Loving the content Matt! No one is creating this type of content about learning plans and bidding jobs like you do. Your building content is educational and entertaining, but this behind the scenes/administrative work is invaluable. Thanks again!
Insightful video,as an old dog ,learning new tricks can be tough, but this program seems incredibly straight forward...glad to see your back, and glad to hear it’s just a busy schedule and nothing negative keeping you from putting out your videos...my wife thinks I’m truly a wacko, I’ve been swinging a hammer over 30 years and in the evenings after work I truly enjoy watching(and still learning) from your content, keep up the good work!!!
Hey, Matt. New to the channel but wanted to say I think your non-profit will be Great for kids in this century. Few people understands the demand and need for people in the trades because kids in school think they NEED to go to college and piss-away a bunch of money. A bunch of money that could be spent on getting certified and then buy a house! Keep it up, man. Your channel ROCKS!
Absolutely awesome. I have been doing takeoffs for a few years with an old program that took me hours. ConX looks like a great tool and thanks for the video.
Hugely helpful Matt! Thank you so very much! I've been thinking about how to break through the ceiling of being an installer after 8 years as an electrician. Your video format of showing how you do things is absolutely the most helpful and informative I've been able to find on all things rough construction. Watching how someone does something without all the stories and anecdotes that come with a grey beard and a beer belly is a great change of pace for me 😅 you're helping to get me excited about my first custom home build.
Great video bro, glad your back! I appreciate the info on the real life tools that you are using like this to be efficient. Thanks, would be interested in seeing more vids like this!

Wow man I am impressed because I’m going to my boss today with this to see if we can make are count this way...Thanks for your channel brother because I’m learning a lot...
Love your videos. Matt. It is well informative and helpful. Thank you. I have a question of floor plan , I dont know what is " exterior plant -on ? It requires 2 x plant-on , 2x BLKG as rea'd, 2x 6 studs , Ext. Cement Plaster on metal lath , corner Bead Typ. I tried to search the web, come empty . Thank you .
Im a little bit confused about the sheathing calculation. Does dividing the total exterior wall/linear feet by 4 give us enough sheathing for a 2 story house with a tall gable? How do you account for the vertical?
On the bat calculation, I simply multiply sheets by 3 (rather than multiply 12 and divide by 4) You arrive at the same answer, but save a step. In essence, use fractions or percentages in place of a 2-step multiply & divide method. It’s all about saving steps, even the small ones-it’s a mindset, right my friend? Keep up the good work brother!
This industry is full of things passed on by others, that's one of my favorite things about working construction. Sheets x 3 makes it way easy, haven't seen or done that before, will definitely give it a shot next time around!
@@MattBangsWood yes sir, I’ve learned a lot from watching your videos! Funny story: first video I ever watched was your ‘board/bat install tips” couple years back. Very next day, we’re doing Hardie vertical install on a 5/12 gable end of a large apartment building. I remembered that 5/12 x 48 =20” drop in height every 4’...so I’m cutting on the ground and ask my new guy up on the lift, (who had done quite well first couple weeks) “what’s the height measure on that first one?” He yells, 86” dead nuts!” I yell back, “ You sure?”...he double checks and nods. Then I proceed to cut everything left & right side pitch @ 86, 66, 46, 26 & 6 He hangs the first and yells back, “hey boss this ones a couple inches short, sorry I meant 88”...👌🤦🏻♂️ We cleaned up and went home for the day lol
@@MattBangsWood just remember to add 2 more for each of your prefab corners in the rare occasion your job calls for using same dimensions for bats and corners (we just did one with cedar all 1x4s- corners & bats 24 o/c bats)...Similar method when figuring drywall & 2x4s to frame interior walls as well. Figure the total linear feet, divide by 4, there’s your sheets. Then take sheets x3, add 2 for each corner. Multiply by 1.1 to account for top and bottom plate. You’ll never come out light, even with a door here and there...
I am not a framer by any means, but I built an excel spreadsheet I just list out wall length later or the sq footage and it calculates for me. Grant it I am only adding an addition on to my house. With that said this program looks pretty good.
Thanks for the video, can you make another video where you actually do the count from the engineering plans, and do the take off for the doors and windows header, rafters, lvls, etc. Thanks
@MattBangsWood Thanks for posting this educational video. I don't have any actual house plans. Do you have any expired house plans for me to play around on Conxjobs? I hate myself for asking, but I'd love to get more involved with all of this.
Yes, would love more plan reading and getting ready for build. This was an outstanding video, i’ been trying to figure out how to inventory all the lumber needed and this seems like I could use this. Thank you very very much
Hey Matt. I have been a carpenter in the union for 15 years. I really don't care for commercial as much as residential due to the lack of wood in commercial here. I'm from Ontario Canada. I have recently left the union and started my own company building homes. Your videos have helped me out alot! Thanks for the great detailed videos! I probably have a million questions but one question is do you guys cover cost of nails in your labor price or do you charge for nails same as materials?
Thank you for all this video. Your content is awesome for new contractors like me.. i would really wish if you could do a conx tutorial on each item with common numbers for us the new contractors, we have here in the US . All I found are tutorials based on Australia.
Thanks for the info Matt! I headed over and checked them out because we are looking to do an addition on the back of the house. I am looking into doing a lot of it on my own so we can actually afford it. Now I have a pretty good idea of what the lumber side of things will cost! Keep up the great content and tutorials!
Great video and informative. Does the program take into consideration the studs needed for wall bracing and blocking or is this done separately from the typical wall stud takeoff? Thanks and looking forward to more of your videos.
1.1x takes care of all your studs. Bracing is calc'd out personally, or could be marked out using the 'count items' tool. 8'/9' walls = 12' braces. 1 per wall. For blocking, if we're blocking the way we normally do, we'll add a "third top plate" all around the building. Gives us enough for blocks.
1) How do you get the plans into the app? Most plans are huge (architectural size D or E), and I know of no regular scanner that could handle scanning them. Do you start with a PDF from the architect? 2) Once you have the plans in the system, I assume there's a way to tell it what scale the plans are at? Otherwise, the measurements would be inaccurate.
1. Most plans are definitely huge, files are massive. For every project we do, we have the plans digital in a .PDF from Struct / Archi, compiled together. This is how you'll upload them to the application. 2. I was hoping I'd get this question, because it's a good one! I'll be showing this in the next episode. The application has two ways of doing this.. A) Change the scale yourself, to whatever is listed on the plans.. 1/4"-1', 3/16"-1', etc.. or B) Take a known measurement, if you don't know the scale, and the app will get the scale for you.
Bro this is rad as hell! Thank you man, been following ya for a minute now, I do a lot of timber framing too and it’s interesting to see how it’s done across the pond, not envious of your weather at all though. Peace and love from the UK brother.
Hey Matt, when you guys bid a house do you bid per sqft? When you mention you put your mark up on the lumber I am curious? my plans are out for bid and I would like to figure out the cost myself too.
Yes, we bid per sq. ft., we mark up material total on a home 10%-15%. This allows for error in the takeoff process, or price increases, and puts money in your pocket for having put the money up front for material. Whereabouts are you from? I can shoot you over a price on what the framing would be at..
