (who had done quite well first couple weeks) “what’s the height measure on that first one?”
      He yells, 86” dead nuts!”
      I yell back, “ You sure?”...he double checks and nods.
      Then I proceed to cut everything left & right side pitch @ 86, 66, 46, 26 & 6
      He hangs the first and yells back, “hey boss this ones a couple inches short, sorry I meant 88”...👌🤦🏻‍♂️
      We cleaned up and went home for the day lol

      @erickaufman4674 4 роки тому

      @@MattBangsWood just remember to add 2 more for each of your prefab corners in the rare occasion your job calls for using same dimensions for bats and corners (we just did one with cedar all 1x4s- corners & bats 24 o/c bats)...Similar method when figuring drywall & 2x4s to frame interior walls as well.
      Figure the total linear feet, divide by 4, there’s your sheets. Then take sheets x3, add 2 for each corner. Multiply by 1.1 to account for top and bottom plate. You’ll never come out light, even with a door here and there...

    • @MattBangsWood
      @MattBangsWood  4 роки тому

      1.1x takes care of all your studs. Bracing is calc'd out personally, or could be marked out using the 'count items' tool. 8'/9' walls = 12' braces. 1 per wall.
      For blocking, if we're blocking the way we normally do, we'll add a "third top plate" all around the building. Gives us enough for blocks.

    1) How do you get the plans into the app? Most plans are huge (architectural size D or E), and I know of no regular scanner that could handle scanning them. Do you start with a PDF from the architect?
    2) Once you have the plans in the system, I assume there's a way to tell it what scale the plans are at? Otherwise, the measurements would be inaccurate.

    • @MattBangsWood
      @MattBangsWood  4 роки тому

      1. Most plans are definitely huge, files are massive. For every project we do, we have the plans digital in a .PDF from Struct / Archi, compiled together. This is how you'll upload them to the application.
      2. I was hoping I'd get this question, because it's a good one! I'll be showing this in the next episode. The application has two ways of doing this.. A) Change the scale yourself, to whatever is listed on the plans.. 1/4"-1', 3/16"-1', etc.. or B) Take a known measurement, if you don't know the scale, and the app will get the scale for you.

    • @MattBangsWood
      @MattBangsWood  4 роки тому

      Yes, we bid per sq. ft., we mark up material total on a home 10%-15%. This allows for error in the takeoff process, or price increases, and puts money in your pocket for having put the money up front for material.

    Matt I know this is Conx but I want to know if you have tried Stack. The reason I am asking just by what you show and what Stack shows your Conx looks more simplistic. Have you tried both?
    Also do you know if there's a program that will count when you highlight like if u highlight a HD2 1X will it count how many hd2 there are as apposed marking everyone?
    Thx love the info👍

      You can get a 2 week trial for free. After that you pay.

    Thanks for that information Matt. With reference to roof sheathing and roof SF, what if you have hips and valleys? Will the SF be the same when you multiply by the slope? Or is there a different factor?
    I'm referencing the "Flat Area Factor" and the other one for a roof with Hips and Valleys.

    I notice you figured plumbing walls as 2x4. Here in NC most everyone uses 2X6 walls for plumbing walls just to give more room to work with. Just curious if you always use 2x4 or if this is just a rare instance?
